For me, this was the first time I think I saw an accurate portrayal of teen girl friendship in a movie. It was cringe but so sweet and so accurately showed just how important girl friends become. Also as a Canadian who graduated in 2005 this movie was an absolute treat. I couldn't help but feel nostalgic

Same! I was glad to see them not shy away from the more awkward and cringe moments of being a tween. Watching this movie made me think back to a lot of moments from when I was her age. I actually had to pause for a second during the concert and singing scenes bc it brought back memories from my Hamilton phase. I wanna repress that as much as possible

I love how there's so much diversity in the background characters, it feels realistic. There are women wearing hijabs, people in wheelchairs, the security guard in a turban, and the so-called mean girl has a glucose monitor on her arm and an insulin pump.
Well, it IS Toronto. Diversity is the name of the game.

As a type 1 diabetic, I was SO excited to see the pump and CGM in the trailer! They were just background characters, but it was so great to see!!
And while they went way too heavy on the push to lay out what this movie was 'about', they did the diversity the right way. I saw no stories about it. No massive pushes to have it recognized. No place that was trying to lay out how people HAD to see it, because of the diversity. It simply WAS. Perfection.
That mashup of the Cantonese chant with "nobody like u" did NOT need to go that hard and that alone deserves like over 9000 likes.

Fun tiny thing fans ever noticed about Priya handing Mei the deodorant: she literally pulls it out of thin air. Not out of a purse or bag; she pulls it out of freaking nowhere.
And it is NEVER acknowledged.
Being that Priya's arms were folded, her hand was under her other arm/in her armpit, where she apparently just happened to have it already had in hand.

One question I had about this movie: mei’s mom knew that her daughter would get panda’d someday, and hears loud crashing sounds and her daughter yelling “I’M A BUG RED MONSTER” yet doesn’t immediately think “oh yeah, the family curse of turning into big, red monsters might have come into effect”

Mom fought so hard to make sure the panda didn't happen, and still thought Mei was a little girl, that it didn't even cross her mind that it was a possibility.

I love this line, because you can’t tell whether Ming is proud or ashamed of this.
Proud, because she honored her family above all else, or ashamed, because she never had the teen experience and her mother made honoring her family feel like a prison.
It’s probably a mix of both. She’s proud that she honored her family but there’s just an undercurrent of resentment and sadness to her words. Like she resents the fact that she couldn’t be “normal”
Another really nice thing that I notice more and more when I see this movie is about Tyler. Yes, he's a jerk, and he's obnoxious, and kind of a bully throughout the movie... but also, he's never really hanging out with friends of his own, he already knew that no one would want to come to his birthday party without Mei, he's wandering around his party by himself once Mei can't be found, and he constantly looks anxious and self-conscious when he's not Class Clowning it up. Maybe by his actions, he didn't deserve winding up as their friend so quickly, but he definitely needed it!
He also reads to me - a gay man, mind - as a guy who's in denial about being gay. There were a lot of nuances to his character that'd be cool to be expanded on.
There's a Turning Red music video called "One True Love" it shows another side of Tyler. It's so sad. I makes you feel so sorry for him. He should have been friends with the group a long time ago.
He's my favorite character, I love that kid. I'm not fully on board with idea of him being queer coded just because he likes a boy band but there's so much more depth to him than people realize
While the focus is on Mei... everyone in her age group is starting to go through the same things she is (excluding Red panda) right now too. Tyler is just as confused and trying to figure things out as Mei. He wants to be cool, but feels he isn't and is having to deal with being torn in half by liking things he's afraid others will see as making him uncool. Him at a party full of people, but still alone was actually kind hard to watch and really humanizes him. You get a glimpse at where his bullying comes from. It's when he's able to finally be himself around at least a few other people that that emotional turmoil settles. There's absolutely nothing to suggest how he identifies and frankly it is irrelevant to the point his character is here to make. Everyone should be able to like what they like without feeling judged or being pigeonholed into a "type." That's just another form of passed on trauma from society instead of parents. Though it's likely he deals with it from his parents as well.
good point. the stereotypical bully in film usually has back up - a possy, a group of fellow bullies, maybe a girl on their arm. Tyler is just alone.
The scene with Jin and Mei talking about how he made her mom panda was really powerful.

