    So lots of complaints that I didn't do 1440p test... even though I know that most people are NOT gaming at 1440p, is there any interest in redoing these tests at 1440p, or just let the subject die?

    • @MarcHeyer
      @MarcHeyer 9 лет назад +56

      Let it die. I play at 1440p on a Asus ROG Swift and it's totally fine. Edit: Ahead of the flamer: 2 970's in Sli

      +Cody Williams The GTX 970 effectively has 4 Gigs of ram.... just .5 is slower than the rest. Your argument is invalid.

    • @123miscrits

      +Cameron East doesn't change the fact that nvidia lied to their users. And if you were to sli for 4k you would be better of with a r9 390

    • @catalyzt9
      @catalyzt9 8 лет назад +39

      Cameron East It wasn't an argument, it was a joke. Second of all, the .5 gigs that are "slower" aren't actually slower, they're almost nonexistent. Most games don't even pick up on the extra 500mbs, especially dated titles, Skyrim for instance.

    I have a Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming 4GB and all this 3.5GB VRAM issue is a fuss about nothing, people posting crap about the card and they don't even own one, I play at 2560 x 1440 at have yet to see any issues with the card, no flickering, freezing...nothing. Trust me guys, its a good card, buy with confidence. Rate the comment up so people see.

      yep same here gaming with a pb278Q and gtx970 at 1440p np whatsoever. What's funny is people getting in amoral high horse claiming Nvidia intentionally lied, paradoxically spreading miss information about the performance of a card they don't even own.

    • @vincent6845
      @vincent6845 9 лет назад +8

      They did lie, everybody should know that, should you buy an 970 probably not.
      Why? You saying nvidia that it is ok to lie .
      Shouldyou send it back? Onlyif you need 4gb or want to use an cheaper card for 1080p and make some profit

    • @Britec09
      @Britec09 9 лет назад +2

      I agree they did lie, but it don't affect the performance, maybe with 4k you might see, but I have not seen any issue running at 2560 x 1440 on ultra settings.

      Hey JayzTwoCents maybe i'm wrong but when you were playing Skyrim and talking about Vram you were putting your mouse over the FPS. Is that really what the Vram is? Cause I saw above that other numbers there were Memory Clock and Memory Usage. Not if i'm wrong let me know as I'm not really a big time gamer. I dont play any computer games as my computer is old but still does the job I need it to do. Plus i dont have hardly any money to even be thinking about a gaming computer.

    I have an MSI R9 290X Lightning, I have "all" 4GB. Shadow of Mordor still stutters for me. The HD texture pack wants 6GB of VRAM. That's what causes the GPU stuttering.
    My friend with an R9 290x Vapor-X 8GB is the only one I know who doesn't get stuttering in SoM. Another friend has the GTX 980 Classified, I believe. He also experiences stuttering with the VRAM hogging HD texture pack.
    Just because the game isn't optimized very well for VRAM (let's be honest, the HD texture pack doesn't warrant the amount of VRAM it demands) doesn't mean it's being caused by "VRAMGate".
    I've used AMD for GPU's for years. You could even say I'm a fan boy. There are two things that are facts here.
    1. If you were going to buy a GTX 970, and decided not to because of the VRAM issue, you're kind of an idiot. In fact you are supremely an idiot, because the price/performance of the card wouldn't be any different with that extra 500 megs of VRAM. You won't find any performance boost or some niche advantage by picking up an R9 290x that is given to it by its "true" 4GB. The only difference is some extra 4k performance from the wider memory bus. However, nobody plays 4k on just one 290x.
    2. The GTX 970 is one of the best cards Nvidia has ever made. It is a feat of engineering and the Maxwell architecture has completely blown open the low power/small form factor market. Literally my favorite Nvidia card since the 9800 GTX+.

    I really don't get the argument "hey the benchmarks didn't change". To be fair AT THE MOMENT the 0.5 gb doesn't matter. In future games with higher reqs it will matter. Don't be so shortsighted. I paid good money for this card and I expect it to serve me for couple of years. Nvidia screwed us and they need to refund us. I don't believe it is a marketing mistake. I mean after it came out. The engineers could have corrected this mistake with a press release but they stayed silent. Their actions reveal their psychology which is the psychology of a thief. If they don't fix this I will never buy a product from them again.

