Bhutan not recognizing either China or Taiwan is a bit of a longer story - Bhutan doesn't have a list of "these are the countries i recognize as real countries", what people say Bhutan recognizes is actually countries Bhutan has diplomatic relations with, but the thing is that Bhutan is very isolationist, only opening relations on a need-to basis, having India handle most of their daily affairs.
so its not Bhutan not recognizing China or Taiwan, its Bhutan deciding they don't need any business with them so they don't send a diplomatic mission to them.
If you define Bhutan recognizing a country by whether they sent a mission to them, then by this definition Bhutan doesn't recognize the United States nor UK, and only recognizing Germany since 2020. In fact Bhutan only holds relations with 54 countries.

Cue dots 😁
So thats what that is! I've been wondering for years why he kept adding it.
Cue dots are a cue to the regional commercial TV stations to be ready to press play on their regional adverts tape recorder kinda thing.
A bit like the big black dot in films in the cinema which did a very similar job of alerting the projectionist to be ready to press play on the next reel of film projector.
As mentioned nearby, they can also be used by the more observant of us to nip off to the loo.
Lastly, in another example of Concordian backwards progress, there were TV receivers and recorders which used them to allow their owners to skip the adverts entirely. These put the viewers first marvels were quickly made illegal, I kid you not!
Now that you know that they're there, it'll probably be a while before you forget the fact so I apologise for being one of a number here who has brought them to your attention.

I'd say that's right. In the original script, we also included Luhansk and Donetsk. But after thinking about it, in the final version we decided not to include them, because only one country recognises them (Russia) and casually mentioning them alongside the other examples looked a little too much like we supported Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. But we’d already filmed the bingo caller sketches, and it was too difficult to change all the numbers for the rest of the episode. We thought nobody would notice (or, more accurately, we didn’t notice ourselves!)
@@JayForeman Nuh-uh, before Lugansk and Donetsk People's Republics were _kindly taken_ by Motherland, they were also officially recognized by Syria and Korea of the North, as well as by some partially recognized and totally non-recognized states around the region of Eastern Europe. The most important reason to have a fixed list of exactly how many countries there are is to be able to have an interactive web quiz where you have to name every country (and capital, flag, etc) and be absolutely sure you get a 100% score on the whole earth. It depends doesn't cut it!!!

@@Deimos2k5Is that just the UN‘s 195 plus Taiwan and Kosovo? Pretty good list I‘d say, as those two are far closer to being actual countries than like Abkhazia or Niue for example.
But it really does depend. It even depends on when you ask the question. Up until the 1960s or 1970s (not sure) both the western Republic of Germany and the eastern German Democratic Republic didn't recognize each others. Even up until the German Democratic Republic collapsed, both claimed that they were representing all Germans, that's why refugees from the German Democratic Republic immediately received a Republic of Germany passport and the RAF terrorists (Rote Armee Fraktion, not Royal Air Force) that fled into the GDR became GDR citizens immediately. And even though even the Soviet Union recognized Israel, the German Democratic Republic never did, because that way they didn't have to pay reparations for WWII to Holocaust survivors represented by Israel.

It becomes even more complicated when you think about that some countries (like for example lebanon and syria) have different factions within them that act independently.
And there also a few more rebelions who are generally not really seen as full-on unrecognised countries becouse they are too weak to be seen as such, but who claim to be such, and control their own small territories. And there also a cases of some territories in politically unstable regions that are fully sovereign from the countries they are in, but do not claim full independence to not really cause more international and internal conflicts (like some areas in Somalia or Myanmar, and formerly in Mexico)
Well, any country recognizing those countries probably chooses a faction to align themselves with, so it's all the same in terms of overall count. You probably won't have a country recognizing multiple warring factions as legitimate ruling governments of the same territory, and if you do, it certainly won't be a significant enough number to impact the count.
@@cabin98 That's only true if all factions involved have ambitions to control exactly the same borders. If there are some separatists inside a recognized state that only want to control a part of that state, it gets tricky.
7:11 Maybe it was a joke, but how did the count increase by 4 (from 195 to 199) when UK (1 "country") was "uncombined" into 4 countries (an increase of 4 -1 = 3)? Or would they be counting BOTH the UK (1 country) AND its constituents (4 countries)?
Beat me to it. It was maybe just an oversight
Counting both, because there was no mention of exclusivity with other "countries'" territories and populations.
He put in Gibraltar too 😂
UK
Northern Ireland
England
Scotland
Wales
All of them make the UK.
@@nickdentoom1173 yes, and how many more are four than one? three more. but they added four more to the counter, hence OP's question.
This is incredibile. Last night I tought "hey, Jay Foreman exists and I miss him" and now i can watch this video!!! Thank you!!!
(Mark, on the contrary, is always in my thoughts and I never forget about him)
Actually, there's a bunch of countries that don't recognise Jay Foreman as existing. It depends who you ask.
Yes
I've been binge watching MapMen and Unfinished London lately and I'm so happy there's a new MapMen episode.
love that Barbs cameo for just about a second
Wait I love how there’s an ad break set up before mid roll ads
Map Men and CGP Grey taking different approaches and arriving at the same answer is the definition of why science and RUclips are so much fun.
Is CGP Catalog of U S Government Publications? Cambodia Genocide Program? Controlled Goods Program? Community Grant Program? Certified Guitar Player? Something else perhaps? Any accurate information you are able to provide is appreciated.
@@Tom.Livanos "CGP Grey" is the name of a RUclips channel, which has uploaded videos whose subjects are sometimes similar to the ones found in videos on the "Map Men" RUclips channel.
@@VAB0L0 Understood. Is 'CGP' a random sequence of three letter, or does it mean something?
@@Tom.Livanos It's the guy's name. Colin Gregory Palmer Grey.
@@ReadyToHarvest
Ah. Much appreciated. Good that it is the person's name. For me, this is from a reliability point of view.
I need for absolutely everyone to pause at 8:19 so you can read all of the other definitions

