I'm glad it worked out for you, Pattie. My ENT doctor told me my MRI result showed a non-cancerous brain tumor on the ear canal (acoustic schwannoma). He said it could be removed w/brain surg, or, radiation to shrink it. I asked him: if it was you or a loved one, what would you do? He didn't hesitate: "I'd hv it removed asap." I went home and waited a few days to get over the shock. Then I called a famous Boston hospital, & made an appt w/ a specialist, to get a 2nd opinion. His advice was, " It's benign, it's vy slow growing, and at your age (60), you may even outlive it. Brain surg will hv serious side effects. Radiation will only shrink it, but it'll still be there, & it has side effects, too. I think you shd just get an annual MRI to see if it's growing." I'm so grateful for that 2nd opinion! So far, so good 🙂.

Im working on a 3rd opinion on my eye cataract. A brilliant eye surgeon made my other eye blind after surgery for a detaching retina 18 yrs ago. I would not do well blind in both eyes at 71.

Just knowing that someone cares about how they look, makes me realize that I am not alone. Plus, I am so happy that you are doing great. I went thru surgery, and ended up needing an ostomy bag! Believe it or not, I am happy that I went thru it, and life is good!!
Pattie, when I had my hall bladder removed, I went in with a full face of makeup. I said just in case I don’t wake up, I’ll be already made up! The doctor and nurses cracked up!! Good to see you,!

I love that, I’ve had a few procedures under anaesthesia, and I always had to take my mascara off 😮 I have blonde eye lashes, at 77 I’m over that now 😂
I've had so many surgeries and all of them have been NO make up or lotions. Those monitors have to stick.

So glad you questioned the doctors decision. If you had gone by his decision without questioning him than you would have lost a third of your colon. Thank God you went by what you felt was right. Good for you.

I happened to stumble upon your website and watched makeup being applied but the thing that got my attention was the growth within your body and how important colonoscopies are. As I listened to your story whi ch involved your thought process on what would be the right thing to you I couldn't help but feel the same way you did in your decision making. God Bless everyone! I'm so happy your story turned out well. The major point I feel you made with me is that you have to be your own best advocate. It is wise to question recommendations made by professionals. I think if you hadn't questioned the surgeon, you might have lost 1/3 of your colon. Having had the other doctor's opinions and imput did matter in the long run. I have found myself in a similar position with asking the question, "What would you do if it were your mother or loved one?" It saved my loved one undue surgical intervention and added to the quality of life. And yes, sometimes it is better to do nothing. From personal experience I do know this to be an option that should be considered wisely. Bravo!
Patti thanks for sharing and so glad you got good results. My sister was told 2 weeks before Christmas she had stage 4 cancer. rushed to surgery and long story short she was given 6 months. They will not do any treatment, too far gone. Please pray for my sister and my family. Love you Patti and pray for you.

Patty, I am so happy you are OK. I for years after my mother died from colon cancer, I would tell my son to get. a test. He would ignore my plea. He passed from colon cancer 3 year ago (50 yr old) I am hoping that everyone who watches this gets the test and their loved ones to do so too. I am sitting here crying watching you and realize how strong you are and that old age is a nightmare that never stops till you no longer exist.
I lost my mother and best friend to colon cancer. She was 87 and had never had a colonoscopy, but the doctor suggested that it was time. She was anemic so let’s take this off the table. When they went in they perforated the bowel so she needed immediate surgery and they found out it was cancer and it had spread everywhere. My sister and I cared for mom her last months of her life.
I’m so happy you had a good outcome to your surgery and never put off a colonoscopy. I’m 72 and because my mother passed from colon cancer my brother’s and sister are checked every few years.🥰🇨🇦

Glad u had it done. I had 4 stage colon n liver cancer 8 yrs ago. By the Grace of God I servived. Now I'm going through chemo n radiation. Cancer came bk. Thank God its in a lumph node outside my colon an where able to have radiation. Waiting on results now.

I believe the Colonguard test does not tell you if you have polyps. If you have polyps and they go undetected they will eventually become malignant.

