I watched an interview with a famous hairdresser about going gray. He said for some women it was as difficult as coloring. Fighting the frizz, less body, needing lowlights, extra conditioning , purple shampoo, etc. His guideline was if one has very pale, blue-veined skin, light eye color, pale to non-existent brows and thin hair it will be aging. If one has dark eyes and brows, skin that tans easily and thick hair it can be flattering with proper care, but not youthful. Bottom line - have the hair that makes you happy.

Blue veins are cool toned skin, greeny veins warm toned. Many shades of blonde, a more platinum or silver grey is cool, golds are warm. Bit of blusher in the right sade works wonders. x

I read something similar. It made me put off going gray. I am so glad I read that. Because the reason I was even thinking of going gray was because I thought it would make life so wonderful. But there are almost more items to use to maintain the gray. Then my routine calls for.

I am in the same boat, Patty. About six months ago I decided to let my hair grow out and as a prematurely grey woman who has had grey hair since 30, I have been fighting it for many decades. I am 76. But, the more it grew, the whiter it got, so with the ends still showing remnants of hair color, I have given up. Every time I look in the mirror, I can't believe how old I look. So, i have given in and will be getting low lights and hi lights next week. Like you, I need dimension. So, wish me luck. And, good luck to you!

Nope, no gray for me, Patty 😂!
I'm 78yrs and tried to go gray, but it made me look much older.
I'm born and raised in New Orleans and boxed colored my hair.
After finally asking many ladies my age where they had their hair colored, I got Loreal # 8 1/2 blonde and did my own color.
Finally I found a nice hair stylist that does low lights and highlights.
I am thrilled!!! I am now a medium blonde with highlights! The foil bleached low lights extend into the gray areas so when any gray starts to show, it looks like extra light blonde vs gray roots!!!
I get so many compliments and my husband and adult kiddos love my new fashionable hair!!!
I have an idea you'd like to do something similar.
I have lots of body in my hair! As you mentioned, my hair was FLAT!!!
I'm wishing you the best and thanking you for all the wonderful things you have guided me through!!
God Bless You 🙏🏼 ❤ Linda from New Orleans

I had not colored my hair for 3 years and decided to put it really light blond again. It was just too much upkeep for me. Now I'm growing it out gray again and I'm loving it. I have also started spraying my setting spray on a sponge instead of spraying my face. I think my makeup stays looking good longer. Your hair has always been so beautiful. I don't know if you remember me, but you were the first video I watched and it was around the time just before my husband passed away from Alzheimer's. Don't go gray Pattie! You will not be happy. On young people gray looks good but on women our age it really makes us look even older! I went platinum white and loved it. It brighten up my face and then I decided I'd just let my hair grow out and go with my natural gray. Well all I can say is the more it grew out the older and more tired I looked! Every line and wrinkle and circles under my eyes just magnified! So I told my husband I cant stand this anymore and I bit the bullet and lightened it again to platinum. I did it myself. When I finished and my husband saw it he said wow honey you look so beautiful. You look younger. It really brightens up your skin. So I'm staying with platinum. I get lots of positive compliments. Everyone loves this color. Also I had long hair. I cut it myself to just above my shoulders. Looks much thicker now too. Not such a drag on my face. Pattie please dont do any of those color grays you showed. It will age you. You wont like it! Go platinum! You will love how it brighten your skin and makes you look younger.

I ended up coloring my own because I'm not up to paying the cost lately. My grey was blonde anyway so blonde it was. Not to make me look younger, but to have my hair look more presentable. Yes...coloring gives my fine hair body! We are not supposed to wash every day...even thoughi sometimes do.
I heard recently that sitting all day is equivalent to being a smoker, with the harm it does to our heart.

I'm joining the chorus when I say just let the hair grow out! I had not seen my natural hair color in over 50 years when I saw the white roots. I was shocked! My hair was a dark brown and like you, I've frosted, streaked and colored my hair to a color very much like your ends are now. It is a hard habit to break but I just asked my regular stylist what to do. She used a shampoo in silver/white concoction and sent me home with a bottle. It takes a while but oh my, I absolutely love it! I have more body, more hair and a little more money but the dry ends and frizzies are gone! It's so much easier and it looks much better. You are at that hard stage. "Do I stay or do I go?" I don't believe you'll regret it! Get some professional help to get over this growing out stage and you'll never look back! Good luck with all your guests and just enjoy them!

