Ah, drum solos, he sighs. It has become part of the implied contract with the customer that the drummer in (certainly) a drummer-led band will always take a solo - and I never had the strength to say no. I admire better players who seem to have endless ways of going about this - fresh every time. But I had electronics…
This solo is really a little slice of history, not necessarily for the performance, but rather as a stopping-off point in the development of electronic drums. This is from a trio gig with Japanese guitar star Kazumi Watanabe and Jeff Berlin on bass. For the drumheads out there, this is basically a Simmons SDS 9 kit with lots of midi assignments to a Yamaha keyboard (I don’t think a module was available back then, so I had to lug a whole keyboard around) which is producing the pitches and patches. More interesting than the nuts and bolts, though, is the idea of drums and melody which I got a pretty interested in in the late 80s and 90s. Earthworks was formed around these ideas.
Drums have indefinite or semi-definite pitch. That is, they are usually not tuned to specific notes, but we all hear one drum as of a higher or lower pitch than another. But with pads and a pair of sticks, I was effectively ‘playing’ the keyboard with sticks and a drummer’s sensibility. The front of ‘Stromboli Kicks’ or ‘All Heaven Broke Loose’ or all of ‘Pilgrims Way’ or ‘Up North’ would be examples from the Earthworks songbook. So my playing, most obviously in solos, could become pitched and take on more expressive, melodic characteristics, leading the listener away from normal expectations of what a ‘drum solo’ is supposed to be, or indeed what a drummer is supposed to do. That got me off the hook of having to compete in tedious Olympian demonstrations of drum technique - the Fastest Drummer in the West, etc. Maybe drums could play tunes?
By the beginning of the 2000s I was usually to be found in an acoustic duo with pianist Michiel Borstlap, and the ‘smaller’ solos I did then nevertheless tried to evoke a sense of melodic phrasing, much informed by my earlier days with electronics. Stay tuned: hopefully we’ll get some more of this trio’s tracks up soon.

Truly brilliant!A blend of eastern mysticism with gamelan(is that the right spelling!?).Very few drummers would have the finesse or lightness of touch to turn their drums into a musical instrument in such a creative way.

Would love to see more video of this show. I'd completely forgotten about this collab with Kazumi & haven't listened to it in probably 20 years or more.

Building on Indiscipline. You can hear why Robert needed Bill in 80s and 90s Crim. And you can tell why Bill's creativity may have occasionally annoyed Robert, too.

I was thinking the same thing, but his own admission of a "limp" tympani grip may have worked in his favor. My favorite drummer ever. Peart, Schmeart.

Those are the later SDS 9 pads (Mark IV). They had a floating rubber playing surface much like a practice pad so they actually feel pretty good. The early pads (circa SDS V) were the ones with the super hard playing surface.

Now that's what I call a drum solo. There were a couple moments where I couldn't follow what you were doing (and not in a good way, though it's not inconceivable that the fault lies with me), but there is such a richness and variety of spirit here. You never once feel like you're just marking time. And the bits where you play both rhythm and melody are positively ear-opening, taking the drum solo format to whole new places. Thanks for posting this for us all to hear.
