@@charsnest147 no thank you I've made a about 8. I've asked all my friends and family to save them for me. They're so much nicer then the store bought ones and cheaper, plus you can make them shorter or longer depending on what your needs are. Thank you again for sharing 😊
We put a dab of essential oil near the feeder ports but not too close to the holes where the hummers feed. Peppermint, citrus, tea tree work well to repel ants. Hummers aren’t bothered by the scent. It keeps the bugs from getting in & ruining the sugar water. Works to keep hornets away also. We hang our feeders on fishing line, ants don’t climb it.
I watched your preview and made one for my feeder and it works great so far.Thank you for sharing your video, really enjoy learning how to make an ant moat.😊
@@charsnest147 Thanks makes sense. I wll do the same as I'm using a laundry soap cap also. The small reservoir in my existing feeder lid evaporates way too quickly in these heat waves this month.
Yes, all you need is water! Ants cannot walk on water, nor do they swim! Keep the ant moat full up to the brim. I've never had an ant problem bc ants cannot get to the chain. Also, you don't need to paint the ant moat. The paint could be toxic to the hummingbirds and/ or the other birds. Remember, hummingbirds also drink regular water as do other birds. I've had sparrows, goldfinches, and canaries stop by and get a few sips of water from the ant moats. They only take a few sips so they don't drain it. And the hummingbirds have gotten used to them on top while they are on the feeders. 💞
Just refilled my feeder due to nasty ants. This looks perfect. Just need to find a wire coat hanger. Dry cleaners I'm thinking. And extra caps - local laundry mat. Thank you. :)
Hey I got a feeder but I missing the top where it hangs. And I don't know what to do. I only got the watter bottom and that's it. And I really want to use it. Any suggestions
Exactly, if you have to invest in so many supplies, you can buy a moat online. I made one a couple of years ago with a white wire hanger, water bottle and a craft glue gun, all free or in the case of the glue gun, I already had. But I do think the detergent bottle cap is much more attractive and may try making one with cap, if I can find one in red, which attracts the hummingbirds.
Well, I'm gonna give this a try! I did find that wrapping some mint around the base of my feeder pole helped out bunches also, just a little tip I found along the way! Nice, simple video! Wish me luck and an antless future lol 😁👍✌
Tip: put a drop of oil on top of the water, it will spread naturally to cover the surface. . If not the ants can walk on water! Also, why do you bother to paint the plastic??
I tried using hot glue but that didn’t work well. I might try silicone instead. That is funny that you painted the cups when they were already coloured.
How clever ! & so easy !! ! But I have more trouble with the dang wasps and hornets 🐝 all over my feeders … Help !! They are scaring the hummingbirds away ! Sept 6,2022 Ants 🐜 no biggy but the it’s the flying pests I have ALOT of trouble with do you have anything for that ?? 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏?
I get that the paint is to retard the plastic disintegrating from the sun. I would skip using yellow as it tends to attract bees. I got a top fill glass feeder with red flowers and the hummers prefer it over the traditional style, plus the bees so far ignore it. Also since wire hangers are becoming endangers I just used some craft wire.
Oh my goodness, I threw away so many caps. I wish I had seen this video before as I am battling with ants all over my feeders and now it is wasps/hornets and they are chasing my hummingbirds away.
One year, near the end of our season the ants were all over my feeder, so I put it on the table and poured a puddle of water on the table, this was when I first realized ants don’t like water, lol.
What's the purpose of painting them the same color they already are. Just a waste of time and money. And the video could of been over in 4 minutes instead of 9 minutes. Great idea though.
Great idea. I’ll skip the painting though.
These are the nicest looking diy ones.
Thank you! :)

Great to hear!
I knew there had to be a way to keep those pesky ants out!! Thank you for sharing!!!
Great suggestion! I’m not sure that painting them makes much sense, but this is an easy project with “trash” I have on hand.
Does painting prevent sun cracking? If just for looks, I'll skip painting.
A spray paint for outdoor ppastic furniture would be better for sub wear even a clearcoat of it over the hand painted acrylics. @arlenekufchock1394
Wonder why you used so much silicone on the tiny hole?
I wanted to make sure it was sturdy. I'm sure you can use less.
@@charsnest147 Thanks makes sense. I wll do the same as I'm using a laundry soap cap also. The small reservoir in my existing feeder lid evaporates way too quickly in these heat waves this month.
Love it!! Thank you!! 🦋🦋🦋
Is there a reason you painted and clear coated the bottle caps, other than to make them look pretty? Thank you
Brilliant! I was going to order or buy some. I'm just going to make some now. 😊
🥰 LOVE THE IDEAL OF USING LAUNDRY DETERGENT CAPS CHEAP THUMPS UP
Great video with very great ideas. Thank you soooo much.
I use prescription bottles but I like the large bottle caps.
Painting step could have passed.
I like your idea I just don’t know why you painted them!
Just to make them pretty. :)
Cause she wanted to
How do ants stay away ? They could climb over and down chain. Was that just water in the top ?

Love these! Great size, too! Thank you for sharing!
Glad you like them!
wow great idea, thanks for the video !!!!

This is pretty slick.
Thanks.
I love the idea of the way to my silicone isn't it
Huh?
Simple and a good way to recycle something
Brilliant! Thank you-

What a great idea! I hope this works for you. :)
My peppermint and spearmint are both over run with ants.
Tip: put a drop of oil on top of the water, it will spread naturally to cover the surface. . If not the ants can walk on water! Also, why do you bother to paint the plastic??
Hummers sometimes sample the water so this could be harmful to them. Plain water has worked for me for decades.
Some plastics have a tendency to break down faster in the sun. Painting them will preserve them longer.
Ants cannot pass over the moats to get to the feeders. I wouldn't put oil on the top of the water bc other birds do drink from the moats.
Great idea, but why so much silicone. I plan on making these. My feeders are covered in ants😢
I tried using hot glue but that didn’t work well. I might try silicone instead. That is funny that you painted the cups when they were already coloured.
Why did you paint them?
Just to make them colorful. It isn’t necessary
How clever ! & so easy !!

I get small plastic storage containers instead of lid
Great idea! Easy peasy! Thanks 8:37
Good luck on finding a wire hanger, thank you for the video

Great video, thank you
Thanks or not explaining as you go. Why did you paint them? Maybe just the hooks.😁
Very 👍 🙂 nice
Thank you. 🙏

I use hot glue instead of silicone. Dries immediately
Prefect...
pourquoi repeindre les 3 bouchons de la couleur initiale?? tout ça pour faire des fontaines !!!!!!🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
How can I make one if my feeder is a up side down bottle
I think she paints them to protect the plastic from the sun
I didn’t understand their purpose
They keep ants from getting into the feeders.
Really?
There sure are a lot of mean comments on here. Goodness me!
A drop of dish soap will break the surface tension of the water and ants can’t walk on it.
Seriously you don’t need that much silicone!
Contact cement works better. Why paint them, thats a wast of time and money. Its easier to go to lowes and buy them for about 4 bucks
What's with all the silicone? Trying to make an island? You shouldn't be allowed to play with tools.😂
Oh ! I thought it was brilliant to paint them. Specially the same color they already are. Duh......
Wow! You're so cool. Karen
Why can't you talk???
You talk too much karen

Hey I'll bet people tell you every day how much you suck. Who cares if you paint it or not. Your nobody.
lets watch the paint dry, to
