The fact that Pixar decided to cover topics like having a period as well as the dangers of intimacy at a young age (despite the fact that these are only Mei's fantasy drawings and not real, yet Ming is still overprotective and misinterprets the situation) is AMAZING. I never knew how badly I needed to see an ACCURATE depiction of being a tween girl - goofy, sincere female friendship, dealing with periods, crushes and fangirling, absolutely all of it.
There are so many films involving boys’ coming-of-age, from Stand By Me to Luca and they are incredible, too - along with plenty of joking about the grosser stuff (cough American Pie and Co cough). But when has there been such an accurate, true and honestly humanising look at the same for girls? Why is it that what’s considered gross for boys is less taboo than what’s considered gross for girls?
I had never even realised until seeing this movie just how much has been blatantly missing from representations of girls’ experiences in film. So much of our presentation centres on desirability, either having it or not having it, so finally, FINALLY seeing what it’s actually like to simply exist from our own perspective/memories of lived experience is shocking. Growing up isn’t all about learning to be mature, beautiful, driven or desirable - all acceptable traits of womanhood. It’s also messy, funny, awkward, gross, and full of evolving relationships.
On a really basic level, Turning Red puts to film what every woman already knew: tween girls are just as gross, goofy and connected as tween boys. Its existence goes further and makes a stand for something we might have hesitated to believe: tween girls are just as deserving of having those experiences recognised.
Thank you to all who made this film for creating something so true, so real - so hopeful.
Reposting bc hopefully can explain a bit to ppl who got the ick from it lol

It does it all beautifully, and it's just fun and refreshing and cute. I've noticed Disney have shied a bit away from all their grand adventure films in favor of smaller, simpler things recently, but what's so bad about that? It's still charming and sweet, and honestly built for gen z and younger millennials. So why do people hate it?

As a 29 year old, I have a bit more nostalgia towards boy bands than the 00's anime craze in North America. Sailor Moon was the first Japanese cartoon i ever enjoyed and i have my 3 minutes younger brother to thank. The 3rd act takes the small emotional stakes to the next level. This movie literally shows what needed to be shown in media, it needs to be normalized, and yes it's a natural occurrence that happens to everyone as they hit a certain age. It also gently opens the discussion between parents and kids about these subjects, because not everyone gets these kind of talks with their parents because there's no respect between parent and child by assuming _"Kids are too young to learn about this and won't understand."_ Kids will understand a lot more than you give them credit for, no kid likes to be talked down to in a condescending baby voice, you have to be real with them, and talk to them like you would any normal person with the same kind of respect. I've always hated that when growing up myself, so I understand how it feels, whenever I tried to talk about a serious topic as a child, I'd always be talked down to in a condescending tone from an adult, and made to feel like my say, my voice has no meaning or weight in what I said. -- Sure kids can do stupid things, but don't ignore the fact that they can understand the things you talk to them about, because if you don't respect them, they won't respect you, and/or trust you to come talk to you about issues they're having, especially about subjects like puberty which is a huge change in their life they need guidance and support on the most.

I want to say that I suspected that the creative forces driving the making of this film were female when I immediately saw that the subject matter was so distinctly female centered. But I never looked at the credits, which if I were really curious about that, I probably would have. I normally watch the credits trying to see if I recognize anyone on the crew. I find it especially thrilling when I do! This time I didn't, and I could blame the fact that I was watching with my daughter and her daughter, but I am not throwing them under the bus.
I love this movie. My favorite part was when Mei's mom confused her Red Panda for her first menses. I remember both of my girls getting theirs. My wife and I weren't nearly as well prepared as Ming. Not physically, anyway. I was emotionally prepared, so hurray for small victories. As much as I tried to help, neither of my girls were ready to accept my assistance in this matter. I was relegated to running to the pharmacy at 3:00 AM for supplies. I was happy for whatever value I could add. But I LOVED the support team Mei had between her mom and her friends. That warmed my heart.

Turning Red is a fantastic movie and I'm so happy Pixar covered and normalized these topics that are often rarely talked about. The negative reviews about people not being able to connect to it are exhausting. All of us have gone through puberty and our own versions of generational trauma of trying to please our parents over our own happiness and it's so easy to relate to these characters. We've seen many movies where that focus on the male perspective and I'm glad that this openly discusses the female journey. I can't wait to see where Domee Shi goes from here, being the first woman to direct a short film and the first woman with sole director's credit on a feature film for Pixar! About damn time.

Turning Red is not only a good Pixar movie, but is really unique. I like the 2000's element cause now EVERYBODY (including me) is talking about how freaking great the 2000's Era was. Also, I think this is halfway or almost close to a Teen (13 age) movie for pixar.
And I might be a male, but I actually really like the girls in Turning Red, they're just themselves and they're really unique, and Tyler is the only male in the female party, kinda like is reverse team gender party role. I also like the anime-like eyes and expressions also.

@@ARCtheCartoonMaster yes I know that. But I was talking about how There's only one boy in a girl's team. Like a reserved gender-party like for this: If you watch One piece or Bleach, then cool anyway: There's only three or four girls in Straw Hats, and only 2 females in Ichigos team. Even Sonic the Hedgehog on Team Sonic is mainly Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles but also Amy. And she's the only female in the males team. That's what I talking about. But let me know if there's something I need to know. (Not being sarcastic by the way.).

The biggest thing I noticed was that they actually said curses. It’s a movie that’s kind of targeted towards younger children, so it’s not everyday you hear a Pixar character cuss

I've rewatched this movie so many times now. Loved everything but especially when she's dancing and gyrating to irk her mom. Her friends constantly having her back make them the best. Abby is my fav. Though.

The movie was so good I watched it twice. I have a 2-year-old nephew who likes this film because of the red panda that he finds funny.
Director Domee Shi did a splendid job in directing her first full-length feature for Pixar. It makes the concept of female adolescence and family lifestyles from an Asian perspective feel normal and nothing to be embarrassed about.
The red panda design is clearly a nod to Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro, while the transformation of becoming a red panda and reverting back is reminiscent to the comedic nature of Ranma 1/2.
