A driving cycle is a series of data points representing the speed of a vehicle versus time. Inspection Monitors like the Catalyst inspection monitor need to be complete in order to pass an emission test.
Driving cycles are produced by different countries and organizations to assess the performance of vehicles in various ways, as for example fuel consumption and polluting emissions.
Fuel consumption and emission tests are performed on chassis dynamometers. Tailpipe emissions are collected and measured to indicate the performance of the vehicle.
Another use for driving cycles is in vehicle simulations. More specifically, they are used in propulsion system simulations to predict performance of internal combustion engines, transmissions, electric drive systems, batteries, fuel cell systems, and similar components.
Some driving cycles are derived theoretically, as it is preferred in the European Union, whereas others are direct measurements of a driving pattern deemed representative.

@RANDOMFIX I need some help.. 2009 aveo p0301 and p0420 code I have replaced cam sensors crankshaft sensor fuel pump relay because it stopped starting and started once it was replaced... coils and plugs and an oem downstream 02 sensor to clear all other codes I have except these 2 the p0420 came on after using some.system cleaners realized last week my intake hose had a huge slit on the bottom and replaced it still have p0420 and p0301. I am losing power misfiring and horrible fuel efficiency. I have been looking at live data on my chesp obd reader it doesn't have graphs but does have the data I just don't know what they should be... Anyway, after intake hose replaced p0420 went away for a cpl days but it's back and still same issues. Prior to intake hose CATTEMP1 was reading 3 to 500F now it's reading 1000 to all the way up to 1475 today is that OK? and what would u think the issue is ? Fuel trims seem to be bouncing around a lot and reader also showing open loop fault and open loop driver even with engine hot when I have my foot on the pedal it will go close loop most the time and then switches back to OL-Fault .. I am low on funds and have a 6 year old I raise alone please help this is our only transportation..I think I could try this but my front 02 is on my manifold.
I would like to say to anyone who reads this I used sea foam to clean my catalytic converters I removed my 02 sensors from both cats and poured a can each into each catalytic converters and let it sit for a hour then put the 02 sensors back and started my truck and boy did it smoke for about 40min then to it for a drive to blow everything out and I got to tell you my performance came back and run a lot better. So for all then non believers out there I say nothing beats a fail but a try and everyone results will be different but it will be based on your method of cleaning. It may not work for everyone but letting the sea foam soak in the catalytic converters made a huge difference. Find your method.

