My mother has several health issues, and she's been about 70 lbs overweight for years as she's a serious foodie. For health reasons, she decided to adopt a healthier diet limiting white flour and sugar. She incorporates one soup meal per day. Over the last few months she lost 40 lbs and feels much better as all of her numbers have come down, and she's not done yet. Mom will be 94 in January.

Patti, to reach your age with no health issues is an amazing feat in itself. Not many can say that. Being vegetarian means you have to really eat well 'cause the meat substitutes are usually junk (high in sodium, carrageenan etc.), so supplements and wise veg choices etc. are a necessity. I've seen many an overweight vegetarian and it's likely that they are indulging in junk food..

About 10 years ago, (I am 76) my cholesterol was deemed too high and I was put on 20 mg of a statin. Within 20 minutes of taking the first pill, I felt like I was crashing to earth in the elevator that had lost its cables. I called my cardiologist and told her and she reluctantly switched me to 5 mg. After four weeks on the 5 mg dosage, I could hardly climb the stairs, all of my joints and muscles ached. My GP suggested that I go off the statins for a week to see what would happen. I almost immediately resumed my normal life, climbing stairs without trouble, getting off the toilet without trouble, so I went back on the statin for the last week, and then had my cholesterol tested. Yes it was down! But! I asked my GP to prescribe another form of Stattin and she told me that if I wanted to live a good life, then I should watch my diet. become a vegetarian which I could not do …..but I do watch what I eat …..no processed foods, Lots of fruits and vegetables, small portions of meat, chicken and fish. My life is good, and I do not have to take medication of any kind. By the way I forgot to mention that my father died of a heart attack at the age of 49 and my brother had a triple bypass at the age of 61 so it does definitely run in my family. No, I would like to lose the 7 pounds I have gained during Covid and so I guess I’m going to have to give up sugar. I like your idea of promising myself one day at a time!

No statins here, I had a major blockage and they put a stent in. Everyone is different and vegetarianism didn't work for me but Carnovire did. I'm down 80 lbs and no longer on any meds of any kind. I was also a type 2 diabetic, and all my blood work is now normal, and I no longer have to take insulin. Patti, you do what works for you, and ignore the haters and their internet medical degrees. :)

I disagree with you. The fact that Patti has turned her results around without meds is an important fact that needs to be discussed. Too many people jump at taking medication the minute a doctor introduces it to them. The problem today is people don't want to put in the effort to resolve issues because it's so much easier to take a pill. However, those pills start to cause other issues. I watched my father suffer for 10 years before he died because the meds made him miserable. On the other hand, my mother refuses to take any medication and is in her late 90s and still healthy. She eats lots of raw foods instead of meds. I think that says something. I'm in my mid 70s, and also do not take medications and doing fine.

@@thespear4083 poison, really? Where’s the data to support your statement? Oh let me guess you read it in some liberal newspaper. Fact of the matter is that statins will remodel plaque that has accumulated in your arteries. This process of plaque deposition starts around the age of 12 thanks to our all American poor diet of fast food and processed food. Think about this….you are born with an LDL of 25. It doesn’t stay that way for too long again thanks to the American diet and bad genes. So you lost 13 lbs. Bravo, unfortunately that doesn’t mitigate a life time of plaque accumulation. Then again, if you made it to 80 with your high cholesterol it’s really too late to derive much benefit by adding a statin now. Just hope your plaque are nice and solid like concrete so they don’t break off and embolize to your brain, heart or lungs. Let this be a lesson, check your cholesterol levels early in life and get on statins as soon as your LDL is over 70.