The scene where Mei physically screams quietly to herself about wanting to simply stop feeling. Fits home despite me not being a tween girl.
You don't really have to be the exact same as the protagonist to relate. Stories are made to be interpreted the way the viewer chooses!

I love how they did the Mom as a red panda, the way her fur formed waves looked exactly like how chinese paintings portray manes of hair and fur in those many tiny waves, and how her beauty spot was also part of the pattern. But what SOLD it to me was her posing with her hands on her hips xD
It was so far THE BEST hands down THE BEST representation of a real teenage girl. Obsession with boy bands, feeling too much and sometimes having feelings that are still too young to explore, yet you just can't control it even if you don't understand it fully, the thought of not being able to see your favorite band live is worse than death, everything is so true, everything is so accurate. Hollywood changed how we see teenage girls so hard, always actresses way older than the supposed age, we started to forget how it really looks like.

I absolutely love Turning Red.
Mei's struggles with the panda actually reminded me a lot of my struggles growing up with ADHD. Let me tell you, with ADHD it can really feel like there's a giant red panda that gets to decide what you can and cannot focus on at any given time. Plus ADHD causes emotional dysregulation, similar to the panda's connection to Mei's strong emotions.
The scene where she's beating herself up and begging the panda to go away hit me really hard. That was basically the exact same reaction I had when, at about that same age, my ADHD symptoms got worse and I finally understood how it was going to affect my life. "Why am I like this? I wish this would just go away!"
The "cure" even has parallels to ADHD medications. Some people can manage their ADHD without meds and some people have to have them to function. Back when I was diagnosed the meds available had some pretty nasty side effects and my symptoms weren't too severe, so I ended up not taking them. So the ritual scene, with her struggling over the choice and the visualization of ripping an "inconvenient" part of yourself away to conform, hit me pretty hard too. Top all that off with the "I'm not going to regret this... Am I?" and just... Yeah.
Ultimately, watching this movie prompted me to reprocess a lot of old negative emotions and baggage from a healthier perspective as an adult. It relieved a lot of weight that I hadn't even been aware I was carrying around.
As someone with ADHD too, I agree with everything here.
I'm surprised you didn't mention that the scene where her mom was spying on her at school was directly lifted from Domee Shi's actual childhood. Her mom did the exact same thing.
Yeah, a lot of people who think Mei's mom was too over the top and unrealistic need to hear about asian parents

I really love how close Mei and her friends were. They stand by her after learning her secret, and even allow Tyler to join them afterwards. Best friend group ever!
I wish I’d had friends like them growing up, but I was the bullied loner 🥺💔still hard to mention 13 years later (I finished school at 18, I’m 31 now).
I agree Trina Q because here is the thing, you know what I would do if I was in that movie? If I saw Tyler at the concert I would say, " You know Tyler I was going to call you an embarrassment and literally take a photo of you and show that to everybody at school. But after what happened at the party since we attack you it has been emotional for all of us. Especially right now, so what do you say truce?"

as i was discovering what it really meant to be gay, i was SO confused. like “is this allowed??” “what if this is fake??” and i remember feeling things toward my first real crush i never felt before. seeing Mei react in a similar (yet very exaggerated way) made me feel so seen. even if it’s very different.
This movie opened my eyes to the amount of people that were not raised as I was, especially with people calling the store scene unrealistic. I've had a couple of traumatising events with my mum like that and while I blamed myself every time, it DID Shatter my trust in her. This is my new favourite pixar movie and I love how Mei's relationship with her mother is depicted, down to the helicopter parenting and contradictory feeling of guilt, anger and a want to impress her
Speaking of underrated animated movies, Everything Great About The Prince of Egypt would be amazing.

I'm genuinely happy to see a positive video from a fairly big channel about Turning Red. It hit very close to home for me, and I'm tired of people complaining about it for weird reasons. My experience growing up has been diferent from Mei's, obviously, but I can still relate to a lot of the situations and feelings. Even that scene where Mei is going to sleep in her empty room, overhearing Ming talk about the panda in a worried way, impacted me greatly. I've overheard a fair share of things from my mom and dad, and while they don't always mean it the way it sounds, it stings. Especially as someone with a mental disorder that needs special care every now and then. It's tough on my family, emotionally. They get tired, and it sucks for everyone. So yeah, Turning Red is one of my favorite Pixar movies.