@@anthonyslaughter1419 how long did it last for?
@@khoirani507 till I sold it, so a couple of months. I figure ones results will very based on how bad they are and how long you let them soak.
I had a P0420 code for the past year. I stressed, depressed & did not address until I found this video (and replaced my upstream air fuel sensor for my 4cl camry 07) and I never thought id say this but im officially one of those people that SWEARS by sea foam now because I used the whole can, and after I reconnected the terminal and started the car, the check engine light was gone. My cat was running 800 degrees lower in idle & my new air fuel sensor was at 3.3v (as it should be because my fuel was running rich before) thank you for posting this 😭😭😭🙏🫶 just helped me save 1000$ on car maintenance because everyone and their mama said I would need a new cat, it's not a sensor problem, blah blah blah but my baby is running smoother than ever at 212k (yes a camry) & even has a lil kick when I accelerate now🥰 can't thank u enough!!!
I’m glad the video helped with your Camry and setting the monitors and getting you a pass. Enjoy that $1000 on something fun!!! Happy Memorial Day.
@@RANDOMFIX thank you lol I never actually had 1000$ for the car which is why I so rigorously studied this video & others to perform everything so as to only have to invest in the sea foam, air fuel sensor (denso) & dielectric grease like I did 😭thank you though🥺
This worked 100% recommended. I did my 2005 v6 tacoma. I did not use the spray seafoam and just used the poured in version. I used a fluid siphon pump from harborfreight and pump it directly to the O2 sensor hole before the catalytic converter after removing the O2 air fuel ratio sensor. I installed back the sensor with anti-seize paste applied on the thread, then waited for about half an hour to soak the catalytic converter. After that, I started the truck and went to the freeway and smoke the crap out of the tail pipe. Came back and checked my live readings on my O2 sensor bank 2 on the idle and it read constant voltage and no more fluctuation and the pending code is gone. This is the best solution I saw so far that made sense and really worked.
Thanks for sharing your experience on your 2005 Tacoma and your success. I appreciate you taking the time to post this feedback
Hi this works?? Can you reply i have toyota tacoma v6 2008 whit this code say catalityc bad
You can use an air compressor with a siphon hose adapter on it,place it in the seafoam bottle and get good spray into the cat.
Nice ! Did you use the whole can ?
I have a 2006 taco and I have 2 af sensors...did you have the 4.0 or the 2.7?
This is, by far, the BEST, most logical and informative video on caring for a possible faulty CAT or if one gets the dreaded 0420 code. For some insane reason, (love ya Scotty but you're wrong), dropping lacquer thinner into a gas tank when IT THEN GETS COMBUSTED WILL SERVE NO PURPOSE AFTER BEING EXHAUSTED INSIDE THE CYLINDERS AS ITS CHEMICAL STRUCTURE CHANGES...and thus does not bring the chemical cleaning properties of lacquer thinner. The method in this video introduces the wet chemical solvent direct before combustion and does the job. I have done this and it works! I would add...also put in a can of regular SeaFoam into fuel tank along with cleaning the MAF sensor. This 3 item cleaning combo eliminated my 0420 code on TWO vehicles!!!
Hi Victor, thank you awesome feedback, you are correct that bypassing the combustion chamber really increase the effectiveness of the chemicals working to clean the catalyst. Scotty Kilmer to me has been posting any rant he can. One day he says this and the next minute he is saying something else that contradicts his previous viseo. I often feel he is making video to get viewers to watch a guy sitting him his room ranting. His older videos we're a little more hands.i wish him the best of luck and there is even a simpler method that i just need to record. My promise is I post that video before the end of the year to help people just like yourself. Thank you again. _Randomfix
@@RANDOMFIX I agree with everything you just said. TY
@@RANDOMFIX In addition, TODAY... I was servicing another vehicle, 2013 Ford Fiesta with a 0420 code. All numbers from scan tool were pointing directly to the CAT failing, not O2 sensors, not MAF, etc. There were high short term fuel trims numbers but could not locate any vacuum leaks using propane. Again, this would point to failing CAT. Today, removed pre CAT O2 and did the SeaFoam spray injection method per your video and as I have done before. Used less than half can. Re-installed sensor and drove for 10 minutes. Boy, did I start a firestorm... White smoke for miles. Caltrans workers flagging me down. Finally, a neighbor came over to complain like I was a gross polluter. Took 20 minutes for smoke to burn off. Then, I erased all the ECU memory via scan tool and drove for 30 miles to reset all PIDs on the computer, driving while monitoring scan tool. WELL!!! All sensors on this car, (42), came back 'green light' meaning, all codes came back positive including the CAT codes and temps. This method works!!! Anyone pouring lacquer thinner into a gas tank has a screw loose in their head. Does not work. Soaking a cold catylytic converter using SeaFoam Spray Top Engine Cleaner/Lubricant then driving for 20 minutes is the way to get your CAT back online providing it has not completely failed for an extended period of time. This video is a great "how to". Save $1000. Use this method.
@@victorvarisco5360 I got a avensis 2003 with p0430. Can i put some seafoam in the tank or do I have to realease the 02 sensor upstream both and go ahead like the video? Thanks for answers.
Release the the upstream oxygen sensor and use the seafoam. This is most direct method. The gas tanks is not as effective.
Thank you for this amazingly helpful video. I tried this out on a 2004 Lexus GX470 that was throwing a 0420 and 0430 whenever I was at higher altitudes. Cleaned all catalytic converters on the vehicle using this method, and sure enough, codes cleared and vehicle running like a champ.
Glad to help with your gx470 and thank you for the great feedback
I do it a little different. I jack up the rear end to put the car at a slight downhill angle. I take the 02 sensor out like you did. However, I squirt in about a cup full of Dawn detergent mixed in with water. I put back the 02 sensor and leave watwr and Dawn inside overnight. The next day I start the car and run it for 20 minutes, accelerating it from time to time. The Dawn abs water softens up what is clogging the cat and the exhaust pressure cleans out the cat. So far I have never had to replace the cat and my car has over 1/2 Million miles on it.
Thank you for the feedback and this great information!