Timely this video. I'm 69 years old and vegan. Over the past year or so, and I'm not sure why; probably because I have a good blood pressure monitor, I decided to go ahead and do a reading for the hell of it. It was higher than normal. Last July I started tracking it every day and the numbers were in the 130's and 140's even the odd 157 and instead of taking good note, I just kept tracking and living my normal life. I wasn't fully aware of what levels Stage 1 and 2 hypertension were. My bad, I should have looked that up. I thought that because I was vegan, under 130 pounds and fairly good with light workouts, I didn't really have to worry. What I didn't realize was that I was too inactive, ate too many processed foods, including potato chips (often), all which contain high levels of salt. Add to that, I didn't drink enough water. All that changed when I got off the plane in Ontario to visit my daughter, and discovered my BP had soared to 190. My daughter took me right to the hospital. By the time I got to triage, my BP read 201! Blood was taken to ensure my kidneys were not the problem, which thankfully they were not and I was given a prescription. I wasn't too happy with how quickly that was taking the readings downward so I decided to look up: 1) the biggest causes of high BP and the 2) the best things you can do to fix it. I cut out all added sodium from my diet instantly and counted up any that showed up in the foods I ate, determined to keep the count below the recommended amount of 1200 gr. I started drinking a lot of water in the day, added fibre rich whole foods and cut out most all of the processed foods. I started walking, every day for 40 minutes. We have bears here back on Vancouver Island so I decided to get a desk treadmill that I could walk on while watching RUclips videos. Very quickly my BP readings were in the 120's and below where they should be. I just want to point out here, that I felt absolutely FINE throughout this entire episode. No ill effects physically AT ALL! When they call this the silent killer they do so for very good reason. People die every day from this and I'm sure a lot of the stats point to high BP as the prime culprit. Gladly I was able to stop the meds a week after I got home and tracking this, I seem to be doing really well. Thanks for this video. Everyone should be tracking BP for sure!

Dropping refined carbs will drop ur insulin production and allow your kidneys to process salt again. You will then lose excess water and your hypertension will go. Its not always as simple as blaming Salt.

Thank you for this post. At 72, I don't take any medications either. I've followed a Mediterranean eating plan for most of my adult life with years of no animal products thrown in. Until a serious bout of depression earlier this year, I walked almost every day and maintained my weight easily. But like you, I grew tired of it all and allowed myself to eat whatever I wanted and didn't walk. In October, I decided to be kinder to myself, and I started walking again (love those endorphins!) and stopped eating most processed foods, and went back to a Mediterranean style of eating, letting go of 12 lbs of excess weight. Now, all I have to do is find a new doctor. Living in SW FL, I'm finding this much more difficult than losing weight. Your post has encouraged me to persevere and find the right practitioner for me, and I'm hopeful I'll succeed.

I gave up sugar and most carbs 3 years ago at age 69. I wish I had done it years ago. Like you, I don't take any meds, not even aspirin. But my weight, A1c, blood pressure and lipid profile was horrible. Being a vegan you may not believe me when I say since eating a high fat high protein diet (eggs, meats fish) ALL of my labs are now within normal , healthy limits. The first two months were difficult until I became fat adapted. In the absence of instant glucose from sugars and carbs your body is forced to burn its own fat. I am now at my ideal weight and eat as much acceptable food as I want. My brain works better and I am no longer worried about stroking out. It is never too late.

Thanks for sharing. It’s often in the little things; small changes. I am not a vegetarian, but have recently cut out my beloved milk, sugar, cut way down on butter, and started reintroducing daily fruit and vegetable shakes. Doing these simple things alone, has enabled me to lose 10 pounds in the past month. Now, that was not my goal, it just happened that quickly. But, now, it is levelling off to about 1 1/2 lbs. a week (my goal). I have had a heart attack, do have high blood pressure, (but normal cholesterol) for which I have taken a long list of medications, since I was 40. I am now 63, and want to try to not have to take so many drugs, and or at least cut the doses. Like you, I like to do a lot of research in respect to my health, rather than relying solely on a medical professional’s opinion. This comes from the experience of a doctor not handling a medical condition of mine properly in the past. As a patient, it is good to advocate for yourself.

I was as adamant as anyone could possibly be about not taking statins until my doc went over all the risk factors that I fell under so I finally relented. I have been on Rosuvastatin for several years now and have not noticed ANY difference in the way I feel or experienced any side effects. I think the one thing that made the decision for me was the high risk of stroke. I would rather have a heart attack and die than to have a stroke as I have seen the aftermath of that. I agree it must be a personal decision for each person and we are so lucky today that we have the many resources to do our own research in order to make the best decision for us.

I have like you done so much research about statins . At present I don’t take any medication and I will not take statins or blood pressure tables. I take a 30 min walk a day and take no processed food. This life style that I do is only in the last 6 months. My doctor decided I should have a blood test . The results are in and I’m so happy that my cholesterol was 3.6 and everything was normal. With a little effort it can change so many things. Thank you for your videos and I enjoy following you.

