My man, thanks a bunch. You've helped me confirm my suspicion with my 3v Mustang GT. No jerking or struggling while accelerating, but definitely, like you said, very little air coming out the exhausts (almost no air at all). I also run a burble/popcorn tune, so, yeh...Plus orange hot cats when climbing around the mountains. Plus bad smell especially on cold start and all the time basically. I've also got an up and down idle but I believe that's because of a bad water pump? Lots of evidence of coolant coming out from below the pump. Haven't done any vacuum leak tests though. Thanks again for the awesome video.
I have a problem with mine that I'm thinking is cat it almost seems like the timing is off one side must be clogged pretty bad bc I have misfires on one hole side of the engine
My 2003 Dodge Caravan with 158,000 miles, got P0420 code. Lugs bad on grades. Barely making it up losing speed from 40 to 25 mph by the summit. Runs fine on the level. But runs hotter than usual but not overheating. Replacing cat tomorrow.
Ive been suspecting my Cat being the issue, this video will help me make a solid diagnosis. just keep doing what you do. don't worry about how many subscribers you have now, the more you put out the more will come. stay consistent and dont quit. the world needs RUclips Professors like you!
It could be an air filter clogged too. Not in your case, but the symptoms. I also have had the same symptoms in the past and and the cause turned out to be all of these (not at once): Cat. converter, fuel filter and Mass Air-Flow sensor.
Thank you so much for making this video. I have a 99 Jimmy and it is acting just as you described. I have to push it and push it to maintain 100 km on the freeway. Yesterday, initially, I barely made it over a hill close to home. I had it floored and would hardly go over maybe about 20 mph. I was thinking maybe a problem with the injectors but after watching your video I am convinced it is most likely a clogged cat. Maybe debris from the cat has also travelled farther down steam and possibly caused a blockage in the muffler too. I have a scan tool the reads live data so I can also check the O2 sensors and I will purchase a new vacuum gauge also so I can see how the engine is breathing. Like you said that it is like trying to run with your hand over your mouth. ( I had a vacuum gauge but it is missing in action. ) Thank you so much and I am now SUBSCRIBED!!
I'm having problem with that too. Even I have check engine light on,I diagnosed it(OBD2) and it's said something about cat from under (catalytic converter sensor),not front catalytic close to engine then I ignored it. I don't even know what front catalytic does. I noticed my car jerking while I accelerate like it making me feel that it was low motor oil and I changed it myself. My mpg burned fast than normal. It won't go up to 40 per hrs. I thought it was transmission worn out because of 300k. I went to mechanical(near house). He tested drive it and floor the gas like why it got loud on the hood, he said that my front catalytic is clogged. I started to understand why my OBD2 trying to warn me but it did not say anything about front catalytic . I never knew front catalytic have honeycomb as filter to prevent harm dirty gas in my life. Only under car catalytic pipe I only heard since I took care of my car.
That’s exactly what my Camaro is doing now it’s hardly going 3,000 rpm’s so I’m gunna take my catalytic converter off because it’s bad to honeycombs in it broke all up I need a new one. Thx for your video 👍🏻
Car having hard time going over 2 rpm. I checked plugs, air filter and other basics. Nothing. I removed upstream sensor from catalytic converter. Car went to 4 and 5 rpms no problem. It seems last place to check is where the problem starts. Now I'm going in right direction. Thanks for your video and time.
Backyard mechanic way to tell if it's the CC. Pull the O2 sensor out of your down pipe near the exhaust manifold and if the car goes from running rough to normaling out when you pull that O2 sensor out, you know it's the catalytic converter. A bad CC isn't absorbing emissions and is forcing back pressure back up into the engine. Pulling that O2 sensor allows that pressure to escape out of that O2 port. If you can afford it, take it to a mechanic and they can pull the engine computer data and it'll take them about 5 mins to diagnose it.
Well....in my case: 2000 camry V6. Light on for 420 code all kinds of power. 3 O2 sensors and 3 cats later 2500$. Bc the mechanic could not diagnose it the first time so he ended up replacing everything. Stay away from Toyota especially with California emissions.
@@bryan_trades8867 honestly could be either. I had the same code and changed the upstream sensor, then after changing it and clearing the code. I had a different code pop up for the catalytic inefficiency on the down stream sensor. The CEL reading should tell you which bank it’s coming from, but in your case(v6) I believe you have at least 3 02 sensors if I’m not mistaken.
this was exactly what i needed. i removed my cat and drove like a charm. i was so close giving up because i did everything from new plugs and new coil packs and new valve cover gasket and tube seals and nothing worked. thank you!
@@XxXGBatXxX my car engine is whining like i was towing something heavy, i thought my brake was binding. Now I'm thinking it's the cat, but it's only 4 y/o.
Bought a Grand Cherokee from a shop who had replaced several parts while "troubleshooting" this problem. Paid $800, drove it home and sawsalled the bad cat and installed straightpipe. Good to go.
The very hot exhaust coming out of my truck is what lead me to pulling the catalytic converters off and I did find that the front cat is clogged. Now I need to find a way of cleaning it! Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Keep posting videos like this one! Diagnosing problems the on cars can be harder than the actual work sometimes. All your videos should be "How to idenitfy a bad ...." in my opinion or at least have a playlist of the most common problems. Looks like your going to pass 130k on this one and from the looks of it your other videos don't have many views. Stick with what's working and you'll get there. Great job on this one!
laser temp reader. They're like $20 and if the cat is plugged it's hotter upstream (closer to the engine) than it is downstream. When a cat works properly it should be hotter downstream. I dumped sea foam into mine after removing the upstream O2 sensor into the cat and it cleaned it up.
@@FranciscoJavierOutdoors Its not a product made to clean cats. It worked for me and it's worked for others. Upstream was hotter than down while clogged. Ran the seafoam through and the down started reading hotter, like over 100 degree difference. I was told it might break down the honey comb eventually but had nothing to lose by doing it. If the honey comb breaks down I'll be back to where I was. There are also varying degrees of clogged. Mine was clogged enough to trip a code and show temps of being clogged, but it wasn't clogged bad enough to effect driving (there are two cats).
THANK you, having problems getting up to speed and car jerks like crazy, replaced 02 sensor spark plugs snd TPS problem still there, i noticed the exhaust gas was extremely hot as well! and it comes out all sputtering inconsistent and not smooth, aftermarket cat as well, taking it tomorrow to get checked
I change my o2 sensor since that’s the codes that were being thrown. A day later I get on the highway and my truck starts doing the same was this truck, couldn’t go over 45 mph seemed like to wanted to shut off. Exhaust smells different and when I started it this bring back stuff shot out.
Update : this video helped me diagnose and fix my 2013 Acura TL SH-AWD V6 which had no check engine light, and a sudden loss of power above 3500 rpm. One of the catalytic convertors was clogged due to broken catalyst bits stuck in the exhaust mid pipe. Pulled out the pieces and it runs like a top again. Thank you very much 😊

