"And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone"
The stone is the bad blood built up over the years that saps you of your humanity, rots your heart and eventually drags you down. This is easily my favorite song off the album. That repetitive echo of the word 'Stone'... starts off as a word then slowly becomes a plaintive wail. A sad lonely voice in the darkness crying out for help. It is basically the whole song in a nutshell. This is the brilliance of Roger Waters' writing. Gilmour and Wright's stellar musicianship notwithstanding, it is the eerie hypnotic sonic touches such as these, that I can almost guarantee you stemmed from Waters' brilliant if mildly demented psyche, that adds that certain dimension to the music that causes it to bypass the cerebral cortex altogether and go right to the soul. Pink Floyd were truly a collaboration of music imagination and flat out genius, the likes of which we may never see again.

One thing that seems pretty common in Pink Floyd: Post-Dark Side lyrics were very direct. Poetic, beautifully crafted by Roger Waters, but very little abstraction. One major example is from the song Pigs (Three Different Ones.) Reactors perk right up when Roger says “Hey you, Whitehouse…” The lyrics after that get…strange. I will not give away too much but you should know who Mary Whitehouse was. A miserable censor who “tried to keep their feelings off the street.” She was a “sex educator” who tried to get many shows and music out of the hands of Great Britain’s citizens. People who think about the White House in D.C. hear weird lyrics that sometimes fit, sometimes not. The lyrics get very abstract. When you know who Mary Whitehouse was the lyrics become hilariously bawdy and as subtle as a punch to the face.
(People say Animals is the Pink Floyd “saddest album.” This is the dumbest hot take I have ever read. The other of the big 4 albums are waaaay sadder. Animals is a cartoon rock opera (per Waters and Gilmour at various times.) I think the album has some great dark humor.)

Some of Gilmour's grittiest guitar work here. The acoustic guitar intro (and throughout) is tuned to drop-D, giving it a darker, more ominous vibe, yet still beautiful to the ear. And let's not overlook Gilmour's powerful singing...lots of pathos in that voice.

    Pink Anderson
    Floyd Council
Two great Blues musicians of which
    Pink Floyd derived its name.
I have always lived somewhere rural on a ranch. I first heard Pink Floyd in 1968 while my brothers and I were loading, hauling, and stacking hay. In the nearby small town in northern Arizona the AM station DJ actually played Interstellar Overdrive.(off Piper at the Gates of Dawn) I was immediately hooked.
At first opportunity I purchased the 8-track.
Since then I accumulate everything they ever recorded on vinyl. The routine was always the same Two LPS one eight track.
So I have a set of unopened P.F. LPS.
( that should make some happy at my demise)lol
There are a couple rare, where I could only afford one. "I've never heard them."
We went to the Animals, Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, and Momentary Lapse of Reason concerts. The last one we attended the Encore concert the following night as well.
If you researched then you're aware Animals is about George Orwell's Animal Farm.
Don't really have a favorite PF song. Although Animals Wishyou Were Here and Metal get played the most.
I'm content with listening to Adam Hart Mother Suite or Umaguma.
    Saucer full of secrets
    Interstellar Overdrive
Set the controls for the heart of the Sun.

We reached the top of the mountain right here boys. Time to break for camp. 🏕 When you listen to the other big songs on this LP, find the new 2018 remix versions bcuz you will be able to hear alot more of those sweet keyboards that Rick laid down on Sheep and Pigs (3 Diff Ones).
This was always my favorite Gilmour playing of all time. That resonance on the strings that goes from one channel to the other is the God tone I'm sure of it! 👌 There's some great bootleg recordings of that '77 tour that you can easily find on YT. Probably MSG July 2nd or the Oakland or early Paris shows are worth a listen. Some loud audiences, but the music shines thru. Also they did officially release the early live versions from' 74 with different lyrics on the WYWH Immersion set. Dogs was "You Gotta Be Crazy" and Sheep was "Raving and Drooling".