I think going natural is great. I support it...I tried and failed. Gray is a color and it washed me out! I wanted to transition but truth be told didn't work for me. I might be blonde indefinitely. I really think it's a individual decision. I so support everyone embracing nature. I just couldn't, not yet.

Yes I agree but there is a reason for that because red is the first color molecule we lose and if you look at a child highlights you will see warm colors and as we age our color looks more like asphalt and has no warmth. This is something I have had to explain to my clients for years and when I explain it this way they get it. If you have a cool skin undertone which is a pink undertone you can go pure white, for us with a neutral or yellow base we need a hint of warmth. There is very simple tricks that are still low maintenance. I myself am pure white in the front and salt and pepper in the back and there is nothing attractive about the it. So it is the one thing I won’t go without in a month. I have made hair kits for my clients so they can do it themselves and all of you can do the same.

  • @rt3box6tx74
    @rt3box6tx74 9 месяцев назад +2

I let mine grow off over a couple of yrs. I used Loreal dark blond color spray to cover my sparkling white roots all the way through the process.
I made the semi-reluctant decision to go white because my natural color had lost the variation in shades that allowed me to easily have a two-toned effect, especially around my face. There were no natural dark blond streaks left to give me the variation in shades of blond without having a two step color process that was twice the time investment of what we'd been doing for a decade. My hairdresser and I being of the same vintage remembered a process we studied in cosmetology school called lifting with color. It's much less harsh than using bleach to highlight, but only works for natural colors no darker than "dishwater". If ya know, ya know!
To top it off my 35 yr hairdresser decided to retire when we heard rumors more waves of virus were likely. She'd worked straight through the first two waves, because her shop was in her side yard and all her clients were careful. She disinfected the one-room salon between each client. I went once a month for color, but would not have gone into a regular salon.
I had a 10 year backup hairdresser picked out, but when I tried to make contact with her post pandemic she'd disappeared.
I finally cut off the last of my blond ponytail at the beginning of summer 2023. Figured I'd wear a ball cap if my hair was too difficult to put up off my neck during the dog days of summer.
I'm almost back where I need to be with length, but I'm not sold on the color. My scalp is white, my bangs and front hair back to the crown is flat white, it's not at all interesting. I'm an experienced hairdresser and instructor myself. I know trying to achieve the tonal effect I desire would be a constant challenge, since we always want our color refreshed long before the previous color treatment has grown off.
I know there are color experts out there that can offer what I want, but I probably don't want to get on a plane to Dallas (45 min flt) to go for a color job every six weeks. I'll try this dull white look for another year to see if I can find a haircut or color rinse that looks more lively. The violet shampoos dont work for me. I've never considered having short hair since my mid 40s, but I need some movement and without color the only way to achieve that is curls. I may try a wig this winter to see if I can find a look that helps me feel better about natural white hair.

Patti I love you videos. You were the reason I decided to grow my hair. It was getting difficult finding the money to keep going to the hairdresser all the time to get my hair cut and when I saw your hair I decided to let it grow. I’ve always wanted long hair so went from very short to now past my shoulders and I absolutely love it. I too have a mix or white, grey and blonde hair but I continue to dye it myself. It takes time and my arms get tired but I still can’t give up the very light blonde. Guess at 74yrs I’m still not ready to go natural. So thank you for giving me the courage to grow my hair long rather than fit in with the ‘older women should wear short hair’ dictates. You are such an inspiration and joy to watch. What I like about you the most is you’re down to earth and honest! I’m 76 and have had salt and pepper hair since I was in my late 20’s. The only time I left it natural was for 10 years when I was married. So most of my life it has been dyed blonde! (I was naturally blonde when I was very little) I stopped dying my hair about 18 months ago. It is long and naturally wavy and frizzy somewhat. It’s coming in salt and pepper and light gray! I can relate! I’m wearing it up mostly with pretty clips but I’m to the point where I would like it shorter too! I don’t miss coloring my hair but it’s feels so different to know it’s coming in a different color! I guess we will all find the perfect answer for ourselves! Changes! Enjoyed your video! Your eyes sparkle! It shows you love life and are kind!❤🙏🌸🦋

