This film was immensely relatable for both parents and children. I love how it not only showed Mei's perspective in growing up, and trying to get out from under her overprotective mother's thumb, but Ming's worry over her daughter's crush, and trying for her not to go through the same traumas she had.
A small moment, but Miriam seems hurt when Mei tells her that Ming doesn't like her. Some parents don't always like their child's friends, but it never occurred to her that Ming could actively dislike her, judging from the shocked look on her face.
At the end you notice Miriam is the one super happy about being invited for dinner? That part gave me hope that Ming is giving Miriam a chance. 🤞🏽 She saw how close Mei and her friends are.
I was one of those that I always worried if my friends’ parents liked me…unfortunately I found out that one of my best friends’ parents (especially his dad) really didn’t like me…but that didn’t change my friend’s opinion about me which I appreciated a lot.
Meiling’s friends were awesome I feel that the way their presence helped Mei keep the panda under control is a good metaphor for having the people and things you love around you help deal with anxiety and stress
As someone who grew up as a preteen in the 2000s, this movie is 100% accurate on its portrayal of preteen girls. Boys had playboy, girls had fanfiction.
Honestly I felt something during the scene where the Mom shows Devon the pictures and everyone laughs at Mei as she and her Mom leave the store. The pure embarrassment made my heart clench.
Honestly I also felt sorry for the clerk Devon who clearly did nothing wrong to her. It was actually a relief to see that he's still working there even after an overprotective mother jumped to the wrong conclusion
Turning Red is my favorite Pixar movie out’ve the newer releases .. I love the message of accepting new changes, being who you are and ultimately being you. It’s so relatable from being embarrassed, to having crushes, to being obsessed with some things ( I’m a directioner and ARMY ) so I definitely get the band obsession part. I also love the diversity, so many different races, ethnicities, and body types .. this movie really makes it hard for anyone to feel left out. That’s truly why I love this movie as much as I do, it’s also pretty funny, heartfelt and adorable. Plus the animation is great .. this is definitely a 9.5/10 Pixar movie for me.
My daughter went to middle school/high school in the early 2000's, and it was during this time that she caught type 1 diabetes. For us it was very relatable and gratifying to see a film that shows a girl wearing an omnipod on her arm. It's a small detail but for type 1 diabetics, it means the world.
I relate so much to the being embarrassed by parents thing, i mean there's probably not a single person in the world who hasn't been completely embarrassed by one of their parents at least once or twice in their lives.
At 13, I was obsessed with a boy band, went to my first concert, got my first period, and was a nerd scared of failure. This movie captured me perfectly 😭
Dude, I swear we're twins. I was also obsessed with the Jonas Brothers and had my first period at 13. In addition, I was a straight-laced honor student who'd have nightmares about getting in trouble at school. 😂
Being from Toronto where this is set and a huge Backstreet Boys fan and obviously growing up in the 90s this movie was amazingly relatable to me. Loved the depiction of her friendships too
The second that scene with Younger Ming began, I already felt like something struck me deeply. It hurt, and felt so personal. It felt real because it was relatable. It's that pressure and suffocating feeling of desperately wanting approval and recognition to the point you keep pushing yourself to be what you know they want you to be. And yet, still feeling like you're never gonna be enough.
I laughed out LOUD watching this movie because it was sooo relatable!! "Don't wear sunblock and do drugs all day!" Bahahaahah that is the most Asian line I have ever heard.
Turning Red is a non-traditional Pixar film for better or for worse, and what manifests is a transparent story that transcends serious prevalent topics amongst the youth like teenage rebellion, maturation, adolescence, puberty, and generational heritage, and compiles it all into arguably the most dense expression to come from Pixar. It deserves 9.5/10.
I remember one time in early Highschool, my (overprotective) mother went through my phone and mistook a roleplay session with a friend as a legit fight and reported to our principle out of concern.
@@lylysah You think thats bad, try explaining it to a uptight principle that didnt even want to tell you the reason for why you were called down. and tried to get it out of you, when you dont even know the reason for why you were called down.
I think Pixar realized that everyone needs therapy but nobody was going to therapy, so they're like, "Okay, everyone's gonna process some shit via cinema."
Seeing Mei reminded me soooo much of myself at 13. Although I didn’t turn into a giant red panda (although how cool would that be if I did?), this movie takes me back to some of the happiest moments of my life, especially with the boy bands. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
This film is the most appropriate and relatable I've ever seen. Yes there was dirty jokes but their parents are at fault saying “stripper music” and other stuff Mei's mom said + a lot of poc probably relate to this tho it's not always like a happy ending like her's.
