For me Meg and Esmeralda are the most underrated disney characters of all history. They are strong and independent woman, much more than most of the disney princesses
“Move along Junior!” “I’m a damsel. I’m in distress. I’ve got this!” “Oh, you know how men are. They think ‘no’ means ‘yes’ and ‘go away’ means ‘take me, I’m yours’ “
Kida and Esmerelda were criminally underrated! Since Kida was actually a Princess, I don’t understand why they didn’t make her an official Disney Princess. And Meg, The Queen of Sass!
I agree! Kida was an actual princess and yet she gets hardly recognition and same with the Welsh Princess Eilonwy who later became known as the lost princess
Sadly it's because of the almighty dollar. Atlantis didn't make a big box office hit so she doesn't get the title. She deserves to be an "official" princess however. I also think Esmeralda should get it. The movie made lots of money. She's human. And she did an act of heroism (helping fight for her people and helping Quasimodo). All three are requirements to get the princess title.
@@nekoisme4087 Truly underrated, indeed. 😥 She is actually my favorite. When I had a towel of The Lion King. I always folded it so that it showed off her. She is so regal looking and how she always carried herself.
Nani Pelekai it’s very underrated being a single parent putting all her dreams on hold so that she can take care of her little sister but at the same time she never lets Lilo worry about anything she always lets her imagination grow and lets her be a child
That’s why when she lost her job she told her the story about the manager being a vampire so that she could not feel bad about anything and still be a kid

Also, the 'Sanctuary!' scene when Quasimodo climbs up to the balcony and lift Esmeralda up.. I have an old Disney Adventure's magazine that said that the 'Sanctuary' scene was so complex, it almost broke the computer system! I think Megara was a far more fascinating character than Hercules with such an intriguing backstory. I liked the songs in the film, but if she had been the protagonist, it would have been such a better movie. Just my opinion.
you should 100% read Go The Distance by Jen Calonita. it's a part of the Twisted Tales series that focuses around Megara and what happened after the original Disney tale.
Eee! So happy Jane Porter is in the Top 5! I love her character. Sure, she's completely out of her element, but she's also very kind, intelligent, caring, and helps Tarzan to rescue his mother. She's a wonderful character!
Wait wait wait wait a minute. This video just made me realize that Joy has blue hair. All of the other female emotion characters have hair that matches the rest of their color. But Joy has blue hair because SADNESS IS A PART OF JOY. Wow.
I remember having a little toy figurine of one of the lady singers in Hercules when I was really young. I brought her everywhere and called her "pretty girl" and thought she was cartoon Beyonce lol
22:10 fun fact: in the Italian version of Mulan Grandma Fa is voiced by Lina Wertmüller, the 1st female director ever nominated for the Oscar for best directing back in 1977 for Seven Beauties.
Honestly the writing in regards to Meg's character deserves a lot of credit, she is so complex and is hands down the best character in Hercules after Hades. Her whole story in the film is so interesting and poetic from start to finish. She became a cynic after the person she loved and saved betrayed her, and it went full circle when she ended up betraying another person she came to love which felt a lot worse. Her redemption made her the real hero of that film, cause it was through her that Hercules finally understood what it meant to be a true hero.
Jim's mother also deserves more love and I completely agree Treasure Planet is under appropriated, I remember how much I loved it. Esmeralda was a Disney princess until 2005 or 2006.
20- Might be a mouse but she’s full of hope 19 -She’s a leader and feminine as a tough cat but who doesn’t love Emma Thompson? 18 -As the first warrior princess and being the very oldest, she’s strong and pretty good. 17 -As the voice of Neeve Campbell, I love this sequel when I was a kid. I love his daughter’s story. 16 -Shouldn’t you say she’s a mother? I love this film ever since it was in theaters. Stylish and open heart. 15 -Another mother and she’s a great character! 14 -Makes sense but she’s funny and it was sweet to save Riley. 13 -Yeah okay, I get it but first off it’s based from a real life lovebirds. 12 -Not a princess, she’s a cranky scary looking angry purple lady. Though I do like her Kronk. 11 -She’s great. Unlike other Disney females, she’s like a new Toph but more great even with a fast funny style. 10 -Love this film! Might be a Lion but isn’t lying to see that she can be a princess. 9 -Might be confused but she tries hard to get out of a “dream” even the live action Alice. 8 -I love her!! She’s too funny for me! Her backstory song is so tearful but she is adventurous. 7 -Love the movie and hey, they have killer voices!! I just love the sassiness and the songs! 6 -Like Hiro and Tadashi, these sisters try everything to be family in problems and crazy fun times. 5 -Might be a princess but there’s a reason why she’s forgotten, she’s not that famous but got to agree, she knows how to take the lead. 4 -Sometimes I find her as the granddaughter of Belle. She and Tarzan make a great couple! 3 -Didn’t know that but is highly sassy. Love her song other than What Can I Do (For You) in Steven Universe. 2 -Her Status is a gypsy but she’d make a great princess. Might be in a dark film but she’s passionate, strong and beautiful. 1 -I can see why. Might not be in the live action film but doesn’t anybody want to see a prequel of this funny grandma?