Patti, I am with you, I changed my lifestyle to plant based. I was only 46 I was on so many medications. I have gone off almost all except my thyroid medication. I did this lifestyle change after meeting with a PA who works in the local trauma hospital emergency department. She opened a wellness center part time to help people treat the cause of the problem than to get out on a RX to only stop symptoms. I stand with you 💯. I know when I eat something my body doesn’t like, my energy plummets, I will also get a of inflammation. Do what is best for you!! You know your body better than anyone else. ❤❤

I took myself off a high dose of statin , two nasty blood pressure meds, and more by making lifestyle changes . I also have a family history of cardiovascular disease. I DO eat meat, eggs, fish, and really limit dairy and fruit. I have digestive issues which make eating kind of complicated but O can do it! And so can you! Please share your meal ideas! ❤

Thank you for sharing your experience with us Patti, I’m 61 and have been battling the high triglycerides mainly and high cholesterol since I was in my 30’s . But only very minimal. The past few years with so much sadness and stress in my life my momma passing and my kitty Bella my best friend passing and I have PTSD REALLY bad I am a sugar addict not so much salty chips I don’t like salt to much but it was the sugar., cakes , cookies , oh and chocolate. So I did the same thing you did and completely stopped sugar, pasta, white bread etc. I lost 25 lbs and went into have my annual bloodwork and all my cholesterol numbers were normal and my triglycerides went down 110 points. I felt great , but unfortunately with all the sadness and stress I picked up those sugary treats way to often so I know I need to cut down so I don’t ruin all the hard work I did to drop those numbers. And I did gain some weight rite back UGGGGG. So now I’ll save my treats for special occasions. I do eat low sugar oat meal often with chia seed and walnuts and almonds. And blueberries. I love my Decafe coffee and use Stevia, it’s a natural sugary substitute and just fish or chicken, broccoli 🥦 lots of it. Lol Cheerios and unsweetened almond milk. Sugar free greek yogurt. Roasted Fresh garlic with my meals . Berries are great for you too. And a small banana in my cereal or oat meal. Also have organic almond butter. So any who I need to get back on the great track I was on . And like you I did have a treat now and then. I’m saving my treats now for the holidays. Oh and I have become a label reader. I look at saturated fat and cholesterol. Try to stay with foods that say zero saturated and zero cholesterol . I can chat about this all day with you but just wanted to share. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤lots of peace love and light

Have you considered fasting, only eating 2 meals daily during a window of time within a 6 hour period. Plus do not eat anything after 6pm every single day, and don't start eating before 10am, if you reduce your calories to 1000 daily, you'll lose weight.

Pattie congrats on the weigh loss. Life gets interesting as we get older doesn't it? I remember each time I've gotten news I wasn't happy about from the doctor. Every year seems to bring some unwelcome news. Some I can't do much about some I can. Funny tip. We went on a cruise to the Mediterranean 2 weeks ago. People asked if we gained the usual cruise weight. We laughed and explained that with the constant walking up and down what seemed like a thousand stairs and walking all over we both lost weight. So walking does work for weight loss folks. I'm back to a less strenuous life style which is kinder to my 70 year old arthritic and worn out bones. And back to watching my eating choices too. But it can be done.

My mother died at 46 and her brother died at 39 and their father was 72, all died of a blood hemorrhage. My mental and physical health was better than theirs. My sister, ten yrs older, died in her eighties. My mother’s mother, reared me from the time I was born, she died at 84. I think we all have our own journey to live and path to CHOOSE. I believe that choice can add to or shave off years drastically. Choose an environment that makes your life fulfilled ...happy, clam, loved wise and that is better than ANY pill. Live without guilt and anger, give your heart to those who deserve it and be kind. Oh and learn to forgive and do your best. Those things don’t come in a bottle. Think pretty thoughts. Be happy for others. You got it ❤❤❤...skip that Drs pill. LOVE PAM

I am 65 yrs old, and have been a vegetarian since 1992, so I highly recommend vegetarian diet, but I am also a sugar-holic. That is my hardest obstacle to control, but I have been known to do it for a short term. I know I need to cut the sugar out again to lose the ten pounds that seem to stick on me, but it is hard, because I also deal with depression. Eating sweets is a way I get through tough times, even though that is not logical. There is just something about being able to make yourself "happy", even if only for a few minutes, with something you like to eat. I am not overweight, but due to menopause, the abdomen is like velcro with the fat, so that is where I show it first. I think it is great that you find your healthier diet easy to do! I know eating carbs makes you crave more carbs, so it is hard to cut them out, at first, but it does get easier after you detox a bit. This video is now a year old, so I don't know what decision you made about the prescription, but my own mom is 93 years old, and still doesn't take any prescription meds. I am a firm believer in staying active to stay healthy, and she is the poster child for that! She is still ballroom dancing, and she didn't start doing that until she was 91 years old! She is amazing! Like you said...it is YOUR decision to make...but keep educating yourself on the natural options you have out there, and don't let the medical profession, however well meaning they are, talk you into doing something you don't want to do. I am a pharmacist, but I am not a big believer in loading up on drugs. That is how medicine is practiced now, though...they do not cure anything, they just treat symptoms. One drug leads to another, and boom...you need a suitcase to carry all your prescriptions. Best thing to do is educate yourself to the nth degree! That will help you make the best informed decisions about your health.

