This is probably one of the simplest things you can do for your truck, but very important. It also takes more patience than almost anything else. Burping the system can seem to take forever, but it's worth waiting. I find giving the hoses a gentle squeeze now and then helps move things along as you wait. Remember, just when you think you got all the air out, give it another 10-15 minutes. Just one bubble can render your water pump inoperable and then there's nothing to stop your engine from overheating. Thanks for the video guys! Good stuff!
thanks guys, I reference this video every damn time I need to deal with coolant on my XJ - the lisle coolant overflow fill contraption is a pro move game changer!!!
Good video, just incase anyone else is still having air issues I found that putting the jeep up at 35 degree incline allowed coolant to reach the thermostat and heater core
As good as / as handy as that funnel method can be... it can get you into trouble if most of the air is not bled out first while filling. Thermostat opening will allow the rest to work it's way out... just a heads-up for your viewers.
"Lubricity is the measure of the reduction in friction and or wear by a lubricant. The study of lubrication and wear mechanisms is called tribology." Man, that's a $3 word if I ever heard one. ($4 CDN just because)
Mine took me a little while to fill back up. Then I drove it for a couple days, they repeated the process to burp out any remaining air. I also drilled a tiny hole in my thermostat (per another youtuber's suggestion), and put the hole in the "top" position when replacing my thermostat. When you own an XJ, get used to running hotter than you would normally want in a vehicle...that is until you've done 50 coolant flushes, replaced the fans, the radiator, and installed hood vents, haha.
Apparently NAPA auto parts doesn't sell thermostats with a tiny hole in them. No problem....I just used my agrarian ingenuity passed on to me by my grandfathers (both were farmers) and I took care of that.
You guys earned a subscription, because finally someone actually explained how to burped it correctly! Finally; plus they were drinking beer! Requires fines! I stick to weed so I don't F something up! 😂 good job guys!
Thanks guys, the funnel tool is a must and it's not expensive. Your the best. Informational and entertaining all the time. As far as ideas....man, it's kind of all been done hasn't it? But you bring a certain "flair" to things so maybe do something on making fuel lines or cooler lines. I'm not sure what kind of options are out there for us DIY'ers.
good stuff. i bought myself one of these but I probably let the jeep idle for too long, when i went to remove it to put the cap back on there was too much pressure and I ended up with a geyser on my engine. lesson learned, but I'm not sure where the line is between waiting till the thermostat opens and when there's too much pressure.
I want to see a video demonstrating proper, responsible disposal and storage of various automotive chemicals, including coolant, engine oil, break fluid, grease, and even stuff like anti seize, break cleaner, ect. I guess fuel and batteries and stuff too.
I'v honestly seen more cases of bad caster angles causing death wobble than anything else. Of course those vehicles had worn out bushings and joints, but that was also from the bad angles. not the cause. Cheers Bud!!
just found you guys like all your videos and you guy are great to watch , building my 2nd zj and had 4xj"s everything show is rite on the money ,thanks lee
Pabst Boys Roadhouse a buddy of mine borrowed mine to do his fluid change,,,he filled it up and he shoved the plunger in the spout...pressure built up and blew the t handle plunger out...spraying himself with hot coolant...he got lucky by having his glasses on...his face and hand ended up with 2nd degree burns...
Hi dear. ¿Have you videos where show how to replace freeze plugs in a Jeep Cherokee Limited model 1993? I'm doing by myself... and I have my baby stop 3 months ago. (XOXOXO from Colombia)
Y’all would fit in good at my buddy’s shop. Hilarious and informative .....only way to work. I’d love to get my hands on one of those spill proof funnels....I like that damned thing. I’d love to see a full stock jeep 4.0 engine rebuild video. Oh...subscribed by the way.
That was a frickin AWESOMELY AWESOME show guys ,thanks for all your hard work on your fabulous shows. Did you know that you're one of the most consistent channels on the tube👍👍😃always fantastic shows👍🌭🍺cheers.
Just watched this vid. Very much enjoy your channel. Did you make that rad cap with the yellow funnel insert or buy it somewhere? I already have one of the no-spill funnels but really like that filling cap. Where can I get one?
I got 1997 Grand Cherokee and it gets over heated pretty fast when going up a mountain with the Air Condition on.. The Mechanic guy I went to changed the fan engine and the radiator but still it got heated again. What else do I need to do to make sure this car never gets over 210f?
Tommy needs help hahaha - ok what's your thoughts on using the airlift to fill with, I don't use it always wondered by pulling a vacuum I might break something- Cheers guys 🍺🍺
Use it all the time at work. It's awesome and quick! Wanted to use this method for the video though, cuz it's something everyone can do without an expensive tool and a big air supply.
why would you buy premix? the prestone 50/50 from canadian tire is a dollar cheaper than the concentrate but why would you want to pay 8 bucks for half a gallon of water?
Some of the vehicle here just won't bleed easily but if they heat up a while you can shut down the engine and let the heat soak open the thermostat and watch it guzzle the coolant and then the full burp will occur...Love the show gents.
I have a 97 jeep Cherokee as well and I'm having problems with it while it's running if I give it to much gas too quickly it stalls out any suggestions of what could be the issue
pretty much the same. Raise the coolant above the engine to burp the system then level it off when youre done. Make sure the level is set correctly in the gas bottle. If not, that can lead to other issues.
@@stevenharden803 that would explain it. Did you just do that routine a couple of times to make sure all the air was out? Thanks for the reply too man. I appreciate it.
i really miss the good'ol days of the pabst boys roadhouse xj videos !
hope you all are doing well !
You two are exactly what I needed after a shitty week. Keep knocking it out.
Haha Awesome!
Comments like this are good for us after a shitty week too. Cheers!!
If that's what you needed, then your week was REALLY SHITTY.

