  • Today we take on part of the Rubicon Trail, one of the most well-known trails in California, to see if this vehicle is capable of handling 37" Tires. Along with my own, there were a few other Toyotas all on tires in the 37" - 40" range with IFS (one Toyota had a solid axle on 38s but still had the factory 8" diff).

    Quick question why can't you have the steering wheel at full lock with the locker engaged?

    • @SnowboundCustoms
      @SnowboundCustoms  2 года назад

      Thanks! It has more to do with the axle itself. The CV axle is at its weakest when it is turned. In this case the outer cage on it broke. Of course this combined with the lockers puts a lot of strain on the joint. Some aftermarket axles like RCVs or Lotus have a chromoly outer cage which makes it much stronger in these scenarios (I think they both have chromoly)

    Considered 37s on a 92runner 1UZ doing 32s as daily-driver However that needs some frame, steering and sump mods work all together needing engineers certificates in Australia. Yeah Naah and 98 petrol has doubled $$per litre so daily will be an overal $$$ mission. For the work I would be going crazy with adding a driveline for 40s madness then only able to race or something... it's clutch n winch time next for me, although ur rigs smicko n great vid too.

    You should look into the outboard shock relocation mod, you can fit longer travel shocks in the rear and I think it’ll give your rig more articulation. You already got giant tires on it, might as well give them some more function.

    • @SnowboundCustoms
      @SnowboundCustoms  Год назад +1

      @@SnowboundCustoms very cool, look into BTF fabrication's front long travel kit they have machined heavy duty CVs for more durability offroad.. You're custom fabbing your own Lower and upp control arms/spindle?? That's dope, i want to try my hand at that myself someday.

    • @SnowboundCustoms
      @SnowboundCustoms  Год назад +2

      @@jvogler_art4708 yes I am. I can send you a pic of it if you dm me on Instagram. I considered doing other LT kits on the market, but I was never really a fan of the front end being 9” wider than the rear. I always thought it made the truck look goofy and incomplete.
      In regards to the CV axles, I already have them custom made. I believe BTF uses OEM CV joints. My axles have outer OEM cv joints, but the inners are custom made with a chromoly cage. That’s the part that broke in this video and seems to be the most common breaking point so it should be significantly stronger

    What’s the engine you have?? Stock v6 still? Or did you drop in a V8?
    Iv got a 4.7 sequoia, that way when I lift it higher and bigger tires it’s still got enough torque to get me places and not have to engine swap. And having the heated leather seats and sunroof is pretty great also lol

    • @SnowboundCustoms
      @SnowboundCustoms  9 месяцев назад +1

      just the stock 3.4 v6 still. The engine doesn't matter much when in 4low. It will have more than enough torque. I never use more than half throttle. On the highway is a different story haha

    • @CherokeeChief.
      @CherokeeChief. 9 месяцев назад

      @@SnowboundCustoms Iv just found the traction control or ATRAC and locker work better when you’ve got higher torque but the low gear does make the biggest difference. I just love having that 4.7 because it still gets the same gas mileage as any of the 4.0 v6 s they have today in the 4 runners but has about 80+ torque and the same hp. Iv driven both and there’s no replacement for engine displacement in the v8

    So sick. What’s the minimum tire size you need/recommend to do the rubicon?

    • @SnowboundCustoms
      @SnowboundCustoms  2 года назад +2

      My main recommendation is lockers. We use a single locker everywhere and that’s the minimum. Two is pretty handy in some instances. Ideally 35s but I know someone did it on 33s. You’ll have more trouble with ground clearance with the smaller tires and get hung up more but still doable

    More than likely you over extended the CV and it probably broke because it was barely holding onto the cup.
    If your steering isn’t limited, you might want to limit it by a few degrees, and go back to OEM CV’s.
