I bought a 2000 XJ with a 4.0, and the previous owner used a shop that doubled down on coolant stop leak. Just replace the leaking parts, freeze plugs in my case. Needless to say I had a job ahead of me. Used a chemical flush, but first blasted water through my system about 3 times (brown water each time). It's a good idea to flush your heater core both directions to remove any blockage. After the chemical flush, I flushed with water 3 times (brown water again). Refilled with coolant and it's still green a year later. The reason it was being sold was it didn't heat up for the winter. I know the irony
Everytime I need to replace something on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6L 4.0, I like watching videos first to learn something and to get myself into the right frame of mind for the job at hand. Today, I’m going to replace the thermostat and lower rad hose after it overheated a few days as the wife was driving home from work and luckily it happen in the drive thru at Jack in the Box and was able to park it right away. Got a check engine light over a week ago that the engine was running too cold, which is laughable here in Hawaii. Wife shot a quick video on her iPhone showing me that the water was boiling inside the reserve bottle. I’m thinking the thermostat was stuck in the open position, which is almost the same as not having one at all. Replaced the water pump about 6 months ago, so I am hoping its just a slight leak in the lower rad hose, if not, will need to replace the water pump again. Great video on the thermostat replacement, especially using the box wrench as a guide for the lower bolt. Wish me luck!
Aloha Dan, well, I still haven’t done the thermostat yet and discovered a few new details. The overheating problem is being caused by a number of factors. First, I discovered that my three year old radiator has a small leak at the bottom corner and the electric fan doesn’t come on, which probably lead to the small leak of the radiator in the first place. Plus the intake hose for the heater coils has a bit of swelling where it clamps to the thermostat housing but can fix that easy by trimming off one inch and reconnecting the hose when I replace the thermostat. Even though I did my best to flush the engine and radiator six months ago when I replace the water pump, I did not flush out the heater core because we never use the heater here in Hawaii, lol! So I will test the electric fan and the fuses to see what the issue is there. Worst case scenario, I’ll need to replace the radiator with my stimulus check I just got last week, what get timing, lol!
Over the winter my water pump went bad. I swapped my thermostat out while I had everything already out the way. Didn’t need to be done but I figured for only a few bucks it was worth doing. Being the winter I wasn’t able to do the flush but did replace all the coolant.
Yea man, good call on the thermostat. that layer of crud that builds up keeps it from working as well as It could. A flush is best done in the summer when you can get soaked and wont freeze to death! lol
Well done guy I also have a takoizhe car I suffer I pour antifreeze the air plug does not go away the temperature immediately increases. Spare parts are expensive and we have a shortage. Greetings from Siberia! I write through the translator so I'm sorry if that!

Not sure if this has been noticed or not but when you look closer at the old thermostat you can see its stuck open and missing the inner rubber seal 19:36
Just a thought for you on your 70/30 mix for the coolant to handle more extreme temperatures - yes it may handle colder temperatures a little better with a 70/30 mix but 60/40 is plenty unless you are going saab's 30 degree weather. I believe there's even a short what shows full viscosity as well as coolant ratios for extreme colds. I would never go more than 60 40 in my opinion though as water actually runs cooler than antifreeze. It gets around 0 degrees where I live sometimes a few degrees colder and I usually do about a 55-45 mix water to coolant possibly even 6040 because like I said water runs cooler than antifreeze. You just need enough antifreeze that it will not expand in your block and cause some serious problems. so go ahead and spend a dollar extra and buy Pennzoil instead of store-brand and you got the proper thermostat so you're good to go. This is how we used to have our race cars run as cool as possible as well as our trail trucks, which were used during hunting season when it gets damn cold. Just someone from the other side of the tracks brother. Best of luck in all your Mopar Ventures and check out a Volkswagen from time to time, they are kind of like the car equivalent of jeeps in my opinion. Like the 84 to 98. Holler anytime, peace brother

This system spliced into the heater hose, worked really well to flush the heater core. Hope this helps.

oh wow! I'll remember that of I ever take a trip out there. Up in the north east it gets cold in the winter and we need that hot antifreeze in the heater core to thaw us out 🥶🤣
about how much water is left in the system after doing this? Did you already accomodate for that? Im trying to accomodate for it but if I just do 50/50, do you just add until full? Wont there be too much water ratio?

