A hands-on overview of the Fujifilm XT2 mirrorless camera and how its features compare against the original XT1 and X-Pro2. This video is part of my review-in-progress at cameralabs.com which includes my first impressions having tried a pre-production model and which will later expand into nmy final review with full tests, sample images and movies.
So happy to hear someone else cares about the sounds of the shutter. I hate the sound of the shutter on my A7RII. I actually miss the mirror slap sounds from a DSLR

What a genuinely interesting and thorough initial impression/preview. I might have to buy an X-T2 in September to complement my new X-Pro2. Could seriously consider selling all my Nikon DSLR stuff then.
I bought the XPro2 and I'm regretting it. The only thing I find cool is the looks but the OFV is the only main difference with the XT2 while the XT2 has 4K vídeo, double battery and tounable screen capability at lower price!
I am sorry to hear you are regretting buying the X-Pro2. I hope you will be able to get a good trade-in price against the X-T2 when it is released, or a good sale price if you sell it now. I actually love the X-Pro2 for its looks and its range-finder style. I have been using Nikon SLR and DSLR cameras for many years and I am still really enjoying the totally different experience the Fuji gives me. I love the lower weight, the film simulation options, the ease of EV selection and both the number of AF points and the ease of selecting them with the little joystick compared with my D7100. Might still also buy an X-T2 when it comes out though as it looks awesome.

Yes, sir, very nice review! The only thing that might be worth mentioning is the FLOG for the video is NOT enabled for internal 4k recording, but rather is a HDMI out function.
That's a good point, I'll check that today. and confirm.
I have confirmed that F log will only be on the HDMI output, NOT for in camera recording. A shame sunce ut woukd be nice to have a flat profile for internal recording even at 4:2:0. Thanks for the tip!

I own the Xpro2, and there is no mention if the, "image tweaks" that's what I call them, Highlight tone, Shadow tone, Color, Sharpness, and Noise reduction are enabled in the video recording for the X-T2? They are disabled on the Xpro2, which is an absolute bummer!
I remember watching your review of the Nikon D300. Soon after I bought that. This time, I bought the XT2 with the battery grip and am watching your thorough review of the XT2.
I wish they had kept the movie record button since it could be used as a Custom Function button on the XT1. The AF joystick is a nice replacement, but would have been even nicer if they had both.

Good point here : the shutter sound is really important, much more than anyone would think : it translates how good and how smooth the mecanics are working. A smooth and well damped shutter reflects quality and durability.
UPDATE on 2-8-2022. I did buy the X-T2 and loved it. Later I pre-ordered the X-T3 and then the X-T4. I still have all of them, use them regularly in different situations but still prefer my X-Pro2 and I take this out pretty much every day for street photography as I love the form factor. I have never been interested in the X-H series but could be very tempted by the X-T5 if the rumours are true. And, of course, I still watch Gordon's videos.

I would like if you had discussed the extra weight/size of the XT2 and what it means to you.
X-T2: 133 x 92 x 49mm and weight 507g with its battery and card in place,
X-T1: 129 x 89.8 x 46.7mm weight 440g.
I bought a Nikon D80 too as a result of a CameraLabs review - must have been about 7 or 8 years ago. I'm a Fujifilm convert now. Very good reviews Gordon!

My Huawei Pro mate smartphone with two Leica lens does everything for $550 and I can put it in my pocket why would I waste money for a crappy Fuji for $1,800 it doesn't have Ibis and can only record 4K for 15 minutes before overheating. What a joke

Gordon is NOT correct when he states that exposure compensation cannot be locked on the X-T2. After selecting compensation with the front command wheel (compensation dial set to C) you can in fact lock your setting by simply pressing in the command wheel... press it in again to unlock..
But how do you stop the compensation dial accidentally turning from C?
Compared to the X-T1 the compensation dial is quite tight and so I would think any accidental turn is quite unlikely in most situations.
It is tighter, but I've still had it turn accidentally on mine.
I wonder if tolerances vary...on my copy of the X-T2 its simply not possible to move this dial in error. In fact, with the X-T1 I used the tip of my thumb to move the compensation dial (which I quite liked) but with the X-T2 I need to use both thumb and index fingers. For me the solution was to set this dial to C (set and forget) then use the front command dial for compensation adjustment. Kudos to Fuji for their thoughtful approach to ergonomics...
Very nice review as usual, Gordon. Having said that, I would love to see a video dedicated to critiquing the image quality of the Fujis, Olympus and Sony cameras. And not just a review that looks at the measurable, or quantifiable, qualities of the files being created (noise, resolution, etc.), but an analysis that considers more personal impressions such as colour, transitions and the impression of depth as a function of the camera's unique sensor and processing engines. Not sure if this is realistic but it sure would be cool.
I like the sound of that but it would be extremely subjective and personal. But here's the short version! In terms of in camera JPEGs I like Fuji best, followed by Olympus with Sony last of that threesome.
Interesting. Sometimes, I think that a personal, or subjective, evaluation is underrated. Reviewers and readers will spend hours pouring over the same standard quantifiable "indicators" of IQ, which are essentially scientific comparisons of a sensor/camera's performance against some set of standards, while perhaps forgetting that a camera's output is almost always measured subjectively.
Art is subjective from both the standpoint of the viewer and the artist/photographer. As a reviewer, who also produces some very nice photos, I think that your personal evaluation is relevant. I would like to see more of this sort of thing, in addition to the standard evaluations, from notable reviewers/photographers. Thanks for the reply. :-)

