Analogue is back with another modern-retro console -- the Analogue Duo! Made for Turbografx 16 and PC engine games, Tanner is here to help David decide if he regrets his pre-order, or if this is the ideal way to play the classic games from yesteryear.

MiSTer is recreation or simulation of hw. Not emulation. It's not capable to recreate up to a ps 3. Second failure. N64 and ps1 is the most it can simulate. Dumbing down technical terms to appeal to a bigger audience shouldn't be the standard of a tech channel. ☮️
I am french and at school there was a franco-japanese guy. One day he invinted me to his home and the PC engine was there. I couldn't believe my eyes how small it was and all the great games it had. I had a blast that day and I have never forget it.

And played them of small carts.
The yellowing of those old consoles isn't always from smoking. It happens naturally with age. I've heard tell it's mostly UV from sunlight doing what it does, breaking chemical bonds like a divorce attorney for plastics. (Though smoking doesn't help literally anything.) I've also heard tell you can reverse it with some kind of hydrogen peroxide scrub, but never had occasion to do it myself.
i can back this up, most polymers aren't UV resistent. It is the same today, the industry only pumps in so much phenyl rings as fillers into the polymers as a protector, that they polymer longer holds its intended color and shape. (since phenyl rings also are UV absorbant and getting distroyed by UV).
Retrobrighting, a mixture of peroxide and distilled water that you soak the plastics in then set in UV light (even sunlight works) for a few hours.
I had a midi keyboard that sit in a box for 4 years in a smoke free room and the keys when from white to straight up yellow 😅 It's some off gassing process that cheap plastics have. Hydrogen peroxide / retrobright works but it also damages the plastics to some extend so you can't do that infinitely.
Heat does it as well. Ive got an 2x Amiga 1200s one on my desk and one that was on a shelf near the radiator, it never that yellowed but I had retrobrited it years ago anyway. My desk based machine was fine, but the one on the bottom shelf out of sight by the radiator turned into the most yellowed machine I've ever owned.
bro is writing poetry about consoles getting yellow
10:25 As the owner of an 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth controller, they overlook a lot of things with their controllers. My controller cost $70 USD and at the time the lower tier version, the Ultimate 2.4g, didn't have Hall Effect joysticks and didn't have Bluetooth when it launched at $50 USD. Now the Ultimate 2.4g is essentially the same controller but with way wider device compatibility, Hall Effect sticks, Bluetooth and is cheaper. The only difference in features is the Ultimate Bluetooth having an actual pairing button, Gyro support, and Nintendo player indicator lights. Otherwise the Ultimate 2.4g is far and away the better deal.
Wait, so the 2.4 Ghz version now has bluetooth support and hall effect sticks? Are you sure? I can't find any info on this
I never thought I would hear about PC-Engine stuff on this channel! I really love Blood Wolf, Break In, Bomberman '94, Keith Courage, Daisenpuu and King of Casino.
Any clue who is gonna pilfer it from inventory tho?
She goes by Emily now@@CromulentCorpse

Also the PC Engine CD also has a kick ass version of Double Dragon II that's based off of the NES version but with updated graphics and Anime style cut scenes.
I have a superNT and love it to death. That said, if I bought any FPGA console these days it would just be a mister. Especially at that price.
Yeah man the mister kicks ass, its the most played console in our house and we own everything here
I have to say I have been absolutely loving all of the videos David has been in lately
his killing it!
Yeah, love that he usually shows products that can play retro games with modern convenience
Someday itll be retro time again. Gonna be mad hyped when it is. (David is also great. Just gotta respect the OG)
My cousin and I played so much air zonk when we were kids. Every time I would talk about it none of my friends knew anything about it. It's really cool to see this return.
I've heard that, in the theme of it being "duo", this time they'll be shipping out units in the double digits.
When can we have Emily back?! We miss her!
David’s been doing a lot of retro gaming content lately. Maybe I’m out of the loop, but where’s Emily been? Didn’t this used to be her area of expertise?
Ever since she came out then she's barely been on camera, probably just so she doesn't have to deal with the comments that will inevitably come.
I have wondered the same thing but @@BelacDarkstormis probably right. Being a trans person on the Internet sucks, it's probably worse if you're on a big RUclips channel
Makes me want to fulfill my Ninja Spirit addiction. Legendary Axe, Keith Courage, and Slaughterhouse! Bring back the nostalgia!
Good hosting btw, nice to see some different people talk about their hobbies
Dungeon Explorer II on the CD addon of the TG16/PCE is probably one of the best Gauntlet-style games of all time, and it has a kick-ass soundtrack too. Anyone looking at this should check it out. It can be played solo but it actually has support for up to 5 (yes, five) players. It's sick
I'll forgive you for thinking Ys "started on" the Turbo Grafx because you almost pronounced it correctly. It actually started a little earlier in the PC88/MSX/NES era.
I thought the two presenters was referred to as the Analogue duo 🤣🤣
Turbographics + Bomberman = Best dorm room drinking game of all time. Highly recommend.
I still have my original turbo due… love it!
Super cool deep dive on this product!