wow.. 205 is pretty hot, usually people go down 10 degrees to keep it cooler. interesting how you went up 10 degrees. any particular reason for doing so?
@@ProjectDanH yeah so my heating only blows warm air when its on hi temp only. And my temp gauge never goes higher then 190-195 but i think it should be near the 210 at operating. Maybe it helps with gas mileage too. A guy in the zj group said that it worked in his jeep 🤷♂️ So i tought i give a try.
@@ProjectDanH i replaced it a year ago. But flushed it a few weeks ago. It looks okay. My running temp with the new thermostat is fine. Soo i guess its the blend door that causes the trouble. I appreciate you have time to write back! Respect, thank you!
The two valves on top of valve cover (one is a PCV i think, other might be a exhaust valve) those have a tendency to leak, if you change those can you make a video? Thanks
Project Dan H just did my PCV valve and if youre going to do it be prepared to buy another PCV to intake hose because that bad boy isnt gonna want to come off! Haha
One is PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) and the other is CCV (Constant Crankcase Ventilation.) Just be prepared to replace everything.. grommets, elbows and hose attachments. I put a new valve cover gasket on my 4.0 and replaced everything on the cover with new parts.
Dan, wouldn't it have been easier to pull that upper heater hose and drill it while car was drained, then all you would have to do is slide it back till it vented?
@@Chrisw678 Thanks man! I think a bad blend door could be your issue. Perhaps it never opens and closes completely never allowing the hot air to come all the way through
Now I got done with the entire process, at the end running the vehicle with the heater on, added coolant as necessary about 10 minutes in and my radiator just erupts like a volcano coolant everywhere. lost about half my Reservoir, who knows how much out of my radiator. Was keeping an eye on the temperature from the dash. it held a steady just a little above the middle on the cold n hot. on the temperature looked about right, read little under 200 right about what’s the thermostat is 195 ish.... why the hell did this happen? somebody please help..
perhaps you have air trapped in the system. You must park on an incline engine up. don't cap it yet. fill the radiator and reservoir cold then start the jeep. when it heats up the thermostat will open letting coolant in. At this point you will need to add coolant. you can squeeze and massage the upper and lower rad hose to try and work out any bubble. Keep filling until she wont drink anymore, then cap it up and shut her down. That should do the trick.
@@ProjectDanH Thank you for the response but the problem was just that...... The thermostat. I replaced the thermostat along with the process and the new thermostat was a newer make and model did not have the pressurised little hole in it. finally narrowed it down to it had to be that, so I just reinstalled the original thermostat that was in it before that had the hole, problem solved. Now I’m fighting and even worse problem... my shifting is ridiculously rough and late.. Might be just a tad bit low on transmission fluid but I’m about to find that out but I doubt that is the only reason and will fix it back to a smooth shifts. I have adjusted my throttle cable every which way, that does not help at all.. I hate adulting. I wanna be a Toys R Us kid!
Surprised that you don't have the skid plate package. I had to remove the front skid plate on my '96 Orvis 4.0 to get to the lower hose and petcock so I could change my water pump.
Finally found someone who asked the same question! I have a 4.0 98 ZJ and all I can find is 18 psi rad caps. When I search online for the 16 psi it always says it's not compatible with my ZJ. I'm not leaking coolant anywhere but it tends to show overheating then cools down. I believe this is the problem because it doesn't stay at 210, but a tick over from 210
@@infinitybandofkent you don’t like your Jeep running at 210? I couldn’t find a regular 16 psi rad cap. Just had to pick up a Mr Gasket 16 rad cap from Oreillys that was $42.86 including tax with military discount.

Mix your own coolant with distilled water, if you disconnect the lower rad hose you should lose about 90% coolant
For flush the heater i have flush the radiator ??because im allready flush the radiator but no the heater line.
You don't need to. If your radiator is already flushed you can just do the heater core. 😁
Today on the project, how to make moonshine.. wait..
hahahah! don't drink that methanol!
My thermostat came with a black rubber ring around it. Did they give me the wrong one?
I know some come with that kind of gasket but the ones I have used doesn't have that. if it works use it 👍
@@ProjectDanH Sounds good. Thank you for your reply.
Hi Dan,
My name is Rick I follow you all the time. I have a question, I have a 99, 2000,2001 Cherokee sports. My 2000 and 01 are making a shaking abs sputtering when you start it. Or runs rough. What do you think it would be? Maybe plugs? Thank you hope all is well.
Rick Batchelor
I'm doing well Rick, thanks for asking. Because its an 00 and 01 I'm gonna say heat soak (common problem) ... Im gonna take a guess and say this only happens on a Hot restart right?

