@@SupramanTRDYep I’ve done a GM L82 3100 (it’s what would have been in a 97-99 Malibu) and it’s annoying having to worry about the lower intake manifold. With an inline 6 that’s also a pushrod design (the GM car was too tho), it’s a much easier job than it could be. Plus for me, I’m pulling the drivetrain to do mine because I have a bunch of other things I need to do (flex plate, timing chain, might as well do the FMS, extracting some damaged fasteners, etc). That’ll make the job a lot easier too 👍🏻
I just wanted to say thank you, I'm in the middle of changing out my head gasket and I wouldn't have been able to do it without this video. I came to this channel pretty late with Tommy already being gone by the time I subscribed, but I just want to let you know every time I grab a wrench I've said, "SOCKEEETS....CHECK"
I watched this doing some business on the can while my kid was taking his bath. What I'm saying here is that it's nice having some great videos that I can watch with the volume up.
Wow. I had no clue a HG was THIS simple on an XJ.... so glad I got one! No where near as complicated as a full engine rebuild. Don't have to mess with timing or anything!!!
Shame on me for only finding your Channel today. Absolutely one-of-a-kind legendary. The both of you are awesome. And definitely keep up the great work.
I don't follow car mechanic videos. Blew a headgasket in my 1995 wrangler with the same 4.0. You just gained a sub from the quality and awesomeness of your video
Stuck at home because of COVID-19. Been meaning to do this for a while but haven’t ever gotten around to it. I guess now that I have nothing else to do, this will be the best time to change out my leaking head gasket. I don’t think I could do it without watching this video. My head bolts are the 12-point bolts, though, and I’m afraid I might strip them because they are torqued down so tight. The ones in the vid are 6 point.
About to finally take care of my slightly blown head gasket (came with it!) on my 04 Wrangler I bought and drive in Japan. Arigato gozaimashita for this video! Great visual and summary to help me understand that I do indeed need to drive it to another base with a hobby shop... not all military bases have hobby shops, which is BS! But now I'm glad I didn't start in the parking lot... also laughed my ass off watching this, so much appreciated!
Seriously you two are a blast. I stumbled upon your show because I am looking to do a DIY bumper. I don't even own a Jeep but I love watching your characters. Thanks!
I love the fact that you boiz are the Pabst Blues Brother of automobile engine service and repair! Back in the day, we would also be slugging down Pabst Blue Ribbon Lbr's whilst repairing our '68 Mustange Fastback or the '68 Mercury Comet 289 4BBL engines...oh yeah babbeee...anyway now I am not saying I can't still slam a few PBR pounders, and fix an engine or two, but my tastes have become a bit more refined....okay give me a bottle O' Jack, some PBR's, and a wrench, and I can still do damage control on most any BEAST out there probably though them years 91' and older..ha...Johnne in Seattle!
Thanks for the video guys! Aside from a library loaned Chiltons (I'm as cheap as you, lol) to get all the torque specs your video and a bunch of tools were all I used to get an XJ with a badly blown head gasket back on the road. Now to replace those warn out CVs up front. For reference, the quote from a local shop was $1300 for parts and labor and I did it for $200. Would have been a bit less but we broke a temp sensor getting the wires disconnected and took the opportunity to replace a very warn bearing on the idler pulley. No Tommy, I'm not sending you the savings to blow on PBR.
FANTASTIC video guys! I know this is from 2016, but I just blew my head gasket, and I need to replace it. Also, I don’t have like two G’s to have someone do it for me, so thanks again.
I've already done this repair myself--- it was before RUclips was very popular.. so I had to do it from an instruction manual. I felt pretty damn good about myself when I accomplished it.
Well done guys! That was the first thing I did when I got my 2001. No cracked head, but I got a Clearwater head on there so I don't have to worry later. The hardest part for the entire job was the manifolds disconnect/reconnect. My giant caveman arms couldn't fit. I went through a few cases of PBR the few days it took me to complete...
This is my favourite video from you guys so far. This seems like a daunting job, but now that I've seen it done it looks like something I'd want to try. :)
You guys are hilarious..Looks like you found your overheating problem...It was head gasket day for me too but no beer and no Tommy and no Jeep...Love the vids guys.
love the dewalt i use one daily as a mechanic going on 2 years no problems yet except the rubber over molding coming off but anyway all we see is you working on this thing lets see it in action
What a video! You guys made a tutorial super detailed and informative AND FUN! I almost cannot believe this clip only has 3590 views..... Keep on making such great video! Double thumbs Up for you guys :)
2 things i would do differently 1) instead of Teflon tape id use a thread sealant. Liquid or jell like. The tape can give the wrong torque on bolt what may seam to be right but the bolt has too much resistance. 2) sparkplugs, they are NGK in video. They work. But wrong temp rating. And these 4.0s just run champion or autolite better. I wouldn't put anything else in. Besides that great job! Loved it. Very good at focusing on key points of the process that most people question there first time doing a head gasket.
love the vids guys I'm actually doing this job to my XJ now just did the freeze plugs if I would have block tested before it would have saveed me the trouble of having to rip the out the exhaust and intake out again watched this video like 5 times .
AWESOMELY AWESOME!!!!!! You guys frickin kick ass!!! Love your shows😃😉👍. I had a farmers get together this last week and told everyone to check out your channel so I hope there will be a surge in your subs I hope😉🍻🌭🍺cheers.
As always such a great video! it seems my 1 month of learning Japanese didn't pay off after all hahah from what Tommy was saying i only understood something about it being beautiful lol well at least i caught to something ;) keep up the good work
Funny as shit, guys! I’m fairly competent and came across your video when trying to refresh before changing out the head on my ‘04 LJ. You hit everything important and left out all the bullshit. Kudos. And cheers!!!
Just bought a 2000 xj sport 4.0. Registered it and it overheated within 10 minutes of driving it. Pulled the thermostat, let it run again, still boils over within 10 minutes. Radiator seems fine,, fans work, relay works, fluid seems to be circulating... Head gasket you reckon?
btw can you show us how to waterproof our jeep? axles, distributor, air intake, ecu?? i mean, i dont want my jeep to become a submarine but some tips would be great, thanks folks
Great video but you really shouldn't use any type of sanding block or Emory cloth on the engine block. They used a very fine grit sandpaper and were careful, but they didn't stress enough the importance of keeping the block free from scoring. Just lightly use a razor blade to clear off all debris, blow out any holes with compressed air, and make sure you have a good flat surface for the new head gasket. Surface doesn't have to look brand new. Otherwise, this video is spot on.
Hello, I am a fan of your work in the repair of Cherokee and also I follow your work the moment of getting out on RUclips and ask you to explain the workings of the liquidation of the car, I am a person of note Arabic and admire you very Thank you.
That was fun to watch. The entertainment value of your videos are some of the best on RUclips. On top of that we learn stuff. Like Doughnuts taste like sugar. (ha ha)
fuel tank removal, sender and pump removal and replacement, fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator. if you have a 25 year old XJ, you likely have one or more of all these issues
This has to be among the easiest head gasket replacements I've ever seen
You have the pushrod design to thank for that. No timing components on the head. Even easier as an inline 6

