I absolutely agree with you. I look around at the “stuff” that’s in my house and it sickens me at how much I’ve spent over the years on dresses, makeup and shoes. I could start my own makeup counter with all the makeup I have. If I don’t buy any more makeup for three years I’ll never use it all. My closet has dresses with tags on them. I can’t tell you how much money I have spent over the years and how much guilt and disgust I have for what I have wasted. You said everything that I have thought about. If I die today. My daughter doesn’t want those clothes and all that makeup and potions. What could I have done more for my children with all the money I have wasted. A change in myself needs to happen. Thank you for speaking out and voicing exactly how I feel.

I'm just waiting to croak. The country is not a good place to live anymore. I don't care about my old self anymore. Gray hair, wrinkled neck, don't want a husband, don't care about shopping, washing my face, taking a bath, washing my hair. I can just stay in the bed all day and wait for the death angel. Don't shop anymore, don't have a dog anymore, dont clean the house, gave most of my furniture away. My car is 20 years old and has very few miles on it. I dont' go anywhere anymore. Rarely go to the doctor, have thrown everything away, clothes, shoes, furniture, makeup and junk. Empty house. Don't have the desire to paint. Yes, I know how you feel. Old and almost dead. I don't talk to anybody if I can help it. I don't answer the phone or go to the door. I check the mail when it gets dark outside.

Hi, I was the same way. I used to buy lots of stuff, my neighbor made a comment once of how many shopping bags I always carried home. At the time I was also going through a kind of depression and I believe loneliness was part of the shopping therapy. I used to feel so happy and excited about buying stuff I just didn’t use or care for. Most of the stuff I gave away. 12 years ago I stopped the insanity, I live a comfortable but minimalist life and I feel happier.

Patti, you probably won't see this since it's a year old, but here goes anyway! Crafts...oh my. When we built this house, we didn't need the double garage since we had a full basement. Hubs asked me if I wanted the 24 x 24 space for my sewing /craft room...well, yeeeah, I do! I am a quilter, had a quilt shop and brought all the bolts of fabric that were left, home. Oh my, what a job. I also have a longer quilt machine, and all the threads, along with ribbon...lots of ribbon and buttons, scrapbook supplies, Cameo vinyl machine and supplies, paint, canvases, beads, seasonal "stuff" for mailbox decs, and on and on. It didn't take long for my huge room was no longer huge!
I collect bunnies, and it made it so easy for family, etc to buy gifts. Lladro bunnies, Herend , waterford, dept 56, etc. Love redware plates, depression glass, any glassware. I HAD TO STOP! We have my Grandmother's things, my Mom and husband's Mom's. It is almost obscene the amount of things that my 3 boys and Dil's, grandchildren will not want. My wedding silver, Crystal, China, that people don't even use anymore. Whatever am I going to do???
Love you so much and love your videos!❤So wise! We are same age. 80 in a couple of months.

You are telling my life story regarding skin care. I worked in Pittsburgh, across from Joseoh Horne Co, every lunch time I would go to the Estee Alauder counter and buy the Renutrive line which was the most expensive, and I was 21 years old! I'm now 82 and continue to buy. I am drawn to it but get tired of trying new, improved stuff. Nothing makes a difference! I have good skin, at 82 it can't get better. I could go on and on, but you know exactly what I mean. I have too many clothes, makeup, etc. I

Patti, what can I say that hasn't already been said? It's worth saying though that I love your emotional honesty & that you speak just as though you were talking to each of us personally over a cup of coffee. I've only seen a handful of your other videos, but some priceless advice here. These are my thoughts:
Yes, age (or life's mileage/journey) does make most of us turn away from possessions to a simpler life. Keeping it simple or quite basic frees you in many ways - a lot being the physical toll of an unnecessary cycle of buy, take care of, get rid of, then repeat to replace & well, repeat! My body doesn't need the expenditure any more than my pocket.
I have never been to a nail or lash salon & realised years ago that basic products like Simple, Oil of Olay (SPF 15), Vaseline body lotions, Nivea etc do as good if not a better job than hyper-priced products. (Still over-stocked though!) An easy consistent skincare routine with a sunscreen and you've cracked it! (Though I am gradually swapping to vegan where possible. Decluttering with a conscience.)
I have spent a lifetime over-shopping on cosmetics, books, clothes, shoes, ornaments. I am now decluttering & boy, is it a hard job both physically & in terms of decision to part, but nothing is surer than if I carry on, I will get there in the end.
It is somewhat complicated by the need to shed smaller & buy bigger clothes due to lockdown weight gain, but I am what I am. I am not keeping 'for when I get slim again' clothes, nor buying for a lifestyle I don't live, like clothes for occasions I rarely if ever go to.
Some letting go is easy. Higher heels in all colours & styles went years ago with an arthritic foot! Now it's flat & what fits. Simples!
And I'm not buying things that promise to make me a better person. We are sold things, esp women, through a fostered lack of self-worth when we are already okay people, even if not perfect. No-one is.
I can't physically cope with caring for my purchases anymore. So, no matter the original cost, if I don't need/want it, I will find a new home for it & freely give it away. I can't cope with the effort of selling & would rather donate to friends or charity. The whole point is to make life (ethically) easier from 70 onwards.
But here I would say, if someone cutting your hair is easier, go to the (sensibly-priced) salon. Having short fine hair, I need someone else's expertise to cut it, but I don 't need the nails & I can do a pedicure or face mask at home.
Ornaments & books are being slimmed down. I can't do with the storage & dusting. Jewellery I've collected, only to wear little of it regularly. Note to self: Buy no more earrings! (I'll try not!)
I've found a useful rule of thumb is, if you have to bring something into the house, make sure something goes out. If you take sthg to the charity shop, don't come out with a bag(s) bigger than you came in with & preferably none. Small is beautiful & less is more.
But, if you're not saving money for any specific reason, it is always worthwhile spending to make life easier - a man to cut the hedge, a nice meal out to save on the effort of cooking. The one buys you time for something nicer & the other is something nicer!
Thanks, Patti, & all the commentators for your thoughtful ideas.