Hey!
Great vid!! Love it. I use 205F thermostat in my 95 4.0. What is your opinion ? Thx
A guy in the zj group said that it worked in his jeep 🤷♂️
So i tought i give a try.
@@matekosaras9190 gotcha! i wonder if you haved a clogged heater core. if you can flush it out, maybe you can lower that thermostat temp one day!
@@ProjectDanH i replaced it a year ago. But flushed it a few weeks ago. It looks okay. My running temp with the new thermostat is fine. Soo i guess its the blend door that causes the trouble.
I appreciate you have time to write back! Respect, thank you!
@@matekosaras9190 anytime! On the ZJs it could be the Mode door actuator.. it's a bit tricky to get to, but it's not a Terrible fix. 💪
The two valves on top of valve cover (one is a PCV i think, other might be a exhaust valve) those have a tendency to leak, if you change those can you make a video? Thanks
Sure, I hate those valves! so brittle! lol
Project Dan H just did my PCV valve and if youre going to do it be prepared to buy another PCV to intake hose because that bad boy isnt gonna want to come off! Haha
@@airsoftmasterpistol1 yep! Brittle AF lol
Does this year have obd 2 ? I'm trying to buy a jeep that's a 1997 jeep but needs work.
Yes. My 1998 is an Obd2. I believe all vehicles 1996 and up are obd2
Not sure is anyone else asked but why the prestone and then I see like 5 or 6 gallons of zerex? But you didn’t use it!
Great question Chris. I saved the empty Zerex containers from a 5.7 hemi flush so I had something to put the old Prestone coolant in
Dan, wouldn't it have been easier to pull that upper heater hose and drill it while car was drained, then all you would have to do is slide it back till it vented?
Lol. Of coarse!
Can you give and update? Done this so many times and my coolant is mostly green finally but took so many flushes.
Sorry. Hadn’t watched the end yet. Mine slowly gets less hot over time and slower to blow warmer air. Great vid none the less.
@@Chrisw678 Thanks man! I think a bad blend door could be your issue. Perhaps it never opens and closes completely never allowing the hot air to come all the way through
Project Dan H true. But it’s real hot after the flush for a few days. I think the heater core is just too far gone to be 100%.
Yea, i suppose so. Maybe there is still a permanent blockage in it
😎👍
I wanna be a

What was the zerex for?
I used it in the Commander with the 5.7 hemi
Why wouldn’t you just take the fan guard off to get the second bolt when changing the thermostat?
Because I didn't want to remove the radiator.
Surprised that you don't have the skid plate package. I had to remove the front skid plate on my '96 Orvis 4.0 to get to the lower hose and petcock so I could change my water pump.
Yes, unfortunately I don't have one. If I lift this or take it off-road I'll eventually try to find one.
wouldnt it be wayy easier if u took the fan cover of? nive vid
Nope! You'd have to take the fan off to get the cover off. Thanks for watching!
Wouldn't drilling the hole introduce air to the system regardless?
Awesome!
Not if only liquid goes out
@@ProjectDanH well, I looked at mine and its not really a hole. there is like a BB be held with lil metal slats? whats that about?
16 or 18 lb cap, mine says 18 ?
the 4.0 system should be 16 lbs
Finally found someone who asked the same question! I have a 4.0 98 ZJ and all I can find is 18 psi rad caps. When I search online for the 16 psi it always says it's not compatible with my ZJ. I'm not leaking coolant anywhere but it tends to show overheating then cools down. I believe this is the problem because it doesn't stay at 210, but a tick over from 210
I went with a 16 lb rad cap now 3 years later I'm going with a 180 degree thermostat instead of of 190 because I run at 210 too
@@infinitybandofkent you don’t like your Jeep running at 210? I couldn’t find a regular 16 psi rad cap. Just had to pick up a Mr Gasket 16 rad cap from Oreillys that was $42.86 including tax with military discount.
How your gates water pump doing I think about get one for my 300c
the new water pump in the hemi is great! it's been a year and it's been smooth sailing
Buy a coolant bleeder kit
How about drilling the hose ahead of time 😂 so you don’t have to spray your hands with hot coolant 😅
You need a spill-less funnel lol