This movie's animation is beyond great! I loved every single expression on their faces, and the pandas? Too cute for words, even the big scary one the mom turns into.
Also it's not as popular people text now more than anything and used iPads or tablets for their drawings now technology wasn't as popular or advanced is what I think mojo meant by that I'm sure SOME still pass note's and of course they still use paper and pencil to draw and stuff its just not as popular
You serious that some people think this is too adult for a child's movie? OMG... C'mon, you've been through it, or you know someone who did. PERIODS and PUBERTY are natural.
I know! Some people need to get over themselves. The awkwardness of adolescence is too mature for Pixar audiences? Some Disney movies out there are way too inappropriate for kids if you think about it.
As a kid born is the 90s. I can safely say I can relate to most of what Mei went through. To the Tamagotchi crazy to drawing steamy scenes due to raging hormones and an over active imagination and singing backstreet boys or sync with friends to...even my relationship with my mother. I love this movie so much!
My first high school crush was a boy in my 1st period freshman year. He was tall, skinny, spiky dark hair, braces, and a few zits. Despite all that I swooned hard over him for 2 years, and when he got his braces off and came to school, oh my god I had that same feeling mei did in the hallway when she saw the emo boy. I could feel myself blushing. In high school as a teen you crushed on people you look back now and think, ‘what was I thinking?’
This movie is absolutely beautiful!!! I love it so much. I would watch it over and over again!! This movie made me cry in the best ways. Anyone who doesn't like this movie is either afraid of taboo subjects, or immature. I love that Pixar made this movie ❤ it reminds me of my childhood.
This movie is so healing for me, even as an adult, because it help me realize that it's okay to be me and I shouldn't have hide or bury those weird cringy messy part of me away. I should have been me and embrace myself as soon i discovered my like of korean drama, kpop, anime, fun activities like water balloon game or any fun activities that involved water, karate or martial arts, soccer, dancing, singing, rapping, writing or making some songs, my curiosity and knowledge to scientific stuff and new thing, piano, speaking more than 2 languages, my ambitions and stuff. All of these, most of these.. I have tried to keep it away but was to afraid of what people think, what my parents think or view me... This movie brings back a lot stuff , and trauma things that i should've heal a long time ago. I'm healing now, so it's okay.
One of the funniest UNRELATABLE moments for me is the dodgeball scene. My thought the first time I saw that scene was "Okay; TWO of you are more athletic than I ever was but NO ONE I knew could have had a conversation that in-depth while playing dodgeball. How the heck?!"
I can relate to most of this as a 15 year old girl myself, except for the 2000 and 90's references (I was born in 2007), and I'm always home so my parents never get the chance to embarrass me, I don't have any friends (introvert here) and I never had a crush in my life (yes, I'm a teenage girl who's never been creepily obsessed with someone else before, deal with it).
I'm a 15 year old and turning 16 this year and I can relate to this movie!😁 I mostly mean that I sketch many sketches about Bigwig from Watership Down because I'm deeply in love with him, he's the one I fell in love with!💖
Wanting to do your own thing while not upsetting your mom, yeah too relatable. Not every rebel teen is like Merida who just has to rebel against her mom and the status quo
Love Mei’s friend group, wish I had that kind of thing when I was little. Every time I’d try and get the other girls to hang out with me they’d always just ditch and go do something boring. That’s how I got into Pokémon and Minecraft with the guys at school.
Its interesting to see that the elders even tho having the option to keep their panda this time around gave up and did so again without reluctance. Along with seeing how ming tried to break away from her own mothers thumb, did so long enough to get married but still conformed. This I think is a movie where a sequel could be made and it would be good and not just pulled out of thin air like most are. There's still more to work with the story and characters.
the most relatable thing for me is when mei's mom bought her like 20 different types of pads, it's a pretty big teenage girl struggle to find the right pads to use
I am not from China I am from north India but the place where I live is full of Chinese culture (since buddhism is so famous here) I loved seeing Chinese culture get represented and I got a lot of nostalgia from this movie. And the illustration of going through puberty was spot on! I absolutely loved this movie
My mom grew up being told that periods, though natural, were shameful and that you shouldn't tell people about them. She never did that to me or my sister, but it was a discretion-is-key thing, so I never had to worry about her showing up with pads and embarrassing me. Me, however, I'm very open about my period and I've told plenty of kids in middle school when I was on it--much to the boys' horror/disgust.