I used to wear makeup 6 days out of 7. All that changed last November when I was diagnosed with cancer completely out of the blue. My priorities have changed. I look after my skin, using inexpensive items. I no longer surf the web looking for things to buy. As I'm unable to work atm I don't need to keep buying clothes and makeup, I'll use what I already have and I've always got plenty of toiletries which are bought for Christmas and birthdays. I get enjoyment out of getting outdoors and seeing the wildlife. Yes, my priorities have certainly changed.

I don't celebrate or decorate for Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Halloween, birthdays, or anything. I try not to see anyone during that time. I once loved those holidays when I was young, but after getting old, I don't even know when they come around anymore. I'm not Scrooge because I am thankful for what those days stand for. They just don't bring the joy they once did.

I'm 82. I look a bit like you, with glasses, so your colors and taste runs with mine. My dad died when I was 13, and i learned to do my own hair. I have not been in a beauty salon in thirty years or more (and that was under duress from my daughter who was getting married.) I've never had a manicure or even seen the inside of a nail salon. I do not feel I've missed a thing. I'm a thrift store junkie, and I've found Hermes scarves and more at thrifts and I think my apartment and clothing reflect good, if not great, taste. My rabbi's wife told me one day, "You are the most stylish woman I know.." I lived on that remark for months! Life can be so much fun and money is secondary to just about everything else. Do keep on with your podcast. We need straightforward people in our lives.

    Patti, thank you so
much for this video.. At 72, I have been thinking about these very things… To be honest, it saddens me that I am in the winter of life ( sure don’t feel that way on the inside), but we have to accept things we cannot change and age is one thing we cannot change. I, too, want to rid myself of all of the extras in my closets and cabinets of things I never use.. (And my kids will not want them either. ) So I am clearing out and simplifying, and it feels good to give away to others things I no longer use or want…Time to Stop spending just to spend… Time to use up products instead of always buying more.. Time to do more things for myself rather than pay someone else for their service. Doing for others, being kind & thoughtful, are much more meaningful and satisfying ways to spend ones life…Thank you, Patti, for your calm, kind, and wise approach to life….❤️

I watched videos for gel nails then dip powder, and for a small investment I have been able to do them myself for probably the last 20 years! I have alway cut, colored and styled my own hair! I am lucky that my now white hair looks almost like platinum and I get compliments all of the time. My point here is that if you want them bad enough you can do it yourself if you can’t afford to get them done! I am an artist, potter, acrylic and watercolor so I believe that all helps. I love watching you and I think you do a phenomenal job at taking care of your hair, skin and nails! And you always look very classy! My weakness was always skin care and really the truth is those products help but good genes are the key! I wasted so much time and money on that. Now I agree with the other comments dove, ponds oil of Olay work just fine! They have made it so complicated with all of the different “best” for this or that that I feel any moisturizer and sunscreen is all we need! Thank you for what you do! You are beautiful inside and out! One more thing, I am so sorry to hear that the reporter killed in Ukraine was a friend of your daughter. This war is breaking my heart and I pray daily for it to end and for all of those wonder innocent people over there. Thank you for this post and I am sorry my comments were so long! ❤️

I had acrylic nails and gel nails for quite sometime. I stopped getting them done in March 2020 when the pandemic began. It took about a month to grow my natural nails which are permanently damaged from the drilling. I prefer a French manicure and am able to do it myself. You are right about the cost over time and shaping. I don't miss the nail salon at all.

