Brandon, I've seen you shaken with several other masterpieces you'd reacted to previously, but I'd never seen you as much shaken as you were this time. Of course, that was predictable: "The Dark Side of the Moon" hits anyone like a runaway bulldozer on first listen. Been there, done that --- only, in my case it was 50 years ago, but I still remember it. And it was all so fresh, so new, so original, so unique... Take any of the other great prog rock bands --- Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Moody Blues, Focus, you name it. They're all different, but their sound still has something in common, even if it's hard to define. But Pink Floyd sets itself apart, and within their work, "The Dark Side" is unique even for them and defies any classification. It's a sensory overload that needs time to digest and assimilate. As I told you before, that took me MONTHS of repeated listens!
This time the evil B-movie mad scientist in me started laughing hysterically and sadistically when the long instrumental section of "Money" began... I knew you had listened to "Money" before, but only superficially, and I knew you weren't ready for what they do in that part --- nobody is prepared for that! Again, I knew that "Us and Them" becomes a different song when heard in context, I also knew you were going on a ride through other galaxies with "Any Colour You Like" (probably the track that best showcases how Rick Wright and David Gilmour were a match made in the heavens), and I knew you'd feel disturbed with "Brain Damage". As for Beatles influence, maybe, but then we have to give a suspicious side look to Alan Parsons, who had worked on "Abbey Road" (my favorite Beatles album) as an "assistant" engineer who stole the scene.
You often hear that "The Dark Side of the Moon" is a life-changing album. Now you know that this is not an exaggeration!

    • @retroreactions....

So I guess I did good in the amount I caught on first listen.... :) And you are very perceptive on what you saw in me! Pretty spot on with everything. I know The Wall is different, but with 26 songs, I know it will be an unbelievable journey in itself! Thanks my friend..

    • @goytabr
      @goytabr Год назад +1

@@retroreactions...., and this was a good precedent. Be prepared because that era is full of albums that need to be listened whole. For example, when you get to Mike Oldfield, all his first albums ("Tubular Bells", "Hergest Ridge", "Ommadawn", and "Incantations") had no track division, just whole undivided sides, and by their own nature and style they contain such different passages in succession that you can't just cut them arbitrarily. His late masterpiece "Amarok" (a record that many people hate on first listen, others find just okay, but after several listens it almost invariably ends up becoming most fans' favorite Oldfield album --- me included), was released in 1990, already in the CD era, and it has ONE single 60-minute track with no division at all.
(There is a media player program for Linux called the Amarok Player that was born exactly out of a programmer fan of the record who wanted a media player that could accept scripts to arbitrarily divide long tracks into many. No such software existed, so he wrote it.)
Then there are Camel's masterpiece, "The Snow Goose", which must also be listened whole, and The Who's legendary rock opera "Tommy", whose tracks lose meaning if not played in sequence. And you CAN listen to the separate tracks of Jean-Michel Jarre's great early albums (before he became cheesy and vulgar) --- "Oxygène", "Equinoxe", "Magnetic Fields" (probably the best record to listen with headphones ever recorded!) --- but they sound much better in the proper sequence.
In addition, there are also many whole-side tracks like "Echoes" by other groups, such as Focus' magnificent "Hamburger Concerto" (it's highly unfair that they're remembered today only for the crazy yodelling in "Hocus Pocus", those flying Dutchmen were AWESOME!), ELP's legendary "Karn Evil 9" (on vinyl, the track actually ended side 1 of "Brain Salad Surgery" and then continued as the entire side 2), and Mike Oldfield's "Crises" (from the homonymous album, whose side 2 is divided into several pop songs, but side 1 is just one long instrumental suite that contains some of the best synth work I've ever heard).

    While reflecting listening to
Us and Them, I was thinking how much my grandmother loved the song. And she was born in Sweden in the 1800s.
My father liked Pink Floyd. And I remember he couldn't get enough of Rodger Waters on an island. He was nearing 100 when he died 15 years ago.
So when they talk of Pink Floyd being multi-generational or timeless. There's an example going back over 130 years.
It would seem good music and musicians are indeed timeless.