Hi There, just wanted to say, I love your attitude. It makes me smile, as I sit here dealing with the brutal passage of time and its effects on our bodies, not ever pretty. I am 67 and dealing with the ugliest crapey skin on my arms. I underwent chemo and radiation a few years back, it is my understanding that these along with the steroid use, have a devastating effect on skin! Very depressing. It brings me comfort that I am not the only one feeling these awful, sad feelings about the myriad effects of aging on the body. I sometimes feel too obsessed with my looks. But, what brings me comfort, is the knowledge that we all want to look good, no matter our ages. So, thank you for this, your brevity, kindness, sweetness, etc!

The gray hair transition is a challenge, but fortunately I did mine during the covid pandemic and it was a lot easier then. I went from a dark brunette to a beautiful silver. I grew it out for about 6 months and was sick of seeing the extreme color demarcation line between the two colors so my stylist cut it into a cute short bob. I still had some dark color on the ends so she bleached them out and put a color on just the ends that matched my natural silver hair. I love it and get more compliments on my hair than I ever did. Hang in there and don't give up. Enjoy all your company. I enjoy your videos so much and you sure look amazing for 80!

One tip about growing out your hair is to get your hair trimmed as short as you can while still keeping the style you like. Then, every 6 to 8 weeks, get it trimmed. You will be surprised how quickly you hair seems to get to its natural color.
As for color, my hair started turning when I was in 6th grade. By 15, had an inch wide white streak in the front. By 40, the front was 40% white. At 65, I was fed up with going to the salon every 3 weeks to get the roots touched up. I decided to go natural. Totally snow white. I have put temporary purple color in, but it stained my hair and I had to go through another grow out. Now I’m just all white. I constantly have strangers stop me in stores to tell me how beautiful the color is.
If you decide to color your hair, make sure it washes out completely and won’t stain your hair, because if you don’t like it, you may have to deal with grow out all over again. Advice: grow out to the natural color and live with it at least a few weeks before you make any decisions about color. You might be surprised especially when you are no longer a slave to the hair dye routine.

When I decided to stop coloring my hair after 40+ years of highlighting and coloring, my colorist put in highlights and lowlights to help with the transition. It worked beautifully. I never had that real line of distinction. And now that it is grown out, which by the way took about 10 months, still has its own natural definition. I say go for it! You will love it.

I grew out my gray during the lockdowns and love it! I got through the transition with headbands and scarves and kept it long. Finding someone who can do what Jack Martin (the man whose photos you showed) does is difficult and if it's not done correctly, you can end up ruining your hair. Try to just be patient. You've actually gotten through the awkward stage. Good luck.

My suggestion would be highlights and lowlights of blonde, ash blonde, and maybe some of the Grey. You're very fair skinned - so am I. I found the lighter I go, the more washed out I look. Also, if you want to transition to Grey, its a gentler way to do it.

I love your natural hair color/gray. I quit coloring my hair over a year ago now. I have a pixie & love it. I did recently get high & low lights so I don't look so washed out. It also gave me more body. I doubt I'll ever go back to coloring as the dye would be washed out within 3 weeks. I did learn to use a bright and/or dark lipstick. What a difference that makes!

Patti, I think that most of us, as we age, have to decide what to do about the incoming gray hair. My hair has no body without some type of color. My hairdresser is doing a great job of adding some blonde strands mixed in with my very light roots. It improves the texture greatly and I don’t have to use as much product, don’t have to wash it as frequently, and my hair just holds its shape better with much less effort on my part. To me, the results of adding some color to my hair make me feel happier with my appearance! It is definitely something that I want to keep doing. And, of course, I tell my hairdresser things that I share with no one else!

It took far too long for me to go gray because I am brunette and didn't recognize myself with what I call sad orange as I was urged to go lighter. Finally, I let it all grow out all white and cut off a lot. I took some Pinterest ideas to the beauty shop as you know to do. My hairdresser put in black streaks and undertones. I love it! My home dye jobs were not fooling any one.