@@RANDOMFIX it is a 2010 Nissan Sentrs SR. Yes, I did it to the Nissan after trying other things. I would buy a new CAT, but with over 250,000 Miles on the Nissan, I'm expecting a major engine or transmission repair that just won't be worth it. @@andynuck1772 yes this fixed my issue. I can’t guarantee it will work for you, but it was running better after about an hour of driving. Lots of smoke lol.
I sold it about a month ago, it kept having issues at 150k miles. Thermostat, water leak, oil leak
I've done this, but used carb cleaner, not sea foam. It did seem to help. One suggestion would be to get an inspection camera (they are not too expensive for a cheaper one that connects to one's phone), to actually see inside that hole. I could see the areas I sprayed and my first attempt mostly hit the side and most of the catalyst was not sprayed even thought I thought I was spraying all around.
I appreciate your feedback Sorry for the late reply, did you get this handled?
This method worked great the check engine light went off...Thanks for the info and details
I’m just now doin it and it worked thank you man keep these videos coming all the stressing I was doin for nun
Thank you buddy for the kind feedback and I am glad I was able to help you out with your catalyst converter problems.
Ironic how this cleaning method allows one to pass smog by releasing all the pollution it's captured into the atmosphere.
BTW, this fixed my P0420 😅
Thank you! Half a can saved me from buying a Cat installed for $1,550!
😂
😂 That kinda defeated the purpose of the Catalytic Converter lol, hell I'm doing mine at night! Wait until the EPA gets wind of this! 😂
It’s not epa, the epa is not strict but the California CARB is charge. It’s all about money, for example the federal warranty for emissions components is 8 years 80k miles but California has a 7 year 70k warranty instead. Think about the logic,
I’m in CA and was tempted to do this but your right it defeats the purpose and don’t want to contribute more bad air to the planet.
Cats don't capture pollution or they would NOT be called a "Converter"!
Converters convert from one thing to another.
2008 Honda Accord, stubborn p0420 code won’t go away despite of rislone, catclean and few more. NO SUCCESS, but today I tried your method, sprayed full can, o man!!! Did it ever smoked at least for 20 min, my neighbours thought my car or the house was on fire. So folks, don’t drive right away after using this product, you will cause an accident as drivers behind you, it’s like a white out winter storm effect. I drove 200 km today and my engine light did not show up😂
Thanks man 👍
Awesome feedback and yes the white smoke is something out of a movie. I’m glad the video was helpful for your 2008 honda accord. Now you have to set the catalyst monitor. I did this to a honda fit. The straw was more of a nuisance than an aide. Honda fit cat sits straight up behind the motor so I just remove the 02 senor as he showed. Then I at first tried the straw, then just sprayed it directly through the sensor hole w/o that straw. Worked great.

If you run seafoam through the air intake, will it clean carbon from the valves and also clean the catalitic converter
It won’t be as effective as doing it that way will not bypass the combustion chamber.
Your upstream oxygen sensor female connector looks newer. These connectors are relatively inexpensive, and not that hard to fix, so if you have an older vehicle, it is excellent preventive maintenance to go ahead and replace those female connectors. Just make sure that the wires go in the new connector EXACTLY the same as the old connector. The old connectors can often be removed simply by crushing them until they fall apart -- just don't damage the wire when doing this. Do it over a towel and all the scraps are easy to clean up. I had a coolant sensor go out and screw up my idle to the point the engine would shut down when I took my foot off the gas to press the brake to stop when the engine was cold. It never would have happened if I (or a previous owner) had put in new connectors before 340,000 miles! :-)
I saw a guy on youtubr here take a Cat apart and soak it in thinner and let it set over night. The thinner was still clean in the morning. It did nothiing,
I appreciate your constructive comments, thank you for the feedback!
I put seafoam in a pump sprayer and did this for a stubborn exhaust p0420. O2s were new and gas cap was new and cat was 1 yr old. This solved the issue on my land rover disco 2.
Did you spray into the o2 sensor hole or past the mass air flow sensor?
@RANDOMFIX for the Cat Cleaning I sprayed in the upstream sensor hole on the manifold exhaust. I bought a gallon can of seafoam. Was successful for me and less nasty smell. And also not getting p0420 so I'll take it as a temporary success. I don't mind trying ideas. I've been using seafoam for the air intake system for years. And fuel system. Only on older cars from before 2010. With so much electronics I been using a scanner and doing proper repairs. Just because the computers are so sensitive. And I don't know enough how to correct the failure of experiments.