Thanks for the video guys! Good stuff!
I was wounding the same thing why they didnt squeeze the return
Editing, timing, and knowledge. There's guys got good content.
Ok so I'm loving the videos , for my 97 4.0 xj , sending videos to my husband to know what to do on our day off.. y'all are awesome thanx
No worries.
Thanks for the comment!

Good video, just incase anyone else is still having air issues I found that putting the jeep up at 35 degree incline allowed coolant to reach the thermostat and heater core
To find 35 degrees here in Florida, I have to do like Elon does when he sends rockets to the moon! 😞
gracias amigos...
me encantan sus videos...
me han ayudado a ir poco a poco restaurando mi jeep cherokee
No Bueno Sinior. sorry
But thanks!!
that's that beer on his hands is hilarious 😂
Attention 4.0/2.5 owners a Gatorade bottle and a fair bit of duct tape works wonders for fluid changes
learned a lot about corrosive coolant on my wife's zj when she got it was rust colored and ate through a freeze plug
Damn!
I miss these guys!
Great vid, liked that fancy funnel too. Thanks for the lesson
Cheers Bud!
No Problem.
Can you do a video coolant flush for the xj?
As good as / as handy as that funnel method can be... it can get you into trouble if most of the air is not bled out first while filling. Thermostat opening will allow the rest to work it's way out... just a heads-up for your viewers.
Good point.
But thats what they did? They ran the heat and motor for 20 minuts. Long enough for the thermostat to open and work the air out?
"Lubricity is the measure of the reduction in friction and or wear by a lubricant. The study of lubrication and wear mechanisms is called tribology."
Man, that's a $3 word if I ever heard one. ($4 CDN just because)
That's a lot of Beaver Pelts!
Great video. Like many people, I've learned the hard way how Necessary! flushing your coolant is. Keep up the great work guys!
It's actually a pretty big deal.
Cheers Bud!
need some video of that Jeep doing something outdoors
Working on it.

Yeah, that's an old timey mechanic's trick. A lot of thermostats come with the hole in it already now.
Apparently NAPA auto parts doesn't sell thermostats with a tiny hole in them. No problem....I just used my agrarian ingenuity passed on to me by my grandfathers (both were farmers) and I took care of that.

Should be fine even after the thermostat opens. If it's surging when it opens, that's a good sign you have a cracked head or blown head gasket.
I want to see a video demonstrating proper, responsible disposal and storage of various automotive chemicals, including coolant, engine oil, break fluid, grease, and even stuff like anti seize, break cleaner, ect. I guess fuel and batteries and stuff too.
Cool little funnel. Can you guys do a video about death wobble?
Did a track bar episode, and covered a bunch of the steering in our over the knuckle episode

Welcome to the Roadhouse!!
Does anyone have a link to that burping kit? I bought one from Autozone a while back and the rads on these don't work with it :/
the funnel is an awesome tool to have but unfortunately most people who own them don't use them right...
How do they get it wrong? It's pretty straight forward.
Wow!
It never crossed my mind that someone would do that.....
Isn't when coolant going to flow thro the heater core even if the heat isn't on ?
can you burp an xj on flat ground or should you have the front end higher?
Great video guys! Entertaining and informative!

Did you completely let it cool and take in anyof the coolant or just plugged and pulled the funnel when the bubles stopped coming?

Just hoping we can upload on a more consistent basis.......LOL

Does it matter if my blower motor doesn't work? I put the heat all the way up and turn it on high but the blower motor only works while driving LOL..
Just watched this vid. Very much enjoy your channel. Did you make that rad cap with the yellow funnel insert or buy it somewhere? I already have one of the no-spill funnels but really like that filling cap. Where can I get one?
Does it work if your heater doesn’t work. The heater coil needs to be replaced or flushed
You guys must have to mop that floor ALL the time!
Naw,
That's how we disinfect it.
Yea I'm thinking a death wobble video would be great, maybe so modifications on the muffler? For people that like the lould sound
We'll put that in the line up.
Cheers Bud!
Wouldja don't?!
Good info guys, thanks.
No better info than "Wouldja Don't!"

