Best 4.0L thermostat replacement video on RUclips, no contest. Unfortunately, the ZJ belt makes it harder than the XJs, but everything else is the same.
I just did mine the other day on my Cherokee. Another tip is make sure you torque it down correctly! I cannot recall the torque but it's somewhere around 17ft/lb. Alternate tightening of the two bolts or else you will crack the waterneck.
drilling the thermostat is great on older vehicles man I am glad I have California plates does Illinois plates really kill the gas mileage... beautiful skiing thanks for a great video
You said to mount the sticky side of the gasket to the engine block, then you proceeded to mount the sticky side of the gasket to the removable housing. Which is it?
Hello.... I have been driving jeeps for the longest and I wouldn’t trade this model, the motors are great . I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee, I believe I’m the second owner and it’s at 280,000 miles and it’s still running pretty good. 🙃Regarding your license plate are you considering having one from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 we are not a state but we are territory of America and we are Americans... let me know... thank you for your videos.
I couldn't tell if you had one from Colorado or not very nice video very well detailed I'm an ASE Master certified automotive technician you showed the exact way I put those together and that is how I teach all of my up-and-coming technicians we have to share the wealth and we have to learn something new everyday otherwise and we're just one of The walking Dead like the rest of the world out there thank you.
As usual great video content and great attitude there young man. And, Brian, we know you got here because of a great family supporting you. And on top of all that we get to see great BFATE of you going down hill and then going back up for another try downhill again. Good Ski Viking this time I guess we'll get more Sky Viking on your next production - toot your horns of plenty.
Wish I'd seen this first, my thermostat dropped like youd mentioned and it leaked, like you mentioned and didn't realize it because of the thermostat and gave it an extra tighten and broke the top bolt off in the motor
Hey. Thanks for the video. I actually saw this video some time ago and somehow remembered that someone somewhere at some point ..... had said to drill a little hole in the top of the thermostat if the new one doesn't have a hole. I just said "a hole " in reference to a gas hole. Anyway, it worked in my 4.0 xj recently and I happened to just stumble upon the video at HEY, it was You. Thanks for real. I also just got my antique forever licence plate (1998 model) so Ii have a Mississippi tag for you! Where do I send it (if you still want one)
Thanks Brian. I installed a new tstat and housing and the damn Jeep hasn't gotten to operating temperature since. It runs rich so not only is it guzzling gas but its probably fouling up my spark plugs! Greetings from New England
You give me hope that I may be able to fix our new car one day. I've fixed my own vehicles since I got my first car back in 1986. I had to remove the engine cover to check power steering fluid the other day. WTFiddlesticks? Stoopid cars...
Awesome! What's an "engine cover?" Don't you mean idiot hood? The plastic hood the idiots require to fool other idiots that there aren't any moving parts or wires?
It actually makes it more bearable to function at life. I'm in such a good mood by the time I come back to town that I can put up with pretty much anything.
There's no skiing left here unless you caught it on film or hike into a patch in a wilderness area. I'm still waiting for the snow to melt off Bomber Peaks West face so I can finally do my B-25 crash video.
just think about how much Salt they use here in Illinois in the winter time..it's the only way these plates can hold up as much they use..I'm just a few miles away from him.
On these w/out jiggle pins, I'd instead drill "two" micro-sized (½ size of original presumed hole) holes on opposite ends for better/even area coverage🤔👌 "ya know how they do computer processors; cut the speed but double the cores, efficiency maybe?😉"
Hi BriasMobile1.....greetings from Caracas/Venezuela.....this kind of tips/tricks is what I was looking for.....I own the same car here and I need to re-install the thermostat. You have hit 2 special points : the "necessary hole valve" and the "fall issue" at the moment to seat the thermostat. BTW, it is sufficient opening only 1 hole to the thermostat ??? Thanks again.... Saludos....
If you are in HOT Weather, you can By-Pass it and SAVE $$$$... I have Video in my Channel and Test Video too, check it out. It might be useful to you :D
One of these threads someone said the torque for those bolts is 15 ft/lb. Do they go into the water jacket, or are they blind holes? Edit: This says 13 Ft/lbs www.torkspec.com/torkspecme.aspx?KI=69-4.0L-242ci-S6
love your videos buddy. I wonder how your videos will look if you make them 360 or 3D I'm sure they would look great as if your fan is actually there with you.
Hey, can I ask where you ski at? Are you using blades? Man, I really want to go skiing especially seeing as how you make it look so easy. Take it easy.
That was Sundance resort before it sold to a hotel company. This Season I'll be at Snowbird. Skis are 177cm Nordica Ignition. If you see me up there, say hi!

Me too, but 32 plus 18 is 50 and I counted. How can it be? Ahh, he must have same one in both lists somewhere. Was only looking for colorado and not repeats.
You should never use rtv gasket on anything water, water pump or thermostat if ya ain’t steady enuf or don’t have enuf patience you shouldn’t be doing it anyways rtv will ruin your radiator little pieces will squeeze out and go through the block to radiator and clog it up. Kinda the whole reason for a gasket shouldn’t use gasket maker if it comes with one
I hear you. If you're using it as an adhesive or sealant (sparingly) you won't have it stray. Good point to make, but with the P.R.S. it sticks like hell and it's tough. It's not going anywhere. I'm just getting good at this. Just over 30 years of experience/success doing it this way with this product. I just wish it wasn't so dang expensive now.
The Québec license is from me. My name is Gabriel Nadeau from Brossard. I saw confusion and an star on the bord🤔. haha. I hope to receive your pliers. keep up your good job. -Gab
THANK YOU! The star means it's outside the US. (bonus awesome hence the star) I sent the push pin pliers out about four days ago. Hopefully you'll get them this week if customs goes well. : )

I use the loctite stuff which works well as its a anaerobic setting compound so that which squeezes get diluted. Utah is just a lightweight lol
Yes you can but it will affect your gas mileage And if you live in a state where gets really cold your engine will never reach the normal temperature and your gas mileage will be less Not only that your heater won't work properly when it gets really cold. I am about to replace the thermostat in my jeep The engine temp gets up to 125 degrees in stead 210 degrees and I have no heat I only get cold air when its cold around 0 out side
Hey Brian. Got a (possible) challenge for you'all. Check your buddy's 2000 Jeep XJ 4.0 cuz he might have what appears to be a minor rear main seal leak (most 4.0's do), but in fact it could be coming from the oil filter adapter "o" rings. Fun part? I believe on '97-'01 XJ's, Jeep used a T60 torx bolt to secure the adapter to the engine block and the passenger side motor mount is in the way. So if you know of, or can figure out a Tip & Trick, that'd be awesome! Great videos btw - thanks!

Ha ha!
Easy sand, the whole area down then put the gasket, then tighten. It will seal perfectly. Do not use no sealer.
That is the biggest hole you should ever do ? So what size is it ? 1/8--1/16 ?
You said to mount the sticky side of the gasket to the engine block, then you proceeded to mount the sticky side of the gasket to the removable housing. Which is it?
I'm year late, but the gasket isn't symmetrical. It SHOULD be made sticky side to the block, but it's not made that way.

Jack up the front axle a few inches instead of spilling the antifreeze.
Why does a jeep or any vehicle in 4 wheel drive feel like its broken on the front end when you turn?
use a rubber band to hold the thermostat in the housing then cut when done
Thanks for the tip!

Yes