I remember when I was small I liked Hunchback of Notre Dame and still do and the reason was Esmeralda. I loved her character idk if it was how they made her character or because my name is Esmeralda or both.
Every one of these entries is pure gold! It's always been one of my personal pet peeves that Kida has never been made an official Princess (she's an ACTUAL princess and an amazing character besides!). Yzma is definitely the best Disney villain for me, hands down. Nala and Kiara are my queens forever (Kiara never gets enough love). Jessie's song was the first time I cried at a Pixar movie; ugly cried, in the theater. And I'm not gonna lie: one of my biggest childhood disappointments was reading Greek mythology and learning the Muses weren't actually five sassy sexy Black ladies. This is the kind of list, full of nostalgia and great short analysis, that makes me love Ms Mojo 😊
I love this list! I think Wendy from Peter Pan could be a contender, as well as Moana's grandmother. It was nice to see so many characters that are TRULY underrated on the list.
Loved Megara. Similar to Esmerelda in that she has more connections to the villain than the hero at first, but unlike Esmerelda Meg's desperation to escape Hades' control actually drives her to do the wrong thing for a while before making her mind up for good. Hades is right about one thing: she IS a fabulous actress.
Jane Porter has always been one of my major animated crushes of all time. When other media just talk about the Disney Princesses, even though Mulan isn't technically one, they never appreciated some lovable "normal disney ladies" as well. It's nice to see that she is so high on this list :)
Nice choices! I agree on Kiara, Yzma, GoGo Tomago, Jane Porter, Megara and Esmeralda. Hopefully to see a Top 20 Underrated Disney Male Characters someday.
When I read the title the first person I could think of was Maya Hart, from Girl Meets World. I think she is the most realistic character Disney ever had. Just like Shawn, she confronts real problems. They show the suffering of the ones that are not so promoted. The ones that go through a parents divorce, those who are different and try to be accepted despide that fact, because this world is full of prejudice. In most of Disney movies and series the characters look so "perfect" and their problems resume at growing up, having a boyfriend/girlfriend, popularity, while Maya confronts the real world, our world.
I love Maya and Shawn. And the fact that my parents are divorced and have been for...like almost 12 years makes it really easy for me to empathize with Maya. I have great relationships with my parents (mostly my dad) but that doesn’t change the fact that they aren’t together. And I’m not as hurt by it as I was a few years ago but it does still hurt
I know it does, but the fact that you get along with both of them makes it easier. Later, with time, you will realize that it was better for both of them to divorce if they felt that the marriage didn't work, and being separated doesn't change their love for you, and you should suport them if they want to be happy on separate ways.
All these picks were amazing. Especially Kida, Go Go, and Captain Amelia. They were such cool fighters. And Jane had such a desire to learn about her new surroundings. And was a great artist. I mena she drew Tarzan perfectly only after seeing him once.
This is a fun list and I agree with the choices here. Wish you could expand on certain characters a bit more based on sequels or tv shows, like GoGo. In the big hero 6 tv show, she certainly has some great moments including being a mentor and singing about Dark Matter (plus we see her actually hug and broke Scott Adsit)
I think they should have included madellaine from the Hunchback of Notre Dame 2. She was very underrated the fact that she accepted and love quasimodo made her an amazing character
please don't remind me about that dumpster fire. That movie was so abysmally boring, terribly animated, and a huge insult to the first movie and I hope to God no one considers it canon.