Nice...vid..hey you Guys got anything on doing a heater core flush??
there's so many videos out there on that.
You guys are awesome... love the videos... can you do a heater core and blower motor replacement for the 4.0 Jeep Cherokee

lubricity... cavitation.. Hahaha, You use funny words :) Entertaining as always.
Gotta get down with the lingo...
Glad I have one of those funnels! great video guys!
Hells yeah!
Cheers bud!!
Wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of those funnels
Any auto parts shop can get one for you
Sweet. Thanks man.
Yo that coolant turn brown real quick I think y’all should’ve done a thorough cleaning of the system before adding that good ole green antifreeze
Would you do this the same way on the MJ to the surge tank if your radiator doesn't have a capm
Holding out on the "NECESSARY!" What gives? Nice vid. How about AC leaks?
We removed the A/C, but we might be able to cover that at one point.
if its not burped can it overheat within 4 min of driving ?
what coolant burping kit do you guys have? I can't find the right one for my 4.0 anywhere
won't the coolant get too got when burping the system? does the block coolant start moving when fan on rad turns on?
Did I miss this episode where you guys explain why Tommy does the "necessary" dance? You guys are great. I love the show!
Nope, that's totally random
Do you need to unscrew the coolant bleed while filling it up or leave it in there while the car is on burping itself?
luv this video very helpful and fun as well, thanks guys
Cheers!
Why not simply open a heater hose to bleed the air from the engine while it's warming up??
Headlight upgrade! or maybe some skidplates
Got some lights on the editing table right now
hahaha you guys are a trip. Id have a beer with yall
Excelentes vídeo, me ayuda mucho en mi jeep. Gracias PBR.
Gracias Amigo!!
Whats the make and model of that funnel set?
Do you guys get paid by blue ribbon? Hahaha
What hood louvers do you guys have?
I don't see much wheeling in the jeep though.... you guys ever drive it?
We will be doing some wheeling stuff soon. Been stuck in the Roadhouse mostly because of filming equipment, but it's in the works.
How did you wire your blower motor to a switch
So if my heat doesn't work what do I need to do? Its in the temp knob or something because even if the heat is "on" it still just blows ac
Sounds like the control unit needs to be replaced in the dash
why would you buy premix? the prestone 50/50 from canadian tire is a dollar cheaper than the concentrate but why would you want to pay 8 bucks for half a gallon of water?
TBH, actually feel kinda duped.
Didn't realize till we had it home and open.
no worries, I just thought it was odd. good how-to vid either way guys.
Cheers!!
Some of the vehicle here just won't bleed easily but if they heat up a while you can shut down the engine and let the heat soak open the thermostat and watch it guzzle the coolant and then the full burp will occur...Love the show gents.

That's a new one for me
Mostly in dual heater systems with a rear heater core...Cheers
Oh right.
Like a lot of the fully loaded 4Runners..
At 2:52, that kinda looks like me after taco bell
sweet video
Cheers!!
I have a 97 jeep Cherokee as well and I'm having problems with it while it's running if I give it to much gas too quickly it stalls out any suggestions of what could be the issue
Could be a lot of things, but start easy. Have a look at the fuel pressure. might just be a clogged filter or pickup.
+Pabst Boys Roadhouse yeah that's pretty much they only thing we haven't changed thank you for your suggestion much appreciated
No problem bud. Hope it works out.
do you have to have the rad cap on while doing this
rad cap is off
Open loop cooling systems will purge themselves. No need to burp.
how much gallons of antifreeze do y'all use.
It was roughly 11 liters, so what's that... 3 gallons?
3 gallons of 50/50 or straight?
what about a in closed renix system ?
pretty much the same. Raise the coolant above the engine to burp the system then level it off when youre done.
Make sure the level is set correctly in the gas bottle. If not, that can lead to other issues.
thanks guys!!!!!
You Betchya!
Awesome vid, thanks for the edumacation 🤣
man I want the hat keep up the great work
Wish they made more of them. This one's getting seshed
Why would you top off your reservoir? Its not a closed system, is it? I thought it was just a puke bucket.
Answered this question for ya in a video:

Thanks.
Can I borrow your funnel?
LOL!
Actually, this is not necessary at all if your radiator cap is working properly. 🤷🏼♂️
alright! Back to howto's. It's been awhile
This is a "How To".
But it is a small part of a bigger video that was running too long. Doing the edit right now. It'll be out soon...
what fenders are those?
Roadhouse Fenders.
We made 'em.
❤❤❤😂😂😊 thanks guys
What if my heater doesn't work?
You mean the fan doesn't work, or the heater core is gone?
What happen to spill free lmao 😅
