Adam has been using the Zenfone 10 for a while now and though he loves its compact design, it does have some flaws. ASUS is back with their new Zenfone 11, but now they've made it ~Ultra~ with a large design reminiscent of their ROG Phone 8. Will Adam think this phone is worth the death of one of the few remaining small-sized phones or has ASUS lost their niche?

Tldr: the zenfone just lost it's entire purpose.
Nobody wants small phones or every brand would be making them. It's a dead niche.
@@neondemon5137 Not true that nobody wants them. I bought my Galaxy S23 Ultra for the 10x zoom camera. I would have bought a S23 Ultra Mini if it existed. But I was forced between the choice of a smaller phone without the camera I needed, or a large phone that met my needs.
@@neondemon5137 I bought the S23 basic SPECIFICALLY because it was small. I moved from a Pixel 7 to it.
I hate large phones.
@@Sassquatch0 Now there's two of you! _Wow._
I'm not gonna be surprised if they later announce if they will shut down their mobile division.
The software updates are such a problem with Asus' phones. Especially since they've all but publicly confirmed (I've got an email confirming it) that they will not be providing a means for the people that bought their phones to unlock the bootloaders anymore. Asus betrayed a lot of their customers, not just the small phone enthusiasts.
For those who are interested or bought an Asus phone themselves hoping to be able to unlock the bootloader: Asus has reportedly already settled with one person in the UK and they got their court fees and the cost of the phone refunded.
The updates are the exact reason why I didn't get his own phone 9 it would have been my perfect phone otherwise
The rug pull on not being able to unlock the bootloader is what lost me. Had two Zenfone phones and got screwed on the second. Currently using a Fairphone 5 I hope to have for a long while now.
@@TonyOstrichi hope you arent having issues with the fairphone linus has made a video about the fairphone 5 and its issues
@@rustylarry7465 I'm well aware of the video, and I don't have any issues. I think a lot of what he brought up was pretty dumb. I find it really odd that things he is on record as saying aren't a big deal (like having the latest CPU or making a phone super thin) are things he then complained about in the video. Which is it? Can't have it both ways.
@@TonyOstrich Hes a hypocrite. Shouldn't surprise anyone at this point. He proves it again every few months.
The key selling point about the Zenfone was it's compact size. Now it's competing with other flagships like Samsung's S24 and it is not even close. Specs like 2 year support compared to Samung's 7 years, camera quality, overall design, etc. I won't be surprised they end up killing the Zenfone lineup
Only big Zenphone! 😁
samsung's 7 year support is yet to be proven. it's just a pinky promise. typically its 4 years max
We keep saying that, but the market has spoken. Not even Apple could sell small phones these days. If people actually put their money where their mouth is, Asus would've kept it small.
@@iatwiatw Is anyone selling these in phone bundles, or do you need to be an enthusiast who either lives in the correct countries, or is willing to roll dice on resellers? Because the S24 is the same size and is apparently selling better than the slightly larger S24+, and both the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro are the same size as well. As a Zenfone 9 owner, it looks like I might need to jump back to Samsung in a few years, but it's not like this form factor is unserved.
@@adriannasyraf3534 they said they will support their devices for 7 years.. that will happen 100% because if it didnt they WILL get sued
Such a disappointment, after ultra portable Zenfone 8, 9 and 10.
did you buy 8, 9 and 10?
@@adriannasyraf3534 Bought 8, plan to buy 10, if there is no non-ultra 11 or 12.
@@player1_fanaticthat's the problem... probably why they made it bigger is because nobody is buying the small phones. businesses make decisions based on statistics
@@adriannasyraf3534 he just said that he got the 8
@@Bormen414but not the 9 or the 10.
People talk a big game about „uh why phones all big?!?“ but in the end the numbers don’t lie: nobody buys small phones.
Great, my streak goes on, every time I choose a phone, the manufacturer then changes design philosophy, first Sony, then OnePlus, now Asus...
OnePlus is back brother
Maybe, but when I bought my Zenfone they just weren't.
@@jedimastu as a rebranded oppo?
@@taoying3987They've always had been.
... so it's a ROG phone with no gamer aesthetics?
why
They essentially released the same phone twice…
@@Denariio Exactly! It seems hella lazy tbh.