Great reaction man. This is the album that first introduced me to David Gilmour and Pink Floyd in 1973, I was 17 years old. I was in a Rock band in those days playing locally, and David Gilmour made a huge impact on me and my playing.
Imagine a young aspiring guitar player at 17 years hearing, the "Dark Side of the Moon" album for the first time?!?! Saying it was a life altering experience sounds a bit dramatic, but it was for a young Rock Guitarist in 1973!
Today I'm 66 years old and I still play my Stratocaster, (among other guitars), every day through my Marshall amps. One day I'd love to get a small 20-watt Hiwatt amp, the amp brand that David Gilmour used/uses, although he used two Hiwatt DR103 amps,100 watt each!
Interestingly, Pink Floyd performs the whole "Dark Side of the Moon" album, from beginning to end, in order, at their 1994 Pulse Concert at Earls Court London. What a performance it is, seeing them play this iconic album live is just incredible!

Another great and thoughtful reaction. Well done with spotting The Beatles influence. The line ".. and if there is no room upon the hill" is homage to "Fool on the Hill" from the iconic Sergeant Peppers album from 5 years earlier, and which was being recorded at Abbey Road at the same time as PF were recording their Piper at the Gates of Dawn album in the adjacent studio. I think David Gilmour sneaked in and watched the Beatles recording "Lovely Rita" and he has always held them up as the Gold Standard.

Great reaction there, you've been on what will be the first of many a visit to the Dark Side...only not the space movie one😊. The Pulse version is a personal favourite with (then) cutting edge tech and an insane lightshow. The 70's audio only versions available are incredible too bearing in mind it was all getting on for 50 years ago, 70's sound kit and recording. Pulse is quite 'clean' but the 70's versions have a bit of a raw edge. Either way, you're listening to a faithful-as-possible live recreation of a whole album, which is simply wonderful and top notch musicianship.

"There is no Dark Side of the Moon really.
Matter of fact it's all dark"
The way they use these detached seemingly dissonant voices deep in the background to round out the album lyrically, philosophically, and one could argue, musically, is sheer genius. It's akin to some separate subliminal track going on in your head that helps you interpret the material on a subconscious almost visceral level. Not to mention adding an almost ghostly atmospheric aspect - perfect for sending the imagination off in all directions with or without your consent depending on your sobriety. 😏
Pure artistic genius. They'll never be another.
"I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us...very hard to explain why you're mad, even if you're not mad..." - "Speak to Me"

Actually "back in the day" the vinyl album sleeve usually had the lyrics written out and DSOTM had the lyrics 😉
I think the biggest difference is that with vinyl you have to stop after The Great Gig to flip the disc over.
This is actually a moment... after Great Gig alot of people would have benefited from a short stop.
    Fun Fact.
The original recorded voice used right at the end. "there is no dark side of the Moon really, matter of fact its all dark" actually went on to say ".... the only thing that makes it light is the sun" but this was seen as a bit too upbeat and so was chopped off. I love the fact its missing but that I know whats been chopped off. There's a RUclips copy kicking around with that bit added back on😉

If you're into "audio visual synchronicity" Pink Floyd works well. This album is good with horror stories, I've even seen it synchronised with someone playing the video game 'Silent Hill 3'. The lyrics would explain along with a creepy atmosphere, but a bit of lively comedy in 'Money' (broken escalator = "if you ask for a rise they're giving none away"). It reached an exciting "boss fight" climax at the end of the album then it would start all over again as the next chapter began.