I'm super excited for Analogue's N64 they're releasing later this year. I've got a stack of N64 games, but I don't have space for a CRT. I could probably grab a Retro-tink (and probably still will at some point), but I'm really interested to see AnalogueOS on the Analogue3D, as I really like AnalogueOS on my Pocket and want to see what people do with it on a much more powerful console with thumbstick support. Also, native 4k support and no region lock. Also also, the 8bit-do controller they tease at the bottom of the Analogue3D page looks pretty great (though I'm actually a bit of a fan of the original n64 controller, even if it might just be nostalgia goggles.)
I feel like having tech quickies to reference about hardware emulation and FPGAs would help a lot where the details dont have time to be fleshed out here (and possible missed with how quick the remarks are being done).
Anyone else notice how Tanner uses his right hand on the controller?
I dont understand
I had a TurboGrafx 16 and loved it. I wish I had all those old games still.
listening to you talking about playing with your Mister made me giggle like a hecking child, 10/10
As a non-turbogrfx fan, I am so tempted to get the Analogue Duo. I purchase their NT, and SuperNT and Mega systems, but I also own physical game carts for NES, SNES, and Genesis. Turbogrfx is the only console I don’t own any games for. Scouring eBay, those darn games are EXPENSIVE!
I would have been more interested to get one if I own games. From my experience with their other SKUs, if you want the best console to play physical games with native digital video out in HDMI, Analogue products are unbeatable.
Analogue is working on a N64 compatible product, and I do own a few N64 GamePaks, so I’m definitely interested in that once it’s available for order.
Dude took the product out of the box and shook it like it owed him money
Gradius II on CD was amazing
The device has a beautiful color. Lost to mostly black cases.
"Legally backed up" lol
"100% LEgit" on those CDs had me in tears... haha
I love the 80s-accurate ivory color of the JP model. CRT filter is the best I've seen so far, anywhere. Still waiting for save state updates though!
Save state update released a couple days ago!
Damn, i really love that clean simple look
From the US and had a TurboGrafx-16. Games were those little card looking things. Anyone remember Splatterhouse?
I wouldn't mind a follow up to this about the RetroTink4K for upscaling the 1080p signal to various 4K resolutions.
i love mine especially now with jailbreak... having all games that exist in a single sd card and playing them fpga is really nice
The original Double Dragon DID flicker!!
Pc engine LT is like a laptop monitor thats similar to the old ps1 ones you could get. Pc engine gt is the Japan release of the handheld turbo express
Analogue Pocket + MiSTER is the FPGA combo that satisfies all my needs
I have two analogue pockets and it’s amazing
Friends and family know I have retro games, and like to play them when they're over. I wouldn't dream of giving my kids/friends/family a "MiSTer experience". I love my Analogue devices.
13:20 N64 core is done now and runs fantastic on mister
I WAS waiting for Mars FPGA - but no way I'm going to give that company money until the product is in the hands of the first buyers.
Analog + Ever Drive is the perfect Duo.
Got 4 minutes in, and I remember I am usually priced out of these devices. Jumped ahead and was relatively surprised.
Speaking of mister I'd like to see a video covering the recent updates in the mister ecosystem such as the tapto nfc reader.
Tanner's entry cracked me up for some reason
YES! LTT MENTIONED THE YS SERIES!
The Bonk series is wild!
The Analogue Pocket, with the dock, and the TG16 adapter, is pretty similar (missing CD), plus let's you play so many other systems, and is portably.
You're talking about a $420 purchase (Pocket + Dock + Adapter) for something that can only play half the PCE library. Pocket is cool but if you're looking for PCE games the Duo is a way better purchase.
The questions are always what do you want something to do or do you expect out of it and what are you willing to pay.
Once you come to terms with those two questions then it's just a matter of ease of use and stuff like that. I still prefer for the pocket 100% I just don't see the point in this unless you are using physical games in which case this is the choice to go with I guess.
But I've never against more options and more choices, bring it on, the more the merrier.
Rondo of Blood is sooooo good.
love fpga consoles, love the aesthetic and cleanliness of analogue, hate their marketing. $250 with no controller when its going for retro console feel is craaazy
DUDE. The word is not “fustrating”
It’s “FRUSTRATING”
Jesus Christ, David. I had higher expectations of you.
Me, under 25 and not a Retro games guy, listening to the first minute: ""ah, so the yabadu, whis is actually the hibbeatata, was the predecessor of the uiuiuiuiui, while in the east devices like the frrrrrrrrrrrrr where more popular. Interesting!"
Me under 25 understanding everything that was said. I'm so cool 😎
Turbogrfx is also an underrated Ye album
I'll only buy one of those FPGA based custom consoles when they add PS2, Dreamcast and Game Cube to them.
As soon as there is a digital output we don‘t really need a FPGA console. With a modded Wii U you can play GameCube games. Not from disc though (I think). N64 is coming (from Analogue and to Mister)…
There is still a use since all hardware will die someday. I’m honestly still waiting for an fpga psp even though I have a Ps Vita.
@@yoshikinanami7434 well, that's certainly better. PS Vita can't hold 30 FPS on tons of games. A better version would be ideal.