I think it's so interesting how ming treats mei after growing up. we learn that young ming feels like she can never do anything right, so a lot of the time she assumes mei can do no wrong and puts the blame of her mistakes on other people (dylan, mei's friends). it's an extreme over correction but i feel it's realistic that she would remember how her mom made her feel growing up and decided that mei would never feel like that, but ultimately caused similar problems because assuming that mei can never do anything wrong puts a lot of pressure on mei to actually live up to those expectations. it's really interesting and i'm so happy that a movie like this exists
I agree that censoring things doesn't help teens in the long run. I knew about periods, sex, and puberty as a kid because my mom wanted me to be able to talk to her openly when we had questions. She made sure I understood stuff and had agency from a young age. Many people are shocked to hear that my mom answered my questions plainly when I started asking them.
I loved all the characters in this film. I rewatched it recently.
If you as any Asian (East Asian, South Asian, Asian from Neptune) we will tell you that we have had an experience where our parent went all out on us when we had a crush like Mei.
And the whole thing about being a “good daughter” hit hard in that Ming was not aware at the time that she was perpetuating generational trauma unto Mei. She, even at her age, was still processing that being a “good daughter” also meant that you can have individuality. In cultures like Asian cultures, where community is deemed to trump individuality, I can see where she is coming from. I cried when Mei met her mum was a daughter and carried her out of that “forest” of pain that she still seemed to be in.
I wish there was just a teeny bit more between Ming and the grandma, but when grandma said, “I’m not losing my daughter again” in the film, I was already a sobbing mess.
Such a golden film. And yeh, I think it’s an appropriate family film. Kids hear period all the time. They’ll be fine.
Being a young girl who had her period at 10, and then watching this movie however many years later. The amount of appreciation I had for not only the representation, but the way her mother treated it. Especially the tea scene, my mother did all she could to help me through a terrible time. There’s so much wins in this movie, it really made me feel valid.
The line “the farther you’ll go, the prouder I’ll be” NEVER fails to hit me in the feels
9:18 This immediately made me think of one of the greatest moments of A Goofy Movie. when Max says he has his own life now, Goofy responds he knows that, he just wants to be a part of it.

I know Turning Red has a pretty similar message to Encanto, (which I like both movies) but the funny part is how their climaxes play out.
Mirabel and Abuela's fight was a relatively normal argument. (Sure, their house fell apart, but the argument itself was normal)
Mei and Ming's fight is a literal *Godzilla battle* in the middle of the city, Mei pretty much has to go Super Sonic to stop her.
I don't know why, but that tonal shift is hilarious to me. Love em both.

The Y2K vibes are on point in this movie, same with the teenage energy all throughout the movies. Probably why this became my new favorite Pixar movie next to Wall-E
It's worth noting that Miriam seems hurt when Mei bluntly tells Miriam that Ming doesn't like her, while not seeming to have a problem with Priya or Abby. It might be because they're both of Asian ethnicity, while Miriam is white. Luckily, Ming comes around later on.
I'd say it's more about culture. White westerners (some caucasians and slavs think so, too) are often perceived as the type of parents who are too soft with their kids, which is why a westerner's child is perceived as a troublemaker, whereas a caucasian, slavic, asian, etc kid would NOT be viewed that way bc of similar parenting methods
@@Crawlingdreams418 So exactly as he said, the issue is racially profiling someone and their family. "White westerners" would be most white people. If you're white and you grew up in Vietnam, you're very much the exception. Call it cultural if you want, if you're assuming how someone is raised due to their skin colour and then disliking them based on that assumption, you're racist.
@@plebisMaximus i do agree it's bigoted and that it's not justifiable, but some (if not a lot of them) white non-westerners perceive white westerners the same way mei's mom does. so there is a cultural element to some extent. doesn't justify the ostracism, but explains why it happens