Be glad you don’t have Margaret White from _Carrie_ as your mother. Just having your period is enough to get sentenced to that horrid closet. I bet Mei could teach Margaret a lesson, and help the titular character feel good about herself and stand up to Chris Hargensen and her cronies.
My grandmother came over for my birthday and brought lots of lovely wrapped gifts. One nice large box turned out to be a huge box of sanitary pads. That was awkward enough, but my dad was there too so yikes! I'm all for practical gifts, but that was a tad bit embarrassing.
Turning red is amazing. I’m still figuring out how people were making memes of this movie before it even came out. They also started hated on the movie before it even came out, I think that’s crazy. But honestly in my opinion the movie is amazing. The characters, the plot, everything.
When this first came out, my friend texted me and said, “I regret to inform you that we are in Turning Red”. She is absolutely right. I was in 10th grade during 2002 but this was such a snapshot of my middle and high school years, ESPECIALLY the anime sketchbooks.
Only those who get periods (and “the talk”) will catch the “now you’re a WOMAN” line. The entire team and direction is written by women, so that’s how it’s been really relatable for me. If you think anything is “fetishized” you really haven’t been online. Also, if you think the panda is only a metaphor for “sexuality” you’re like, projecting something. Would their shrine be dedicated to the uterus? please it’s an actual red panda-their family’s culture. 😔 we asian girls cant be represented without (typically westerners) sexualizing us. Also, it’s in CANADA, not USA so please set aside that “this isn’t the 90’s!” because this is drawn from a specific group’s experience. And if you’re mad about “not having a movie for boys!!” you did just have Luca and Coco.
That comment to people who were upset by the depiction of periods "we hate to break it to you but that's what being a teenager is like" was brilliant. Very well done, WatchMojo!
I LOVE LOVE THIS MOVIE! THIS MOVIE BRINGS OUT SO MUCH THINGS WE WE'RE AS TEENS OR ARE, WHAT WE GO THROUGH OR BEEN THROUGH. I DON'T THINK THIS MOVIE DID ANYTHING WRONG! IT'S PERFECT!!!!!
This is my absolute favorite movie EVER. Pixar really killed it, I hope they do a lot more movies like this. I would love a part 2 of Inside Out with this approach, I saw my life in many ways.🥰❤
This movie was fantastic, and I totally related to most of it. Mei's emotions causing her to turn into the red panda during her time of the month were the most relatable. I'm guessing I would be a brown bear, lol! Although I will need therapy for "did the red peony bloom," lmbo :)
As a 1.5 gen Chinese immigrant living in Toronto. This movie was very personal to me. I use to hide stuff and feelings from my mom. I had a group of real friends but none of them were mainstream “popular “ girl. My family always worry about how other ppl influence me. I never had the rebel phase. I felt like I’m in the “closet” with a lot of things and I started to develop a sense of self after meeting my husband, whom my family did not approve. East Asians value “saving face” more than authenticity and that’s why we bottle our feelings and occasionally become weird from that pressure.
The doodling art part really was so relatable for me because I used to draw stuff that was “weird”,and I used to try to hide it so much, gosh I never related to a character so much besides the fact that Mei is a red panda which lets all be real,we aren’t red pandas but in some of our minds I bet
I was actually born on April 8, 2003! Watching this movie was really cool because it reminded me of the year I was born in! It also….made me feel old as i’m about to turn 19! Besides that point, I relate to Mei wanting to be enough for her Mom because My Mom is the same with me! She was always protective over me and came to my defense when I needed it at school. I was made fun of as a kid for being different. Not being enough for my Mom is something as well. I have Aspergers and ADHD so i’ve always been the odd one out. Anyways, It’s a great movie!
The people ( usually adults) who thought that the film was too grown up for kids are probably the same ones who think that sex ed shouldn't be taught in schools. With some girls starting puberty while still in elementary school ( as young as 8-9) it's important that they know that what they are going through is normal and that the mood changes are part and parcel of it. This is a light-hearted look at the onset of puberty from the POV of a girl from a strict family.
When I was about 12, I drew my first "sex comic". It was just as bad as you'd expect from a kid, but it was my secret sinful indulgence... until my mom found it. She called my dad at work so they could both laugh about it. Yeah... She said it was "cute", but later, I burned each page and vowed to never draw smut again. I kept to that promise for like a minute, but I did start hiding my sketchbook after that, so I learned something.
