Here is why i am an xj fan:
-Exact same drivetrain as the tj but for about half the cost.
    - extra doors for more passengers and more cargo space.
-numerous were sold, parts be mad cheap.
-loads of aftermarket offroad parts/kits are availible too, so you can build a crazy crawler, or mud monster, or just a simple overlanding build. Literally whatever you want.
    -hella reliable

Not only the Liberty crossover (XJ was the last regular Cherokee SUV, after that they're crossovers to this day) was part of the Cherokee lineage, but it was called Cherokee overseas (let some of our overseas audience confirm you that). The 3.7L V6 that those Liberty had was not as good (but less fuel thirsty) as the I6's, but the (VM Motori 2.8L I4) CRD TD was even worse (that TD was put into overseas JK Wranglers).

The axles in the WJ were made lighter for on road fuel economy using aluminum casings, however were still reliable off road since the axle shafts are held in by bearing retainer plates. The bearings are pressed on the shafts themselves, unlike a weaker C clip axle that can easily let the shafts slide out of the casing if the C clip breaks. That was a performance feature borrowed from Borg Warner, since Dana ended up buying out Borg Warner. That's something to be on the lookout for, between a Dana 44 and Dana 44A axle, the 44A is made out of aluminum and doesn't have the hole in the hub to remove the bearing retainer plates.

I'm disappointed that they just closed over the KJ Liberty/Cherokee. They are far more capable off road then they get credit for and they reversed the slumping sales the Cherokee was experiencing given that by 2001 it was an ancient design that while popular with people that wanted to go off road was not making in roads with someone that wants a vehicle that is capable of handling rough terrain but is more comfortable on the road at the same time.

The XJ Cherokee was totally unrelated to the Liberty and was discontinued in 2001, I don't think they shared anything beyond a name and maybe some small parts bin trim or electrical components. The Liberty had a different un that was shorter and taller than the XJ. The Liberty used a Chrysler 2.4l I4 or 3.8l V6, mated to a Chrysler automatic transmission or an NV manual. All but the very first and very last XJs had an AMC 4.0l I6 or 2.5l I4, mated to an Aisin-Warner transmission. The Liberty had a front independent suspension and rear solid axle with a control arm/coil setup similar to the 2005 WK Grand Cherokee, while the XJ had two solid axles with a control arm/coil front and a leaf spring rear.
Wanna know another fun fact about the XJ? It was made by Jeep's Chinese division for their domestic market up until 2006, some with a raised roof and stretched wheelbase to enlarge the tiny backseat and act as a taxi or chauffeured vehicle. Starting in 2009 and continuing until 2014 another Chinese company restarted domestic production of the XJ as the BAW Qishi, but used older Nissian engine designs instead of the original AMC engines.

I recently picked up a 1988 jeep XJ less than a year ago. It’s best to absolute hell, rust everywhere… dings and dents, paint fading AND. 467,000 miles on the odometer (before it failed), the entire body around the 4.0 is falling apart, buts that motor has taken me to Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, Colorado and hasn’t failed me yet. And it’s probably worth 1,000 bucks. Best. Vehicle. Ever.

First jeep was an 86' xj. My dad passed it onto me in 2006. We put a combined 687000 km's on that beauty.

The grand cherokee zj is the 🐐. Luxury and comfort solid axles, coils front and rear, v8 options, as capable as the wrangler and xj cheaper than both. I love all 3 of mine

If it weren't for the low pinion front axle, the aluminum dana 44, and the transfer case theyd be perfect. easy to swap those out with better ones though

That's right! THE UGLY DUCKLING Cherokee crossover (fortunately they're changing this year its' worse feature, the TOO SMALL headlights...).

Avrage Trinidadian, if you look closely most of the compact or smaller crossovers they will look like the one that was the MOST SUCCESSFUL of the bunch among themselves, so you can confuse between several competitors.
Problem is FCA seemed to TRY TOO HARD with the Cherokee crossover, while the smaller Renegade has been far more successful on BEING DIFFERENT ENOUGH from the small bunch, even to the point that they're willing to go EVEN SMALLER to the new Suzuki Jimny (successor to our Samurai) footprint.
