I am beyond THRILLED that you love Michoacán the way that I do. It is everything that you described. It has a depth and richness in culture, history, food, arts, and amazingly warm and friendly people. We were in Uruápan last Easter for the enormous artesanías Concurso (try and be there some time for that-vale la pena) where artisans from all over Michoacán gather to show the best of their handicrafts, food, music, dance. There is a judged show with absolute show stopper exhibits. It was OVER THE TOP! Absolutely loved it. We visited many of the same places that you did and enjoyed a meal at Gratissima; love everything avocado. You two are the best!!! Your sensitivity and appreciation of the culture matches my own. Oaxaca always holds a special place in my heart but Michoacán runs even deeper into my soul. Really look forward to your Día de Muertos video; am hoping you can dig deeper than Janitzio which is so overcrowded. So many wonderful spots to celebrate this very heart opening time. Hire a driver and let him take you around to some of the out of the way cemeteries that are so special and not so packed with tourists. Sending you muchos abrazos…

Nice of you to highlight Uruapan. It’s my parents home town where all of our relatives still live. My parents were the only two from their large prospective families that moved to the states. We were there for a week in August and this time last year. It’s definitely a hidden gem. Have some hot chocolate Moctezuma made only in Uruapan.

The banana trees that you see in the park are very special, the fruit has big seeds. It is the original banana. Probably it was brought to Mexico many centuries ago with slaves from Africa.

I’m so happy to see you guys in my state! I haven’t been to Uruapan in AGES! It looks better than I remember (I was a kid too haha). I hope you get to see other parts of the state that are worth a visit like Zamora and Cotija (near Jalisco), Tlalpujahua (where my family first settled to work the mines) and nearby El Oro in Estado de México, as well as Maravatio and the Colombian town of Ucareo and nearby Los Azufres which is a beautiful lake surrounded by trees as well as lake Cuamecuaro! Have a great time in Michoacán! My home state! :)