I love the gorgeous pictures, and the text adds insight (for example, the reasoning behind choice of focal length in "The back street")... I agree. The X-T2 shutter sound is great!
Just a though about the in-body image stabilization vs. image quality/image circle. Fuji could bind in-body stabilization with a small additional crop at the edges. It wouldn't have to be much - a few pixel wide only - and is no big deal at 24 mPx.
Can't believe some people are going on about the lack of a touch screen, it's a camera....I started out with an Olympus OM10, moved onto a Rolliflex/Hasselblad/Nikon F3/F5 as well as large format De Vere cameras and then onto digital, how did we cope back then!It seems more and more 'techy' types are getting onto camera's, (not photography as I don't think it's their main interest), and rush out to by the latest new body that comes onto the market, I'm sure Fuji are cashing on on them.As for me I got a feeling the XT2 will be a great bit of kit, I'm keen to rent one when I can and try it out with the 100-400 lens on a sports assignment, maybe it'll be the end of me lugging around D5's with the usual 300/400/500 monsters!
I am with you Tony I had no need for a touch screen in a studio environment nor a darkroom for that matter back in the day. Let photography be what it is and use that thing on it called a viewfinder otherwise use a smartphone, although in saying that a touch screen would help in navigating the menu yet again in saying that the reason why I bought the XT1 in the first place was for the dials on top and less navigation
Great video comparison Gordon. Out of interest would you still buy an Xpro2 in early 2018 especially with upcoming kaizen 4K firmware update. I however have no interest in video just purely stills. It looks aesthetically a stunning camera
Some people love the aesthetic and approach of the X-Pro design - it's certainly great for street shooting. But for me personally, I prefer the XT series for its articulated screen which I find more useful than the hybrid viewfinder. It really is a very personal choice! I don't know about any updates to the X-Pro series, but you may want to keep an eye on the rumour sites in case they do.
Nicely done Gordon. I'm thinking my A7 will be replaced and my journey BACK to Fuji will begin. This is the camera I've been waiting for them to make. Better late than never I guess.

The image quality is amazing if not a little sterile. The lenses are getting so big and sadly way too expensive to continue investing in more. I really miss Fuji lenses. There is something special about the rendering. With all the speed and the new sensor, I think this is a huge step for Fuji. Plus it would be nice to get back to a smaller lighter kit.
I do love both systems but I just finished a wedding shoot and I swear every time I hit the shutter I thought everyone was looking at me. They'll keep getting better as will Fujis but again, Sony have effectively priced themselves well beyond my means.
the sofa works too. was going to mention that but didn't want to get too off the topic. still up in the air about which Fuji to get pro or xt2. in the long run i think the xt2 may offer better flexibility but the aesthetics of the pro2 are impossible to beat.

Well i bought the Xpro2 the other day. To be honest I just like the look of it more and buying on the fuji refurbished shop site saved 300 pounds (including googled discount code) and still got a years guarantee from fuji. So very happy indeed. now the new quandary of what lens begins.

I still can't believe they made one of the side doors so well, with that positive click and mechanical lever.. While the other side door looks to be only marginally better than the one on the XT-2, that has failed me time after time after time. As well as the chassis grip peeling and coming off completely. What do you think about that side door?
Great review Gordan pity I jumped ship from my EOS system one year ago to the xt1 because now I just have to have the xt2 and grip just too many goodies to wait it out another 2-3 years for the xt3. Keep up the good work! Hmmmm perhaps my xt1 as a back up body for wedding work wouldn't hurt rather than selling it
Fantastic review. I'll definitely pick this up to replace my OMD Em5 once the price drops a bit. I'm surprised they improved so much after releasing the XT1 only two years ago & doing tons of firmware updates. Shame about the touchscreen function; it's fantastic for photographing candid moments on the street. Maybe I'll remap a custom button for shutter.