Patty, your hair is lovely. We are the same age, my hair is thin and wispy-ugh! Here in Southern Calif, most stylists use a process called "reverse highlighting" for growing out previously colored hair. This allows hair to blend, and be pretty as gray is allowed to become the new hair color. A good stylist should be able to achieve this for you.

I get a lot of compliments on my hair. It seems to be the same kind of hair you have. I don’t shampoo it but once a week years ago, I got a broken back and had to start using a hair salon every week to get my hair shampooed I finally made a standing appointment for every Friday, which is very inexpensive, if products are put on my hair, it is my guy he says my hair is dry. I started out with sort of brown hair always frosted never full color just layers of frosting. It started going gray and he kept frosting at the same old way, changing a little bit of the frosting to a little lighter shade, everyone loves my hair not exactly the way it fixed but the color! I am 71 and I’ve had a lot of health problems which led to several surgeries. Every time I have a surgery, it thins my hair a little more from the anesthesia. I love the same things you do in the front being really lots of blonde, I ask for chunks in the summer, but my hair guy will see when I’m needing color and I get it about every six weeks and it keeps my hair full and the same color all the time. I suggest you find a hair specialist or you see someone you like (that’s what I did.) I told him the reason I was calling was because I loved someone so I was hair and I wanted color just like she had and I was very prompt and always asking to come back making an appointment every time I would go until I got a standing appointment once you do that even if you go on vacation you get your spot back when you come back in town. I have been letting my hair grow all summer so I could get in the pool and put it in a scrunchy. It was really getting ratty on the ends. He cut me a long bob with kind of a longer swing in the front, but not short in the back just a tiny bit longer in the front. I can use an electric roller and it during the week and keep my style until the following Friday I’ll try to send you a picture of my color, I definitely don’t like it when my gray grows out too much in the front I even went as far as to ask him to color the parts that fall down in the back end when I have my hair up in a ponytail, so now he does it toO.

Oh, yes! I’ve been right where you are with my hair! During the COVID lock-down, when we couldn’t get into beauty salons, I simply stopped coloring my hair and let it grow out from being colored dark brown for years - and it’s basically all white now. I, too, long for some dimension and variation of color. What I have been doing is pulling it up in a ponytail on top of my head, and adding a bun or claw clip hairpiece with mixed-grey/white synthetic hair (like I’ve seen you use). As long as there are some white streaks in it, it blends well with my hair, and there is my dimension of color! I don’t want to get back into the never-ending rat-race and expense of coloring my hair again!! I think this is my permanent (and very easy, I might add) hair-do for the rest of my life.😅

Hi Pattie, I love all of your videos. Here is my hair coloring experience and hope you find it helpful. I’m 68 and for years my hair had been dyed light brown (7NN) but I got tired of coloring my gray roots every 3 weeks so three months ago I decided to do something drastic --I decided to go blonde with the hopes that the gray roots would blend in nicely with the blonde so I wouldn’t have to color the roots as often. I had no idea what I was getting into and I did as much research as I could. I did hit some snags but in the end it worked out beautifully. Here’s what I did (best to my recollection): Step 1: I used L'Oreal Effasol Color Remover, purchased from Sally’s, and left it on 20 minutes and rinsed out. My hair looked pretty good actually, but the color remover had left my hair with a few different shades of reddish, brassy color (due to different hair colors I had used in the past years) along with the gray. Here is where I went wrong: Step 2: I next used Age Beautiful 9WB Lt Warm Blond with a 30 V developer, which turned my hair a really clownish brassy red and yellow. So I bundled up my hair under a scarf and went back to Sally’s. The clerk suggested Wella Toner T14 Pale Ash Blond. So Step 3 was the Wella Toner T14. BTW, I used It’s a 10 Miracle Mask on my hair after the treatments which I think saved my hair from disintegrating since my hair is very fine and very frizzy. But my hair was still more reddish than ash blonde so back to Sally’s. This time I got a Sally’s pro, who advised I get the Age Beautiful 9AA Light Double Ash Blonde with 20V Developer. So Step 4 was Age Beautiful 9AA. That did the trick and removed all of the red from my hair. Now when I do my roots, which I only need to do every 6 weeks, I use Age Beautiful 9A Light Ash Blonde (I don’t need the 9AA since that was to get rid of all the red tones). I also use John Frieda Violet Crush Shampoo and Developer once a week to keep the blonde nice and vibrant. Also, I take Nature’s Truth Hair Skin and Nails Biotin Gummies and I believe this has helped keep my hair in beautiful condition. I love my hair and get compliments all the time. I should have gone blonde 30 years ago!