I actually stumbled on your blog this morning and so glad that I did! I am 70 and had a wake up call like this on my semi-annual check up this week. I have unfortunately inherited high cholesterol from my mother. I am fairly thin and already walk 5 times a week , yet my cholesterol has reached an all time high. My family practitioner wants to put me on a statin as well and having been on one years ago, I refused. My mother has always taken statins and now has dementia. When I tried them my feet and legs hurt so bad I could barely walk and this was when I was only 50! I have never considered going directly to a cardiologist but after hearing your story I plan on finding one to hopefully get a second opinion with guidance and have also been researching for a heart healthy and anti inflammatory diet. I realize That too much sugar in my diet is probably a huge contributor to my current state. Good luck with your plan and thanks for the inspiration I have needed!❤

It's been good to listen to your talk today because I'm 75 this August and I need to get myself back to being me and lose weight. I was always fairly slim throughout my life but now have put so much weight on it seems so thank you because you have set me off on a new me for 2023, yes it is very easy to just let things slide because like you I'm vegetarian. ❤️🌹

Congratulations on finding out something wasn't right and doing something about it instead of ignoring it. It's not always easy, but you are doing it!
Holidays have changed for all of us I think - I say for the better!! LOL
I am selfish in that I put nothing ahead of my health.
Thanks for sharing and for the awareness. I am sure you are helping a lot of us...

So inspiring, especially your getting more energy. I really want to stop sugar and salty snacks but pushing through is hard.

This is very helpful. Thank you for being so honest and I know it will help a lot of people. I am going to think twice about reaching for a bag of potato chips at the store. I indulge myself way too much when it comes to food. I always think if one is good, then two will be better and I really do need to discipline myself more.

I take a low dose of Statin generic Crestor 5 mg has hot problems running my family and I don't have any problem with cholesterol.
I'm not into salty chips or cookies or cakes or candies never have been just once in awhile but I think that's because sugar diabetes is on all sides of my family and I've never been someone that eats ice cream and cookies and salty potato chips because the salt is not good for us.
Great work you're so lucky to have a husband that cooks every single meal that's a blessing in itself.

I’ve only just stumbled onto your channel. I’m only 67 and I just had an appt with my doctor and was told my cholesterol was up. I teach aquafit but I’ve also recently gained about 16 lbs without really changing my lifestyle. I love your stories, I find you story about Jim so sweet! I’m still married to my high school sweetheart now 44 years strong. I am now going down the rabbit hole looking into how I can lower my cholesterol because I also don’t want to go on statins. I’d love to see a sample menu. I’m not a vegetarian but I do eat more fruits and vegetables than meat. Stay strong and god bless you! You are beautiful. There is hope for some of us.

Thank you Patti for bringing this subject to our attention. And glad you found a doctor that’s really thorough in helping you on your road for change. I’m 77 and my mom passed years ago at this same age. So its in the genes you might say to be wise about slacking off on sugars and other sweets. I’m not a vegetarian but don’t eat a lot of meat yet will eat chicken and I feel guilty doing so just because my inner voice says not to. I’d love to get a nutritionist to help me make some simple meal plans. I’ve heard that taking ala Vera is good for you too. A few teaspoons a day is to cut the cholesterol down considerably. And do you take time to meditate? I make it a point to meditate every morning. It helps. Thank you again. 🤗

Patti I so enjoyed this video. I'm 61. When I was 60 I had high cholesterol for the first time. I wanted to try to adjust my diet first before using medication. I cut back on high fat items (which also helped me because I had my gallbladder removed), plus eliminated as much processed food as possible. I dropped my numbers by 50 and lost 18 lbs. A year later I have started to slack off a bit, and I can definitely feel it. Watching your video gave me the incentive to get back on track - thank you!
