Dude when I was a kid my dad used to take roofing tar and seal off the damaged spots on a tree. You can also stuff the cavity and then put the roofing tar over the top to keep water from pulling up in there. Do that bit of extra effort and you'll be surprised what your tree can recover from
@@MTNmyMAGnot concrete. The tree will there ever be able to fill in and heal itself. Fill in with sawdust and water or sawdust and a minimal tacky glue which will break down eventually. Trees can really fill in if you give them protection and time.

Just a suggestion, I live in South Florida and when a big oak tree went down and split like yours I've seen people put some type of pliable concrete I don't know what it was they put it in the cavity of the tree and it's been 5 years now and the tree is still living just a suggestion you may want to look into

Praise the Lord for He's good, hallelujah! I will never tease you again for overdoing and overbuilding everything! I am astonished how little water you got on your new property, was sure you'd need a boat to get there. Sad for the oak, but considering all the circumstances..
I was hoping and praying you would be safe. As for your oaks are concerned something that has worked for us (albeit on smaller trees) is pruning spray but due to the size of yours maybe try some sort of epoxy to seal the “wounds” to prevent rot and hopefully save the rest of your beautiful trees. Glad your are safe and have minimal damage of what could have been.
3 Hurricanes in 12 months that's hard to swallow but everyone is safe that's the #1 thing. About the oak tree a few days of dry and I believe you can coat the opening with some layers of water proof liquid and after a few dry coatings fill the cavity with wax so there's no standing water, I have some friends in blountstown been reaching out to them and getting no response probably going to take a trip here soon.

My wife is down there working , my oldest brother is a Insurance Adjuster & he job is down there looking at people house to see how much damage is done to there homes & i should be down there too but i got Second degree sunburn right now again that's is not doing well at all & i had to stay home because I can't drive barefooted 👣 because i got Blisters all over my feet 🦶 & my feet 🦶 are still extremely extremely RED & it still hurts to push down the pedal but i got all 5 of my Truck 🚛 down there now with out me . I had this burn since Labor day weekend holiday from doing a 37 mile kayak camping 🏕 trip with my whole entire family . The sad part about it is that my wife put sunscreen & sunblock all over my body and still got burned . But it hurts me to know that i can't bless my heart to help out in a time of need . You take care buddy & again i am so glad that you & your whole entire family are safe from this storm man .
Ouch! Sunburn is very painful. Burns to the tops of feet are the worst and can be debilitating until it heals. the best thing you can do for them, is take care of you and get better. Your people completely understand, plus you can lend great support to them from where you are! Thank you for how much you are already doing to help!

I tried to take care of my feet 🦶 before they got burned . My wife put on me all over my body sunblock & sunscreen & I still got burned . My foot outgrow shoes , socks , & boots & the only footwear that will barely fit me is flip flops 🩴 which barely & I mean barely fit me because my toes are wider than the flip flops 🩴 straps & we want kayak camping 🏕 for Labor day weekend holiday . I hope & pray 🙏 that you & your family are doing ok from this storm man . I am praying 🙏 for everyone in Florida right now .

There is no hurricane that could touch that shelter. I remember how rock solid that was built. If the storm couldn't be avoided, at least is was a fast mover. That was the big factor. Had it been moving at say 5 mph, there would be much more damage. God bless ya'll.
I was so scared for you guys. I, too, thought your buildings and home were toast. I also appreciate the update on your parents as I was so concerned about them. A while back, we had a big gust of wind that took our 24-foot-long carport and blew it a couple of hundred feet into a ball. luckily, we got that cut up and hauled away. That wasn't even a storm, just a very strong wind gust. I don't think we'd have come out as luckily as you did had it hit us here in Texas.

Hey, One issue is the doors. You need to put barriers in far enough in front of the doors to protect against debris being thrown up against the doors and you can't get out. Usually they do like a 30-inch poured concrete reinforced wall in front of the door. It like people get whole house generators and don't put them in a vent reforced house. Seen those get trashed by rolling pickup in high winds.
Oh My Days that sideways driving rain and wind was terrible, so thankful y'all are in as good a shape as you are! As many have mentioned, there's topical products to seal that oak up and it will be OK

Let a neighbor or a friend know to check on you after just in case large debris or other objects trap you inside or make it difficult to get out of your shelter.
How is it anchored to the ground? You should absolutely have 2-way radio gear / flashlights and lithium iron phosphate batteries dedicated to the radio.

Quick thought from a shelter I installed radio equipment in… Add inexpensive exterior mounted colored strobe light modules (approx $10-15@) that operate on 12vdc. They also provided an exterior rated fire horn devices. Add an internal “HUB-2 Station” (Amseco locking hold up station) OR a Fire Alarm Pull Station customized with different colors and lettering. The shelter had blue exterior strobe lights and a blue colored pull station inside. If the shelter inhabitants are in need of special assistance or cannot be located or has tipped over, etc… They can pull the station, activating the strobes and sounder outside. This can assist rescuers or ANYONE walking in the area. (Powered by separate 12v 7ah standby AGM battery mounted in an internal enclosure.
Wowser... Andrew and Tiff... that was a heck of a storm!!! I was really worried that you guys were going to get so much more damage, but I also knew that Andrew wayyyyy overbuilt everything!!! I had faith in that storm shelter as well. That build series is definitely one to watch! Sad to see that oak got damaged, but looks like overall it's good news. Maybe you can put some kind of protective cover on the oak to keep it from filling up with water. Or paint some kind of sealant over the wound.