@@Crawlingdreams418 There’s also the idea that it’s such a culturally pervasive phenomenon that it can end up being internalized and acted on almost subconsciously. I don’t think Ming would explicitly say “Because she’s white and those white parents aren’t hard enough on her” but that’s what she’s been conditioned to think all her life. Even if she doesn’t believe that’s the reason, it can still be there at the back of her mind nagging at her and making her quicker to judge.
Just noticed during your commentary/review that the grandma may have reinforced the “parting with the red panda is the best solution” since she and her four girls saw it that way whereas she was the first to hug Ming and support Mei Mei for her decision “May Sun Yi guide you and keep you safe” (This is your choice, and while I/we may not agree, you have someone to keep an eye on you.) kind of feeling. First to recognize where Mei Mei ‘s heart lies and support in the end.
I feel like mentioning: Mei's self-berating was probably the closest I empathised with a fictional character.
Also loved how Mei’s aunties, grandma, and mom all wear dominant green in their outfits, which is the opposite of red in the color wheel, showing their denouncement of their respective Pandas.

That was unfair calling Stacy (the blonde girl) and her friends "the mean girls". Sure, they're a different clique, but they were never shown to have beef with Mei's group, and are literally the first people to embrace what Mei is, without question.
How cool would it have been if, since the movie takes place in 2002, Disney brought back their old CGI castle logo that they used between Toy Story and Ratatouille? And instead of a white flash, it's pink smoke, turning the castle and background into different shades of red? That was a huge missed opportunity especially since movie studios reuse their old logos all the time when a movie is set during that period of time.

8:29 Love how Prya is in such a hardcore "Twilight"-phase that she always tries to be a vampire. Like here, where she moves her hands like they have claws or later, when they are laying on the roof and she lies like a vampire in a coffin.
There needs to be a spin-off movie about Abby. Her character has too much potential for a side character.
The twist!? When she's not around her friends she is completely deadpan and calm.

Abby is a massive mood in this story.
As someone coming partially from a Immigrant Family I also felt the pressure to be socialized by the culture of the country you grow up in but also being influenced by the culture and values of your family. The pressure to make sure to do everything right because you know what sacrifices were made to bring you where you are. I could really hard relate to that
My mom answered my early childhood question of “where do babies come from?” It was very watered down since I was like 5, but every year she added new age appropriate information. So when my period started at 13, I wasn’t confused it scared. I knew exactly what to expect and do. I plan on doing the same with my child(ren) as it made talking about anything related to my body and sexual health not awkward or weird, which made it feel safe to talk to her about birth control and such.
I'm so pleased you've finally covered this amazing movie. Whip smart script, endlessly quotable lines, tons of memorable scenes, laugh out loud funny and truly heartbreaking. Did you catch the look in Ming's eyes as she looked at her daughter after Miriam said: "Mei - tell her!" It was a look of desperation and hope that she was right and so pleased that her Daughter backed her up. I think the scene where they ride back home in the car, no dialogue, then Ming reaches over and puts her hand on Mei's is tragic and utterly heartbreaking. This movie is so ridiculously good, it's untrue. One of Pixar's best ever and an instant classic.
My favorite subtleties in this movie:
When Miriam, Abby and Priya sing "Nobody like you", it lines up with how they feel about her. It's not just a song, but a convo. And the same happens later at the concert, when 4Town sings - it feels like they are talking to both mei and ming and the rest of the pandas. This goes for everyone else in the audience when they join too and again, for Mei's friends.
And Mei singing along herself feels like she makes it clear to her mom, that she has friends and such, but she'll always have her mom. And reverse.
Other things include the color dynamics, the subtle racism when Ming excludes Miriam because she's the only non-Asian friend in the group. And some more.

I love how Turning Red touches on mature themes but doesn't portray them in a condescending way. It tackles these issues without belittling the emotional capacity of their target audience, instead acknowledging that teenagers are able to understand and learn from the characters' journey. It's really refreshing to see adolescence from the point of view of the parent and the child, I love this film so much ❤️❤️❤️
I really hope this inspires more films about the 2000s. I grew up during that time and I am really tired of 80s nostalgia being shoved down my throat when I wasn't even alive back then. Just let us feel nostalgia for our own childhoods already!
There was a lot of 80s nostalgia because it had been 20+ years since the 80s and then half of 90s culture was either 80s redux or proto-millenial. The 80s had a similar trend where a lot of films took place during the 60s. Since we're now 20+ years from 2000 we're going to be seeing more and more films catering to late 90s and 2000s nostalgia instead. Our generation is finally in charge of the film making.