I have always kept up with mine- colonoscopies. However I know many friends that don’t just because of the prep. As nasty as the prep is, it can save your life and when you look at it that way it’s not so nasty. Thank you so much for sharing your story as this is a subject that too many people are embarrassed discussing- even with their doctor. Thank you for talking about the importance. It’s not embarrassing- and anyone who is embarrassed by it let me ask you: “Wouldn’t you rather be embarrassed than dead?” That’s exactly what it could boil down to. My baby sister & bf for 80 years. Similar story, but she did have to wear the bag. I had prayed so hard that the "mass" wasn't cancer...it wasn't. She went for the repair surgery and I totally understand that need. However, she had problems following the surgery and she is in Heaven. I miss her beyond words! I had stage IV throat cancer in 2001. I speak with a voice prostheses, and while I am not "normal," I still enjoy life at 82. Thank God and may He continue to bless you. Bon voyage!
Patty, I applaud you for being on your toes with asking the questions and pursuing the right answer. My husband is your age and we have been going through some of the same issues and more with other parts of his body. I always take notes and go with him to make sure we know everything the doctors have told us. I would of made the same decision you did and not have one regret. I have taken care of a lot of people in my life and learned to never leave them in the hospital alone and as they do not comprehend all that is being done and told to them and they need an advocate. I'm so glad you decided to share your story! Thank you! You have confirmed my thinking on how to handle my healthcare. In the past few years (I'm 60) I have been noticing how much we really need to question a doctors advice and do as much research as possible. Sometimes doctors don't explain stuff in enough detail to make you understand why they say what they say, and sometimes i think they are just going thru the motions. MANY do NOT keep up to date on their reading and just go with what the pharmaceutical company's give them for treatment, I have learned that big pharma does not want us to be healthy! If we are healthy they don't make money, right? I'm now finding myself trying to reverse osteoporosis as well as aging skin due to bad advice about my diet and hormone replacement therapy. Great. Video and I-think the best advice you can give anyone is to be your own advocate and insist on more than one opinion, and do as you did and say no when they insist that you need more surgery than what you were told. Good job on being smart and learning all about what your options were. Most people sadly just think of doctors as God and do what they say without questioning their decision. I realize this was a year ago, but I think you made the right decision as lipomas can become invasive and thread through tissues causing irritations and problems. I hope you’ve regained your strength and appetite and are enjoying your new home planning. Wishing you the best.

You did the best thing-you were your own best advocate. Many people, unfortunately, don’t ask questions and don’t stick up for themselves.
Thank you for sharing your experience, and why you chose the option that you did. Truthfully if that doctors did not have a conference with the other doctors or did not order additional testing, I would have found a new doctor. It was good you and your husband protested about what you were expecting to happen. That doctors listen to you and got the complete information to recommed the correct surgery. My physician order some test for me and I had put them off. I just turned 68, and I need this to live a healthy senior life. May God bless you and watch over you. ❤️

I am 58 and have never had one because of a bad experience having one at 20 years of age back In a military hospital where I am lucky they didn't kill me. I din't haven't any anesthesia, no twilight sleep, no valium not even a rag to bite down on. So I sat up in medias res due to the sheer pain. It traumatized me and I haven't done any testing since. A lot has changed since then for the better so I am going to schedule it immediately. Thank you!

I had the same experience when I was 21 at the Mayo Clinic. I always said I would die before I have another one.
You are a brave lady! I still cannot walk much. The second surgery took more of my energy than the first. However, I know the Lord had a purpose for keeping me alive.
I take grape seed and olive leaf, selinium, vitamin C. I feel awesome! After my surgery, I didn't feel like eating but I drank warm-hot chicken and beef broth by Swanson's. It gave me strength. Patty, I think you made a wise decision. I had mom and brother die of cancer.. it's an awful way to go. Mother went quick and brother didn't. They received the Lord and were saved, so I will see them again one day. God Bless you, Patty. You have been through so much and your so brave~

My husband died from cancer that was right in that spot where your growth was. He didn’t even know about it until it was way too late. I completely agree that the surgery was worth it for peace of mind. I will tell you that getting your strength back fully after surgery takes a while, at least for me it did even when I was in my early thirties. Took a little longer when I was in my late 60s.
Ginny Burley it often takes so much longer than we think, doesn’t it ? I was in my early 40s when I had two separate laparoscopic procedures to remove recurring blood-filled cysts in both of my ovaries as well as endometriosis all over me, and I was maybe about 46 when I finally had to have a complete hysterectomy, including both ovaries taken out. Then I had knee surgery just a couple of years after that. I bounced back quickly from all of those (although knee surgery took a bit longer), but I have a distinct feeling now that I’m almost 60 yrs old, any kind of surgery I may have from here on (which I do need - I’ve put off knee surgery on my other knee for far too many yrs now), I know that recovery will likely take longer than it did back when I was in my 40s or even just 50. It’s a weird feeling bc I’m sure I’m just like everyone else in that I don’t always FEEL old, but unfortunately my body literally IS “old” (relatively speaking!) and will obviously only get older ..... so my recovery times after surgery (or after illness in general) will likely take longer. But hey, as long as we are able to fully recover, that’s the most important part, right ?? We’re mighty fortunate in that regard ..🙏🏼
I'm a mother and wife.I never take time for myself. It took a head-on collision for me to find out that I had stage 3 ovarian cancer. We women need to take better care of ourselves. After a total hysterectomy and 8 rounds of chemo I am cancer-free

