i've noticed pixar movies are going into a new age of stories that are extremely personal to the people making the films. they may get more likely to be unrelateable to most but will still tell amazing stories which some can extremely relate to. i actually like the new age of pixar with the experimentation of art style and willingness to delve into topics that some people think younger kids shouldn't talk about (LGBTQ+ in Luca and female puberty in Turning Red).
I like this new direction Pixar is choosing, it makes movies a lot more personal while keeping them entertaining for audiences. They still have important messages people can understand.
I just noticed Miriam’s whole skateboard is a tribute to toy story! It has the lightyear symbol right under it and the skull from Sid’s iconic shirt 😱😱

As a torontonian (how we call "people from Toronto"), it made me really really happy to know that FINALLY a Disney movie was made in my own city and country! Haha, I screamed basically when I kept on seeing the streetcars and the appearance of the timbits box! Also how ironic, I'm eating a box of timbits right now.

There is also weirdly for a Canadian set movie, a poster for the 1980 Olympics, known as “the miracle on ice” (there is also a movie about it) where the USA beat the Soviet Union in the gold medal game. As a hockey fan I found these very interesting references to see in a pixar movie

Night fall is also a novel in the anime "Little Witch Academia". Not sure if that was the same idea but they seem very similar.

10:38 i think the blue jay has more of a reference from the short "dug days" on disney plus, this is because in one of the episodes carl fredrickson or Mr. fredrickson made a bird feeder and a blue jay was trying to eat some of the bird seeds but scared away by a squirrel and the squirrel eats the bird seeds instead

In the intro of the movie, there is a shot where a teacher is in their office describing Mei at their desk, and on a bookshelf, you can see a white polar bear wearing a blue jersey with a maple leaf in the center, a clear reference to Carleton the bear, the mascot of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League. There is also weirdly for a Canadian set movie, a poster for the 1980 Olympics, known as “the miracle on ice” (there is also a movie about it) where the USA beat the Soviet Union in the gold medal game. As a hockey fan I found these very interesting references to see in a pixar movie

I think they mixed O town and b4.4 in the names and used the general aesthetic of boybands in the 90 (bsb, nsync, etc) but that's something that crossed my mind 😅