I will fight to death about how underrated Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather are from Sleeping Beauty! I adore the live-action Maleficent adaption for varied reasons reasons, but ultimately, I cannot forgive what that writing team did to the fairies. They were the animated Golden Girls before that sit-com was even on paper! I think they are truly underrated icons & deserve more attention lol. Aurora may be the title character of Sleeping Beauty, but she's not the lead character. Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather are the true main characters of Sleeping Beauty (1959). And the writing team did go on record admitting as much. I'm paraphrasing, but they basically said that they had so much fun developing the sister trio as indvidual personalities and exploring the impact their magic can have on the plot, that they ended up moving into the spotlight. So it's the 3 fairy sisters vs Maleficent, as the hero vs villain dynamic driving this original plot. And Aurora is who the heroes are fighting for; she's their motivation to fight. Aurora's role is basically what Princess Zelda's historically is to The Legend of Zelda franchise; and the 3 fairies are Link. They're the ones with a history with the Maleficent in the fae-realm of society. Aurora, her family, and Phillip & his dad just got caught up in fae drama cuz they weren't sufficiently educated on the details to avoid it. Aurora's curse vis Maleficent is the trio's "Call to Action". It was out of their guilt on behalf of the actions of a particularly vengeful one of their own, that they offered to hide and raise Aurora, lovingly and safely, for 16 years. And it was THEIR eventual love for Aurora, & their desire for her safety and happiness, that was the driving driving force behind their motivations and actions throughout the film....as the actual heroes of the story. Phillip's love & athleticism was also essential, as the story is written. But he was also actually pretty much hand-held by the fairies through the whole final escape & confrontation with Maleficent. The women who raised Aurora were NOT going to let failure to save her be an option. So, Maleficent didn't REALLY introduce the idea of a fairy tale's "true love" angle being that of a parent's love for their child, the adaption just switched the parental figure and had it replace the (yes, very un-developed, in both cases) romantic love's role in breaking the curse. But devoted parents, as protagonists, who take action to save their child were ALREADY deeply a part of the 1959 film's story...and that's part of why I have such mixed feelings about the commentary around Maleficent being a 'new' feminist take on the tale. I appreciate that it elevates impact of true familial love & emphasizes how it can heal a broken and abused soul; the actions they take out of love can even 'undo' those they have done out of spite (within reason). Love saves AND heals and redeems. That was a beautiful choice. But I hate that the adaption did that story edit at the cost of making the original parental figures, the fairies, flake-y & irresponsible ditzes. They are depicted with a well-meaning but pitifully unreliable & distanced emotional relationship with Aurora in Maleficent. Three highly capable (yet reasonably flawed), entertaining, relatable, deeply compassionate, older, fat, unmarried****, co-parenting sisters being thrown under the bus to become useless dolts..... in the name of feminist story-telling??? That was....a glaring oversight in interpreting the original film for an updated adaption, in my opinion. ***(i know they're fae-folk. Historically-speaking, fae are secular beings and thus, removed from Christian marriage ideals. But the 1950's American writing team probs didn't think that deeply about that lore, tho. And living a whole life as an unmarried "old-maid" was particularly stigmatized in the '50s.) Anyway...Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather are my true underrated favs who deserve better, thank you! lol.

Which one?
@@HaydrogenBomb24 she was the one who was in the middle usually
That's cute
I'm glad Princess Eilonwy is on the list
YES!!! ME TOO!!! I freaking love her!
Miss Bianca is the definition of class and bravery
I wanted to be just like her when I was growing up.
Nani was so pure and dealt with so much at such a young age... taking on watching her sister aliens and jobs...🥺❤️
Olivia from the great mouse detective.
SHE IS SOOOOOO CUTE AND ADORABLE!!!!!!!! 😆♥️😆♥️😆♥️
God, yes! 🤩
Megara, Grandma Far, Yezma and Esmeralda are my favourite characters hands down I just adore them
Yzma is my favorite Disney villain. She is such an underrated villain. Plus she was voiced by the late great Eartha Kitt.
Honey Lemon is actually my second favorite Big Hero 6 character behind Hiro
Meg is the best female character but is often forgotten because Hercules is an underrated movie
Fun fact: "The Lion King 2" is loosely based on "Romeo and Juliet"!
everyone knew that like the first was one loosely based on Hamlet
@@ahmedmaklad6527 It's weird to think of Zira as an evil version of Lady Montague, isn't it?
We cannot talk about the brilliance of Yzma without mentioning the absolute legend that was Eartha Kitt! May she rest in peace ❤️
Robin Hood: We have six children.
Maid Marian: A dozen at least.
Me: Someone want a very active seks life.
🤣😭
I mean, foxes can have pretty big litters.
You do know foxes give birth to litters
Jim's mother also deserves more love and I completely agree Treasure Planet is under appropriated, I remember how much I loved it. Esmeralda was a Disney princess until 2005 or 2006.