I have one and hydrosalpinx on tube.im going thro menopause and said to a dr will the cyst or cysts not be causing bad sweats and they said they didn't know.lve been having day or night or any time soaking sweats.id been on HRT patch 15 years and had to stop it due to high cholesterol after 15 they put me back on and i bled so i was given no bleed one but i didnt persevere. Now im getting menopause tablets.could it be the cyst causing sweats.l get IV magnesium as days iam soaking .the sweats start on head and soak my clothes.none underarms or hands.x
@@elliegoldie6140 I’m not really sure what might happen (or what you might regularly experience) when ovarian cysts are left untreated. Mine were taken out and I didn’t have them in while I was experiencing menopause. I had recurring huge blood-filled cysts in one ovary and thousands of recurring smaller ones in the other ovary. My only symptoms (in my early 40’s) were heavy bleeding and breakthrough bleeding in between my periods. I knew something wasn’t quite right & that’s what caused me to go to the dr to begin with. And it’s when they found the cysts. Like I mentioned, the cysts were at first just removed laparoscopically in a procedure but were back again in full force just months later. That’s when I was told I’d need to have both ovaries completely removed (bc cysts would just continue to grow and cause all kinds of problems otherwise) along with my uterus, tubes, cervix, etc (which were covered with endometriosis). So, because I didn’t live with the cysts for an extended period of time beyond my mid 40’s (and hadn’t experienced any menopause symptoms up until that point), I really can’t say what it feels like to experience cysts in menopause, or how they might affect or even possibly exacerbate menopause symptoms. I don’t know about that, I’m sorry. IF you’re not happy with how your doctor is handling your health issues though, I’d strongly encourage you to find another doctor. Menopause is (or at least certainly can be) tough to go through, even under the very best of circumstances. It’s worth the extra effort to find a good doctor who’ll really listen and pay attention to your individual health concerns ..
@@elliegoldie6140 I would get another medical opinion from at least one other MD, not in the same medical practice or admitting to the same hospital. If that opinion differs, I'd get a third (best two out of three). Are you going to a gynecologist, primary care, or surgeon? They will all probably have a different opinion.
MDs do sometimes talk to each other,, especially if they are in the same practice and can pull up the other MDs notes. They do not like to disagree as it opens them up for having to testify in a malpractice lawsuit against their colleague.
With my ovarian cysts, I was told for years there was nothing wrong except my diet and I needed to eat more fiber. They even prescribed high-fiber biscuits at an outrageous price! My primary care MD didn't want to over rule the OB/Gyn. Until, that is, one of they cysts abscessed and burst and I was in Intensive Care.
My insurance wouldn't let me go to another hospital where these two didn't practice and i couldn't afford to self-pay. Needless to say, I had surgery and a very bad recovery. This left me unable to have children.
I worked in healthcare for 20+ years and come from a large family of medical professionals. I really suggest you go out of town, if possible, and get another opinion. Be sure to take someone with you into the appointment to "take notes." That almost always sharpens the MDs attention as a witness is something to be feared if something goes wrong.
I'd almost be willing to bet that Patty's surgeon was reading someone else's chart when he started talking about a colostomy. Either that, or he may perform unnecessary surgery to get higher Medicare reimbursement. If all three people in a small cul-de-sac all had (proposed) major surgery I'd be interested in a medical records and pathology review of need.

Patti: I just saw this one (I'm somewhat new to your channel) and I want to thank and commend you for talking about your brush with colon cancer. You cannot estimate how much good this kind of message does for your audience. A lot of women think of colon cancer as a "man's disease" but it certainly is not. Early detection is so very important and being a cancer survivor (twice) myself, I talk about my experience with people when I can to reassure others that the regular tests are so important and that a positive diagnosis is not necessarily a death sentence. Usually it is NOT, especially when there's early detection. I admire you and thank you so very much for sharing your very personal experience with us.