They could've refreshed the Zenfone series but decided "You know what? Last gen was good gen." They're making Apple look like the good guys 😭
@@DenariioI to jest genialne, cywilny ROG. Już go mam w wersji 16/512 i sprawuje się genialnie.
It was bound to happen when they made the generic smartphone design for the ROG phone. Nothing wrong with that if this was a bit cheaper. The ROG phone is for a niche audience, now they have something to market for the masses. They'll probably add a non Ultra small Zenfone refresh and have a decent product lineup.
Yeah, and the new ROG also lacks most of the gamer aesthetics, which is very disappointing for me. Like, at first I let it slide because I thought Asus was discontinuing the Zenfone series, in which case it would be understandable to make the surviving series more universally appealing. But it turns out Zenfone is still around and ROG Phones still got nerfed
I loved the Zenfone 9/10 camera bump
THEY DID THE SCREEN FINGERPRINT READER. SCREW THAT.
side button/back sensor supremacy
or heck, front button (iphone se gang)
It really does seem like an obvious decision
that bump makes using it with a case so obnoxious
@@ab2aasd That’s just any modern phone for you
@@ZaHandle nah, my S10's camera system is basically flush against the back and barely feels like it's there
Watching this from my Zenfone 8. I love it, but it seems Asus has lost the plot here. The entire draw of the Zenfone line was the compact size, flagship chipset, and none of the extra fluff (paritcularly around the camera) which led to a compelling price.
RIP Zenfone. 🕊️
Hmm, so last options Xperia 5 V, Samsung s24, Pixel 8, and Xiaomi 14...
xperia 5
others are much wider
Not a fan of the OP+ 12 or Nubia Z60?
@@Z4KIUS Yeah, but it's more narrow. Although, it's still better than exynos and tensor. And Xiaomi 14 has some good things going for it, just a bit bigger at 6.36 inches.
@@Triflixfilms Both of which you are talking about are 6.8 inches, and at that size I would rather get the s24 ultra. Although, my point was for the now only remaining "small" phones.
@@sirwlat xiaomi has the worst os in this bunch though, samsung being the second one on the bottom, it's a shame they went the Chinese route, before that they had much better experience
22 seconds in and I’m disappointed in Asus
It took you 22 seconds!? I went in jaded
Congrats on the weight loss Adam! You're looking great man!
I hope they realize this decision was a massive mistake and for Zenfone 12 they go back to the smaller size.
It’s literally what made Asus’s lineup so special, this new ultra phone is just saturating the market with another gigantic almost 7 inch ultra that nobody wants.
I want this phone and I have it 16/512 Black. 😁 I'm really like big Zen bicouse 9 and 10 was to small.
Problem is, no one bought the Zenfone 12. Nor the iPhone minis, hence why they were dropped also. I know there's a small market for both but that's the problem, it's a small market.
Its the opposite if you look at sales and market share. Asus's dramatic decline in market share coincides with the years they sold smaller flagships. It went from about 7% when the zenphones were 6.5inch to a measly 2% today.
Far from being the size that "that nobody wants", the larger format is where all the value is for the manufacturers.
Despite their loudness on the web, the small phone crowd are in practice a drop in the ocean when it comes to actual consumer demand.
@GHOSTSTARSCREAMM no one is designing their phones for the US alone or making products specific to a single market... At best you see country specific variants of global models to cover particular bands.
Specific models may be focused on specific markets (e.g. "Realme" is an Indian market first brand) but at the end of the day, they are all designed to be marketed globally.
@GHOSTSTARSCREAMM You are the one mentioning the NA market out of nowhere... Not sure how that was relevant either but responding to you pal.
I have a Zenfone 10 too. Very happy with it. Disappointing to see that they are moving away from the smaller form factor.
Such a weird phone. They had 2 bangers in a row filled with unique features people loved, and now its just another "flagship". And also the design, its just straight up ugly lmao. At least it still has a headphone jack i guess...
Right but it turns out people loving a phone doesn't mean it sells well where is this is basically just a re-skinned Rog phone so there's very little development needed
@@profosist in my personal circle i know multiple people with a ZenFone 9 or 10, and there's no other android where that's the case. Of course this is just a tiny sample size, but I know 0 people with an rog phone. But yes very true, reskinning a phone is a loooot cheaper
@@robjobse5162 you can use the iPhone Mini as an example rave reviews but it just didn't sell
Having the fingerprint reader on the side is so much better than under the screen. I hope that comes back in more phones.