@@retroreactions.... No problem. I envy you being able to listen to it all for the first time! 😉 👌 Funny fact, the songs on Animals were so long that on the cassette version, they had to fade out one of the songs (P3DO's) and fade it back in on side 2! Another GREAT little gem is that the 8-track tape version had a longer version of the opening and closing track Pigs On The Wing with their extra touring guitarist Snowy White who laid down a sweet little solo to bridge both halves of pt1 and pt2. Something about the limitations of the 8-track technology prevented having such short songs. This version was released officially on a compilation CD of Snowy White's which I'm sure is easily found on YT. Amazing Floyd still haven't released this version, even on the new remixed CD! But I do prefer the original mix of Pigs On The Wing because there was more echo on Roger's vocals, but for the rest of the album the 2018 remix is mostly better for the boosted instrumentation alone.

Where I grew up there was a greyhound race track. The first part of the lyrics are more staid and compact, even restrictive. Then the music and lyrics open up and flow like the dogs chasing the stuffed bunny around the track. The best musical pay-off in all of Rock happens as the dog, as portrayed by Gilmour and his guitar, wails at the sunset of his own existence (maybe today?) I have listened to this song at least 70-80 times in the past week as I deconstruct and learn to sing it.

This song was actually written in '73 when they did a tour for nearly 1.5 yrs working out 3 compositions that they wanted to truly be reflective of their growth as musicians. Not a single band member thinks Dark Side of the Moon is a reflection of their best work, feeling it was incomplete, hurried, and unpolished. This was the inspiration for these 3 compositions which were Dogs, Sheep, and Shine on You Crazy Diamond. They were to be the follow-up album from Darkside, but epic meaningful events in their life caused that historic alteration in which Dogs and Sheep were pushed to the next album, and lots of the motivating inspirational material that made up Pigs composition was first muddled within the Wish You Were Here album but found to be not the right context in the end, and Have a Cigar along with Welcome to the Machine were penned instead. But if you listen to those two songs just before listening to Pigs(three different ones), you will undoubtedly catch the likeness and similarities. It is almost unimaginable to think of how those shows were, with Darkside of the Moon tracks bookending and filling the gaps between Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Dogs & Sheep.

@@retroreactions.... "In Concert" is a very special episode of WKRP in Cincinnati. The plot is centered around the deadly gate-rushing incident that occurred in Cincinnati prior to the December 3, 1979, performance by The Who at Riverfront Coliseum, eleven weeks before the episode aired. Attendees arrived as much as six hours before the start of the concert to attempt to garner the best available seats, and a crowd had gathered by 3:00 p.m. An hour before the start of the concert, "thousands were tightly packed around the entrance doors", and by 7:20 p.m.the crowd consisted of 8,000 people. Some members of the crowd rushed the gates on the plaza level on the west side of the Coliseum, crushing those at the front. The incident resulted in the death of 11 individuals by compressive asphyxia and injuries to 23. Hugh Wilson, the show's producer, said he initially rejected the idea for the episode, but later accepted when writers told him that the incident happened in Cincinnati, in which the show is based, and involved rock and roll, the show's primary subject. The episode would focus on the fact that few cities in the United States addressed the issue of festival and unreserved seating after the incident.

Yup, that went down well, I enjoyed the music and company very much. Even though I have sat through this wonderful piece of art many times, it was great to watch someone who appreciates music experience it for the first time. Thankyou for praising the "middle section", Richard Wright is on brilliant form here, I can't help but follow his cue, like it were a shooting star in a vast void, visiting insignificant moments from time as well as odd dogs wandering in the night, as they savage from turned over dustbins in dark alley ways, but find nothing. Then I am dragged out expertly by the rest of the piece. The fact that the character in this story is referred to as 'you', in my case, that means 'me', so the parable can sometimes lead to the feeling of a tragedy and even sympathy. Ha! Thankyou for your time, it is the greatest gift a mortal can offer.

Layer upon layer, upon layer, upon layer, upon layer, is Pink Floyds music.
Actually, there was very little bliss between band members by this time, the "Animals" Album. The friction between Waters and Gilmour had become almost untenable by this time, so much so that Waters wrote the Animals albums on his own.
Oh, the other guys got credit for their own individual contributions. Waters didn't write all the parts himself, but it wasn't like other albums where they would ALL write, and record their parts together, in the studio. Waters virtually came to the band and said,... I'm paraphrasing here,... 'I wrote our new album'.
The Animals album is considered by some, as the beginning of the end of Pink Floyd and Roger Waters.
The power struggle between Gilmour and Waters is legendary, it's listed as the longest Rock & Roll feud in history, there have been many writings on it over the years. Waters quit the band in 1985 assuming, incorrectly, that Pink Floyd was finished, and he was quoted, att saying, Pink Floyd is a "spent force creatively".
Nevertheless Gilmour, Wright and Mason continued on as Pink Floyd, selling out 90,00+ seat venues all over the world for over two decades more, after Waters left. Roger Waters sued to stop them from using the Pink Floyd name, he lost.
In 2005 Pink Floyd and reunited for a few songs at Live 8, it was the first time in 20 years since they played together, it was emotional for the fans. Not so much for Gilmour, and they never played together again.
The video of The "Reunion at Live 8 is on RUclips, I think they perform 3 songs, including Comfortably Numb.