    • @Jayztwocents
      @Jayztwocents  9 лет назад +41

      I dont think 500mb is going to make you as "futureproof" as you think it will, but your statement about them not updating their press info is correct. That is where they hurt themselves

    • @erdal0
      @erdal0 9 лет назад +6

      *****
      Obviously you are getting paid to say these things or you lack some knowledge (with all respect). 500 mb vram is not just like every other 500 mb vram. Vram shouldn't be looked at that in that way. For example the PS4 has more vram than gtx 970 but it is weaker.

    • @TheOrion2728
      @TheOrion2728 9 лет назад

      Nope, he has a normal day job like everyone else and if we want to get super technical on the AMD and Nvidia cards like X vs. Non-X then yes, the Non-X versions are always going to be slightly lower clocks than the X versions. Likewise the GTX 980 is always going to be bigger and faster than the 970 and 960 because the 980 is the highest-tiered "Big Brother" to those other 2 cards.
      It's just how they're designed. Furthermore, those folks that are getting all bent out of shape over this, it only became apparent on SoM and that was only after having the HD Texture pack which some have admitted that the HD texture pack has some issues there.
      In my opinion, as long as I can run everything I want to run in relatively high to max settings, I'm happy. Which it did seem like this card did do just that.

    • @erdal0
      @erdal0 9 лет назад +4

      ***** my apologies then but do you know that the 0.5 gb is not as fast as the 3.5 gb? They screwed us on multiple levels (us being who bought it). If marketing really made a mistake. They wouldn't have waited with this press release. They are only sorry when they were caught and probably yes they knew we would eventually find out but it was just a trick to trick people and make loads of money.

    While I will still keep my 970, and the issue doesn't affect me too much, I can see why people are upset. Firstly the matter of false advertising is at play, which is a huge deal. Secondly for people who bought one for high res or for SLI, I can see the issue being a big one. I think Nvidia really needs to apologise and market it as a 3.5GB card, and make amends with returns being simple.

    • @KaranDas
      @KaranDas 9 лет назад +1

      I had a read somewhere in a 970 shitstorm thread in the official nvidia forums that some guy managed to get his 970 exchanged for a reference 980 for free.Hopefully Nvidia officially does start a program like this.As for the 970,i still love mine.Didn't have to change my PSU (Corsair VS550) and it feels like a huge upgrade compared to my old 750 Ti..pretty much destroys everything at 1080p.

    • @danielburgos3817
      @danielburgos3817 9 лет назад

      They won't market it now as a 3.5 card because you are able to go into those 4 gbs of memory but those last 5 are at a significantly lower speeds. Some people are argue why would I even want the last 5 if they are so much lower than the 3.5 so I can see why you would say that

    • @ltcuddles685
      @ltcuddles685 9 лет назад

    Can't say the testing here was too great, honestly. A ton of people that early adopted the 970 wanted it for, and what it was touted for at that, 1440p+ and being able to decimate games at a low price. Is the VRAM an issue? Yes. More conclusive testing has proven this. Is it still a powerful card? Yes. Is it worth it? Probably not. Everyone told me to get a 970 instead of a second 780, which was stupid advice even disregarding this vramgate schnozzle, because the 970 just had oh-so-much more oh-so-important VRAM, and I disregarded it because 3GB is enough for what I do. The big problem is that everyone went out and (stupidly) early-adopted what was hailed as an amazingly affordable 1440p+ card that had a bout of false advertising relevant to hardware, and not just hardware, but the very specific portion of the hardware relevant to why people bought the card in the first place (again, 1440p+). The big kicker is that many people bought two 970s to drive 4k because it was that "perfect" budget card. With both cards limited to 3.5GB on 4k, this comes up as a much bigger issue. This is the same shit as the gimped titan, ferni, etc. Nvidia really has no shame with their PR, and while this card is still definitely powerful and decent for the price, the more money you give to a company that keeps doing these things, the more likely they'll keep doing it. I think this problem is more rooted in terms of ethics than "oh shit, the 970 is suddenly a terrible card". It's just not what they said it is, and while the 970 isn't any less good, Nvidia definitely is from all of this. I won't be replacing my 780s for a while, but in all likelihood green-team isn't going to see me purchasing anything from them.