I’m so glad you are ok , I lost 3 siblings at a really young age , 2 from cancer, (colon and breast)- 1 from a heart attack , and I lost both parents to cancer, I am 65 and have been so good about my mammograms and check ups with the cardiologist, but I have let my colonoscopy lapse , thank you from the bottom of my heart, I’m calling my gastroenterologist tomorrow- God Bless You ( I just started watching you a couple of days ago, I’m so glad) I pray whoever needs to get their colonoscopies done , makes an appointment. 💜

Oh Patti, that must have been so scary. I can't believe no one informed you about your test being positive in a first place and then the shock of the surgeon telling you what they have to do. I loved that you told him "you do what you would do for your mother" I am glad you are feeling better and I wish you a speedy recovery, just take your time and take it easy. Oh Dear Rxstrmom, I’m so glad it was benign it did remind me to go do both a mammogram and a colonoscopy. Think I will skip ColonGuard. I’m glad you were able to get all your doctors to communicate together. I think it might have been better when we just brought our records and scans with us rather than relying on computers, I showed up at Cleveland Clinic thinking they had my full records sent and they hadn’t. It basically wasted all our time including the doctors there and we later had to make the exact same trip again since my illness is rare. My son and husband took time off both times. Sighs. I’m just glad they got it right eventually for you 🤩 Rxstrmom.

Lois Bryant Yes, unfortunately, the more federalized health care becomes, the more this will happen. Docs get PAID based on their attention to their laptop checksheets. They don’t like it but if they leave something off, are inaccurate in any way, they are NOT paid.

My BIL had a tumor in his pancreas, which after 11 hour surgery was determined to be benign. However, the doctors had been watching it and it was growing. He is glad he decided to have it removed as it could have become cancerous or causing other problems. Each situation is different. I'm glad that you made an informed choice and that everything seems to be ok.
Patti,So glad you had the surgery and it was benign. I had the surgery,it was stage 2 cancer, I had 6 months of Chemo.,I'm 6 years cancer free.I begged my husband to have a colonoscopy after my illness,he said NO! Six years later he was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer.He is receiving Chemo., radiation, and than surgery.It's a long haul,and I pray that he will have the great results that I was lucky enough to have.My 2 sons are aware that they are high risk,so they will have to be tested before age 50.Please anyone reading this urge your loved ones to have the colonoscopy, don't waste time,and money on Colo Guard,"Just Do It" ! It doesn't hurt.I'm 66 years old,and I love every day ! Hugs to you ! Cindy
Colonoscopies are so important. I am 70, and I have to have one every other year because of polyps. I believe you made the right decision. Take care!

Patty God has blessed me to recover from Shingles, a fractured left ankle, and 2 heart ablations I'm 75. Not back fully to where I was before all of this.

I'm so glad you've shared your story about this situation! I just turned 70 on Jan 10th, so I related! My husband has always been just like yours very supportive & there to take care of me, as I have for him! (We've been married 52yrs) So that would never be a concern! But we NEED to know what happens in this kind of situation & what kinds of steps, concerns & procedures to consider! How to handle Doctors etc. We need to have heard a story like yours! It means everything to be educated about Health issues so we can actually make good decisions concerning them! Once Again, Thank You! You look good for what you've been thru & it's impressive that you are out walking 2x daily & now walking alone, too! I pray that your total recovery is continual & complete, soon!

You are just so beautiful and inspiring! I'm 63 and never before went out in public or work without makeup. NEVER! Since covid though, and working from hom for almost 2 years now, I have not been wearing any makeup even out in public. You have not only inspired to start wearing makeup again, but have given an impotant lession in being your own advacate with health related issues. In my case, had it not been for me insisting that something was wrong with me (I was 46 at the time), I would not be here today sending this message. I am a survivor of ovarian cancer-stage 3. I am going to keep watching your wonderful videos.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I only recently discovered your channel. I'm hoping that many people who see this will take your advice. I lost a friend to colon cancer in 2020. She was only 48. She didn't trust the doctors' advice because they too had messed up her paperwork. She refused treatment and let the cancer run its course. Her friends and family have been wondering if the treatment would have extended her life, but she wanted to concentrate on her quality of life. She was a great person and the world is a little darker without her in it. I'm so happy that you are doing well and recovering swiftly. Take care.