@@alltsab actually it was the original 3rd catalytic convertor ( which luckily isn't monitored so no check engine light from gutting it either! )But the car has 163,000 miles and burns some oil which I think killed it quicker. The acura J37 v6's have oil consumption issues unfortunately.
@@LeoM-zt3ploh I can see that. Even though poor gas also killing the cat. Converter too. from 2010 and above seem like many Japanese made vehicles have consumption oil a lot. Toyota 4 cylinder is terrible.
You can test it with a back pressure gauge . There is also a test with a vacuum gauge . If you have a very advanced scan tool , there is a volumetric efficiency test . Otherwise , disconnect it and drive it to test .
@@gabrielsierra6890 I believe you put the gauge on a MANIFOLD vacuum line . Use the brake booster . Raise the RPM up to about 2000 . Instead of stabilizing to about 17 - 22 lbs. , it is much lower because it is restricted and not breathing . It could be a clogged CAT or exhaust . Make sure the air filter isn't clogged . The engine is an air pump . Air goes in and has to go out . I think there are a few videos on You Tube . A back pressure gauge goes into the front O2 hole . That is measuring the back pressure in the exhaust system . You also can remove the front O2 and find the car improves because you are allowing the back pressure to escape . If dual exhaust , remove both O2's or test one at a time .
Bro perfect description or explanation.. i was also having this problem n some sound (like a metal contact) from silencer too due to this cat issues.. all resolved now. Thx. I paid C$750/- including installation too..
Nice video! I think the cat is my problem with my 4runner too! Replaced the clutch components but the car was still low on power. Hoping for more videos from you!
Mine is also 21 yrs old haha I was like 4 years old when It was first registered 😂 but I'd rather buy a car cash than take one from the bank... Oh yes mine has 211 000 on the clock. My car is doing this same thing, I thought it was spark plugs because of the low power, but they were fine. Because of the sound I figured to check the exhaust system. And possible CC problem. Thank you for making this video!!!
Well said sir, my car got same problem but Machanic changed spark plug, o2 sensor no use then change transmission, NO use ( I spend lots of money) Finally my friend drove the car and told me it’s catalytic converters problem. Don’t go private Machanic’s all r making only money 💰
I wish I would have seen this video two months ago, I did change all those things. Including camshaft, rollers, injector ,were sideways only running on seven cylinders. Blown head gasket. And still truck doesn't run. Mechanic finally told me it's probably the catalytic converter.
Bro you just saved an f150!!!! I thought it was my differential but it does the exact same thing, I'm gonna get that serviced and ill be on my way. THANKS
You can also use a vacuum gage to check for a restricted exhaust system. Attach a vacuum gauge to an intake manifold source. Allow the engine to reach operating temperature. Note the vacuum reading at idle. Raise the revs to approximately 2,000 rpm. The vacuum reading should be close to the idle vacuum reading. Quickly release the throttle. The vacuum reading should momentarily rise, then smoothly return to the normal idle reading. If the reading does not quickly return to the normal level, the exhaust system is likely restricted. To confirm the exhaust system is restricted, you can remove the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
My truck is doing the same It runs fine but jerks and goes back to normal after speed is up and feel like it wants to turn off but I replaced spark plugs and coils and fuilds and the scanner won't pick up nothing transmission is good and alternator and battery
Before you change or replaces any parts. Google using 1 gallon of Lacquer Thinner in a half a tank of gas. I just got a P0420 check engine light and it wouldn’t go away. I used a few CATALYST CLEANER but that didn’t help. My car has 185,000 miles. I Googled P0420 people used the 1 Gallon of Lacquer Thinner. I said what do I have to lose. I went to Home Depot to buy it. I tried the 1 gallon of Lacquer Thinner in half a Tank of Gas. I cleared the check engine light before I drove my car. Now I drove 160 miles straight on Highways. You need to be driving highway speeds so the Lacquer thinner can clean and burn everything out. Right Before my car got to empty I filled up with super. So far 400 miles later no more check engine light. Update: After driving 470 miles the light came back on. I have to see what I will do next.
A very good test for sure right on mr good video I will be checking your channel because it's worth looking at and listening to you explain it good job
I love this guy! Thank you I think this is my issue. Fuel+air+spark=running engine. I’ve changed my plugs, coil pack, fuel filter, I’m running injector cleaner, the truck shifts fine. There gotta be two issues… I’m sure more but, it’s either a bad cat, or a bad fuel pump.
I am experiencing an issue with my Honda Jazz 1.3 CVT vehicle. When I press the accelerator pedal firmly to reach 1500 RPM, the car begins to jerk. However, if I apply gentle pressure, the jerking does not occur. This situation poses a safety hazard, particularly when driving on motorways, as it necessitates rapid acceleration. I kindly request your assistance in resolving this matter.