don't worry, you'll get those films... when your generation is the one making them. It's just the cycle of our media. In the 70s, my mom said everything was about getting back to the 50s. When I was a kid in the 80s, the nostalgia in our media was for the 60s. That's when our parents grew up and the time they remembered the most fondly. The 70s made a comeback in the 90s and my entire class was obsessed with the fashion and music of that time. The 80s are all the rage now as millenials and younger gen-xers long for the simplicity of their youth. Your time will come grasshopper. Sooner than you think.
Even rewatching the final scene at the end with Mei keeping her panda self has me bawling. That's the scene that got me when I first watched it, my mother wasn't the best but I know that some of the ways she raised me were due to the same things pushed onto her. There's so much that she did that still hurts me to this day and I wish that she could understand and say sorry and the film just, it just hit me in the emotions. This is a film that I wish I had growing up, but I'm happy that it exists today. The messages are amazing, the cringey parts are relatable, the open talk about periods is a good step in the right direction for media meant towards children.
The only thing missing from this video is all the 2000s Toronto things. As a 2000s kid who grew up in toronto this was an extra special movie. So often Toronto is used as new york and other american cities, even tho it was animated, it was so good to have a moive actually set here, and set in the Toronto of my childhood (I will always call it the Sky Dome!)!!!
same, I grew up east of Hamilton in the 90s, but used to go into the city for various things a lot, the ROM, Jays games, Science Centre, etc. I was happy when I saw Ming and Mei in a pic with the CN Tower thinking they'd gone to Toronto on vacation, then got excited when I realised they actually lived in Toronto. I still call it the Sky Dome, as well.
It wasn't the emotional scenes that made me cry, but the scenes that didn't hold back on the realism of wanting and feeling old enough but always being seen as a child. great movie all around
This movie is the epitome of "Great despite not being the target audience". Not only was I born in 2002, but I am neither asian, a girl or a red panda, nor was I into boybands or excelled at school. But everything still felt so real to me, the cringiness, the fears, the embarassment and the fights with the parents. It may have been a bad time, but this movie really reminded me of the good stuff that came from my pre-teen years that shaped me into who I am today.
And the mother daughter stuff hit hard. Particullarly for my mom who even cried at the scene with young Ming as she herself has complicated relationship with both my sister and her own mother.

I look at all the so called "cringy" things I'm open about loving today and remember how back in middle-high school I hid a lot of my obsessions out of fear of embarrassment or being seen as not a real man. I really am happy that a lot of Millennials and zoomers nowadays can be more open about their interests with a lesser fear of ridicule then back then.
Instead they're ridiculed for being men.
You absolutely can prepare for puberty by not waiting until the last minute to talk about it. I prepared my kids on exactly what to expect and made sure they could talk to me about everything not matter what.
My favourite animated movie of the year. Aside from Lightyear, Pixar’s been on a winning streak lately.
I would argue since 1995! They have 26 movies, and have maybe 2 or 3week ones!? For me personally, Cars 2 is the only really bad movie in their catalogue, and Light-year and the Good Dinosaur didn't really resonate with me. They really are the royalty of filmmaking, not even just animation.
The one concern for them is that other animation studios are catching up on the tech and stylization side. More competition seems to be breeding more innovation, though.
When I was watching this, and the whole pictures scene came up and the mom slamming them down on the counter. I was waiting for Mei to wake up from a horrible nightmare cause that is beyond horrifying to me. How any parent could do that to a child is heartbreaking
God I tear up everytime i see the mother apologising. Its just so human and it sets one's own childhood experiences in new light.
I think imma watch the movie again and have another healthy man-cry.