20- Might be a mouse but she’s full of hope
19 -She’s a leader and feminine as a tough cat but who doesn’t love Emma Thompson?
Watching the vid and checking you list of comments.
@@sointroverted Thanks
The fact Is Lloyd Alexander is a very underrated writer and his works deserve a much larger audiience and fame.
All the female characters are pretty, cute and cool in the movies of Disney
What about Mittens? She was the one who helped Bolt discover the real world. Her relationship with Bolt was one of the strongest parts of the movie.
My 3 favorites are Kida, Meg and Jane, but all on this list deserves more attension and praise.
I love Esmeralda and Kiara!! Lion King 2 is so underrated!!
I remember when I was small I liked Hunchback of Notre Dame and still do and the reason was Esmeralda. I loved her character idk if it was how they made her character or because my name is Esmeralda or both.
Ever adult watching Inside Out any time sadness said anything: “same”
Distinct lack of Madam Mim, who is serverly underrated.
Neera (Dinosaur)
Ramsey (The Good Dinosaur)
Audrey (Atlantis)
I love this list! I think Wendy from Peter Pan could be a contender, as well as Moana's grandmother. It was nice to see so many characters that are TRULY underrated on the list.
“Cars didn’t drive on it to make great time. They drove it to have a good time.”
-Sally Carrera
Loved Megara. Similar to Esmerelda in that she has more connections to the villain than the hero at first, but unlike Esmerelda Meg's desperation to escape Hades' control actually drives her to do the wrong thing for a while before making her mind up for good. Hades is right about one thing: she IS a fabulous actress.
i would too see a new top 10 underrated female dreamworks characters
I wholeheartedly agree
Sarcastically: so smooth milo "p-preety girl, I meal I swim pretty good" and I was so rooting for kiara and kids so yeah all the Ks 😁
"This cricket's the lucky one!"
I feel like Kida should have been put a lot higher, top 4 for sure
Jessie (from Toy Story) was definitely underrated for such a great character. Yzma and Nani were also very underrated.
Jessie was underused in Toy Story 4.
Didn't Jessie get a fair bit of merch
My favorite ladies from this list are Miss Bianca, Maid Marian, Chicha, Kida, and Captain Amelia. They definitely deserved to be on this list 💜
I have always loved Yzma!!!! She is hilarious, crazy and voiced by one of the greatest women of all time, Eartha Kitt!!! 🥰
Honey lemon is more underrated than Go Go. And where is Anastasia EXSHOOS me
Anastasia isn't Disney.
@@Artleycoul She is now.
@@larkmacgregor3143 Deets!
I love Honey Lemon!
@@Artleycoul Fox originally did Anastasia, Disney bought Fox. Still, as she wasn't originally a Disney character in not upset she's not on this list.
Captain Amelia!!! I LOVE HER!!! She's so strong and sassy!
And she should've been so much higher on this list!
I love so many of these Chica, Yzma, Franny, Grandma Fa, and Jessie are my favorites
Grandmother fa reached the age of "come at me bro" all the best old people can achieve
I loved Atlantis when I was younger, that movie is so underestimated!
And living a whole life as an unmarried "old-maid" was particularly stigmatized in the '50s.)
Anyway...Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather are my true underrated favs who deserve better, thank you! lol.
Charlotte La Bouff! Best Friend ever!
Go kida and the Atlantis franchise! I feel like everyone overlooks this movie. Disney’s and other people shouldn’t overlook this movie just because it didn’t make a lot of money the fact is that I still watch this movie today and it still by far one of my favorite Disney movies
Melody from Little Mermaid 2 and Shanti from Jungle Book 2. Brave, adventurous, compassionate, rebellious, spunky, determine, know what they want and goes for it despite being kids. And what about Malina from The Emperor's New School? Or does that not count?
Here are some honorable mentions:
- Melody (The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea)
- Shanti (The Jungle Book 1 & 2)
- Jane Darling (Return to Neverland)
- Olivia Flaversham (The Great Mouse Detective)
- Helga Sinclair (Atlantis: The Lost Empire)
And Audrey. How many 16 year old girls get to go on high stakes adventures like that?
Wait so Lottie aka Charlotte from Princess and the Frog isnt on this list?😕 shes the friend that people want
I agree that all of these underrated female Disney & Pixar characters do often get overlooked more than they should’ve been. It’s surprising that some female villains like Yzma are also underrated like the protagonist characters.
