Coincidence or not, if you have it synced correctly, the ENTIRE Great Gig In The Sky track (IMO) easily provides the most compelling "evidence" for the argument that it was done on purpose. Random isolated lyrics and sounds here and there are one thing... but that entire song is spot on with the tornado scene. For me, the next most compelling coincidence is the transition into the very next track, Money. In the movie, as Dorothy exits her house into Munchkinland, the second she opens the door the cash register sounds and Money begins... this is also the point in the movie when original theater patrons viewed film in color for the very first time. On the vinyl copy of DSOTM, Great Gig closes Side 1, and Money begins Side 2. So the first half of the album is exactly the same time length as the initial black & white portion of the film. As soon as Dorothy opens the door, we get COLOR and the second side of the album resumes.... looking at the DSOTM album cover; a single beam of white light against a black background passes through the prism and becomes the color spectrum. If you can't do the math from here... 🤷‍♂️ sorry.

  • @cdolan13
    @cdolan13 Год назад +18

For me, Pink Floyd has always been a band that embraced the 'visualization of music', if you will. For instance, when they first started out with Syd Barrett they would show color slides of his artwork through the band and onto the wall behind them, which would bathe the band in varieties of colors during the show, which, as Syd took more drugs had the slides intentionally melted as they were shown to create a color-morphing effect. And now, we all know their concert shows with the round screen behind them are legendary. Not to mention when Dark Side of the Moon came out you couldn't be in a room with at least one person who hadn't taken a psychedelic drug while listening to the album, touting the fact they saw the most intense colors in their heads (experience descriptions varied).
As @Modmary so succinctly stated in her comment below, their music can pair well with any movie.
That being said, I am sure if you played any symphony from a classic composer that you could find where the music works well with any music, as well. After all, aren't music scores the classical music of our day?
I, for one, don't care to mix mediums when listening to the music created by my favorite band. Playing the music while trying to find coincidences in a movie simply lessens the emotions the music creates when listening by itself.
Bottom line, I am not one who has embraced The Dark Side Of The Rainbow conspiracy theory. Could they have done it on purpose? Sure, anything is possible. But, as you stated why wouldn't they admit to it? Unless they wanted it to be their own little inside joke?
We'll never know...but what we do know is we do have one of the greatest albums ever recorded.

This works with ANY album ANY film & ANY bong.
Look up the phrase, "Confirmation Bias".
Same reason fans of Nostradamus can read his vague quatrains and make connections as Post hoc rationalizations, which could falsely cause people to believe he could predict future events. Just because there's a correlation doesn't mean there is causation.
This is also common in biblical interpretation. If one is beginning with the mindset that an omniscient deity inspired every word (even though it's been through so many translations and copies of copies and some of the later writings had the goal of fulfilling the previously written "prophecies"), then that person could falsely see correlation or causation where there is none. That's why learning about Skepticism, is so very important. (It should be a mandatory part of every curriculum).
In the case of this video however, it's sometimes fun to let our brains wonder away temporarily.

I remember “playing the game” when it first broke on the Internet 1.0. I was already a long-time Pink Floyd fan as a teenager (started listening to them at around five or so). It was definitely fun and works the best with just one play-through.
One glaring flaw in the “more than coincidence, this is purposeful” theory is very simple. As cosmopolitan as they could be at times, Pink Floyd were very much an English band and The Wizard of Oz is very much an American cultural artefact. Furthermore, if it was purposefully designed, they could have done it better 😉. And finally, it was well documented as to how this album came about and no one ever uttered Oz.
That said, this spontaneous synthesis does bring to light some interesting parallels between the works. Both were financially successful works that took advantage of some technological innovations. Both were informed by political issues, though Oz’s source novel was more about specific American politics from the 1890s (specifically about currency standard) whereas the album dealt with broader issues of modern living. Both have accumulated various legends and both have endured to be classics beyond its initial generation.
So all in all … it’s all dark down in Emerald City 😁

Most everyone does this wrong. Here are some pro tips.
    1. Start the synch normally. Like he said, Balanced on the biggest wave really stands out.
    2. When the CD ends, have The Wall ready. Insert Comfortably Numb right there. The Tin Man will be dancing in step with it.
    3. After Comfortably Numb, start DSOTM again. Once again, you're looking for the lion's third roar. Only this time it's the Cowardly Lion. He roars twice and does a micro-roar. That's the one.
    4. The second time through, the music lines up even better with the movie than the first time. It will bend your head. For balanced on the biggest wave, the Scarecrow is dancing down the road and loses his balance. Also the part where the Cowardly Lion is singing about being the king of the forest is truly priceless.
    5. When that runs out, we go back to The Wall. Play The show must go on.
    6. The movie ends during Run like Hell.
Do all this and you will have the optimum Dark Side experience. I did this maybe 25 years ago and I've seen it over 50 times.
If you get it all perfect, record it to a digital movie file or press it to a VCR tape. It's very hard to get perfect, but so worth it when it comes time to replay it.

This is absolutely true. If you play DSOTM backwards and start the movie 2001, when Time starts the line "Ticking away the hours that make up a dull day" (which is now at the end of the song) coincides with the apeman throwing the bone into the air and now says. "And man and the Devil will never conquer the galaxy." Freaky I know.

two more things about the trouble with syncing this up:
Different CD pressings of DSotM don't even sync up perfectly with each other. Each remaster/remix has a different transfer from analog tape and different speed corrections applied.
different home video versions of Wizard Of Oz will differ slightly, since movies are made of individual 20 minute reels of film, and sometimes the changeover is off by a couple frames from remaster to remaster.

I say perfectly cause you can have 5 or 6 syncs when you try to match a random album with a random movie. But over a hundred syncing points within the Dark Side of OZ is something else. Anyway it is a great master piece , the twister scene and than the movie turning colored right when Money begins to play. It's really amazing, no matter how was done.

The whole album has transitions to the next song. There is one transition in the album which is the most subtle and that's in the middle of the Album from "Great Gig in the sky" to "Money" and exactly there the movie goes from Black and White to Technicolor. Exactly like the album cover.
That's in my opinion the biggest coincidence.

This is what I love about ‘fortunes’ or consulting the I Ching… there is only the meaning we subjectively assign to it and that in itself is lovely-like déjà vu, the only there, there is the there that we retroactively assign to the there.

There is a rather mysterious connection between the bands Queen and Gentle Giant, though I have no idea whether the members of the former had ever heard of the latter. First, Frank Zappa was once asked in an interview what music he listened to apart from his own - he famously answered, "I like Queen. I like Gentle Giant". Second, GG also ended their album with the rock rendition of the British National Anthem - only they did it five years earlier than Queen. Third, Queen's 1991's hit song "I'm going slightly mad" suspiciously resembles both musically and idea-wise the Gentle Giant's 1978's song "Giant for a day". Even the music videos for them are somewhat similar.

The amount and extent of synchronicity between completely random video and audio elements is unquantifiable... but often hilarious, sometimes bizarrely anomalous, and occasionally so synchronous as to seem impossible, or predestined by a higher intelligence.