You're best to downshift and rev it. That's what I did in my Miata when my cat was clogged. At one point, I was standing on the gas pedal in first gear, and that seemed to sort it out. It makes a different noise now, but performance is back to normal. Should I be concerned?
Thanks for the video!! I thought my camshaft sensors were the issue with my car as it was jerking and fault code I got was p0340. But issue still the same so I will go ahead and clean out my cat converter. :) thanks for the video!!

sprayed an entire can of CARB CLEANER into a drilled hole just before the CATS with the engine running. Huge boost in performance! Likely cleared blockage.

If thst was a aftermarket one already and that one plugged up, the need to back track the cause, is it burning oil, is not running cleanly unburned fuel entering the CC......
I actually thought the same thing. CATs should last a long time but there are alot of variables that can make them go bad prematurely (driving crazy, maintenance neglected, or even the environment such as living near saltwater).
This is the best explanation I have ever been given for a clogged catalytic converter.

You very welcome buddy help me hit the subscribe ok thanks 😌👍

That is soooo true
It could be an air filter clogged too. Not in your case, but the symptoms. I also have had the same symptoms in the past and and the cause turned out to be all of these (not at once): Cat. converter, fuel filter and Mass Air-Flow sensor.
And yes, I replaced all ignition things you mentioned. Then even the intake gasket, all for nothing. I'm quite sure your suggestion is correct for me!
Thanks for the support subscribe buddy 👍

From a cat?
Clogged cat won’t hurt muffler it will hurt the engine . Cus it’s on the other side of the combustion. That’s why you seee the rpm gauges .
I just wanted to address the obvious my problem is fixed my catalytic converter is junk thanks again for the video
You welcome
Car having hard time going over 2 rpm. I checked plugs, air filter and other basics. Nothing. I removed upstream sensor from catalytic converter. Car went to 4 and 5 rpms no problem. It seems last place to check is where the problem starts. Now I'm going in right direction. Thanks for your video and time.
You welcome

