I’m doing my first ever mechanic work it’s on a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with the in-line 6 4.0 liter think I said that right so far I replaced the thermostat radiator hoses water pump and fan clutch have it torn down for the head gasket to be done now
Great production quality. Hey- it looks like the Crankshaft position is RIGHT THERE when you take this thing out, so it's probably a good time to swap that out if yours is old
Looks like we'll be doing it again along with the head gasket job coming up....LOL Thanks for replying to my comment on your channel. Just subbed. Cheers bud!!
Cool, Thanks! Replied 9 months later. Took me a while to think of the right thing to say. Haha!! Sorry bout that. Was reviewing old comments and saw it. Sometimes I fall behind. I'll be watching for your next vid!
Hey!! Great video, great tips. Got one I'd like to share: I learned real quick to bolt the manifold down to a 1/4" piece of plate steel to avoid warping. Use your gasket as a template. You guys rock! Thanks for all your videos!!
APN header? Might end up doing just this. Since mine is leaking from the same points. Love how you guys just twirled the intake on top of the valve cover, saves time with disconnecting the injectors!
Pretty entertaining video, and I have to replace my exhaust manifold, I picked one up at a junkyard for $20, Cracked in the exact same place. You made it look easy. lol. Thanks for the video
Hey guys I may have 2 do this. Fan does not come on so white smoke comes from radiator, coolant over flow tank is full and full when i open the thermostat (where i can put water if need be). but I do have faint white smoke from tail pipe. How can I test to see if It is a head gasket I need. I saw ur video on this. U guys are great!! a girl fixing alone. will try .
ok guys on the Walker gasket and studs, did you replace those with regular bolts? You guys should do a video on replacing that front pipe to the exhaust manifold! There's no any good ones out yet! Enjoyed the vid as always!😎👊
Hey brother I tackled this task all alone and with that I also changed the head gasket. Everything was done to bolt pattern and torque specs. Now when I crank it up it revs up to 5000 rpms. Any insight on what could be the issue
Steve sent me. Which one of you is the University English professor and who's the crab fisherman on Lake Manitoba. We got lots of crab in Lake Erie but they got to grow a little. They're only about 3 inches big. Gona back track and check you guys out, looks good. Doug -SW Ontario
+Douglas Laramie OMG Bud! Steve Rob had us dying with the fake back stories!!! I also grew up in SW Onterrible, and Tommy's from the Karaoke Capital of the world. BC livin' these days....
Use a stubby ratchet and a 2 in extension stand on a milk crate and you can get your arm in between the manifold and block from the front as long as the power steerimg pump has been removed I know this was an old post but incase others are reading with the same problem I posted an answer anyway
Did you guys flux core weld it or use gas? I’ve heard flux core was good for fixing cracks giving the weld more flexibility so it won’t crack in the same spot so to say, but idk if flux or gas would be better on exhaust. What’d you guys do or have any tips or tricks?
Really appreciate the video. Did you guys run into any issues getting the bolts out of the head? I'm afraid I'll have to cut the ones near collector flange.
lets see you guys build a custom snorkel. I did one on my 91xj, runs up through cowl and into a humvee style stack on passenger side, cost me about $70 in the end
I think there's a misprint on the torque pattern display you used. I believe the spec for bolts 6 and 7 are 23 N.m (17 ft. lbs), not 23 ft. lbs. I'm by no means an expert, so I could be wrong.
+JonDinCT This is from a service manual, so if it's a typo, all us mechanics have been doin' it wrong for years... But to be honest, the difference between 17flbs and 23flbs on a steel head is negligible. Thanks for the comment though.
Jeeeejjjj a new video thanks guys always fun to wach I have seen a limited slip diff in the front axel of a volvo 740/240 something for you guys to try ? Keep up the good work 👍
Hey bud how close is your header to the oil pan. Installed a new header and it's sitting against the engine block. Company says they've never seen the problem. Any help would be appreciated
great videos keep them up. how could you tell you needed to repair the manifold? could you here it or was there a loss of power? I have a 95 yj and there seams to be a tick I cant tell if it is a cracked manifold or a bad lifter. it goes away after fully warmed up.
i think i might have something similar mine is really loud when i start it and the noise stays loud until it warms up. it almost sounds like a valve tap, but it goes away after it warms up. does this sound like a manifold issue?
Crane 2005 it does. I see the same thing on ford trucks, where an exhaust manifold stud will snap off and have the same symptoms. It's really common for them.
the cold air being sucked into those cracks is said to, over time cause warping of the head, but that's just what a few people have told me, it could be an old wives tale.
Pretty sure Mitchell is right about the CO. Knowing the effects of CO poisoning I know that the cracks on my manifold I am getting poisoned. Now that it's winter and I can't keep the windows down I'm gonna have to fix it...
Tony Saprano mine did the same thing. My mechanic friend said that it’s the weight of the exhaust fatigues the manifold over time. He says that once it cracks, it’s in a better position. When the cracks are welded, it’s in a better position with less stress. Or something like that. He wasn’t allowed to weld a customer’s manifold so he’d weld the broken ones and install them for friends when theirs cracked.
That was a great video and now I know Pabst Blue Ribbon is a good conductor of stupidity. And like the old Gi Joe cartoons used to say, "knowing is half the battle". Wish I could like these videos over and over but......
I recently got a death wobble and discovered a mechanic broke the steering adjuster pin and put a seam on it, so after asking around apparently I had to machine the hole to fit a new pin, so instead I fixed the shady job by my own shady job of putting flat nuts and to close it I used a non threaded screw metal thingy and bent it, I know the pain of being on budget my friends.
Sure do miss the Jeep videos
Man, miss these guys. Great collection of XJ vids for the tube though.

