Closest we came is 2 years ago when we escaped Hurricane Ian in Fort Lauderdale. We saw the preparations and felt the anticipation not knowing ourselves if our flight would be cancelled. We were lucky to fly out. Can’t imagine how much more real it is to be in one though, so happy to hear you guys and Honu are safe! Our hearts too go out to all those whose lives were devastated by Beryl! 💔
I rode out hurricane Ian cat 5 and right in the path of the eye wall. It parked over us in SW Florida here and this was my third. I’ve learned the eye wall is where the real danger to property. The wind was violent and hardly any boats survived. I’m happy for you all!
Great to see this - my boat is out there in Mt Hartman Bay! (I come into Secret Harbour when I come over from the UK). And what you say is right - the reef makes a big difference.
Happy you guys put safety first. A Caribbean hurricane is nothing to play with. Unpredictability is the word for these storms. Stay safe in your travels.
So weird watching this knowing what was coming. Praying you all were safe it’s like watching a disaster movie that you kind of know the ending to. So glad you were wise to take shelter away from the boat.
OMG guys you are an amazing team. I wish to be half of what you guys are when I start my adventure with my wife. Keep calme and sail on !!!!! You guys ROCK !!!!

Great reporting you 2 much appreciated , that's a nice looking Marina and a lot of beautiful looking Cats in there !😻😸 looks like everyone in that Bay was very fortunate in comparison to the other parts of the Island 🙏😺
Happy you’re safe! Grenada usually gets Major Hurricanes every 2-3 decades or last major Hurricane was 2004 since we are slightly out the Hurricane belt. I hope this doesn’t turn you away from the beauty of the island
Thank you. We a gutted by what happened. We feel like Grenada is our home and we're so sad for the families in Carriacou and the Grenadines. Fingers crosse with all the help and support they will be able to rebuild and get some normality and a felling of safety back.
i am so surprised to see all the dinghy's still on the davits with motors on. Wouldve taken that down myself and yeah, you need to turn all your power off! So glad you made it through ok. so true you cannot replace lives. Thanks for sharing your experience with all of us. Just one more thing, because i'm from the land of tornados - stay far away from windows during storms like that. Curtains weighted down, and like you said go into the bathroom!
Damn you we're lucky!! We got 280km/h wind, I lost my boat, sunk so quickly..3 other boats smashed into my boat, one actually climbed on top of my deck, snapping my mast, then 3 re boat hit me and ripped holes in the stern....and there went my everything 😪 glad you made it through safely... We sailed to Grenada in 2004 after Ivan. Total devastation and the first hurricane in 60 years. 20 years later, Beryl destroys this beautiful country again.

Man, you were lucky it's hard to believe that 25 miles away can be total destruction, You were so smart to listen to your gut. Anything could have happened in open water. I have been through a few hurricanes in Florida but for whatever reason Tampa doesn't get hit hard. Have you heard any word on Zatara? They were on the hard in Grenada.
Glad you guys made it out safe. Have you reached out to the different organizations to see what support they need? They could use help with transportation of goods for the locals and the less fortunate. Just thought.
Yes we are involved in a bunch of different ways to help out. This weekend we are helping with the RUclips-athon which so far has raised a ton of money. Stay tuned for more info on that.
And yes, great that you could get off the boat but yet be right there. And Yes, You were right in not bolting to Trinidad not fully prepared. You indeed could have lost your life. There was no time for errors. Boats can be replaced, but not your lives. When Hurricane Andrew hit us in Miami, we got off the boat. It was a total loss, ( full on cat 5+), we were not. We got another boat. Paying insurance all those years indeed did pay off. BTW, I like your boat. I taught sailing for a US Sailing school in San Francisco and off shore. We put those boat through some serious weather in the N Pacific. They held up to it. That N Pacific is rough!
Yes that was our thoughts too. We love our Honu but our safety is much more important that the boat. Such a scary situation. I hope we never have to go through a storm like this again (and we didn't even get the brunt of it) Our hearts go out to all the islands north of us. How terrifying that must have been for them and still is. Thanks for the the info. We have so much confidence in our boat after all the work we have done to him but it's always nice to hear that someone else has put them through their passes and come out on top. Cheers!

Just a little more to the south and it could have been a disaster there too. And good on you for helping there!
@@nurryskitchen4738. When I lost my voyaging home to Hurricane Andrew, Miami haven’t had a hurricane in -25 yrs! Only takes one. Grenada does get them.

Thank you, yeah there has been lots of talk this year about this coming hurricane season and they have been warning everyone. We felt pretty much ahead of the game this year, but you just never know.
I would suggest not tying dock lines made of rope directly to a cleat on a pier. The lines can get chaffed where they hang over the edge of the pier. That caused a lot of boats problems in our marina during tropical storms and cat 1 & 2 hurricanes. I made a loop of chain that passed thru the hole in the center of each dock cleat so that the chain rubbed on the edge of the pier, and not the dock line. I made an eye splice in the rope dock line with a metal thimble made tight inside the eye splice loop and the dock line was attached to the chain loop with a shackle. However, hurricane Katrina destroyed every single boat inside that marina a few years after I had sold my boat. The only boat still floating in the marina was a large paddlewheel casino boat. It had one of its dock lines break and it ended up sitting on top of a super yacht. The super yacht was crushed below the casino boat and could not be seen. This was in New Orleans. Glad you guys made it thru the storm safely.
@@sailinghonutime yes I read lower in your comments that someone else spotted that. I have seen several times in our marina after storms a sail has torn loose. I have even taken off my boom in a bad storm, but I noticed you have in-mast furling...

We had no time to get the dinghy down and to another place, the motor has a really good lock on it and it has corroded and is no longer removable without maybe grinding it off. With the limited time we had to prep we decided to leave it as it was, thankfully all worked out.
This was amazing coverage. Glad you all faired as well as you did. My heart goes out to all who were affected.

I would never have left the outboard on my dinghy.
We had no time to get the dinghy down and to another place, the motor has a really good lock on it and it has corroded and is no longer removable without maybe grinding it off. With the limited time we had to prep we decided to leave it as it was, thankfully all worked out.
I'm glad you are OK. I've been wondering how you faired.
Thank you. We are all safe and good. Just trying to figure out what's next. ❤️
If you could please, that would be most helpful🙂
I've sent an email off ans will keep you posted. I think there is a turn buckle under the drum of the furler but can't recall at the moment.
@sailinghonutime Hi Josh. I think the same. Probably a bottle screw under the furling foil. If you find out that would be great , thanks 😊
I don't think 57 is too old ya I'm still in great shape that's too god lol
The perfect time is when your ready, but staying in shape at every age makes all the difference.
Why not dive on the mooring balls to investigate their reliability?
We have done this a lot in various anchorages. It helps to see the condition but you still never really know how safe they are, just how they appear.
Much ado about nothing.
Thankfully, it wasn't too bad for us, just very stressful. Nearby 11 boats ended up on shore, and less than 30 miles away is total wipe out.