I'm soooooo glad you took this one on in the proper way - front to back - to tie all the pieces together as they were intended to be. Bravo. You are beginning to understand the genius that was PF - nothing is in place or left out unless it was intended to be that way. No band has/does/will so perfectly express the entire range of human emotions - love, hate, fear, joy, despair, anxiety, avarice, greed, and many more - all woven into sonic wonderment. Absolutely the finest reaction and analysis yet for this incredible. Thank you for giving a shit about things that went before. I don't think I've ever heard a band transition like them. Speaking of bands of 60's, 70's and 80's. For your own pleasure, check out their album "obscured by clouds"
I would say it's their "Instrumental" album over their lyrical albums. Glad to see a young man who seems to appreciate the music I grew up with as it was being made. Dark Side was actually my 1st concert
I remember it like it was yesterday. Have replaced that album 3 times, and still listen to it weekly ! As I've said earlier a lot of the songs was Roger missing Sid as a band member both were founding members and Sid actuallydid most of the writing if I remember correctly up to his departure. (Due to Sid's mental break) and even into the next album (Wish You Were Hear) went to that concert also. Anyway totally enjoy your channel so far and appreciate the way you break down the songs. Now that the livestock is fed, quick comment then on with the show. The album was only number one for a week.
But it remained in the top 200 for 15 years.
I'll soon check your history. But if you haven't done animals or wish you were here I'd take my pic between the two.
And don't forget those songs from their roots I mentioned previously.
Or whatever you feel. It's your experience.
I see you're wearing headphones that will keep you from getting bitched at.lol
I'm sure most of us listened at least the first time on headphones. Most early stereos couldn't do justice. In the '60s early '70s mine was a '50s heath kit with two tube amplifiers.
About the only time using headphones now is when I'm flying the plane. And I'm already wearing them for communication.
But that brings me to my next comment. I do hope you have a subwoofer creating that body resonance as well.
I paid weight penalty and put a 15 inch sub with a thousand watt amp in the plane.
But the biggest thrill, and it's like hearing much of the old songs for the first time, is listening to the surround in the den and entertainment rooms. I find it even better than headphones. And with Floyd you have sounds coming at you from every direction.
    ✌️

Hi, yes you will see that I have reacted to most of Animals and Wish You Were Here...hope you get to catch them! Yes, I recently switched from my earbuds to high bass studio headphones..a little too much bass but getting used to it...I would love to hear a full surround mix loud in a room!!

This format is well suited to experience those particularly significant concept albums that are more than the sum of their hits. Like, this album, and "The Wall"... And works from other bands, too, that need to be heard all in one go... Like "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" by Genesis, or "Tommy" by The Who. But I would resist the temptation to extend this honor too widely. You might end up wanting to experience all the albums like this, which might be a mistake given that life is just too short to waste time with decades of album-fillers. Yeah, I would use this new format sparingly. Besides, most really good songs will shime even more if removed from their duller surroundings. ;-]
Anyway, enough unsolicited opinions from me... Feel free to disregard and just chalk it up to wanting to feed the algorithm! lol
But, that doesn't mean you can't keep the "no pausing" thing going... pretty sure no one will object to that... except maybe YT. ;-]

Good solid advice Robert. Plus I'm hoping my channel will have a nice long life so can't do too many full albums at once haha.. or maybe save some of them for Patreon! Just don't know how safe no pausing/talking is, legally for copyright reasons....fair use videos are supposed to make the original music very transformed! Maybe I'll start creating parody songs like Weird Al does!! Imagine "Comfortably Glum", The Great Pig in the Sky", "Shine on you Neil Diamond", "Hippos", or maybe "Another Tick in the Wall"!!

      @@retroreactions.... lol, oh please don't!
There are channels that do not pause, ever. One of the better ones, featuring 2 college students, Andy & Alex, when they do get the occasional strike on YT, they put it on Patreon but without the paywall. They also do exclusive album listens for Patreon users. A very lively community. They've been at it for a few years...
Anyway, glad you're enjoying the music, Bro!

I love doing cover songs, but would never attempt a PF for obvious reasons....Oh I love A & A....great reactors, very funny guys. I envy the fact that they are so natural on cam and don't have to do editing of their dialogue...that's the only bad and time consuming part for me as a reactor. Of course they've been at it for years like you said and I'm just 2.5 months in....thanks again

@@retroreactions.... Andy was one of my first regular reactors. You can find some of my long rambling posts on some of his earliest reactions when he was just discovering Floyd... just him in his little dorm room. Sweet kid back then. But success has gone waaay to his head. 😉
Really like Alex too. He's a natural. Great partnership.

Yes, I've seen some of his old Floyd videos... they are fun, and are killing it on Patreon!

When are you going to admit they’re the greatest. If you get round to David Bowie start with space oddity album then chronologically through to scary monsters.
I think he’s going to surprise you as much as the Floyd, maybe more, due to his influence for depeche mode. Take care my friend.

After 36 years of Deep Devotion to Depeche, don't think any band will ever knock them off that top spot! Yes Bowie on my list, should try to get to him soon, know very few of his....Love China Girl, Let's Dance of course....see ya!