    • @Jayztwocents
      @Jayztwocents  9 лет назад +20

      I heavily disagree with you since the Steam Hardware Poll from data that is collected from systems shows that over 98% of gamers are on 1080p or less. So where as guys like you and me have 1440p and in my case also 4k monitors, this does not ACCURATELY represent the average buyer. That is who I was talking to in this video. If that wasn't you, then you are in the minority (a cool minority though)

    • @Alexandra-Rex

      ***** Sure, but that's a voluntary hardware survey, and I think it should definitely be taken with a grain of salt. The last time I took a hardware survey was when I was moving from Warcraft 3 to DotA 2 beta like... 3 years ago. I was still using 900p then, but I have 3 monitors, one of which is 21:9 now. Not that I'm saying the survey is outright false, but the numbers are definitely not that high anymore. When people could go out and buy a korean 1440p panel for for 200-300 dollars, drop one from massdrop, etc, 1080p became a lot less relevant. I can go on to mention "anti-DRM" purists that avoid steam too, but that's something in itself.
      But yea, the average person that uses 1080p that just slides shit to max and doesn't care? Sure, this is a non-issue aside from the really awful PR of it all. I'm just speaking from experience on ocn/other places where people were really hyped for this card, and they're really justifiably upset that they didn't get what they wanted. I know someone that went from a 780 to a 970. He could've just popped in another 780 and bam, work done, 1.5x the power of a single 970.
      Some people are definitely jumping on a bandwagon and acting more upset than they should be or really are, and I personally think those that went out of their way to sell off their 970s are idiots, but even still. It's a really nuanced issue, but I think it's good that it has this much attention albeit some of it being over the top.

    The reason people with cards that have less than 3 GB are not complaining is simply because knew that their cards had exactly the amount of VRAM that was advertised. It's more of a marketing issue than a performance issue. To me, the 970 is still considered a mid-range card.

    30 FPS "the FPS is terrible". Funny... 30 FPS used to be the "very playable" point a couple of years ago. Also most cards seem to be 2 gigs so you already have some extra space. NO really demanding games have released in 2014 that need that much vRAM consistently but Wither 3 and other 2015/2016 games will show a large advantage in favor of AMD Hawaii GPUs. THe 970 will fall drastically behind here in 2015

    If we take the lies from NVIDIA out:
    Whats the prob with the GTX 970?
    Its a Enthusiast 3,5G Card.
    If you have that much money to go 4K Gaming, you either buy a R9 295x2 or a 980ti/Titan. Seriously.
    Who on 4k (really the only thing that uses more than 3G RAM, most Graphic Cards are having 2GB) wants to buy an 970?
    If i have the money for 4K and ULTRA Settings on everything, i would go for a 980ti. GTX970 is perfect for normal 720/1080P Gamers.

    • @Mrmhmd1993

      Nein ! Games like gta v and shadow of mordor use more than 3.5 gb at 1080p. I want to build my new pc and I hate to upgrade, so I want a gpu that is good for future games. I'm pretty sure that future games will use a lot of vram so for me the r9 390 is the better choice. Btw I love your profile picture ^^

    • @CODA96
      @CODA96 9 лет назад +2

      Mrmhmd1993 That nein got me.
      Yeah, but hey, the R9 390 is pretty high in price. Not everyone wants so spend that much money, on the GPU alone.
      And thank you. I dont hear that last sentence often.

    • @Mrmhmd1993
      @Mrmhmd1993 9 лет назад +2

      The 390 is equal to the 970 in price ! And I don't have a lot of money to buy a 980 ti (more expensive than two 390's). So I'm only considering the 970 and the 390. But as I said, future games will require more than 4 vram so 390 is better on the long run.