This horrible pandemic has forced us to take a good look at what’s really important and it is NOT things. Every time I go to buy something I ask myself do I really need it and who will want it when I’m gone…Our children and grandchildren lead different lives ….they don’t want our stuff! I'm a crafter and two years ago I purged on my dollhouse miniature items including mini cutting machines, tools, etc. I still have 2.5 bins of miniatures with projects I haven't been able to start and those are all in storage. To replace the empty void, I started messing with moulds and epoxy resins! I should've stopped there. I don't want to tell you the expense in that area, but the bulk of what I really have, are my books. I have a diversified collection and when I sometimes look them up, I see how the price keeps going up on my Dollhouse and rare books, and this is even after purging them two years ago. I use to have over 35 medium sized boxes of books that are now narrowed to about 20. Too much!! Overwhelming! Thank-you for this video. I enjoyed it.

If I need a retail "fix", I go to to the Dollar Tree. There, I load up on holiday decor, cards and bagged candy. I donate most of it to a local assisted living home where I volunteered before Covid. Amazing you touched upon everything I’m going through and I just turned 61 last month.
About your nail expense, remember that the people you spent money with needed that money as their income. I remind myself of that often. You helped them live with your contribution for services, and it was a social influence for good also. So please don’t feel guilty.
I am giving things away. now. I will never regain my ability to do the craft things I once enjoyed as it supplied a genuine need for our kids, their friends, charity, church and the community. There are people that still do those activities for their mental health, or community needs, or income. Donate those supplies. And the place I donate things has a store like Goodwill’s, but they have disabled young people working in the stores under adult supervision. And the prices are about 90% less (yes, that cheap). The joy on people’s faces when they can afford things so inexpensively is just a blessing in itself.
It takes practice learning how to give away things. Especially things you like, but it’s okay to bless someone else with your items. Pray over them and ask God to get them into the right hands. It gets easier as you practice doing it. Blessings to you for your inspiring videos. ❤️⭐️🙏

I've vowed to use up all of it before I buy another. Also: jewelry, both inexpensive (unless I lose another one of my hoops, or because it's on clearance,) and expensive, fine jewelry. I have sons, and their wives have plenty, or different taste. When my time comes, very few pieces would be "cherished" anyway.

I have a "thing" for shampoo & conditioner, too ! Deep conditioner, anything that promises strength, shine, no frizz...gotta try it. I have so many & use a different one each time I shower. Takes forever to use up any of them...so, I get bored w/ what I've got & next thing I know, the shamoo/ conditioner aisle is beckoning me!! I simply love trying all sorts of brands. A long time ago , I was content w/ just a bottle of each ( shampoo & conditioner). But now! There is a vast selection!! 🤗

Patti: You have spoken to my heart. I actually thought something was wrong with me. At one time in my life, I couldn’t get enough of things I collected (and there was a lot) and now I look at think WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!!! My children have told me “just remember everything you buy will end up in a yard sale” Woe 😂is me! I find the older you get, the less you need (I am 80). Too bad we didn’t realize this when we were younger and really didn’t need all of that “retail therapy”. Oh my, wisdom too late. You have inspired me to make a lot of changes. No one will be happier than my husband ❤

I always joked with my sister that my closet is living a full lifestyle I do not live!! I now buy to my actual lifestyle, not one I only imagined! I no longer get my nails done. New furniture is on the horizon, I have waited 20 years for this. I am 65 and realize that when something new comes in something has to go. I have a short pixie cut so my hair has to be cut every 5 weeks or so. I have tried to go to a regular haircut place for 2 years now but have recently gone back to the salon. At this time, for me it is still worth it. All the things you have mentioned I also question. Still sorting it all out.!
My heart hurts for all the people of Ukraine.

I agree about the skin care products but I saw a lady on instagram who suggested Cetaphil moisturizing cream for your body. It is around $16 for a very large tub at Walmart. I thought I might as well give it a try. The first time I used it I thought it was awfully thick and almost looked like lard but Oh MY GOODNESS, it is wonderful at taking care of dry skin and works for days. So since covid I decided to try it on my face. I am 72 and needed moisturizer for the first time. It is also great for your face. I had been using expensive skin care products that did not do the same as Cetaphil. I even told my dermatologist about it. My BFF also loves it. Just try it I promise you won’t be disappointed. I enjoy your channel….

I've had the same experience - getting into the car and shaping my nails. Recently I let the owner of the salon my granddaughter likes polish my nails but not file them. I wanted just a sheer (extremely pale pink) ONE COAT of the color. She refused to give me a sheer coat. Guess she did not like me saying not to file them. I am very near 76 and agree with you. I buy very little and keep getting rid of things. I feel so much better with my life.