God i miss these guys
GD, I don't even own a jeep and these guys are still better than most of my cable channels.
Hahaha
That's a good sign.
I literally got 10 seconds in and they definitely got my subscribe 🤣
King Tier comment🙏
Straight up subscribed within 45 seconds to a 7 year old video.
lol yeah and they haven’t up loaded in 6 years
God bless Chrysler for making this one of the easiest head gaskets to replace

You two are in a small group of Canadians that I truly enjoy watching.
Maybe it's because both of us are only partly Canadian.......
Shame on me for only finding your Channel today. Absolutely one-of-a-kind legendary. The both of you are awesome. And definitely keep up the great work.
Only watched through the intro, already subbed..
Wow this is genuine TV quality entertainment and I really hope you do well with this. Tommy's kitchen is incredible
Great video guys! That six cylinder engine is one of the best.
I don't follow car mechanic videos. Blew a headgasket in my 1995 wrangler with the same 4.0. You just gained a sub from the quality and awesomeness of your video
Ok, you guys are now one of my favorite channels, as I'm opening my pbr and watching the opening..
I did mine this pass week and I’m glad Jeep didn’t go to a overhead cam style cylinder head. Thanks for the video guys!!
Solid start boys! The man lifted a 4.0 head with one hand like it was nothing. I know that's not easy. Those suckers are heavy
It's 2021, and I miss them even more.
I do a show twice a week on twitch you can check out. Mon. & Thur. 7pm PST
m.twitch.tv/maximum__underdrive
I wish they still had this channel going and that the other dude didn’t leave cause the quality of there shows is soo good
This is the first head gasket replacement video I've ever watched and it looks like I can probably do it. Awesome video guys, subbed!
Thanks Bud!
The video was harder to make than the job. I assure you.

The only thing I'v been able to fine tune is cars, not my taste in beer.
Cheers Bud!!
LMFAO at the Mortal Combat noise when Tommy pops up in the out-takes.
That's where you aughtta do an uppercut in just the right place!
Then you get to fight Ermac!
it's "Mortal Kombat" with a K not a C
witnesszer0 You're right. My 90's-self is ashamed!!!!

Yep, subbed! Really like the way you work on the Jeep, in a hobby manner but also keeping it real when it comes to precautions.
Such a great video! Might be my favorite of yours so far.
Awesome!
Cheers Bud!!
it took me 18secs of watching this to like and subscribe.
That intro alone got me to subscribe!

would just like to let you know this video saved my ass yesterday... done on the side of the highway...
Dude you can't be serious? How long did it take you for the emergency?
Awesome.
Simply awesome!!
Honestly this looks fairly easy for a head gasket. At least a lot easier than more modern engines anyway.
Awesome video as always guys! definitely one of my favorites! keep up the great content! cheers!