I’m confused… if you go to the Sea Foam website under their Q&A it says that it will not clean a catalytic converter, only that it will not harm it. Perhaps they’re covering themselves from liability (?). I have the catalytic removed from my 98 Volvo. They’re is nothing wrong with it, but I need to weld the down pipes leading into it. Since it’s 25 y/o I figured I’d clean it. What about vinegar? That’s what I use on the catalytic on my wood stove.
I haven't tried vinegar personally but seaform would work. If I had it off the car I would try dawm dish soap. The whole I used seafoam was it because it was on the vehicle.
Do you do just the top o2 senseor inlet or also both o2 sensor inlet near the cataltic converter under the car too? Do you spray water down there too ti flush the system after letting it soak?
You remove the top or precast o2 sensor to spray. As far as cleaning you wound need a lot of seaform if you wanted to fill the cavity of the exhaust system to flush or wash out everything. I should the easiest way that would make the biggest difference. You could use a balloon on the downstream o2 sensor hole to plug the hole in case you wanted to fill the exhaust pipes with a cleaner or park at Angle 📐 but that is all over kill. If you don’t live in California or New York these cats are not that expensive ruclips.net/video/en6eKzyE_80/видео.htmlsi=SbUAQZED3kTAbTnt if you don’t mind doing the labor.
Great. I have read some say to be sure the car is running if spraying water down the top 02 sensor near the engine to be sure no water gets in the pistons during flushing it and perhaps rev a bit on the rpm? Does that make sense to you and help avoid any issues with that?
@grega.6984 if the vehicle is running and the engine is on you no be able get anything into the up stream o2 se air hole as there will lots of pressure and heat. Some people spray into the intake with engine on past the mass air flow sensor to clean the carbon deposit. I haven’t don’t that and will be trying that as if I really want to clean it I would just take it apart and clean it.
But I have had a Vw Jetta turbo that random misfire and I got some crc valve cleaner and Sprayed the whole bottle slowly as the vehicle ran and it took care my misfire and check engine light. But this depends on the vehicles, on that Vw I was really supposed to clean the intake with crushed walnut media and basically sand blast the intake once apart to get rid of all the carbon.
I hope that helps, it all depends on the vehicle and what you are trying achieve? Just want to clean the catalyst? How does it take for your vehicle to detect the catalyst is not operating effectively?
I am going to VA tomorrow with tools (in NC now)...daughter car broke down there. It would not start. Got diagnosed with plugged catalytic converter. Otherwise fine. The car will not start without taking off one of the O2 sensors to relieve back pressure now. My goal is to clean it enough without taking off the catalytic converter and drive it back home 3 hours to really fix it myself at home (maybe take it off and soak it in cleaner etc). It is a 2001 lexus rx300 with 2 catalytic covertors. What do you think on ideas to get it running enough to drive home 3 hours as initial goal? I have lacquer thinner, cataclean, borescope camera, sparkplug non foulers, pressure washer etc now fyi. I was hoping taking off the top 02 sensor would start and run the car and then I was going to clean spray lacquer thinner in the upstream hole on both and cataclean direct and run rpm for 15 to 30 min. Then dump gallon of lacquer thinner and cataclean in fuel tank too so it clean while driving home with the top 02 sensor removed? Thoughts and tips considering my issue here? :) Greg p.s. of course want to avoid damaging the pistons spraying down 02 sensor with thinner, cataclean, or seafom (no water based only petroleum) with engine off is safest?
but does it affect upstream and downstream Afterwards? running it it doesn't get on o2 sensors after?
Upstream will have no effect. Downstream has a chance of being affected but the chance is small. You could remove the downstream as well if it at the 6 o’clock position or too close to catalyst
Gonna give this a shot on my 2012 focus. It’s worth a shot
Thank you for the feedback!
Has anyone on here who did this and seemed to have success with it gotten any new check engine codes in the days, weeks, or months after cleaning the cat converters with seafoam?
As I mentioned in the video this only a temporary solution if your vehicle is burning motor oil for example. The burning oil will cover the catalyst really quickly but this method works. What are you driving, what codes do you? What caused the issue are the questions to ask when looking for a final and somewhat permanent solution.
Good luck and let me what you figure out.
Looks like this extraordinary method works 😮, I would like to know the amount of SEAFOAM I should use for my daughter’s car , thanks in advance .
Keeps on the vehicle, I would buy two cans as some vehicles have a bank 1 and bank two. Most 4 cylinder will be okay with 1 can.
@@RANDOMFIX THANKS ! 👍💪
My 2012 Odyssey has 3 cats, the bank 2 is throwing codes. Would i need to use it on the first one upstream, second or both?
Just bank 2 upstream.. before you do that try clear the codes and if that is only only code then complete a drive cycle but alway warm up the van for 20 minutes so the catalyst gets nice and hot and then drive. After 1 drive cycle if all the monitors are complete except the catalyst then do this ruclips.net/video/BuZYAy_xi0E/видео.htmlsi=VBMu5-Zat5kLAjKp
Good luck and keep me posted.
I've found, when replacing the O2 sensor, just cut the wire and use a regular 6 point socket or a box wrench when access permits.
Thank for sharing and I hear you. I just hate cutting something eventhough I know I will just tossing it trash.
But, you'll need the tool to torque the new one in.
Yes. Why not? Its trash. Amd way easier then those crappy sensor sockets that bend and break. 💯
O2 sensor wrench is the only way to go for me.
A more sophisticated approach might be to remove the pre cat and post cat sensors. Insert a balloon post cat and inflate via a tube. Pour a gallon of lacquer thinner pre cat and let the cat soak in thinner overnight. The balloon will hold the thinner in the cat. Deflate balloon and drain.
Might the lacquer thinner be too strong for the Cat?
Good idea but balloon would probably just melt
I appreciate your constructive comments, thank you for the feedback!