    If its advertised as 4gb and not 3.5gb, then I'm paying for 4gb.
    I got 2x STRIX in SLI, and for me who bought them for the sake for current and future gaming, I dont care how well they perform in "current games" in either 1080p, 1440p or 4k, doesnt mean shit to try to neglect that this is a serious problem regarding false advertising.
    After a lot of thinking, I've decided to turn them in on the premise on that this was adv. as a 4gb card.
    And Jay, I know you are sponsored and shit and have to keep a low key on stuff like this to not get blacklisted, but dont really try to neglect that this is something everybody should be cool with since the avg. gamer plays on 1080p. Get a grip dude...

      hayharut Neither, it's more like 50-60 fps (without MSAA, which to be honest isn't needed at all ;) ). WIth MSAA it's like 40-50fps. And we are speaking here of max details, just turning 2 or 3 options a little down will give you 60fps experience without really sacrificing the quality. ;)

    i play at 1080p max settings on every hard hitting game, hasn't been any problem with me. even with 4K resolution with nvidia's DSR, it still hovers around the acceptable 30fps++, but i'm pretty sure nobody plays at 4K resolution this day and age, probably in 5 years when 4K is the standard, but not today. it is a beast of a card, more powerful than the R9 290X, close to the GTX 780 Ti, only requires a 500W PSU, at the price of $300++. if you're still paranoid, wait for AMD's offering this year, in the form of the (R9 390?), or anything similar.

    • @MaGicMik3z
      @MaGicMik3z 8 лет назад

      I agree the r9 390 is a better card for longevity but i myself can not see myself settling for a mid range card when a better card comes out in a couple years time i think most people will get itchy feet and buy something better by the time the r9 390 feels like it was a better investment then a 970 the thing that makes the debate so back and forth about he two card it that they are very close in price performance i'm not to surprised 3,5gb vs 8gb that like saying my 2.0l petrol is quicker than your 1.6l diesel car.Its the price that makes an argument if the r9 390 was say 20% more money this wouldn't be a issue or debate in the first place.
      Anyway i like my card you like yours. if nvidia pull the same stunt in a couple years time with the gb issues i'll be investing in amd we will see.

      Wait for pascal/polaris series.
      For 4-5 years all amd did was refresh their old series and sell them with new names, Im honestly suprised how well those cards perform considering Its a fucking old technology.
      But with pascal/polaris things will be different,
      They will use a new technology and HBM instead of GDDR5. So you better wait untill they release and prices get lower.
      8 gb vram is a little overkill for 1080p right now. I agree on that,even the most vram hungry games use like 4 gb at best settings.
      But with time games eat more and more vram,
      For example 2 gb is nothing right now but I remember some big channels were saying shit like ''you will never need more than 2g for vram for 1080p''.
      and 1 year later, now 2 gb is nothing lol.

      +La Bella Damir I saw on Linus channel when he did a video on this as well he had a chart saying BF4 uses the most vram then most game like .5GB more then 3.5GB. Since I play on large conquest or small closterfuck maps 64v64 player maps, Is this going to be a problem for me? Should I go for a gtx980 or r9 390x. How come Jay was getting around 70fps and you got 140 fps?

    • @damiresq
      @damiresq 8 лет назад

      +Shadower1337 that was a fresh install of the card with the old settings and my mind was blown away haha. I have the bf4 video settings as in the video exept field of view is set higher at 90 degrees (more ram needed for that) but the resolution scale is set at default 100. Average fps i think is around 95 - 100. I play 1080p with cpu i 7 4770 16gb ram. if you can aford a gtx 980 then higher is better no ? But such investment for bf4 makes no sense maybe only if you play 4k monitors wich means you are loaded so you dont need to question about wich one to buy :)