Is good. To get the original experience, you need to meditate on the various pictures included on and inside the album, noting the hidden pictures of the dog, etc., preferably in a non-quotidian state of mind, not of the alcohol type, as that only dulls the senses. A strong espresso con leche, pour example. As good as is dogs, pigs is pretty good too, which makes me sound like a hick saying so. Sheep, however, for me at least, is the real piece de resistance, tour de force, magnum opus, at least of the album. "Ummagumma", one of the older ones, is, for me, the most experimental and profound of their albums. "Several Species". "Narrow Way". "Sisyphus". We earlybirds thought they had gone commercial with Dark Side, while digging nonetheless, while realizing too, that they had been corralled and shrunken. But they showed the world that they could also do popular music, and went on to create the most popular of all.

Historical background of the album (Animals):
In 1976, the United Kingdom was swimming in troubled waters. Mired in an unprecedented economic crisis, Anglo-Saxon pride is beaten by a rescue of the F.M.I. Musically too the country is lagging behind, having succumbed to the disco wave and it is ABBA a Swedish group that outrageously dominates the podium of the charts. But that is nothing compared to the tornado that is about to sweep over the British establishment. The punk movement, this new protest movement from the United States, will permanently shock a part of British society by rebelling against the archaic values that rule it. Titles like: (Anarchy in the U.K) sum up all punk thought, they all cultivate, besides this hatred of the system, that of their elders (rock bands) whom they consider finished and good to throw away. With Pink Floyd at the head of the gondola, which sabotaged the true values of rock and its three chords by making it too intellectual and sophisticated. To the point of finding Johnny Rotten (Sex Pistols) walking down Carnaby Street flanked by an "I hate Pink Floyd" t-shirt. Wounded in his increasingly voluminous pride, Roger Waters decides to deliver his point of view (philosophical anyway) on the new world order. The Animals album will be a social review inspired by a work published in 1945, The Animal Farm by George Orwell (also author of 1984). The In The Flesh tour that followed in 1977 was also famous for the Montreal concert where Waters spit in the face of a spectator, which led him to want to erect a wall between the stage and the audience: the birth of The Wall album.

This is another deep concept album (Like DSOM) that should be listened to as a whole composition...easily Roger Waters at his most bitter and acerbic, with his scathing commentary on life in Britain in the mid '70s. Dogs are the business that prey on the population (Sheep) and are, in turn, both are screwed around by the political class (Pigs). When you get to these two tracks, you will better understand the dynamic that Roger was going for. Ironically, all three tracks are bookended by two parts (Pigs On The Wing I and II), which are diametrically opposed to the darkness in between, beginning and ending the whole thing on an upbeat note.

As I understand it, This album is where the creative differences between Gilmour and Waters really started getting problematic. This is really Waters’ album when it comes to concept and direction. Then The Wall marked the end of their collaboration. Some fans take sides. I try not too…..although I will say I adore Gilmour’s guitar playing, and I think Waters is a very angry and unhappy soul. Such a presence I would think would be difficult to work with intimately rear after year, no matter how brilliantly creative he might be. I did love some of Waters solo work…..Radio Kaos. It is also interesting to note that, now that Gilmour controls the PF catalogue, I believe Animals is the only album of the major run that has not been remastered. Others no doubt know more about Floyd minutiae than I…..

Roger Waters's world-view may be cynical and dour, but he's not wrong... And I would add, for those who claim their music is depressing, listen closer. There was nearly always at least one ray of hope infused into his lyrics. You may have to wait until the very end of the album, but it's there. He was always trying to impress on the listener that "this may be how the world works, but it doesn't HAVE to be."