This is going to sound like hocus pocus but look into air layering your oak before you decide to cut it down. You van save that exact tree to replant in its place. No its not the same as having the 100+ year old tree but its your tree when you replant it.

I always asked about the Oak after each storm, so I was very sad to see the 'icon' damaged so badly. Glad everything else held up so well, says a lot about your builds! I was wondering how the river property would fare too. Relieved it was high & dry after all that rain. AND... happy your parents are safe.
Now here's a man who knows the wisdom of building with wood because wood is resilient whereas concrete will crack shatter crumble when it's breaking point is reached.
Don't give up on that tree! I guarantee that "you" can figure out a way to try and save it. Drill holes at the bottom or something etc etc. You'll figure out something, you usually do!

So glad you are safe and minor damage. Our house in Valdosta got hit with a giant pine right down the middle. My kids and wife were in the hall and I was looking out the window from the master bedroom when it got really bad And the tree came down. Came through the house and the roof and hit me and knocked me on the floor and I’m all black and blue. I Spent the next morning in the hospital. Kids and wife are all safe. But if our walls hadn’t stopped the fall of the tree from coming all the way down it would have crushed some of my family. I will NEVER stay in a house again through a named storm. If I and my family don’t have a legit storm shelter like you to go to, then we will just leave before the storm hits.
I just got in from pushing trees and opening up roads and driveways. So glad to see you both ok. We were hit hard in Upstate SC also. Going to be weeks for some to get power back. Asheville in NC is in a mess also. I-40 going over the mountain will take a long time to open. Horrible storm. Praying for all. Awesome job preparing buddy.

A couple of months ago, my 23 year old white truck started having some issues and wasn't up to the take of hauling all my equipment.
Dont give up on the oak. There are fillers which you may be able to use and save it.

The AC is removable from the inside and serves as a secondary escape hatch. I designed that into it.

Wowser... Andrew and Tiff... that was a heck of a storm!!! I was really worried that you guys were going to get so much more damage, but I also knew that Andrew wayyyyy overbuilt everything!!! I had faith in that storm shelter as well. That build series is definitely one to watch! Hate to see that the one major loss was that beautiful oak, but I'm thinking that you may be able to salvage some of it. Thanks for the update, stay safe and dry guys!!! 🎉❤

Regarding the big oak....To get the best advice how about contacting someone at the University of Florida or your local extension office?
Sad to see that oak got damaged, but looks like overall it's good news. Maybe you can put some kind of protective cover on the oak to keep it from filling up with water. Or paint some kind of sealant over the wound.

Can a tree elastomer/sealant be painted on to the damaged part of the oak to save what is left? Such a shame to see a mature oak like that go. 😥

The shelter is a beast. Can you use spray foam to fill the oak void the seal the opening with pruning tar or something for the oak? Like you said those are lifetime trees. Just a thought. Glad yall came through relatively good considering that hurricane! Hope insurance takes care of your folks.

So glad to see you fared so well. Just an idea for your Oak Tree. What about filling the cavity with concrete, bondo or something like that. There has to be something that can be used to fill that hole and that the tree might be able to heal over. Like I said, just an idea.

This is going to sound like hocus pocus but look into air layering your oak before you decide to cut it down. You van save that exact tree to replant in its place. No its not the same as having the 100+ year old tree but its your tree when you replant it.
I was worried about you guys and I'm so happy to see you ok. Patch that old oak if you can. It's a gonner but maybe you can prolong it's demise.

Now here's a man who knows the wisdom of building with wood because wood is resilient whereas concrete will crack shatter crumble when it's breaking point is reached.
Wood takes shock like no other.
Don't give up on that tree! I guarantee that "you" can figure out a way to try and save it. Drill holes at the bottom or something etc etc. You'll figure out something, you usually do!

WOW that was an awesome video! Such preparedness and your overbuilding are totally impressive👍 I can't even imagine what the chickens thought LOL. So glad the new property survived well also. Hope the insurance comes though for your folks' issues. It seems that the eastern outlying bands caused more damage than the eye of the storm. I'm so happy for you both, but still saying prayers for all affected and especially the loss of loved ones across the affected states. You kids are definitely blessed!

So glad you are safe and minor damage. Our house in Valdosta got hit with a giant pine right down the middle. My kids and wife were in the hall and I was looking out the window from the master bedroom when it got really bad And the tree came down. Came through the house and the roof and hit me and knocked me on the floor and I’m all black and blue. I Spent the next morning in the hospital. Kids and wife are all safe. But if our walls hadn’t stopped the fall of the tree from coming all the way down it would have crushed some of my family. I will NEVER stay in a house again through a named storm. If I and my family don’t have a legit storm shelter like you to go to, then we will just leave before the storm hits.

I just got in from pushing trees and opening up roads and driveways. So glad to see you both ok. We were hit hard in Upstate SC also. Going to be weeks for some to get power back. Asheville in NC is in a mess also. I-40 going over the mountain will take a long time to open. Horrible storm. Praying for all.