Love a good locked bootloader
just unlock it
means so much less than you think. maybe 2% of users even know what that means, and even less of them care to do anything with it
They completely stripped it of all character. Now its only defining characteristics are its non-unlockable bootloader and only two years of updates
I had just found about Zenfones and was excited to get an updated 11 till...
Love Z10. The size and design, top notch. Hoped to see the line continued. What a disappointment to see such brick with such generic design.
Nice to see someone else appreciate the side fingerprint sensor, the under display ones are slightly annoying at best and eye searing at night. The form factor does defeat the purpose of the phone though and it's great that it has a headphone back but it would be a lot more appealing if it also had a card reader.
Are we rebranding phones now? The zen looked so good with these two cameras
Despite the limited software updates and hard to get cases and replacement parts I truly love my Zenfone 9 and hope that Asus releases a smaller non ultra Zenfone 11 later in the year.
Battery life is the most important thing to me so this is amazing. I've wanted a Zen phone for a long time now but I am not sure if the phone works with my service
Keep on rocking the weightloss and hairstyle! cant wait for the final result
Seems like I'm gonna have to keep my Zenfone 9 for as long as I can, at least until something else kinda small shows up...
Do people like these under screen fingerprint sensors? I hate them, I don't understand why companies keep switching.
Same here. First Nexus, then pixel, now apple 13 mini, and the asus zenfone 10 was on the planning
Currently rocking a Pixel 8 Pro. It's a very nice phone.
I miss the absolute hell out of my Pixel 5. 90hz was plenty, and the size was excellent.
The P5 will always be a legendary device in my book. Was perfect
Please have a control phone when it comes to testing the speakers. With everyone listening on separate devices and youtube compression, having something to compare to would be nice
galaxy number is the same as the year we're in, easy to remember :)
Still happily rocking the Zenfone 8 Flip!
I would have accepted a 6" phone if they made the bezel very thin and symmetric but that on screen fingerprint sensor is a huge dealkiller. I have the fear no screen manufacturer is making a small ltpo screen >_>
GCAM does help a lot of phones which have the camera hardware but lack the software processing needed to take advantage of the same.
It would be nice to know if the phones you're reviewing have locked down boot loaders, some of us would like to use custom firmware once support for these phones ends.
The people at asus phone department is out of touch with the world
Almost no-one buys smalls phones... How is it "in touch" to supply non-existent demand?
@@JimIBobIJones why do you think regular people would buy this over samsung, google pixel, apple, one plus or any other brand's flagship offering?
it's an overflown market where the zenfone had that small form factor to make it appealing to some folks
@@JimIBobIJonesbecause being small was the only thing Asus had going for. Why would anyone buy this? No cool features like the rog phone, and Samsung has equal or better specs with their trade in programs being unmatched. What is the reason to buy this one ?
@xXlURMOMlXx they had 7% global share when the zenphone was last 6.5inch +. That went down to 2% when they made it small. How does that mean "going for it". They aren't going to become market leaders ever clearly but big phones sell more than small ones.
People would buy the asus because android is android at the end of the day and their prices massively undercut the market leaders for similar flagship specs.
@@JimIBobIJones Sources for that? Screen changing was definitely not the only variable at play. That was 4 years ago and asus still has terrible long term support for their phones, which is a big deal at stopping people I think. Also I haven't seen anyone make an argument why they can't produce small phones at lower quantities. You know, like how many other brands did for years and years. This phone seems like a copy paste job from their rog phones, zero creativity and still only 2 years of OS updates. What a joke.
I loved my Zenfone 6 and would have loved to stay with the brand but with the removal of the SD card and the smaller storage in the newer ones I had to go to a moto
I can never decide what phone I want. I got a free LG Stylo 5 when I joined up on my mom's plan a few years ago. Didn't know anything about phones at the time, and I've had it for 4+ years now. Phone's definitely getting old and slow. Any suggestions, folks? Not a big picture taker. Just want current-ish bluetooth, bright screen (amoled or whatever else is close), lots of memory (expandable if possible), good resolution, a fast cpu, and not a money sink.