    It's way too obvious that Jay was trying to smooth over the 970's vram-problem. First of all, it's a HUGE legal problem, since the lawsuits that followed contained accusations saying that Nvidia intentionally deceived their customers, and that the product did not live up to the claims that were made. And secondly, the performance problem is very real, given the sheer amount of people who experienced it. I mean, it's very easy to bump up settings, mods and overall resolutions to surpass a 3,5GB vram usage, at which point the problem reveals itself.
    The main reason that Jay didn't test this at higher resolutions was because he knew that it would definitely show some problems. So he made up an excuse for only testing at 1080p. Now, some people defended the whole thing by saying: "Well, a single 970 can't really handle more than 1080p anyway, meaning that people didn't buy it for 1440p or 4k gaming."
    The answer to that would be all the people who bought MORE THAN ONE 970, to play games at 1440p, and perhaps at 4k to a certain degree as well. The thing is that the 970, with its claimed "4 Gigabytes" should be perfect in a 2-way SLI configuration, given that 4GB is a quite decent margin, even at 1440p. And since vram doesn't stack in Crossfire or SLI, those 4GB were imperative for a non problematic gaming experience. So these people were the real losers, since the strangled vram on the 970 made their planned gaming experience a lot less worth. Luckily though, most buyers could return their 970's without too much of a hassle.

      Who plays games at 4k with a 970? Yes it's an high tier card but at most 1440p is what someone would play on this. 4k is NOT viable even with a 980ti. The tech right now just isn't good enough. 970 at a ~300 price range (200 used on craigslist) is great for 1080p and light 1440p gaming.

      Doom 1080p ultra settings, locked 60fps, with Max AA settings. The consoles use a dynamic resolution to maintain high fps. Not an apples to apples comparison, but probably one of the best games for console performance, since 20-30 fps seams acceptable in many console titles. They should at least give console players a 720p higher fps option, since some console owners appreciate smooth gameplay, and lower input lag.

    Don't forget there are people who will use this card for other things, 3D rendering for example. I understand that is a minority but it reflects the fact that video cards aren't used for games exclusively.

    • @g4anode
      @g4anode 9 лет назад

      I was talking 3D renders. My personal renders have used around 2GB of memory, but it wasn't anything too complex. Add in complex geometry, caustics and other bells and whistles and you will run into the memory wall. I quote from the blender wiki:
      "Why does a scene that renders on the CPU not render on the GPU?
      There maybe be multiple causes, but the most common is that there is not enough memory on your graphics card. We can currently only render scenes that fit in graphics card memory, and this is usually smaller than that of the CPU. Note that, for example, 8k, 4k, 2k and 1k image textures take up respectively 256MB, 64MB, 16MB and 4MB of memory.
      We do intend to add a system to support scenes bigger than GPU memory, but this will not be added soon."

      on the part of you talking about Linux saying " it matters which games you play in order to determine how much vram you need" is actually pretty true but he did also add in a part saying how much for the games in the future you want to play and how much they will need too.
      On the part about professional applications needing tons of VRAM yes this is true though i see most of them getting a quadro + tesla mix or a 980 over a 970 with the quadro + tesla being preferred over the 980 of course but the 980 being used if the money is not there ... the 980 not the 970 as most applications in 3D rendering do not use normal SLI nor normal crossfire thus making rendering on a single card much better than hoping that it will render on multiple cards for all the applications that they use for 3D rendering.
      For gaming though it still looks like 2x 970s whcih are only a little more than 1x 980 are the better bet for the best sub $1,000 mark GPU budget performance.

    • @marshallprods8747
      @marshallprods8747 9 лет назад

      No I had no intention of trolling.
      By 3D rendering I meant rendering non-interactive media (animations) via softwares (Cinema 4D, 3DS Max, Maya,...) that are CPU intensive (because of the complex calculations).
      When people mention "3d rendering", they don't refer to live rendering inside video games, but rather the non-interactive video rendering inside 3d animating softwares which primarily rely on the CPU.
      Look it up if you're not sure what I mean.

    Straight forward answer here, if you going to run this card on GTA 5 on 4K resolution, then don't bother. GTA 5 is known for using lots of RAMs. And some games like Battlefield 4, Shadow of Mordor, The Witcher 3 used beyond 3.5GB on 4K. So might as well stick to AMD or pay more for 980.

