    The ants are there because they love the sugar water too, but you CAN keep them away, I have 1000's of hummingbirds here and they are the easiest to deal with to get rid of. Our ants do not swim....Hope none of the swimming ants from North Queensland followed Gary here, LOL.

    Hi from down under. Yep, got a lot of ants here too. Actually I think they do the breaststroke around my house and I swear some of them are attempting the backstroke too. I think I may be in big trouble when they start diving from the wooden shelves where my small pots are. Guess they do deserve a gold medal for effort because they keep on marching with rubber boots on....

    We hang out hummingbird feeders on a metal post lodged in the ground. The “shepherds hook” style of post. If you coat the base of the post - from the ground Len (on all sides of the post) up to about 6” with a layer of Vaseline the ants will either get stuck in the Vaseline or just slide down the slippery surface. It can cause some discoloring to the post but it does work

    • @marialong2950
      @marialong2950 2 года назад

      Hi Kurt, please do not grease your post with Vaseline. I've seen hummingbirds accidentally fly into the Vaseline and get it all over their wings. Hummingbirds can't fly properly once Vaseline is stuck on their feathers. It would be similar to a duck being covered in oil from an oil spill....

    Hi Folks, please do not add grease on or near your feeders to deter ants. The hummingbirds might accidentally get the grease on their feathers, and they will not be able to fly properly. An ant moat with water is all you need.

    @ Alissa K. I put out a dish with stones and sugar water in it for the bees and wasps. It's not totally keeping the bees off, but it helps. Also check to see if your feeder leaks. That can attract bees and wasps to the feeder. The stones keep the bees from drowning in the dish (for the most part).
    I'm going to make some ant motes today. My ants get inside the feeder and sour the sugar water.

      Make a sugar solution of 6 to 1. The sweeter the better. Add a touch of dish soap and fill with water. The hornets etc will fly in the side and be weighted down. Let them rot in there. You'll see that they will kill each other. The funkier the better. Put these off to the side yard. They'll find it.

    I know people say ant moats work but I had a moat on a glass bottle feeder and the ants did swim into the it, down the bottle and through the holes where the hummers sip. There must have been over a hundred ants inside the bottle in the nectar. It was a horror in my sink getting them out and down the drain. Most of those in the nectar were still alive. Trust me. I have never dealt with anything so awful. And they kept coming! Needless to say, I had to stop using that feeder. I use a combo of vaseline on the hook above the one at the moat plus the water. Some still get in but not many.

    Fyi we don't have any hummingbirds, eagles, gophers, skunks, bobcats, snakes, or rabies in Hawai'i. Our sugarcane and pineapple crops have gone off to foreign countries. The Ewa plain used to be sugarcane now it's all houses where I live. Very sad, bldg, bldg, bldg non stop. Median price homes at $1,000,000, believe me they aren't gorgeous. 30,000 people a year are leaving Hawai'i for better opportunities😭

      @@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy I have 6 raised beds and have followed your compost in place. Just transplanted 8 tomato seedlings, did not go well. Put 2 together in large pot, okay. Other 6 not good. Took 2 back out of bed into pots. Only the 2 in large pot might make it😭

    Why can't the ants have sugar water?

    • @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
      @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy  2 года назад +1

      That is totally up to you but usually the hummingbirds will not drink the sugar nectar once the ants have at it. 🙂

    FIRE ANTS DO SWIM OR THEY DO IN EAST TEXAS. THEY ALSO MAKE A BRIDGE WITH SEVERAL BODIES.

    • @terri9261
      @terri9261 Месяц назад +1

      Had awful fire ants in Florida that could swim and would also make flat colonies so you stepped in them easily. In NC they prefer mounds and are not the issue with hummingbirds. It’s sugar ants here. But yes! Fire ants are the most resilient ants I ever encountered.

    Feed the ants beneath the hummingbird feeders. ... even on the ground. Don't kill the ants. Other birds eat ants.

    I have one feeder but get those awful hornets + when they sting u it hurts so bad but to try to kill them is a whole other story I can’t explain because u can’t use sprays or any other pesticides on those feeders because that would kill the birds ! Those dam hornets chase those poor birds of prey because that way they can get a free meal , the lazy shits + u still can’t kill them because u will upset what’s still in the feeder or who at the time because if those little birds r hungry they r not going to let those hornets ruin their meal , especially the moms who need to feed their babies ! ❤️🐇🐰☄️❤️‍🔥💖💓❣️💕🧚‍♀️🧚🏿‍♂️🧚🏼💙🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵🤍💜🖤🩶🤎💔❤️‍🔥💖💘💝☮️☯️✝️☪️❣️💕💞💖💘💝❤️‍🩹🐰🐇😍🥰😘💀☠️😻🌹🥀🎹🎼🎸🎻🪕7️⃣4️⃣is my age now of this year 2023 !