Yesss finally a CinemaWins video about Turning Red! I adore this move; the artstyle, relatability, story was all on point! Personally, they really nailed the balance with Mei's home life and social life. Also anyone who says this movie isn't relatable to anyone outside of Asian heritage... no? My family and I are first generation immigrants from Russia and the Toronto scene mixed with Mei's mom's actions made me clench my fists so hard because I felt spoken to WAYYY too loudly at times. I have friends from the Caribbean and Venezuela who both wanted to sink into their seats during Mei telling her mom she doesn't want her presence. Just... what a good movie, what an inspired choice for the themes and underlying conflict!
Gosh, i still can't watch even clips of this movie without starting to tear up. My mom and I had a similar relationship but it really never was reconcillied until I got much older. Going through puberty I was just...really confused. Nothing felt right, growing felt wrong, I couldn't look at myself in the mirror it all just felt off. My mom, at the time, just wrote it off as growing pains and things were exchanged between both of us that were down right hurtful. I didn't have the words to explain what I was feeling, all I could was just...well feel them. For years it was like that, not knowing what was wrong and it lasted for far longer than it should.
Turns out, for me at least, it was me not excepting a part of who I was. Being transgender. Pushing what I knew and felt was right as a teen to try and be someone my mom wanted me to be, being afraid of losing her, not knowing how best to put into words what I knew I was feeling....so much of it just festered in me...sort of like locking away a part of yourself for someones sake. It took me until I was 29 to finally just set that part of me free...to actually talk to her and tell her that this was who I was, every part of it. I can never get back those years I missed going through the wrong puberty, of the pain and hurt, but I get another chance to do it right this time with my mom.
This movie...it broke me. It broke because I see parts of myself in Mei and her interactions with her mom. Feeling like you have to rip a part of yourself away in order to be what your parents think you should be. It has been ages since a movie made me feel something just so...powerful and personally connected to myself. (don't even get me started on the scene of Mei hurting herself to make herself try to be what is considered 'normal') So yeah, happy to see this movie getting more love and see it on your channel.
Also, as always,still asking for a Spirited Away Cinema Win or a Howls Moving Castle. Hell, I'll take Kiki's Delivery Service as well.
this made me realise that my mam doesnt actually listen to anything i say and she's also never said sorry to me for anything serious. shes only ever jokingly apologised for things like accidentally walking into me, opening a draw into me by accident etc. but she has never apologised to me for anything else.
There's no way the EEAAO video isn't like a 16 hour long epic that goes frame by frame
it has to be, at least, a two-parter. There's no way he can do it in less than two videos.

One thing I like to point out about the red panda analogy is that I'm pretty sure it's about more than just the onset of puberty/menstruation. It's about the parts of ourselves that are messy (that usually manifest around puberty), and the choices we make to either embrace them or suppress them. Especially as ladies (though of course growing up and going through puberty happens to most of us).
Mei Mei learns to love her big, loud, horny, smelly(?) panda self. Her aunts choose to let theirs out every once in a while (iirc we see them panda out again in like the credits or something). But her mom shuts her panda away forever.
For Ming, the messy part of herself is angry, spiteful, and violent. It's a part that she's only able to associate with trauma and the harm it caused/causes. Maybe with some really good therapy she could learn to embrace that side, but in the meantime it's not something she's comfortable sharing with anyone. She made that choice and lives her life as best she can with that decision, for better or worse. Just like her daughter will live with *her* choice the best way she can.
This movie is SO GOOD!!

I just wanna rant a little about how much I love how the second act break up was done. When Mei is given the choice between choosing siding with her mom or her friends, it makes sense why she’d choose her mom in that moment, we were given a perfect build up to the stakes and what’s valuable to Mei.
They literally elaborate just a few minutes earlier that in that moment, there are two things that matter the most to Mei, it’s the concert with her friends, and her mothers approval. The moment she attacked Tyler she lost the money they needed for all of them to go to the concert together. The concert is already lost in her eyes, one of two of her most important values. And now she’s put in a position where she can lose her mom, or not lose her mom. And she can’t handle that, not after this emotional breakdown. It’s perfectly understandable, and I love how believable it is why she’d choose her mom over her friends in that moment.
I was absolutely waiting for you to do Everything Everywhere all at Once and I also IMMIDIATELY knew that it’s gonna be the next video after you said that it’s gonna be about generational trauma. Especially after Turning Red.
I have two daughters. I was TOTALLY prepared for the moment the "red lotus blooms." I prepared them for it, had all the supplies ready to go. Let them know it was completely natural and was nothing to be embarrassed about. They were completely unprepared when it finally happened, and so completely embarrassed that I didn't even know it was happening for weeks afterward. It may even have been months before I found out. My younger got in trouble at school for spending too much time in the bathroom. Turns out she didn't tell her teacher, either. Teacher thought her class was too young for puberty. Understandable, it was only the 3rd grade! My daughter proved her wrong, and ever since that school has supplied a waste basket for used pads in the ladies rooms.
It is a REALLY hard time for a young woman and nothing a parent can say, especially a MALE parent, really helps. My oldest grandchild is eight. I wonder if she's going to go through it soon? Maybe she's already started? No way they're going to tell me.