Hi RandomFix... I have a 2018 F150 with 2.7 Ecoboost and got a P430 code. I did this method and used up only half of the can of seafoam then drove it for over 50 miles. The check engine light did not come off. I also tapped on the Cat with a rubber mallet and did not hear any rattling sound. Should i go back and use the entire can?
Update: So, I did this again two more times. And each time I sprayed the seafoam I would also soak it for an hour before driving on the freeway for about 50 miles then I wait for about a week to do the next treatment. Then before I went to emissions test, I dropped a bottle of the CRC guarantee pass and the code didn't show back up. Its been about a month now and everything seems to be okay. Also my mpg increased from 18 to 21.4!
Do you have to disconnect the o2 sensor prior to spraying ?
yes, you need access to hole.
Using a can of liquid vs spray may not get the sea foam evenly as you can use the plastic tube from the spray type to point the spray to the whole converter rather than just the part by the sensor hole. just my thoughts.
Good feedback and I think that's right.
mine must be really plugged. I went through the process with a half a can on each side. I can't tell where it did much at all. I'm gonna let it cool and do it again.
And then I might be barking up the wrong tree, but to me it seems like back pressure building. It dies after a couple of minutes. I even thought it could be a plugged fuel line, but it is not the same.
If you thinks it back pressure just remove the downstream o2 sensor from the whole and see what happens.
By doing this it would it damage my downstream o2sensor ???
Better removed as well ? Any Input I would appreciate it .. thanks
I haven’t had any complaints about this but if you have the access to downstream o2 sensor than remove if it on the lowest part of the exhaust. I don’t think you are putting in that much fluid to fill the cavity. Good luck and keep me posted about your success. If you catalyst is borderline you may get away with some of the other methods I show in the catalyst monitor playlist.

Can I do this for my 2014 Prius V in California with that code.
The engine experienced missfire of #2.
After that I fixed the engine then that code was on.
You can do this for a Prius but what code are you getting? A misfire code or catalyst code?
Can this method be used for 2013 kia soul? I’ve seen warnings of not putting seafoam directly into the oxygen sensor port. Suggestions please?
Nothing is different on your Kia, you are just bypassing the combustion chamber and the engine completely so the only parts after the exhaust is the catalyst, the muffler, resonator, and the rear oxygen sensor. If you have the money I would recommend buying a new catalyst but for most people including myself a penny saved is better than a penny earned.
Keep me posted and happy holidays
Thanks so much! Happy Holidays!!
Interesting. My 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L developed a misfire in cylinder one while I was far from home. Drove it several hundred miles back, where I diagnosed a clogged fuel injector. Replaced all fuel injectors, which resolved the misfire, but two days later the dreaded P0420 code appeared.
A bottle of Cataclean failed to resolve the P0420. Was thinking of trying another bottle.
Do you think spraying Seafoam directly into the catalytic converter would be a better way to go?
Honestly since you injector was clogged I can imagine how this would lead to a p420 code unless it was spraying excessive fuel and it heated up the catalytic converters. I will reset and see what happens.
If it pops back up I would spray down the upstream o2 sensor hole. Is your smog test due anytime soon? If not this is going to affect your grand Cherokee! Anything other than a new catalyst is only a temporary solution. They do make direct fit catalyst converters for this 3.6 motor and they run under $200.
@@RANDOMFIX, thanks for your response. I tried resetting the code (erased it), but it came back after two days of driving.
No emissions testing this year. I have time to try different solutions.
Are you saying this is only fixable with a new catalyst? Or do you think spraying the catalyst with Seafoam is worth trying?
@DEValentine it’s worth trying So you can pass and pay thousands of dollars for a part on an old vehicle. It’s only a temporary fix as it will get dirty again and since the vehicle is older it will get dirtier faster.
I would not worry about a p420 code unless I had an emissions test in three months.
Can I do it on my Hyundai accent 2012? P0420 and PO130 code
Thanks for sharing this,I used the product Cataclean, however the warning light never went off,in your opinion, is this method more efficient when unclogging the converter???
Can you provide a little more detail on what caused the issue and current condition mechanically of the the vehicle? Make mode and miles as well.
@@RANDOMFIX I have a 2011 Nissan Sentra,I had it for about 3 years now. It's a right hand drive,it has high milage, however. One day about a few weeks back, the warning light came on,so I bought a bottle of Cataclean, I followed all the direction, however the warning light is still on.
I will be taking it to a garage very soon.
What code was set for the warning light?
@@RANDOMFIX I truly appreciate your feedback, the code that came up on the reader is P0420
Disconnect the battery. The light will go out. If you fixed it, the light will stay out. Otherwise, it will eventually come back on.
Would this lower my gas consumption ?
Will this work on Toyota Prius 2008?
Sure the ideas is the same. Your 2008 Prius is super easy for the catalyst to removed so you might want to uninstall and clean off the vehicle.
Good job
I appreciate your feedback
Replace oxygen sensor with dealer oxygen sensor , not aftermarket. Aftermarket often cause poor running. This goes for thermostats & other sensors.
Great feedback. And even pcv valve should be included on this list. I had to find this out the hard way on a 2013 nissan Altima that causes p0102 or 101 dtc. Lots of mechanics had tried replacing the maf sensor but in the engine it was pcv valve. Thanks you sharing.
If you don’t wanna pay dealer prices use Denzel is pretty close to OEM never had an issue
Are use the crows foot style O2 sensor remover. The other ones are junk. I know I do this every single day all they do is spread use the crows foot 02 sensor remover. He will get it out if it seized you replacing it break the porcelain off, heated up and put a shallow six point socket of it and it’ll come right out. There’s seals in the connector joker. and on the tools use a happy inch drive because you’re going to need some leverage at 3/8 drive will not do it so you’ll have to get the reducer and use half-inch extensions three eights for flex all over the place you will not get it. I’ve pulled too many out I know get the adapter half inch to three eights this clown. He doesn’t know what tools he needs.
I’ve had new NAPA O2 sensors be bad out of the box.
I got the P0420 error on my used 2016 CRV in January end. I bought the vehicle last Dec 2022 from auto dealer in Wisconsin and drove all the way back to Minneapolis. The vehicle had clean Carfax which showed regular service changes done as per Honda recommended that I verified as well before buying. The vehicle has 124,000 miles on it. When I got the CEL I took to the local Honda dealer and he charged for check engine light and erased the code via ECM/PCM. The error came back again after 4 weeks and just when I thought of going back to the dealer the code/check engine light itself disappeared for a week but came back again a couple of days back. I took it to the dealer again today and he says technician checked o2 sensor and exhaust leak and they are not a problem. He has given me an estimate now for catalytic converter change and has quoted close to $1700! I do not have the budget now and would like to try this method or May be try any other liquid catalytic cleaner via gas intake. A local mechanic suggested to try erasing the code 3 times before taking any decision spending so much money. I have now erased the code 2 times. What are your thoughts please or what do you suggest on any best liquid cleaner I can try now??? I am planning to do what you have here in the video but would like to confirm before trying the same.