Hi Patti, I am 85 1/2 years old. I have had colonoscopies every five years because they found polyps about 20 years ago. They were always benign. When I turned 79 I had my last one and they found a couple of benign polyps. They said at that time I wouldn’t be having any more colonoscopies due to my age, I thought at the time am I gonna stop getting polyps the people in my family live to be late 90s and beyond. Anyway, every other year, my doctor would have me do the colorguard test, it always came back normal .This year it came up abnormal or positive as you say. I told my doctor I wanted to take another test as they wanted me to get a colonoscopy right away.
And I thought I wanted to wait but now I think I’ll go ahead and schedule the colonoscopy. It’s so important that we share our experiences, had I not have seen this today I might not have. Thank you Patti, love Barb❤

Now I am so blessed to have found you at four o’clock THIS VERY MORNING. I’ve been very neglectful of my health since my beautiful mother passed away. That was 6 years ago. I have become very fearful of doctors and medical professionals, especially regarding surgery. I have the RA and I’m so tired all the time and there are so many issues with my health because of the autoimmune diseases. Thank you so much for giving me courage and motivation to take better care of myself all the way around.

My dear Patti, I’m so glad to hear you are doing well. Having to deal with a health issue at any age is a terrible thing to deal with. I found out a couple of years ago my kidneys were only at 43% and should be above 60%! I was beside myself since my mom died from kidney disease secondary to uncontrolled hypertension at the age of 74. Also my dad passed at 90 from kidney disease as well. Blood pressure issues also. So where does that leave me? At risk for the above mentioned. Well, I took my health into my own hands and did what was recommended by my kidney doctor of eating right, exercising, lose weight, watch sodium and drinking 8 glasses of 8 oz. of water everyday. Well my next visit I was above the 60 range, which was 3 months later! Bam! I was so proud and so was my doctor. So let me explain that lab work can vary day to day. Im still being followed by a kidney specialist and that is one thing I don’t want Togo through bc my mom was on dialysis. That was terrible for her and I still ache for her God rest her soul. My dad was too far gone for dialysis at 90. Point I’m getting to, not having a colon is much easier to live with than being on dialysis 3X a week. The reason I know is bc my son had to have his removed at the age of 41 I believe. He went through hell trying to keep his colon. He fought so hard and my heart ached for him too. He finally gave in and had it removed come to find out he had Crohn’s disease! It was terrible but the good thing is, he’s doing soooo good now and without a bag! He has a J pouch and leading an almost normal life. He has to take a med once a month but better than being dialyzed 3X a week. The way he found out was he ate some Chinese food and got sick and had to go to the ER. A colonoscopy was done at a later date and found that his colon was extremely inflamed. We took him to Hopkins and tried his best to avoid a colectomy but later had to. There are a lot of people that are in the same boat and or have no colon. It’s amazing.
We have to take care of ourselves bc we’re our only advocate. God bless you
So many people have some type of health issue and we’re afraid to face the truth about it. Bottom line is, take care of it ASAP but I’m a true believer in second opinions. Being an RN, I’ve seen a few things.

My stepdaughter was recently diagnosed with Crohn's; she has had 3 infusion's (at $7,000 each) and still is not able to get through a week feeling well or normal. She is getting married today, and while I'm so excited for her new beginnings, I am so very worried about her too. I believe experience and sharing wisdom is just as good as any doctor and I look forward to learning more if you are willing to share. TIA

You absolutely made the right decision doing what u did. Otherwise you would have had a little black cloud hanging over you & every time you had a little discomfort or tummy ache you’d be wondering. Now it’s over with & you got good news. I was one of those people who never went for my colonoscopy. I felt cancer didn’t run in my family so I didn’t need to worry about it. So at 64 my doctor suggested my husband & i do the cologuard test. My husband’s came back negative but mine was positive. My doctor called me immediately & referred me to a gastroenterologist to set up a colonoscopy. And he told me this was not negotiable. This had to be done ASAP. And I’m glad I did because they found 3 large polyps & one was pre cancerous. So I’ll be having another colonoscopy done around my 67th Birthday. If it hadn’t been for that cologuard test I’m certain I would have never gone for a colonoscopy. Very foolish on my part. But because that cologuard was so much less invasive to me I took it. The gastroenterologist said it saved my life. And I am very grateful for the technology. I’m glad you’re back & on the mend. Don’t rush it & expect too much of yourself. Take care & God bless. 🙏🏻💕