    Jay- I think you're off when you say that "the average PC gamer won't buy Skyrim and start modding." The kind of person that buys a GTX 970 and plays Skyrim at a resolution of 1080p or higher will most likely want to mod the game, to make it look prettier. While it may be true that the majority of gamers are running at 1080p or lower right now, the GTX 970 is a high-end card. I want to see what resolution most people buying a GTX 970 are gaming at. You also have to consider the issue when it comes to SLI. Quite a few people that buy a graphics card like this intend to run 2 or 3 of them in SLI, at resolutions far above 1080p. This is where it falls on it's face. On top of that, it's not enough to say "the majority of gamers will be ok with this." If ANY paying customers are being affected by this issue, they should get some type of compensation from Nvidia or it's board partners, IMO. It's not a good line of thinking to suggest that a miscommunication or outright deception should be written off because it didn't affect a high percentage of people. This is an issue of ethics.
    Your testing methodology was very flawed, IMO, and didn't sufficiently test the product in the environment that it was intended/marketed for. That environment is high resolution, high-end, often modded gaming. That's what your GTX 970s and 980s are for. That's not really what you tested. Then there is the issue of integrity for Nvidia and their board partners. I don't blame people for being put-off by Nvidia's handling of this situation. They not only allowed their customers to be misled about the memory situation, but the ROPs as well. Now that they have their customer's money, they have shown no indication that they are going to do ANYTHING for those who ARE being affected by this.

    • @hartsickdisciple
      @hartsickdisciple 9 лет назад

      ***** Actually, I don't do those things. I currently own a mildly-overclocked GTX 760 and game at 1080p. That's more than enough GPU for the vast majority of games at my resolution.
      High-end GPUs are for top performance in demanding scenarios. I stand by my statement that a significant percentage of people buying a GPU like the GTX 970 didn't buy it to run vanilla games at 1080p. That's not the target audience for this product.
      To me, your test is analogous to someone hearing about a high-end sports car intended for track use having overheating problems.
      They decide to test this claim by getting one and testing it... except their test involves doing 3 laps at 100 mph, when it's supposed to be a 200 mph car that can handle whole track days.
      Did they test the car sufficiently to reach an educated conclusion as to the validity of the complains about the car in it's intended environment? Absolutely not. The same is true of testing 3 or 4 vanilla games with a GTX 970, running at 1080p.
      This is not even getting into the issue of principle, which is the bigger one IMO. Nvidia and their board partners allowed the product to be misrepresented. It's called full disclosure, and they didn't do it.

      I did not experience any stutters on my machine and i run it on 1440p. I have to admit 1080p is on its way out. Why author decided to use this resoultion is beyond me. I will wait till witcher 3 comes out, as of now buying 970 would hurt my mojo.

      If you actually watched the video he said why he only did 1080 and that was because 98% of steam poll users only have 1080 or lower.

      Jordan The Toaster it can't be Wright then. Why buy expensive card to play 1080p. I am on 1440p for the last two years. And I don't know why anyone now or even 6mnths ago go for 1080p. Well I do agree that casual players are on 1080p but they also don't buy £300 gpu to play casually. So in a nut she'll a majority who bought 970 are on 1440p or higher and this fact is often missed. Have a great day.

    -1 sub mate cause I feel you either got (paid*) for this video or you are green to the bone. You can't say with confidence to your audience about that this will not happen again and make EXCUSES on behalf of Nvidia. Really dissapointed mate.You are trying to convice people that they are ok buying a 4GB graphics card when they get 3.5 because your opinion is that the general buyer will not use high demanding things. NO my opinion is I pay for 4 large tomatoes I get 4 large tomatoes not 3 large and 1 cherry tomato, even if I use them or not. People paid for what it was advertised and they did not get it. Thats some tricky stuff and I dont like them. Sorry If my English are not the best as it's not my first language.

      What he's saying is that for the average gamer, even though there was a miscommunication, 3.5gbs of vram is not a problem. He's not making excuses. He's making valid point. The card performs fine and everyone was extremely impressed with it, so it's not really a problem

    Would this card work for a game like Just Cause 3? My son's computer has a R9 270x with 2 gb and this is the first game that we have noticed constant frame rate drops and he has played Fallout 4 , Arc , Skyrim flawlessly..He has a i5 4460 with 8 gb of ram

    This video has aged badly with your stance on AMD 'they lied to us don't buy Radeon' . Makes no sense, lying about the hardware and reviewers marketing that product based on those lies is far more serious.