Sorry to hear about catalyst issues, so there are no permanent fixes for this other a new catalyst.
With all of that said I made a whole playlist for just this issue, I think it may be a easier to find you own solution ruclips.net/p/PLDEbtVOPRC-h1BAzaWQ-6NSnmG0gwvgwP and depending on what state you live there are direct connect catalyst for under $150 that I show on the playlist. If you purchase a new catalyst you have a regular muffler shop install it for less than 250. Before you install a new catalyst you need to as yourself what caused this issue? Good luck and keep me in the loop.
@@RANDOMFIX will watch the video one by one when I get some time. Thank you for the reply.
@worldpeace5853 what did you end up doing? I have the same problem with my CRV. I usually just put a bottle of Cataclean in the gas tank and it goes away for several months. Certainly not a permanent solution.
@@louisemosrie6405 I tried the Cataclean but the light went off temporarily but came back again. I will need to change the downstream sensor. It is a real pain for sure.
Yes the only permanent solution is a new catalyst but please understand you do don’t need to pay 1700 for a new catalyst because they are direct catalyst for under $200. Check my catalytic converters video playslist.

Ok I have replaced 02 sensors and still getting code grrrrr! So my truck is a 2017 GMC Sierra that GMC had to replace the motor because of the lifter issue . Check engine light came on after I got it back, I think this happened because of the failure on the right side of my engine . Code is for bank 2 cat which is the passenger side cat. It is a new motor so I’m going to try this and see if it works, fingers crossed. I will let you all know if this solves my issue .
Best of luck!
@@RANDOMFIX how long do u think I should let it soak? I did it this evening and it’s been sitting for about an hour. Oh I also added a can to the fuel ! The spray can came with a can to put in the fuel tank .
they never show the comparison of before and after and then driving the 40-60 miles after cleaning the and then erasing the code.... Id like to see them show and prove that spraying seafoam in the cat actually works.
well I can say I did this and it worked for me. I didn't drive 40-60 miles I just started and let it run until most of the seafoam burned off. I then drove it around my neighborhood for maybe at the most 10 minutes. During that time I would see the seafoam still burn off, like when stopped at a stop sign I would see a puff of white smoke and during take off. It then all cleared out. Also I did clear all my codes before I went for test drive.
I tried this two years ago, thinking that spraying directly through A/F sensor was pretty sophisticated, all it did was make a ton of smoke and wipe out the neighbors, but cleaned nothing. I also never use dielectric grease or anti-seize. All not the best ideas.
@@girohead
Good luck removing the sensor later. They even send anti-seize with new sensors.
@@robertrose3068 I use the anti-seize that comes with parts, but I don't overuse and get more for everything, like lug nuts, etc. In this case my upstream O2 sensor was for Corolla and it has a flange with two studs/nuts, not threaded into exhaust pipe - so I don't think I used antiseize on those studs.
Sorry for the late reply! did you find a solution?
I would like to try this on my Mercury Mariner. Will it work if the Cat is under the vehicle?
It would be the same process but way look into some way of angling the vehicle up so the fluid does not pour out as you might be using a lot of seafoam. Others have mentioned using a balloon 🎈 on the rear o2 sensor hole.
But will it remove p0420 ? Will it pass smog? Thats the point question? ❓❓❓
2014 ford focus has p0420 code and i repalced the down stream o2 sensor do i replace upstream sensor and do this seafoam trick?
If you replace both of o2 sensors that you should have a easier time setting the catalyst monitor. Please check for exhaust leaks.
Do you know if this works on an Audi A4 2012 ? Does anyone else here use this on their B8 ?