Watching on my ZenFone 10 rn 😢
Sad to see the Unlockable bootloader go but it's good that it has a headphone Jack, just wish the small screen size had not been dropped
hey yo, a question could you make a review to the new thrust master eswap x2 controller ? :D its so confusing no one knows the diffrence of each, its just like what the diffrence xD
Im hoping enough people go "this is stupid" and asus launch a standard "compact" zenfone 11 before the end of the year. If not im sticking with getting the Xperia 5 V.
Xperia 5 ii to iv display has been known to suffer green/pink line issue after 6+ month of use, getting Xperia 5 V would be a risky choice i guess?
The move to the underscreen fingerprint sensor is the most disapointing thing about this device. I miss my pixel 2's back of device scanner more than any other feature and really my samsung's underscreen.
So they stopped with the flip variant?
I got the 7 Pro which is flip. In it I can set it to charge slowly and only up to 80%, which is great. But the problem is that the light never changes color and indicates full unless it reachers 100% charge. So if you set it to go only to 80%, you never know it's reached that charge level unless you check the screen. Silly.
Maybe because the sell says otherwise...that's why they stop making small phone😮💨
either way i doubt, there will be much different with any change...
Where are the sleek, near 100% screen to body ratio phones? Still waiting for an upgrade for my 2019 OnePlus 7 Pro which almost looks futuristic compared to newer phones
would you guys be able to do a review of the new logitech astro a50 x headphones
i really interested in knowing why phone battery always advertised in mha not the correct watthour which correctly tell you the capacity to compare to other batteries regardless of cell voltage or chemistry. while mha depends on cell voltage. imagine in the future when new lithium battery chemistry comes to market with different nominal voltage. you always have to reminde people this 3000 mha is bigger than that 3000mha
All this plus a locked bootloader makes it a hard no.
Makes me glad I unlocked the bootloader on my Zenfone 8 before they removed the option. Not allowing people to unlock the bootloader on their own devices should be illegal. Guess I'll be keeping the 8 for as long as I can physically keep it running.
8849 tank mini review when? or unihertz jelly star?
8:28 you just made me question my existence
i have a zenphone 9 and i love it. all these changes for the 11 make me sad. the size. the fingerprint button. the shell. the camera bump. i don't like any of it.
How is there always a new version of gorilla glass? at some point they have to run out of things that they can do with the glass.
Basically an rog 8 pro without the side triggers and type c connector with a lower refresh rate screen.. great for the 200 usd reduction tbh
I was considering getting a Zenfone 11 series phone for my mum because she has been using an iPhone 6s for years and although it still works it is sluggish and has too many problems also the fact that at the time I too was an iPhone user and when I got my first android like a month after getting her the iPhone I never wanted an iPhone again (I got the OnePlus 6T at the time but now I use the OnePlus 10T). The reason I was looking forward to the Zenfone 11 series initially is because I wanted to get her a phone of a similar size because she said she was used to using smaller phones and doesn't like how large mine is and I didn't want to get an iPhone. Now I need to look elsewhere for a smaller smartphone. I would have been OK with them releasing a regular Zenfone but they just skipped the regular and went for an ultra
I still have my Zenphone 4 and 5. I liked them for the time.
Saying the 5500mah battery isn't big is a far stretch.
I love ltt and short circuit videos, but considering most ltt employees have either iPhones or flagship/close to flagship Android phones, 5500mah is a lot of battery power.
It feels like you complained about it for the sake of complaining or having something to diss. 5500mah isn't small by any comparison.
5500mah isnt a big battery compared to a fair few other phones...
However mah isnt the entire picture as you also have voltage to take into consideration
WH [watt hour] is what phones needs to be forced to start displaying so it is 100% accurate and the battery life and or efficiency cant be cheesed by cranking the voltage
@@commanderoof4578Dude you have no idea what you're talking about... MAh is the true capacity of the battery. All phone batteries have the same voltage, unless it has 2 batteries in which case it can charge faster with a higher voltage.
@@huntergrimx incorrect mah is not the true capacity thats wh
And no not all phones use the same voltage at all dumb dumb
Its like saying a AA battery thats 600mah alkaline is the same capacity as a 600mah lithium one...