That worm crossing the bottom of the screen at 7:40, though...😂😂😂
Also, can we count Barbs at 10:33 as a cameo, or merely a micro-cameo? 😂😂😂
Map Men is the only show on RUclips where I _don't_ skip the promotions! 🤣
I love you guys so much. So glad you're back together and making these again. Keep up the hilarious and interesting work!

This whole quick-flash slide show bit was rather humorous

Now that you guys have used it twice now, we need a full Jay Foreman Dictionary.
Yes! this would be great!
Boys I want to compliment you on your work…the British humor “sprinkles” woven into the episodes make it epic.
The only 100% true and factually objective listing of countries is the _Squarest country song_
I 400% agree.
You know it’s a good year when jay foreman uploads

I imagine Jay waltzed in a fishing shop and asked for 22 cans of worms
It’s video edited (at least I hope it is…)
What I like about these videos is that they answer all and none of my questions at the same time
1 planet = 200ish countries
Sounds like a typical archaic Imperial unit of measure to me!
In the future, we should all adopt the geographic metric system, where 1 planet = 10 continents = 100 countries
Oh shit. Now i gonna need elaborate a map/list like that, just to calm my metric mind.
1 universe 10 galaxy clusters 100 galaxies 1 000 suns 10 000 planets 100 000 continents 1 000 000 countries
Battle Royale
It can't be metric. A planet is spherical, and every calculation that measures a sphere uses the value π. Ergo to measure a planet's countries one must use π, which is not a factor of 10 or any other integer. I'd guess the number of countries on a planet can simply be any multiple of π (also meaning a minimum of π countries on each planet, including the likes of Pluto), but this might just be wishful thinking to bring simplicity to such a complicated problem.
@@kaie333 Thank you. Henceforth, all planets will be routinely shaved into cubes.
Yet again, another superb geography explainer from the Map Men. @Jay Foreman - you're always making maps fun and I love every second of it😘
Rebuttal to the tree argument: you do not have complete control over that tree, you can't start a meth lab on that tree, cannot murder someone on that tree. If you do, the real government will come at you
so the tree is autonomous but not sovereign?
@@thewrens_ Well, maybe the Son of the Tree that Owns Itself is sovereign, but anyone who wants to live in there isn't.
So country status is dependent on how willing someone else is to seize the territory by force? ...Actually that started as a joke but that's a pretty good definition.
@@professorhaystacks6606 In this definition antarctica isn't a country, since pretty much every govt has agreed none of them are going to seize it. And you know what? i think im fine with antarctica not being called a country! no permanent and no real govt either.
@@divyanshaggarwal6292 Might need some tweaking: Someone somewhere has to WANT to seize the territory by force, but be unable to for it to be a 'country'. If they are able to then it is 'in flux' and not yet a firm 'country' and if no one wants to it is Antarctica.

How did you do that?
@@andrewwebb917 Someone opened up an RfC, basically a structured public comment, regarding their use of the infobox. Specifically, it was about whether there was a community consensus to make them use a different infobox. Ultimately, I was the "closer", which meant I made the final judgment of what the community consensus was-and I made the decision that there was consensus for making them use a new infobox.
