- Dr. Rowe shows how to INSTANTLY relieve neck pain at the base of the skull. All of these exercises can be done at home and require no special equipment.
In this video, we're going to deal with the muscles at the base of the skull, the upper neck, notably the SUB-OCCIPITAL muscles.
When these upper neck muscles become tight and achy they may cause a lot of issues including tension HEADACHES, loss of motion into the neck, and just downright PAIN.
Let's RELIEVE this upper neck pain in a very easy step-by-step guide. We're going to focus on self-massaging those muscles, stretching them out, and also strengthening them -- so hopefully we'll have a lot less issues of neck pain in the future.
All of these exercises can be done AT HOME, don't require any special equipment, and may give quick relief -- even in as little as 30 SECONDS!
So let's get started and get rid of that pain at the base of the skull right now!

I also found that freezing my neck with my frozen EYE Pack tied around my neck helps take away pain.
is this useful if neck instability is the diagnosis? these exercises are making even more pain when im doing them, especially nodding down. when I nod downwards, I feel pain in the head joints. Walking, sitting and standing is almost impossible, just laying the whole time... Pls advice
@@vickiserre9457 I do the same but with my eye mask strapped around the back of my head, but heated. Seems to help relax the muscles & luckily it's a perfect fit.
@@clairemyhill4121 I have done the same as you except I always use ICE. Heat relieves pain but Ice takes away inflammation too. 👏
@@vickiserre9457 Yes I'd use it frozen if I needed too. Luckily I don't have any inflammation x
One thing they taught me in massage academy, that I really wish had been mentioned here, was to beware of working on specific areas like the neck more than a few times a week at most, because it can lead to tissue damage if you don’t allow for proper healing time. Especially if you’re doing muscle scraping. The last thing you want to do is give yourself permanent damage by fixing an issue too often. There’s a fine line between doing what feels good, and knowing what your body needs in the long term.
Good to know. I’ve had muscle knots for multiple months now under my neck, I’m always massaging them trying to get rid of them yet they come back anyways. Do you think it’s better to leave them and just accept the pain? Even when I go to massage they still come back unfortunately they also cause me headaches
@@shaydlens u shouldn’t just accept the pain u should see a doctor if you haven’t already u could have an adhesion in ur neck which isn’t a knot it’s scar tissue. acupuncture deep tissue message from a professional and stretching and exceruze with a physical theorist can help break up the adhesion in ur neck but first you need a CT scan or MRI to see if you actually have one usually caused by trauma and the constant messaging of ur neck
@@sethdilbeck1999 I stopped massaging it and the neck pain is no longer there.
So what do you suggest then?
Geez 😢
I just wanted to say thank you for being so generous with your knowledge. It is greatly appreciated. Bless you.
Just happy to help, and thanks so much for watching!

@@TheRealMisterChopShop Please, make an appointment with a chiropractor. It sounds like you may have some underlying issues. If nothing else, please make an appt to be seen by a medical doctor.
God Bless and take care. 🙏🏼

Amen my neck feels a lot better after this
gooday mate, im 70 broke my neck at 9, pain all my life a busy full on life too, needed a variaty of pain killers all my life as well. mildly did my version of your exercises in the early evening, honestly an ache until later in the evening then a warm pleasant feeling below my head. following day went about my usual activities, had lunch and realised i had been unaware of my neck so far all day, first time im sure. this is the first time ive walked around with my mind in grin mode, if you know what i mean. thank you so much for opening up my mind to a realistic method of getting on with life. i wish i knew this before.
For the first time in a week, I'm not in absolute pain at all hours of the day. Thank you
That’s wonderful!
yes and i can sleep, as well
I am a Certified Massage Therapist and I recommend your channel to my clients for exercise tips. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!!!! ❤️👍🏼🙏
Happy to help, and thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you for sharing this kind of video❤️
I'm still struggling to fix my ongoing neck issues, but I've also found that press ups against a wall (hands at shoulder height, feet about 18 - 24 inches away from wall, squeezing shoulder blades together as I sink upper body towards the wall) really helps when it starts to affect the back of my skull. For anyone who might also benefit.
I'm having a go at that - thank you
Stumbled into this, I am 23 and for the last 2 years my neck has been dull, aching and grating. After using these exercises I have felt instant relief for the first time in these two years. Thankyou so much.
Glad you found the video!
Hey I am 24 and dealing with this shit for 6 months now ... How are you managing it brother tell me
Jacob my neck began causing my pain at 23--after I was hit by a semi. I will be 70 next year and only became worse. I so hope that these help you and you can find the exact cause of your pain. I had to retire early--a couple of years ago because the neck -arm pain also causes me so much dizziness I fall on MY patients. I really DO miss working
Thank you. I’ve had pain at the base of my skull, chronically, for years. I did as instructed on the video, with the big spoon, with the video. Whew, much pain relief!!! It’s like a big breath of fresh air. I had almost forgotten the feeling of no pain and stiffness. WOW!!!! Thank you so much. Texas
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching too.
This guy is the best decompression and pain relief channel on RUclips 💯
I cannot believe it! Tonight my headache over one eye was particularly bad and I was feeling a bit desperate. I had an inkling it might be something to do with tight shoulder and neck muscles, but this video practically read my mind, it just jumped into my youtube feed and I had not searched for anything to do with it. Miracle!! I tried the spoon technique and it was very effective, I carried on with shoulder and neck massages and I feel so much better. My headache is gone. Thank you so much for your no nonsense approach and for appearing out of nowhere. Sorry for long review, just feel so relieved!!
Wonderful to hear you’re getting relief!
Yes, I feel the same, it's like my left eye's gonna pop out because the left side of my neck is si sore and stiff, and it's only bt chance when I turn on the youtube I find this guy explaining how to release muscle pains on the neck. I am so thankful I watch it.
The phones are amazing at knowing what you’re thinking…
Sammneee!!! The pain felt like it was literally tugging at my eye from the inside. I almost cried after doing these because it’s the first time I felt relief after five days of no sleep and lots of tears and pain killers. I wish I’d looked up this video sooner
I haven't been able to move my neck properly in months, this legitimately provided immediate relief. Glad I found your channel.
Glad you're getting a lot of relief!
In tears because this has gotten so bad that my eyes are puffed up, sinuses acting up, could barely interact with others bc all I can think about is the pain....
Thank you sir 😔❤❤❤
Hope the exercises help!
you are a life saver this pain makes me sometimes physically sick nauseaus and feverish thank you
Hope these exercises end up helping, and please give us an update soon.
@@DrRowe its not daily dont worry :D
its like 10x a year at most but after trying this for not even one day i feel a lot better
@@DrRowe turns out its occipital neuralgia according to my doc... the nausea and fever spikes are from sudden but short inflammations or smth (also the reason why its only on the left side)