They aint cus the alkaline one has a nominal voltage of 1.2v the lithium one has a nominal voltage of 1.5v
@@commanderoof4578 You reiterated my point there. I'm from India and I know there are phones with up to 7000mah, and at the end of the day it really comes down to software optimization to make the battery work well. But my point is 90% of Android phones are between 4500 to 5500 mah.
Complaining that the phone is 5500 mah is simply nitpicking because you can't find anything else to complain about.
And software wise, the zenfones have close to stock Android, so the complaint on battery capacity is really just nitpicking for the sake of it.
@@arvindrueben im not nitpicking im saying it cannot be considered big its just a regular sized battery
one thing that really killed it for me with the asus zenfone 10 was lack of usb c 3.0 or higer ( cause i wanted video alt mode witch wirst came in usb 2.4 ) so i whend with the sony xperia 1 v ( good camera. 3.5mm jack and usb c 3.2 video alt mode )
I mean it's called "Ultra", maybe they still have plans to make a non-Ultra variant for the small size?
lack of symmetric bezels is just stupid especially on a big phone.
I'm using the Zenfone 9 and still enjoy using it till this day, and of course I do get excited whenever new Zenfone get releases, until this time.........
Personally, I wish that they could had continue making compact size phone with incremental increase in phone size (maybe to 6 inch or 6.2inch) to fit more hardware in it, but they have chosen to use ROG phone 8, strip off all the gamer element and called it Zenfone 11 Ultra? I won't call this Ultra as that name to be sounds like it should had all the best hardware coupled with longer software support (no more 2 years please).
I hate the fact that everyone said the Zenfone
gonna miss the zenfone, keeping the 10 as long as it can run.
I'm someone who rarely upgrades my phone, but after far too long I'm finally replacing my Galaxy S7. I was looking into Asus's phone especially the RoG since it's one of the few with expandable storage. Unfortunately one of the biggest issues with ASUS phones is their lack of carrier compatibility.
It seems like even being based on the RoG the Zen 11 also lost the RoG's micro SD card slot, a hard no from me in any modern phone.
0:38 Oh hell nah, I love their plastic back, it feels awesome.
F them and their glass like back
Is rog phone 8 and zenphone 11 ultra has the same camera performance?
ASUS really needs to keep the small form factor going. The ZenFone 10 is perfect. There's no need to mess this up, ASUS.
Honestly I have been using the 11 Ultra for about 1 week now, granted this is like an upgrade for me after a 7-8 year old Sony Xperia smartphone, plus got it on its Launch Offer. Mainly got this becasue to me it's a cheaper ROG Phone without all the cooling fluff and it still has a Headphone Jack which is deal breaker for me, I hate having to carry dongles . Granted I don't mind the lack of support for long (granted OS updates are really lackluster nowadays) had very little issues with it so far, had to reconfigure a few things and I also agree 4k is too much on a phone. I like my big screen on it and games are just amazing to play on it. The CPU on it is great too, main reason I didn't consider a Pixel, and theCamera isn't a bother to me, Im not really a camera snob xD. Its a perfectly fine device thatis powerful yet lasts long and hs a headphone jack which will likely last 7 years even if they are droppomg support for it earlier than others (atleast), heck my Mums Galaxy S8 runs perfectly fine and is still fast despite the support being dropped so I have high hopes for the zenfone 11 ultra.
Też mam od kilku dni, działa rewelacyjnie. Podobają mi się wersje czarna i szara. Kupiłem czarny i jestem zachwycony wyglądem i jakością wykonania.
No one ever speak of call quality. The microphone in the Zenfone 8 is horrendous, yet there was no way to know except buying and finding out
not available in Canada and if you import one wifi calling will not work.
I can't focus with that hair on your shirt lol 😢
First they removed everything people liked about the ROG phones for the ROG phone 8, now this. Did they want to keep any customers?
If you want a compact android phone there's the xperia v line, flagship specs in a smaller body and great cameras
definitely looking at that line for my next upgrade from zen10, just wish it wasn't as tall. But the narrowness is great and it's thinner than zenfone.
The bezels are way too big, on the Zendphone 10. Only two years of software updates are a deal breaker.
The Zenfone has had good video processing for a while. My 9 takes surprisingly good photo
Lots of people say they love small phones, but not that many people buy them. The same thing happens time and time again.