I do remember doing some of these amazing things this movie just take you down memory lane. The chacha slide was iconic and still is today. And so relatable.totally what us millennials loved to do sketch anime . That gen z will never understand
I love this movie so much from the story to the fact that the main character is a red panda one of my favorite animals ever. And I would love to say that the idea for Number three is extremely relatable. I would also like to say that I Adore the scene where mom is asking if that has happened or not and that is just walking backwards as if he wasn’t there lol. Also I do number one all the time. I will never apologize for being who I am because that’s all I can be. There is no such thing as normal so why try to be normal
i love this movie. definitely my favorite by far. i’ve never really been excited to watch a movie but this one had me like “omg i need to watch this” and in school we actually did watch it :) i think it was really relatable and a great movie
Mei is just like me. So many problems I relate to. Between trying to be perfect, but growing into a new person. Trying to figure myself out. I just relate to it all.
This movie reminds me so much of myself at age thirteen and also of myself now as an adult and my best friend, especially since we’re really close and are looking forward to going to a concert together and even though I’m grown up, I even have to deal with my parents’ anxiety too.
The most relatable moment for me was whenever Mei’s mom yelled at her friends for taking “advantage of her” because my mom hates all my friends and thinks that I try to act like them. She thinks there “bad insurance” she thinks that because my friend said the word fuck 🙄
I couldn't relate to the teenage crush side of things because I've never had a crush before but literally everything else about the movie was so accurate in representing the life of a teenage girl. It's so good.
Watched with my oldest who is going thru puberty and we had a great time. It was a good bonding experience. I could so relate to the memories of puberty, crazy time. I really liked the movie.
Alllllll I know is I cried REAL tears at ming lee’s breakdown about not being perfect enough in the forest. Likeeeeeeeee come on let’s healllllll mothers & daughters💯🙌🏽
I have an older cousin of mine that was born in 1993 and when I saw her on the middle of 2000s like the year of 2006, she usually reads stories about vampires in her collective pocketbooks. She is also addicted to boybands, and she always tells me about her childhood and teenage crushes. One time when I discovered her photo album, her high school life with her friends were memorable. They never left each other behind. She alongside my mom told my older sister who went puberty when she was 11 years old on how to deal with this situation by being more careful by herself. I say that this movie really refreshes me back to the 2000s, where all of my childhood were spent (I'm born in 2002) since I remembered one time my family used to play with VCDs and play some hit songs on the radio or in the MP3.
I went through the proper vampire phase: Anne Rice and Bram Stoker vampire novels. Mature reading instead of a sulky threeway wannabe romance with sprinkles of "action." I did give ALL the twilight saga a try. Was sorely let down.
Yasss! I was embarrassed by my family a lot of times and when I'm dancing on my room the suddenly my mom barge in I definitely did Cringe when I watch her situation hahaha
Turning red is a very cringe movie, but it perfectly embraces reality, it’s very relatable and due to the cringe factor, it feels like there are real kids in a real world.

WHOOA! same, i feel seen!
I'm a 15 year old and turning 16 this year and I can relate to this movie!😁 I mostly mean that I sketch many sketches about Bigwig from Watership Down because I'm deeply in love with him, he's the one I fell in love with!💖
@No me?
@No no prob.😁
I resonate hard as hell with Mei holding her stuffed doggy almost all the time. That was definitely me way too late into my teens lol
I was 21 and hugging my Care Bear plushie after 9/11…
Its interesting to see that the elders even tho having the option to keep their panda this time around gave up and did so again without reluctance.
I love Turning Red. It’s funny and heartwarming
Turning red is amazing. I’m still figuring out how people were making memes of this movie before it even came out. They also started hated on the movie before it even came out, I think that’s crazy. But honestly in my opinion the movie is amazing. The characters, the plot, everything.
Kids still do this draw crushes in a note book 📕
So do I. my mum found out and I thought I wouldn’t see the light of day ever again! 😳😳😳
same 😭✋
The way Abby says “panda” is oddly satisfying...
