  • OCCIPITAL NEURALGIA EXERCISES | STRETCHES FOR OCCIPITAL NEURALGIA || Stephen Dunn, Holistic Physical Therapist, Pilates & Gyrotonic Instructor, Author, Online Course Creator, Business Coach, Podcast Host & co-owner of CORE Therapy and Pilates teaches an essential unknown stretch and one exercise to improve occipital neuralgia.
Is Occipital neuralgia bothering the base of your skull and behind your eyes? Watch this video to learn more! Why is occipital neuralgia causing so much pain in my life? By the end of this you will know the essential stretch no one is talking about and the best exercise to help improve your occipital neuralgia symptoms.… I’ve helped hundreds of patients with this condition over the past two decades and can’t wait to teach you. Why is occipital neuralgia causing so much pain in my life? The nerve between the skull and the first cervical vertebra is compressed. This is caused by forward head posture putting pressure on the occipital nerve causing occipital neuralgia. The muscles in front that we want to stretch are the platysma and scalene. Place your hand under the collar bone and look up and over the opposite shoulder and hold for 4-5 deep breaths. Next, we will do the chin tuck exercise by pulling your head back and up to relieve the pressure on the occipital nerve.

Thank you so much for that first stretch! I always tell them it's the front of my neck that hurts and feels tight like it's pulling my jaw muscles and yet they always "treat" the back of the neck.... (I'm in round two of physical therapy for my neck)

Yes, I do. But I also have a leftward compressed nerve from stenosis at C4/C5, so it makes part of this hard to do (the first stretch, to the right side). To top it all off I have a torn labrum & biceps tendenitis in my right shoulder, so some of my PT exercises for my stenosis agitate that and vice versa...
I have also had a TLIF (L5/S1) - but this, while painful, is no longer consequential.
I've applied for an entirely new musculoskeletal system; interestingly, insurance has not agreed to this! :-D
Are you in Austin? I graduated from college there yeeeears ago, when it was much smaller and less California-fied (coincidentally where I live now).
If you have other exercises for suggestion, I'm all eyes.

@Gretchen Harbourt I get this a few times a year too, waking up with this pain. I had it last night from about 10:30pm until around 1am. And then it came back the next day, I know its from posture and truly from furniture that doesn’t support my back in sitting up straighter (old arm chair and sofa that isn’t firm, and looking at iPad🙃😕. And in past was from bad pillows, ugh.

I used to have this issue occasionally when I was a kid. I'm glad to hear it actually has a name.
It only lasted about two seconds but it felt like a ring of electricity travelling up from the based of the head to the top of the scalp where the ring would come together and zap the top of the head leaving a slightly painful burning sensation.
It hasn't happened in years and it was a very uncommon thing, probably happened three or four times during my childhood.

Hi Stephen. Thanks for those exercises. It turns out I was doing my chin tucks incorrectly as my PT never told me to lift my head up as I draw the chin back. I'm having tingling sensations in the upper right back portion of my head. My head is feeling less strange after doing the exercises. Thanks so much!

my struggle is every neck stretch I have done so far causes me nausea. I will try these. God has blessed me with great compassionate doctors and physical therapists. Honestly I would rather have surgery than more steroid shots in my neck. I have had two shots in the facets of my spine(first helped but second didn't seem to) and two epidural shots in lower spine and they made a huge difference. Now my neck is having issues. SO hopefully the MRI will show what ever is going on. I know surgery would be much harder to recover from. Praying God will take control, as He always is in control, and will show the doctors exactly what is going on and what the best procedure is to do.

I have horrible swishing (like my heartbeat sound) in my ears for almost four years now…. They can’t find anything wrong but I have these symptoms that match this nerve pain in the base of my neck and skull! I feel like the swishing sound stems from my collarbone area and into my neck and base of my skull. I start PT next week, I am hoping this helps! Definitely trying these stretches tonight!

I'll try this to see if it works. I'm not sure I have ON or not, it's a pain that hits me on the biggest muscle behind my left ear lobe. I wouldn't describe it like an electric shock but definitely like a pinched nerve. I've had it now for about 6-months, some days there's nothing, other days I have it almost all day. Oddly I never experience it during heavy lift sessions, more from when I'm relaxed (like slouching) or if I'm looking over my shoulder to the right (that's a product of working on a tractor). So far the only relief I have found is digging my fingers into my left upper trap, that or looking up at the sky which seems to pinch my neck but also relieves the pain somewhat. Otherwise it'll go as quickly as it comes. It's weird.

Wow this has just help me recover thankyou sir

I think I have occipital neuralgia. A 40 year old car accident hurt my neck and the neuralgia I’ve been plagued with likely comes from that. I’ll be doing you exercises again, hoping for relief. Thanx for sharing~

The first one made a difference quickly. The pain is still there, but lessened greatly. As a miner I'm steady looking up and with a hard hat on its extra weight and hard on my neck. What set it off was sleeping on a floor I believe.