@@The_Affable_Grump It's not about the output. It's about the 1:1 hardware emulation so you can have all consoles in one and the ability to use ROMS, all of it while having no added input lag and slow downs from these software emulators. Now, if you think FPGA can't achieve that with PS2, Dream Cast and Game Cube, that's something else entirely.
@@CeceliPS3 It will be a lot more complicated. But those FPGA wizards are making good progress with the N64 which is supposed to be a more difficult system... But in the future it will require a much more powerful FPGA, as well. I think this might be the biggest problem as it has to be at a good price or it doesn't make to much sense as no one will be interested.
@08:02 "including the SuperGrafX games. There was like 16 of them that were made". 5 SuperGrafX were made. Then there is an additional 1/2 which could use some SuperGrafX gfx capabilities.
It is a fairly complete package for a great system
What would be a good solution to play original PAL SNES cartridges? I'm looking for a modern solution to hook up to my sony trinitron.
If Analogue ever make a multi console, that plays the main 8/16/32-Bit consoles and arcade cabs, with real cart and CD support, I'd be very interested, it would have to have realchip audio support though, with legit OPL2/3/MIDI/Chiptune audio hardware built-in, a high-quality audio DAC and DSP, with full 36-Bit analogue video output options, they could get away with a HQ DSP & an all-in-one synth audio processor with specific audio codecs for each system. FPGA is not very good at audio generation, it's great for pre-sampled/sequenced audio, but you need either a fast RISC or X86 CPU for good audio emulation, and better yet a legit audio ASIC or DP, which have processors designed to crunch and process audio properly without artefacts, jitter, clipping, popping, timing issues and so on.
bro I thought the guy on the right in the thumbnail was Gustav Vasa at first, lmao.
Sure !
Did you guys put a ridge wallet on the ground while filming b roll for the Vessi advert?
The 8 Bit Do controllers are fine, but I miss the Turbo Pads
Thankfully the mini one they released a few years ago came with USB versions of them
Those USB controllers cost over $100 used nowadays. You're better off buying the originals from the 90s.
Not sure the controller not included complaint holds any weight, considering the plethora of ways to connect nearly any controller you already have.
You have entered Power Drive.
That sir is classic computer beige. Not pre smoked. 😁
OMG Bonk! I remember that game!
LOL 'retro shelf' - David needs more vintage gear XD
3:25. Dude your wingspan ain't 3ft. Proves that Canadians can only measure in "canadian attack cobras/geese", "maple syrup" and "ER wait times"
Mister FPGA for everything up through the PSX/N64 era, then PC software emulation for everything else...
I take umbrage with calling that a volume rocker. It does not rock, it's a wheel.
I'm older than LTT guys but not a fan of retro gaming. The only game I emulated was to try out ChronoTrigger around ten years ago or more. turns out it is amazing technically, gameplay, and rpg.
Pretty sure it outsold the NES at one point. For like 1-2 years the PC Engine had the highest console install base in Japan.
That is which for a few years there were PILES of CD games that released on it over there at one point and kept getting updated.
I just did the second update yesterday and Nexzr still doesn't work, or the Nexzr caravan disc
As soon as you said they were caught up on backlog I immediately went and checked the website (which I'm sure everyone else did to) and by the time I got to the site EVERYTHING was sold out, and on the mega-sg page it still says "Sold out, shipping q2 2023". Yikes. I'm not so sure about that caught up on backlog bit.
Fabulous
Sure this comes out after I got my PCE suitcase.
I want Analogue to make more of the Pocket.
Was hoping it would start with the it's retro time opening
I think that's only when Emily hosts
Who else want to see more retro consoles/games and stuff.
Waiting for Analogue's N64 console to be seen more.
I nearly bought one of these, but instead I got the Analogue Pocket and Dock.
David talks about how he likes it to plug and play and then just gushes about all the options xD. Ill stick with my MisTer, never gonna own any real Turbografx games at the prices they are now & I get access to so kmany more systems. Would love to know the input lag for the controllers on the Analog Duo.
Why not use a usb power hub for day to day use and switch to the recommended when doing anything critical like firmware updates.
Me at the start: "That colour is just what plastic on tech used to look like!
...
Fuck I'm old"
Heh, I thought everyone had forgotten about the TurboGrafx
Micro A & B connectors did not happen until 2007.
Finally, someone said it in video, fpga is still emulation.
why no 1440p & 4K output tho
Bonk
On iOS there are at least three applications with the same logo.
TurboGraphics?! Wwooww can we bring back The Jaguar next??
Im old enough to remember what a pc engine looked like when new and it wasnt smokers beige it was white, i wanted one so badly (a friend had one)
I believe the beige is inspired by the PC Engine Duo-R
Ys didn’t even have an attack button lmao. You just had to sort of headbutt enemies to death
Still not sure why popele would get these dedicated consoles (at them outragious prices) vs just getting a mini pc with emulator.
Smoe hardware might have *slight* advantages over emulators but I dont think it is in a impactful way and you have much more customizability on emulators.
11:23 This Guy is a psychopath holding the controller like that
You already get a thumbs up for talking about the Turbo Grafx, but you get two thumbs up for projecting Ys correctly.