I can’t thank you enough for your experience and suggestions. I have been suffering with neck pain and severe daily headaches for a very long time and tried every way to get rid of them. When I saw this video, I literally felt like crying as this was one more thing I could try thank would give me some hope. I didn’t know how I could cope with these symptoms for the rest of my life. I have severe anxiety and try staying as busy as possible but these symptoms prevent me from enjoying anything. I hold and rub my forehead and the lower back of the head all day long so watching your video targeting these areas made me so happy. I am 64 years old and now will be a dedicated subscriber. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you for sharing Doc I really needed this🙏
Thank you!! Major difference.
I felt an instant relief after doing this excercise. Your videos have been helping me with my neck pain for a while now, so I wanted to say thank you. I will keep recommending this channel to my friends so we can make it grow a little bit more.

Ty. Already loosening up. So glad I saw these exercises.
You just saved me today. I had a stiff neck and back after lifting some weights incorrectly for about 2 weeks and after watching your video, just within 5 minutes I could feel my body almost returning to normal. Thanks you.
Wonderful to hear you’re getting quick relief, and thanks for watching!
Did it stay that way?
this is really good myofacial
massage it works for migraines as well
@A710 what kind of question is that? He said he felt better.
Likely it was a question inquiring if the relief was lasting after some time had passed? Shouldn't be controversial.
I'm getting nuts...My neck hasn't felt any pain relief since 18 years.
I followed all your instructions and right now I feel like 20 again.
Thank you so much, cuz nothing had worked.
I tried some sport techniques, I went to a professional massage, my partner tried to massage me, but I never had the opportunity to get to two extremly painful spots.
Thanks a billion times!!!
Really glad you found this video and it’s helping, and thanks for watching!
So glad I found this channel, Very helpful.

Your 1st demonstration was exactly what was needed! I felt knots on both sides of my upper neck below my skull and kept pressing down on it with the handle of the spoon until the bumps were gone! First time they have ever been worked out and my neck feels incredible. I also never thought about blood flow being valuable for healing. Thank you for all your work and videos. Your channel deserves millions of subscribers and views and all the greatness headed your way 🙏

I've had intermittent neck pain for the past 5 years whenever I would do certain activities, steadily getting worse, to the point where the pain was interfering with everyday activities. I finally realized it was tendonitis and these stretching exercises, 3x per day for the past two weeks, are keeping the pain at bay. What a relief to have such a simple resolution!
Always amazing videos!! Thank you.
Thanks again for watching!
thank you so much. I tried the first 2 techniques and I felt muchl better. definitely will try more of your techniques. good job
Dang, did only one repetition of most of these and I can already feel a huge relief! I've suffered from pains at the base of the skull for more than a decade. I'll be using these to help with the pain and discomfort on a daily basis.
Hope the exercises help for a long time to come, and thanks for watching!
@@DrRowe does this take the pain away completely or just help it?
I can DITTO that reaction. Boy did this stretch helped immediately !! No Meds, no huge & expensive equipment, and was never relayed to me by any of the 6 Chiros I have visited for the past 12 years. This dr. does emphasize Forward head Posture, many on the Interweb do. They warn that if you think Diabetes is at epidemic levels, Wait until the affects of Tech Neck hits the population. Sitting in front of a PC, looking down at your phone constantly, poor Posture in genertal, and especially if you have long Commuter drives (like me for 48 years). I'm 70 YO, and suffer with Chronic pain / stiffness / tempral headaches/ TMJ/ Chronic Sinusistis, Tinnitus, IBS / GERD , even incontinence - all stemming form the Cervical Spine.
Mine started a year ago on and off. When it's on I had being living on 1 to 3 advil per day this really helped immediately

I have never suffered so much pain in my life, nearly 2 months now.. because I sit behind my PC for hours I decided to lift my screen and keyboard so that I have to stand, this is also gives me time to do stretches and these exercises in between... 4 days down the line, must admit, pain is getting better, much better.