The art style (big chunky teeth, etc) is a bit of an adjustment, but once you get used to it, this is really solid! They should have put this in theaters, rather than Lightyear.
16:44 there is a reason this movie is in my catharsis list on letterboxd and its bc of this line. i dont think ill ever get this sort of sentiment from my parents and so hearing this (from the pov of an asian american woman too!) made me burst into tears. still does even now!! lol

AHH! I’m so excited for Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. I actually just recently watched it for the first time and it blew me away. The entire movie felt like a drug trip in the best. Way. Possible. Can’t wait.
I liked Turning Red quite a bit, but I cannot contain my excitement regarding EEAAO!! Easily one of my favorite movies of all time!

I didn’t care for this film, BUT I did like that it covered that’s weird paradoxical feeling you can have at this age where you hate your parents but then also kinda hate yourself for hating them. Sometimes wondered if that was just me growing up.

what I love in the mirror first time is that while it's reflecting her, it REALLY REALLY feels like the panda itself is sad to be leaving like it wantrs to stay.
I'm soooooooo jealous of Mei's friends!! They're the best friends she could have! Really now, how many of you had friends like this in middle school? I wanna know! Because mine were total opposites!!
What's amazing about this movie is how perfectly it encapsulates being a teenage girl. It even manages to be relatable for people like me, who for various reasons weren't your "typical" teenage girl. I was into vocaloid instead of boy bands, and i didn't have true crushes because i'm aro/ace and didn't realize it yet. The fact that the film is still able to be relatable to someone who wasn't a very typical teenage girl says a lot.
The red panda is the biggest metaphor for periods ever. Mood swings, it coming out when you’re upset, feeling like a monster, constantly hungry, the crying. Just a big yes
I really loved how prepared Mei's mom was for her period and how supportive she ended up being. I've heard some awful stories where the parents basically don't teach their child at all and just let them figure it out on their own, so a movie, an animated one at that, just being so upfront and casual about it is awesome. (Well except for the scene in the classroom)

Ah yes, one of my most favorite movies in the world. This movie made me really love my middle school self. I was 19 when it came out and it really clicked with me. Ever since I watched it I've been louder and more excited about my interests like I was back then and worried less about being cringe, and have become a slightly more confident person because of it. Happy to see one of my favorite channels covering it.

Glad to have you back dude, definitely loved this video and looking forward to next week, especially since I actually got that film on Blu-ray for Christmas, but I do have to point out that you actually missed a few wins, mainly the way the aunties arrived definitely deserved a "Now that's an entrance" win, the shot of Mei finally getting the hang of her red panda transformation while going to the concert is a direct homage to The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and a few giggle worthy wins like Mei's response to her dad saying "I told you she was big!" "THAT BIG?!", or her grandma being annoyed that her new charm is from the 4*Town gift shop "SO UNLUCKY!"

I saw this with my (very Catholic) mom and she ended up liking it a lot, even admitting her past mistakes. Lots of tears, in the end.

Turning Red is my FAVORITE Pixar movie of ALL TIME!!!! Absolutely love the characters and the red pandas!
The thing I love about this movie the most is that it came out while I was in Toronto and had met and become friends with so many Chinese people so there were so many jokes that I got from this that they don't outright explain.
Ex: "Oh I hate the number 4" (Grandma talking about 4 town) the reason is because 4 in Chinese sounds similar to the word death so it is considered an unlucky number.
So when I heard the grandma say that I exhaled so loudly. And was so glad again that they didn't explain the joke for everyone
I used to live in Toronto when I was 11, but we had to move back to the US for financial reasons.
It was really heartbreaking and kind of traumatic for my whole family. Living in Canada had been a dream for a while and it deeply affected all of us when we had to move back to my hometown.
So…simple stuff like street cars, the CN Tower, and even the school SORT OF looking like Parkdale…
It got me.