Hi Hector,
Greetings from Texas to Puerto Rico 🇵🇷.
Unless you have an emissions test I would not worry about it.
You catalyst can old and the p420 code can turn even if there is a loss of 4 percent in efficiency. Since your is not getting triggered right away you may get lucky by doing this ruclips.net/video/BuZYAy_xi0E/видео.htmlsi=W24o20r-UXeBHo8S or this if your vehicle is burning a little oil

@hectorpenamedina4817 nice, el paseo is 12 hours from me. Texas is big, you may want to try what I did on that honda. You need burn off all the oil off the catalyst. Also check your pcv valve to make sure it’s not the issue that is causing the oil consumption. If it’s anything else it’s won’t be a fix.

I wish my O2 sensor is easy as this video, I have a Toyota Prius, the Amazon o2 sensor removal doesn’t fit and I’ve seen some people have to cut the heat shield to able to replace them. It’s a nightmare.
Why not just remove it and clean it? Or you can buy a direct fit for 118 catalytic converter ruclips.net/video/Wr1vFqCnpDc/видео.htmlsi=6aLLk2DUJRGRgD2F and there you will find other ideas as well.
My 02 up stream was going out every year because of the fuel injector were sticking open when they should be closed my muffler tip was black 👍I used lacquer thinner 1 gallon to 8 gallon of gas it worked for me my truck 01tacoma 4 banger it clean the cat also Remember don't leave the fuel in the car tank burn it out as fast as u can in 2 hours time will not hert the car only fuel injector cars do this to not carb cars ✌️
So did the lacquer thinner help your fuel injectors or that issue still present?
A small vice grip will work to.
What do you use the vice grips for?
A vice grip with a breaker bar on the end will work in a jam. Or even a pipe or basen wrench could also work just don't strip the sensor!
Great

@RANDOMFIX Thank you so much for the your video. What I'm trying to determine now is if that oxygen sensor in the engine bay (the upstream oxygen sensor you mentioned in the video) is also called an air-fuel ratio sensor? My car is 2011 Honda Odyssey, the sensor in the engine bay is called air fuel ratio sensor,I want to make sure if both are the same thing.Looking forward to your reply.
Yes, it’s same thing for the purposes of this video, it’s only before the catalyst. This is known as the upstream or o2 sensor.
@@RANDOMFIX can i spray seafoam spray into my downstream catalytic converter also while im at it?

So I have a p0420 code that I’ve been. dealing with , the voltage on the downstream is doing the same as the upstream. I was doing a drive cycle the all monitors set except the evap and the oxygen monitor at first but then as soon as the oxygen monitor set the p0420 code came back I recently changed up the upstream so do you think the downstream is just faulty ?
It could be or maybe a very poor functioning catalyst. I would try catacllean or the duralast catalyst treatment ( cheaper) and see how things go. Really let the vehicle warm up and figure out what is your goal. Is it just to pass this year or fix the problem?
@@RANDOMFIX took it to a repair shop it was a hole in a my flex pipe 🤣
Awesome and thank you for the update about the update.
Late to the show but sometimes O2 sensors (or any aftermarket parts) are bad right out of the box. Make sure your replacement parts are actually working.
Would you consider this a temporary fix or one that really takes care of it for some time? I don’t have any lights on, nor do I live in a state where there are inspections, but I can smell the cat going bad, and also can tell the lack of power going up hills. Just wondering. Great vid!
It’s only a temporary fix as the only fix is a new catalyst but in some places like California the cats are 1 thousand plus to about 3k. I live in text Texas in a county that doesn’t smog and if I had your issue I could confirm if the catalyst is really bad. Maybe it’s clogged badly?
Then I would hallow it out! This all depends on what your driving, your vehicle might a little louder but it will gain the power if the catalyst is really the problem if clogged. Keep me posted on what you do.
Will this work on my 2014 Hyundai Accent Gls
yes, just make sure the catalyst is last unset monitor. Keep me posted
Had the cat fail on our 2001 Nissan after my beloved forgot to put oil in her car. I am wondering of its too far gone since it is now clogged to the level that it is effecting the cars performance. Any thoughts?
If oil wasn't put in the car, I'm afraid the cat is the least of your worries. Your engine is most likely fucked up. At least you can run a car without a cat if you don't live in CA as far as I know
Thankfully we caught it in time. Wishing I had tried this method since when I pulled the cat it was blocked but not broken up. I'm sure this or the the soaking method would have done the trick. 2 bolts broke off and the project is gaining I'm scope. I'm ordering a new cat and going to drill out the bolts.
I'm on a fresh engine rebuild with used cats that have a lot of miles on them but I have no codes what's it going to do for me I mean if it doesn't improve my gas mileage it'll be a waste of time I live in a state that they don't care about admissions
Unless you catalyst is clogged I won’t worry about it. However for best performance many people hallow out their catalyst but again this might throw a check engine light which can be fixed with a o2 spacer on the downstream oxygen sensor or a o2 simulator.
Seafoam is aggressive and necessary used correctly and you will be amazed with the results going to vacuum first second do the gas treatment third to the oil treatment for Fourth sprayed directly into the cat as this video it showed gas mileage performance piece of mine are waiting for you