Dear Lady, I feel the same. I do my own color. I’ve had disastrous experiences at the salons. I part my hair from the crown forward and include the areas in front of my ears. Separate this whole top area out and pin it. You now have the lower area of hair and the upper part. Color the lower area one shade darker than the top. Use two shades. The lighter one on the whole top area that you pinned and the darker shade on the lower part. Then when you comb your hair after you’ve colored it, you will have the dimension you want. I use L’Oréal Technique Crème Gray Coverage. From the beauty supply. You will have a much better color from the beauty supply. I use the developer called Orreos Crème 20. That is the gentlest on the hair. I am not a hairdresser but my friend who was a colorist taught me this. I get compliments all the time. Bless you.

Patty, this video just popped up. I saw your later video of the grey color you went with. It was gorgeous and really brought out your beautiful blue eyes. I went from coloring my hair reddish brown to a yellowish blond. The hair dresser said I could not go light grey or white. I then let it grow out and I have the most beautiful white colored hair. What I really liked about it was that I could wear so many different clothes that I could not before.

Patty, I was in your situation about a year ago. Some women simply look better with a grey color than others. I finally went to a professional in PCB with a super reputation. She said with my light blue eyes and fair skin I needed both dark blonde low lights and a golden blonde highlights. I have had many compliments on my hair since then. An excellent hairdresser can do both the low and highlights at the same time. It looks ok growing out also. I’m not going with the popular “ go grey “ trend because it’s not best for me. Your so pretty that u can do either; however I vote for coloring it again due to your gorgeous skin/ eye combination. Oh color makes fine hair feel thicker too. Good luck sweet Patty.

Put in some low lights (darker color of blonde) to match your ends in the new growth. Then you can gradually put in fewer low lights if you want to grow it out. It grows out easier that way. Has less of a demarcation line. It makes it a little easier to to live with the gray. I prefer chunky low lights.

I'm close to your age. My hair was medium brown, but I always kept it dyed a dark brown. About 2 years ago, I started using a light ash brown color. My white hair kept coming in too fast. Everybody kept telling me to just let it go gray. I tried, but I couldn't stand the looks of it. I bleached it myself. Now it's a beautiful ultra light ash blonde, almost platinum. I took about 2 months to do it. First going strawberry blonde, then medium blonde. Now it seems to get lighter every time I wash it. I wouldn't advise anyone to do what I did, but I'm glad I didn't listen to everyone else, and did it my way.

I think the brightening of a blonde is a lifter for older folks like me. I loved the way you looked in the Loreal Blondissimes. If you're going grey you will need to make it pretty white to contrast your face more. Just my 2 cents.

You look good either way. In a video last year, your hair had grown out a good bit and what I saw was a lot of natural color and I thought that it complimented your skin very nicely. I am on the fence about going natural in the future. I am about to turn 60 and my hair is about 1/2 white and some light gray in the back, so much that I can color it blonde easily and have been using a light ash blonde color. I have been a brunette most of my life. Taking care of my mom, who colored her hair till she became ill, I see the how the texture changes. So until I am unable to, I will probably always color it maybe switching to a silver color somewhere down the road.

Rinsed color off while still wearing cap .
So happy with results .i like multi colored hair too.😊
Anyway you chose , you still look GOOD!!!❤

I love the Age Perfect 4-in-1 L'Oreal balm (older video). It's so easy to apply. Thank you

When I grew out my color I had my stylist pull it through a cap to bleach it. I did that twice during the grow out process. The result was a frosted look without a harsh line between the dyed hair and the new growth. I’ve never missed coloring and love my natural color.

Hi Emile…I did that way back when I was still coloring my hair…that may be a good solution for me again. Oh why can’t this aging thing be easy LOL…patti

It took me just over 1 1/2 years grow my hair out. It could have gone faster but I refused to cut my hair short. I am happy that I did it! I used to be a hairdresser so I colored my own hair.