Yarp.
Oliver all chrystlers are loke that
I think fixing the existing header was a good choice.
+saha6818
Agreed.
This vid is too good, the torque pattern diagram is an excellent addition. An actual DIY video people can understand and follow!
We do what we can.
Like to ad stuff that we dont see in other DIY videos, like humor.
Excellent demonstrations
I'm going to start this tomorrow. What is the probability of breaking the bolts off in the head or block? That's the scariest part for me.
APN header?
Might end up doing just this. Since mine is leaking from the same points. Love how you guys just twirled the intake on top of the valve cover, saves time with disconnecting the injectors!

And the Throttle cables.
All about savin' time
Fun to watch... You guys should make a video replacing freeze plugs

You guys are amazing
Great video, I was about to shit my pants when I thought it was just about buying an expensive header, good one guys!!
Thank you guys for making this very helpful as I will need to replace my manifold soon.
Cheers!
Glad to help.
Do you guys have any videos or recommendations where to look for taking off a 94 jeep wrangler 2.5l exhaust my intake look a bit different than yours
pabst blue brought me here hahahah! everyone has the exact same crack in the exact same place usually due to engine mounts and no flex or bellows
+1trucavalier
Yeah,
It's pretty common.
Cheers Bud!!
"Awesome!" Thanks!
Banks Exhaust headers are worth the additional coin
can you guys do an episode on setting pinion angle with adjustable control arms?

We have something in the works for that.

Awesome!
Steve Rob's vid about us was hilarious!!
good job tommy.
Could you reach ALL the bottom bolts with the extension from the top ? or did you have go underneath to get a few ? Thanks
ok guys on the Walker gasket and studs, did you replace those with regular bolts? You guys should do a video on replacing that front pipe to the exhaust manifold! There's no any good ones out yet! Enjoyed the vid as always!😎👊
Man you guys are funny
I'm surprised no kits come with a downpipe with a flex pipe. I just swapped mine recently and trying to get a flex pipe on sooner than later.
+downnoutdubin
havent seen a kit like that, but you're right.
It would beat the crappy collector doughnut. (Where it is meant to flex)
Hello guys, is this done the same way on a WJ 2001 grand cherokee 4.0 6 cyl..?
Hey brother I tackled this task all alone and with that I also changed the head gasket. Everything was done to bolt pattern and torque specs. Now when I crank it up it revs up to 5000 rpms. Any insight on what could be the issue
Vacuum leak on intake gasket or unplugged vacuum line somewhere most likely

Any suggestions on how to get the 2 manifold bolts out of the bottom side of #4 and #5? On my 2001 XJ there are 2 catalytic converters in the way.

We'v got a few ideas.....
Thanks guys!
Instant sub. Thank you. Nice Gwar T
Hey fellas, just bought a 2000 grand cherokee laredo. Will this header fit? Cant seem to find one for this model. Thx
I seen you had a backlash caliber on the table, doing any axle rebuild kits? Or re gear? Great fun video guys!
+Jacob Jensen
Just the holder. My gauge is busted.
don't worry though. we will cover that.
Really appreciate the video. Did you guys run into any issues getting the bolts out of the head? I'm afraid I'll have to cut the ones near collector flange.
I know this is an older video but I subbed just because of the intro haha
On my XJ the collector bolts are on super tight and I live in Pennsylvania so there is probably 5 inches of rust on it. Have any tips?
Might put some washers to space out the end of the exhaust manifold :)
Not sure how ya mean.......
What header do you guys recommend?
also you guys make removing the intake easy loll
lets see you guys build a custom snorkel. I did one on my 91xj, runs up through cowl and into a humvee style stack on passenger side, cost me about $70 in the end
Like that.
We'll work on it.
I'll send ya some pictures, you guys can let me know what ya think
steven taylor Sure!
Post them to us on our facebook page
126 lbs for no.6 and no.7 bolts....... You are very welcome

I think there's a misprint on the torque pattern display you used. I believe the spec for bolts 6 and 7 are 23 N.m (17 ft. lbs), not 23 ft. lbs. I'm by no means an expert, so I could be wrong.

Shouldn't be like that.

what would happen if you never fixed your cracked exhaust manifold?
the cold air being sucked into those cracks is said to, over time cause warping of the head, but that's just what a few people have told me, it could be an old wives tale.
It'll kill gas mileage and also could get into the vehicle and you'll be breathing in carbon monoxide

You're correct. And, add to that list it may trigger the engine light and fail emissions testing.
About how long did this take you minus the welding part?

Did the whole job in an afternoon.

How did you bypass your abs pump
How long did it take ? and why do they crack ? Thanks guys

Weight.
Heat cycles .
Exhaust taking a bump.
Different engine and trans mounts.
No exhaust flex.
Etc
Spent that last coin on that snap on wrench
This video was a first impression for me. Love guys already. Sub'd
They all break, Edelbrock, Doug Thorley, oem, etc etc. I have the fix though.
You're right. They do.

That would make a good video. Or series of videos......
I'm having a huge vacuum leak in my Jeep after a head gasket repair. I'm tied
Thats exactly what happened to me, except I waited 2mths and bought a Gibson header. So now I have 3 headers :) :(
