  • Hey guys! Since feeling so exhausted physically and mentally recently I've been implementing a couple changes (work phone, sauna, more social plans) to help create more work/life boundaries! It's something we all struggle with, especially when you run a business, it can be 24/7. Leave me a comment and let me know how you balance it all. Love Lily x

The reason Mom&Pop enterprises were successful in the early 20th century is because you had 2 equally invested people sharing the load. You alone, with only occasional part-time help, is a huge burden easily leading to burnout. That said, I find soft, calming background music a great help in relaxing the strain of anxiety.

100%, can’t wait to have a small team to work together and lighten the load. Thank you for your suggestion 💕

I relate so much to this as a home baker myself. It’s a lot of strain and work especially on your own. I am also manifesting a restful life, where I work to live instead of living to work 💛✨

    Hi Lily,
I have a bakery here in Brazil and I am very inspired by you to start new bread making projects as I only make homemade cakes. Thank you so much for sharing your day with me.

Hi Lily ! I am from a small village in France and I am a baker too, having my own micro-bakery and what you are sharing is exacly what i am experiencing right now. And I have got 2 children, a husband and... a cat :-) ! So I think that we have to pay attention to our feelings and be extra carefull about burn-out when we are entrepreners. It could slip very quickly. Thank you so much for your true and sincer videos. You are great and talented. Have a wonderfull journey in your micro-bakery business.

I usually refer to it as "work-work balance". That's as good as I've got it so far. You do come across as calm. Trust me, this is pretty hard. You will already be addicted to the chaos and you'll miss it if you do get a sense of control. Balance is the key, but in reality it's a constant see saw between in control and out of control. You learn to just ride the waves and not stress as much. (Well that's me anyway, I've been running 3 different small businesses for a LONG time)

Hi Lily, you might check out the book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown. I think it gets to the heart of focusing in on what is essential in your life (both personal and professional) and focusing your energy, time, thoughts on those things while letting go of the rest. Rather than trying to do too many things and not doing any of them at your best. I’ve found this book to be really helpful in shifting my mindset and eliminating nonessential stress. Sending lots of love!

Hi, Lily. Hope you are doing fine. I like the music on your video it’s so peaceful. Thank you for being so open about your emotions and feelings. Some days can be harder to handle and it’s good that you try to make peace in your work time. It’s okay to feel it. Mental health is very important. And talking about it helps to not feel alone. I used to work in a bakery and know I’m working by my own, handle a baking business need a lot of effort. Keep going you are doing great and you are an inspiration. You are not alone Lily 🫶🏻✨.

So good of you to share the not-so-obvious struggles you are dealing with while running a business. I'm trying to run (emphasis on the trying 🥲) a business from home while homeschooling a young child and dealing with a lot of anxiety around perfectionism and there are a few things that I very recently implemented in my daily life routine: getting the groceries/drugstore items/other stuff delivered to my doorstep (being a bit selfish here but it made a huge impact on the stress around keeping everything together), getting rid of a lot of stuff at home and at the same time invest in a few pieces to help create a more minimalistic and easier to clean/tidy up household, being very (😅) gentle on the making dinner part (= choosing relatively healthy options but that don't require a lot of prepping), having small routines that make me feel better: taking vitamins everyday and investing in a luxurious skincare routine, discovering new music. Mainly simplifying things in my daily life and trying to find a new balance between what's important and what is less important I guess and taking a lot of baby steps to make sure routines will stick around. One thing that I really want to add to the list: go on a daily morning and/or evening walk!

I lie on my bed and do nothing all the time! I *plan for it* in my day!!! Sometimes I read; sometimes I just lie there. Do feel guilty about short bits of recovery always needed and often on a daily basis. Now for some news! There is a saying we use in California a lot "you do you". Live by that and it helps on the stress.
I did an EXPERIMENT. I had bought some pumpernickel meal/flour, whatever and I've used it only a little over the past year. So, I soaked about 150 grams with an equal amount of water. I had a starter going as well. After a few hours the pumpernickel absorbed all the water as expected. Now, my starter is dark rye ('cuz its fun to watch grow!) and I usually, in say use a lot of extra starter, say, in 750 grams of flour instead of using 600 grams of bread flour and 150 grams of whole wheat or rye, I simply use 300 grams of rye starter and kill two birds with one stone. A n y w a y....I decided to add a bunch of starter, like 75 grams (I did it by eye) to the pumpernickel! And, guess what? It started GROWING!!!!! Yeah! So I then added all this to the dough. They are in the oven now but look GREAT. Can't wait to try it. Pumpernickel starter...who knew?
BTW...I love the classical musing you intersperse into your video. LOVE that.

Have you ever used cake strips around your cake pans? They really work and help so much with keeping the cake level as it bakes. I got some on Amazon of course they are purple cotton quilted strips like a wet belt for the cake pans

Newer cottage baker with two kids here and am wondering what this 'social life' is you speak of? I think at some point we all hit that part in our lives where social either fits or it doesn't. I worked at family restaurants in my 20s and my bosses were all the elders of the family that had exchange their friends for time in the kitchen many years ago. I'm sure there are some that make it work though. It was an easy transition for me since I became socially isolated before covid and just sort of never went back out into the world. Wishing you a gentler time in the kitchen. ❤

Burn out. If you say the word burn out, then you're suffering burn out. Thing is you can only rely on yourself so to motivate what about getting in touch with some other youtube bakers. There's a fabulous person named Kris K??? (Sorry, forgot her last name). Like minded person to share and compare and learn and guide. Just a thought which could help.

Looking at the growth you had over the years your small business is very succesful. However I think that you work /life is out of balance. Your home and workplace is on the same spot and in this way you are confronted with your job 24/24 and 7/7. I also wonder if you technical equipment is sufficient to turn around the volume your a doing. Perhaps considering better and larger equipment might be of help. You can also scale down of course but is up to you to decide. In respect of the burn out, you need to look for professional help from experience I have had with staff who suffered a full blown burn out professionals can help and advice you.