Backyard mechanic way to tell if it's the CC. Pull the O2 sensor out of your down pipe near the exhaust manifold and if the car goes from running rough to normaling out when you pull that O2 sensor out, you know it's the catalytic converter.
A bad CC isn't absorbing emissions and is forcing back pressure back up into the engine. Pulling that O2 sensor allows that pressure to escape out of that O2 port. If you can afford it, take it to a mechanic and they can pull the engine computer data and it'll take them about 5 mins to diagnose it.
Well....in my case:
2000 camry V6.
Light on for 420 code all kinds of power.
3 O2 sensors and 3 cats later 2500$.
Bc the mechanic could not diagnose it the first time so he ended up replacing everything.
Stay away from Toyota especially with California emissions.
Explain better because the downstream o2 is not next to the exhaust manifold, that would be the upstream sensor
@@cyberpun2552he means the upstream sensor that is closer to the manifold.
i have a 02 silverado 1500 4.3 v6 with a p0420 code which i think is a clogged cat, which sensor would i have to pull off to test up or downstream?
@@bryan_trades8867 honestly could be either. I had the same code and changed the upstream sensor, then after changing it and clearing the code. I had a different code pop up for the catalytic inefficiency on the down stream sensor. The CEL reading should tell you which bank it’s coming from, but in your case(v6) I believe you have at least 3 02 sensors if I’m not mistaken.
this was exactly what i needed. i removed my cat and drove like a charm. i was so close giving up because i did everything from new plugs and new coil packs and new valve cover gasket and tube seals and nothing worked. thank you!
You welcome now you can help me subscribe thanks
How old is the catalytic?
@@MrKkdkk my car was an 08 so quite old.
Good to go.
You’re the man! You helped me so much with this video!

The very hot exhaust coming out of my truck is what lead me to pulling the catalytic converters off and I did find that the front cat is clogged. Now I need to find a way of cleaning it! Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Can't clean it brother have to be new only. Unless your state doesn't require smog inspection.
I was about 99 percent sure my cat was bad now I'm positive thank you!
Thank you so much with your help very appreciated 😊
You the man I'm glad there some good mechanics left
Thanks buddy
laser temp reader. They're like $20 and if the cat is plugged it's hotter upstream (closer to the engine) than it is downstream. When a cat works properly it should be hotter downstream. I dumped sea foam into mine after removing the upstream O2 sensor into the cat and it cleaned it up.
Seafoam states on their website that their product does not clean cats
@@FranciscoJavierOutdoors Its not a product made to clean cats. It worked for me and it's worked for others. Upstream was hotter than down while clogged. Ran the seafoam through and the down started reading hotter, like over 100 degree difference. I was told it might break down the honey comb eventually but had nothing to lose by doing it. If the honey comb breaks down I'll be back to where I was. There are also varying degrees of clogged. Mine was clogged enough to trip a code and show temps of being clogged, but it wasn't clogged bad enough to effect driving (there are two cats).
I have a 03 Lincoln towncar that does this now. Thank you so much. I’m going to a muffler shop asap
Yeah you spend money to the wrong direction buddy
“When/after u change it, it should RUN LIKE A CHAMP”. 🤣

Thank you very much 😊
Wow 2013 already have this type of problem. Could be made in China part lol 😂😂😂 glad you found this video thanks for watching and don't forget to help me subscribe 😊
Where do you measure the back pressure?

Well said sir, my car got same problem but Machanic changed spark plug, o2 sensor no use then change transmission, NO use ( I spend lots of money)
Finally my friend drove the car and told me it’s catalytic converters problem.

I wish I would have seen this video two months ago, I did change all those things. Including camshaft, rollers, injector ,were sideways only running on seven cylinders. Blown head gasket. And still truck doesn't run. Mechanic finally told me it's probably the catalytic converter.
You spent ton of money isn't it

I think this may be the problem of my vios..i have into different mechanics but the problem of power loss remains. Thanks a lot brother.
You welcome brother
Thanks for supporting me. I am appreciated very much.
Same problem with car, good video Bro
This is exactly what my Honda is doing. Going to check the cat. Thank you!

My truck is doing the same
It runs fine but jerks and goes back to normal after speed is up and feel like it wants to turn off but I replaced spark plugs and coils and fuilds and the scanner won't pick up nothing transmission is good and alternator and battery
Hi would a catalytic make a car jerk now and then while driving ? Feels like a fish bite
EXCELLENT VIDEO. Thank you. Indeed, it's not gonna be cheap...but it will be fixed.

For 20 years old that car is beautiful
My 1995 mustang v6 has 63k miles on it and it’s pristine
Thank you.. I think that this is what is wrong with my car.. new spark plugs and new coil and it still doesn't want to go over 40 mph

I believe you’re like 33% correct. You also have a muffler and resonator down stream which can plug also.

If thst was a aftermarket one already and that one plugged up, the need to back track the cause, is it burning oil, is not running cleanly unburned fuel entering the CC......
The after market cat is over 7years old already. You know how poor after market cat is right.
I actually thought the same thing. CATs should last a long time but there are alot of variables that can make them go bad prematurely (driving crazy, maintenance neglected, or even the environment such as living near saltwater).
If you suspect a plugged cat, just pull the O2 sensors before the cats and if you gain power it’s the cats.
Thanks got mine fixed that was the problem