Hi Patti. In my case, I went a little crazy buying wigs. I lost my hair in 2018 during chemotherapy, and have continued to buy all the new cute styles even though I have plenty of wigs and my hair has grown back (but is very thin on top, so I continue to wear my wigs). I am feeling saturated now, so no more buying wigs! I also have an enormous book collection...at least 3000 books! Yes, a new car's worth of books! I do still purchase a few each year, mainly from the authors I collect, but I am trying to utilize the library for any other books I want to read. I also used to collect jewelry, but I have so much now, that I really do not need to add any more pieces to my collection. I do want to start going through all the other stuff that has just accumulated over the past 50 years and cull out the best items and let the rest go. I've been watching decluttering videos from several different ladies and will try their methods to see which one will work for me. My parents lived through the Great Depression and instilled in me that everything is precious, so it is difficult for me to let go of anything. But I will give it a try. Thanks for your video.
    Hugs to you!
    Shelly

It's nice knowing that my kids won't have to rent a couple dumpsters when I kick the bucket. Items I no longer buy are jewelry and purses. Patti, I’m 57 and I am at the point I question the need for everything I buy. It feels like a bad habit, adding more junk to the pile. Everyday is ground hogs day…get up and look for things to buy. It feels like these things are encroaching on me and I’m planning a big spring cleanout with the hopes I do not replenish the items I’ve let go. I think we are all hoarders to an extent. We seek for things outside ourselves to bring happiness when for me the most peace comes from going within, praying asking for guidance, doing nothing( no thing). I think that makes us feel scared and uncomfortable, and we block out that quiet contemplation by doing things all the time.

I'm 58 and feel the same way. Sometimes I get a little endorphin rush when I buy something new but in the long run it makes me feel worse. I have more stuff to pick up, store and clean and I have more than enough of everything. Also, clothing styles don't look as good on me as they used to so I don't get that thrill of wearing something new like I used to. Then theres the guilt of buying stuff I really don't need when I should be saving.

    • @annettev2648
      @annettev2648 2 года назад +7

You’re right and the guilt of spending all that money makes it hard to throw or give stuff away. I could wear something different everyday for months. I’ve been doing much better. It takes a long time to press buy, I’m almost overcome with heat when I buy something that’s not a necessity. About two years ago I really wanted to stop buying things. I said God stop me the next time I go to buy something. The next day Vera Bradley was having a sale. I immediately tried to buy a few things and my iPad wouldn’t let the order go through. I hopped on my husbands computer and it wouldn’t go through on there either. I thought that was pretty funny. The remedy is don’t get on these sites to look.

I have realized that I have more than enough clothes! Believe me, I am grateful that I do and am not complaining, so I buy very few articles of clothing. I usually purchase everything at a wonderful consignment shop and have come up with a workable solution for myself. If I find something there, I will consign something from what I already have. If I buy a purse ( my weakness ), the next time I go in I bring a purse to consign. Same with just about everything. Jewelry is another weakness, so the same thing holds. Frequently on Mondays I will go through my stuff and when the shop opens on Tuesday, many times I have a bunch of items to consign. Then, a couple of times a year or so, I collect the money I earned from my consignments. Most of it goes right back into the store, but I love my system.

I'm going to be 56 next month and I have been feeling the exact same way. Makeup, packing accessories, so many unnecessary purchases. I stop dong my nails about six months ago. My jaw dropped when you mentioned the Kiss press on nails. They are what weaned me off the acrylics.. This week I have notice more than ever how conscious I am on any new purchases. I now first now check if a can utilize what I currently have. I get so happy that I can save some money, instead of a wasting money on a new unnecessary purchase. There are things that still bring me joy, but I have been dropping certain items more and more. I lost my Mother14 years ago and you make me miss her even more. She always had the same kind of common sense and such practical views. Your videos seem to always pop up when I need them the most. Always on a the exact subject that I currently need to hear about, at that time in my life. I thank god for the day you entered my world. Patti, I had to think about your video. I imagine through the years we all have spent what we could on our appearance. But I think we all have tried to be the best we could be. Because of that, you and I are the people we are today. I am not sure we should regret past efforts to be attractive. Yes, at 74, my priorities have changed. I just bought a foot bath so I can do my own pedicure. I no longer want to “have to” go to the salon. So with age and life we are always adapting. The pandemic accelerated this process I think. I think it’s if you were happy with those nails, it was worth it. I recently had my short nails only painted with sparkly red polish, for a dance competition. My piano students went nuts over them. It’s the first time my nails were ever painted. I’ve decided to maintain them, however, I just got diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. Someone told me I would have to leave the polish. So, when I am healed, I’m doing it again. To me the skin care is important. I’m going to look good while I get my treatments. But I’ve been a no makeup girl forever. I wore some for my competition and realized that I can highlight my best features with practically nothing. So, I’ll continue that, too. I will watch my pocketbook carefully. Best wishes to you.