An easier explanation of upstream vs. downstream would be upstream is before cat. Downstream is after cat. 🤷

i sprayed this directly on my cat combs but didn't clean it enough. Can I spray carb cleaner instead?
You could try it but I'm sure what kind of results you will get. Remember the only real solution is a new catalyst.
is that the upstream sensor?
Yes pre cat o2 sensor
@@RANDOMFIX great. Thank you!
This only works on a catalytic converter that the honeycomb filters havent melted, if you get a p0420, p0421 or others for catalytic converter codes as soon as you get the code park vehicle to reduce the risk of melting the honeycomb filters inside the catalytic converter by running rich then do what RANDOMFIX did in his video and you can save yourself lots of money for maybe a year or longer, also after doing his method fix any other check engine lights you may have say misfires ect as misfires cause rich conditions that can clog up a catalytic converter, so do a full tune up after to avoid ruining your cats!
great info, Thank you for sharing. So you recommending doing a tune as soon as you trigger a p420?
@@RANDOMFIX Yes beacuse the reason your catalytic converter fails is because of a rich/lean condition, so check spark splugs, spark plug wires, or coilpacks, or on older cars distributor cap and rotor, then replace whats old to avoid more failure to catalytic converter, in my case my car ran lean and plugged up my catalytic converter so the sea foam spray trick didnt work had to replace my catalytic converter.
Could it be that the “Econ” button being on constantly causes these issues with CRVs? Curious.

If you vehicle has an inspection due than get it ready by performing a drive cycle but if there is no inspection due then keep on driving as it does not affect the performance. Just make sure you don’t need new spark plugs and that your fuel injectors are not clogged.
@@RANDOMFIX thank you the state I live in DONT do inspection but will check spark plugs
Will this work if I have two catalytic converter and will it pass inspection I am not a mancanic but I do know how to do simple stuff
Yes, this will work if you have 1 cat 2 or 4. For best results treat all of them but pay extra attention to cat that throwing the code. Keep me posted.
I'll share my experience. I am a DIYer, I'm not a mechanic or knowledgeable reading an advanced scan tool.
Having said that, I've had a persistent p0172 in a 2005 Honda Pilot since 2019. I did throw parts. New 02 Sensors, EGR Valve. Everything else were maintenance items due to mileage and cost. Replaced spark plugs and coils. I did my first Valve Adjustment at 259K Miles. p0172 went away. It ran much better.
I passed smog. I was informed I had a pending p0420. I checked the converter by taking the sensor 2 out and looking inside with a borescope. The catalyst was intact and not in pieces. I bought a seafoam kit from Walmart today. I poured the 14 ounces in and sprayed half the other can. Iet it sit for over an hour. I did this on a warm engine aftet driving it and letting it sit an hour. As I thought the Seafoam would do better at removing any contaminants with some heat vs a cold engine. The engine was safe to touch and not excessively warm/hot. I used a small funnel and tubing to safely pour in the Seafoam. I then sprayed the Seafoam product as evenly as possible with the flexible straw. I let it sit for an hour before driving.
My shit blew smoke like a diesel with no DPF. Ran it hard on the freeway. My Sensor 2 on Bank 1 now runs steady and matches Bank 2. Bank 2 ran fine and used it as a reference.
This does work. For how long? I do not know. I will update this comment in 6 months, then a year or if the CEL comes back.
Update: I also I wanted to add I used Cataclean and a Catalyst cleaner from Duralube in the last 90 days. Save your money. I'm not a chemist, but I doubt those cleaners help. They're overpriced fuel system cleaners. I still do not have any pending codes and all systems monitors cleared.