People say where’s the movie for boys really gee I don’t know most of the movies they released
Facts 👍👍👍
The most relatable moment was that I actually was living in Toronto in 2002 and snuck out to go to a concert too 😬
Okay but did a giant red panda show up? 😂
The doodle scene was so relatable for me
Literally i would draw random boys in my notebooks and my family and friends would either laugh or tease me
The doodling art part really was so relatable for me because I used to draw stuff that was “weird”,and I used to try to hide it so much, gosh I never related to a character so much besides the fact that Mei is a red panda which lets all be real,we aren’t red pandas but in some of our minds I bet
We all know what the weird stuff was
@@MustacheCashStash125 lol,haha yeah!🤣
I was actually born on April 8, 2003! Watching this movie was really cool because it reminded me of the year I was born in! It also….made me feel old as i’m about to turn 19! Besides that point, I relate to Mei wanting to be enough for her Mom because My Mom is the same with me! She was always protective over me and came to my defense when I needed it at school. I was made fun of as a kid for being different. Not being enough for my Mom is something as well. I have Aspergers and ADHD so i’ve always been the odd one out. Anyways, It’s a great movie!
I was born on April 4th 2003
@@traydaniel0403 EYYYYYY! Happy Early Bday!!! :D 🥳
Dude we share the same birthday!
@@emirodriguez1376 eyyy! What year? Also Happy early birthday!!!!! :D 🥳
Y'all are killing it with the Turning Red videos!!!
“WhO dO tHeY tHiNk ThEy ArE? Celine Dion?” LOL, I DIED! 😂
I loved this whole movie it took me back to high school.
Also Abby's it's so fluffy . Reminds me of Agnes. In despicable me.
i love this movie. definitely my favorite by far. i’ve never really been excited to watch a movie but this one had me like “omg i need to watch this” and in school we actually did watch it :)
i think it was really relatable and a great movie
0:34 Miriam snacking on Lunchable before school start is relatable.
This whole movie is so great!! And also being 1st gen born here…yea my life lol 😂
The most relatable moment for me was whenever Mei’s mom yelled at her friends for taking “advantage of her” because my mom hates all my friends and thinks that I try to act like them. She thinks there “bad insurance” she thinks that because my friend said the word fuck 🙄
These days Ming would be arrested for watching Mei at school. lol
I couldn't relate to the teenage crush side of things because I've never had a crush before but literally everything else about the movie was so accurate in representing the life of a teenage girl. It's so good.
Me too
Watched with my oldest who is going thru puberty and we had a great time.
#1 is WELLLL deserved ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
The “IM SO HUNGRY IM GOING TO BLACK OUT!”
The most relatable Turning Red moment was when Mei, Miriam, Priya, and Abby had moments together in the movie.
I’m 31 and I’m still in a vampire phase
“If you thought this was unrealistic, you’ve probably never been a teenage girl”
Me whose never had a crush (I’m a female young adult): 😐
MsMojo putting out so much Turning Red content I no longer need to see the movie😊👍🏾
I wish they would talk more about Luca and about friendships you make over the summer
Priya's neckroll movement was my favorite character.
ALL of the moments are pretty much relatable 🙂
Loved this movie it really spoke well
Was I the only one who shipped Miriam and Mei super hard and could sense the vibes coming off of them from a mile away? Just me? Ok.
turning red kinda felt a bit complex but yet it also feels sort of short
I can relate to this movie so much... I even played flute and my mom was very strict! The only thing I couldn't relate to was the vampires.
Mom: Are you going out like that?
Her: My “Panda”, my choice!
(Friendly Reminder, 13 years old)
…9 months later…
This looks like a great movie!
I look forward to when I can watch it!
LMAO the irony that DISNEY will say pads but youtubers won't 🤣🤣
but they did
Yeah and Disney actually allowed Pixar's to use the word "stripper" in order to say what one character's parent used to describe boy band music,
The puberty one hit hard. I could not even say anything for a while.. 😰😰
Heard the phrase “turn lemons into lemonade?” Well if the lemonade tastes sweet but wrong, it’s been made from rotten lemons
Yasss! I was embarrassed by my family a lot of times and when I'm dancing on my room the suddenly my mom barge in I definitely did Cringe when I watch her situation hahaha
you know you're old when the make a movie based on the year that you where born in. i feel old now
Turning red is a very cringe movie, but it perfectly embraces reality, it’s very relatable and due to the cringe factor, it feels like there are real kids in a real world.
When ming started pullin' out the advil and pads. XD
I would say I’m kinda like Mei. Had a huge childhood of animated movies, best friends (we get our names mixed up), music and being energetic