Idk how people can not know what the newest flagship is from samsung. The number literally is the year in which is was released
I always liked the Asus phones, but the fact they don't give more than 2 years of software support, its a no go for me. I had a Zenfone, then changed for a pixel just for the software support.
man i was always kinda sad that i wasn't able to get a zenphone, it was exactly all i wanted in a phone.... NOT ANYMORE!
Maybe there'll be a regular 11?
Disappointing I got Zenfone 9 and it's basically my ideal phone for many of the reasons mentioned in the video. I would have considered upgrading if they simply kept the old design with better specs and some minor improvements.

at some point this guy was told to be there or be square and he legit chose to be square :O
All i want is a small but powerful phone, why they now decide to go big is a mystery to me.
If you see this, you don't swap the just the lens out, it's the entire back cover
I bought every previous zenfone but I'm skipping this one, what the hell happened to the small form factor that zenfone was famous for.
They merged the design with ROG Phone to cut cost...
I was going to buy ROG Phone 8 but the punch hole on the screen, the lack of front stereo speakers and the lack of LED notification light were deal breakers to me
I'm sure people who use Zenfone also have similar feeling when it's not a compact size phone
you compare the labs data to a pixel 8 but not to the previous Zenfone 10?
Logic???
Because they're not really comparable anymore since they're completely different phones aimed at different markets
Ultrawides tend to be the worst sensors, and I can't recall ever using mine... On the other hand I find myself wishing I had a proper macro weekly.
Just ditch the damn ultrawides, phone companies, give us halfway decent macros.
As someone who plays genshin all the time on my phone, the Zenfone 10, despite the flagship snapdragon 8 gen 2, overheats like crazy and drops frames after a good 15 min of gaming. Depending on which version of the phone I was on, it either clocked down to 50fps once it reaches 40°C and to 40fps when over 45°C, or like what it does now, clocking down at randomly intervals, leading to moments where I could be getting 60fps, then the phone shits itself to 35fps and huge lag spike. For the rog phone 6, iirc it drops to 50fps at like 45°C and 40fps or lower at 50°C, but it performed much better despite being a snapdragon 8+ gen 1. Even though they can run hotter than Samsung or pixel phones, I'm surprised how crappily they perform compared to xiaomi's flagship and Nubia red magic. Disappointing performance, but if I'm some Normy person who just wants a decent phone, it's great, besides the camera which is even more inconsistent compared even to older OnePlus phones 😔 wtf Asus, your past phone had just one outstanding feature, and you removed it, now all your phone are basic and not even value for money
I think it was Marques...but the Zenfone 11 Ultra is the ROG phone without the ROG branding and gaming features...
My hope is that the "ultra" for this one leaves room for a non-ultra "mini".
Feels like the reviewer didnt even used the device before taking the video
I will never understand why a grown man would want a baby phone. To be fair though I have large hands and some do not so I guess that may be why.
The small form factor was the only reason to buy a zenfone. I was recommending this to friends who wanted smaller phones.
Now it's just one of the many 6,7 inch phones, but doesn't have nothing over it's competition.
We need bootloader unlocked ASAP, Asus.
A battery test compared to the previous model would be way more useful then the rog phone .
I think that reasons why iPhone 12/13 Mini & Asus Zenfone 8-10 didn't sell that well are a bit different.
standard iPhone (from X to now) was 5.8-6.1" & that size is still quite compact, so Apple really had less need for a Compact phone.
Some people bought Minis (mainly women with small hands & pockets 🙃) but still most people went with Standard or Pro - Mini Poro didn't exist. Also that's Apple, it's religion here, people buy to those because they work or because they want to feel elite.
In Android area flagship compacts are IMO a bad idea - mid-high range with compact size & smaller price but decent performance could en up better, but...IDK..?
Maybe people really buy with eyes on specs & I guess ,,biggeh screehn, meahns betteh!"
I own one of the best mid range phones of last years & it's 6.1" so still compact enough, performs well & battery lasts long enough. No Jack tho :(
I forgot - this mid range was also competitively priced.
The key selling feature of the ZenFone was its price. At least back in the days of the ZenFone 4. Unfortunately, things have changed, and the Galexy A series has put Asus to shame. When I can get 2 flagship phones and make a car payment for the same price, you know Asus has lost the plot.