Very comprehensive and useful. Just about to plough all my meagre savings into this camera (after looking at all the competition - caveat, waiting to see the new GH5 too). Now I am interested in video, but this camera - too me - has the least negative features of all the cameras I have been looking at (Canon 80D kit and Sony A7S II). The one niggle I have is the lack of a fully articulated touch screen, as I am into video I am left thinking 'what is portrait?' The stabilisation (or lack of it) made me grimace...All in all I can't help thinking that I wish the Canon 80D and the XT2 would have a baby! :) I really will have to spend every penny of my savings to afford the XT2 (and it's power grip) so my worry now is which lens I can afford, as I doubt it will be more than one!!! Again, thanks for the very informative video.

I am dying to get one. I would, however, like to see the audio and video ports covered by several rubber covers, so you can expose just one, and not leave a door wide open for all of them.

A great review as ever, but I missed a proper mic setup. I was getting more interested as the review went on especially with the extra facilities on the battery grip; then the (lack of) stabilisation bombshell. Busted! It seems there's always a gotcha.

good review as always - just a side node - I have the X20 - X100 and X100s and Xt1 - ( sold my XE1and did not want to get the Xpro1 due to super slow AF ) and yes the X100 was touted as this incredible camera - ok yes nice image quality - but that is if you ever get it to focus :) - the slowest focusing camera I have ever owned - but that sure did not affect the reviews for it - which is my point, I find all these enormous praises of all Fuji products regardless - like another brand got as a negative that it did not have 4k - but it was just fine for the Fuji Xt1 not to have 4k - I find that rather unfair - the Xpro1 remains legend of a camera similar like the Canon 5dM2 - although the AF speed is terrible on the Xpro1 -
Of Course no Touch LCD - and that is still just wonderful although other brands get criticized if they do not have it -
No Flip out LCD - no Headphone Jack -
There is no hope that Fuji will ever make a Touch LCD for the Xseries - the Purists hate Touch and do not even want ability to turn on or off - which leads me to the point that the Purists must hate Fuji now for implementing 4k video :)
I have the NEX7 and A6000 and A6300 and A7 and A7r m2 and same there no Touch LCD - this is a total shame as no way of Pulling Focus during video - as I find my A6300 often pic the wrong subject - yes it does ok on larger subjects - but trying to select certain human faces in a group is often frustrating - yes I can register faces - but also no - as it is not possible in many cases
So no Pulling focus for the Xt2 - other issue no IBIS in the Xt2 - I do not expect Fuji will ever implement IBIS -
a shame as all their primes do not have iS - but then again the Purists have no use for IS in primes they say -
I am glad to see the improvements in the Xt2 - better focus system - dual card slots and stick and more flex in LCD - although I think the $1600 price is a bit high - just do not think the price hike justice the few physical improvements - one expects certain improvements without a price hike - otherwise cellphones would be $100.000 now :)
So Fuji having issue with size - having to have the battery grip really adds size and weight and is a must if one shoots 4k as only 10min of 4k rec time without grip - but that again puts the camera at close to $2000 - which is more then the Sony Full Frame A7s M2 which has 4k and IBIS for example -
Seems to me that Fuji gets the most praise regardless - then Sony despite issue then Olympus and the Bastard Child Lumix that everyone thinks is rubbish - but personally I enjoy more using my X85 over my Xt1 or A6300 - and it is much cheaper - I have own Nikon - Canon - Sony - Fuji - Lumix and Olympus so I am not a brand bigot - just by observations - Don't take me wrong the Xt1 and I am sure now the new Xt1 give super nice IQ with the many nice Fuji lenses - but I think Olympus and Lumix have also marvelous bodies and features - and I find them less frustrating to use

Touchscreen would have added to the overall price. Maybe they realized they'd lose sales with a higher price point so the touchscreen was a no go? Just a thought. Either way I really think this is gonna be a Big camera when it comes to sales. Thanks for you opinions on the camera much appreciated.

Hi there, i have an option of getting the xt1 w 16mm 1.4 or xpro2 body only for same price $1100, which is better to get condidering this will be my first mirrorless and first fuji
about 30% or so of shooters are left eye dominant... so for them, as for myself, touch screens are a real problem for two reasons... The nose is on the screen and since most of the face is obstructing the screen, it's not feasible to use it while looking through the viewfinder (which is how photographers use cameras).
I'm a left eye shooter and it's only an issue with older touch screens. On newer models you can disable portions of them, like, say, the left half, or even disable them altogether when using the viewfinder.
@@cameralabs Yes, I've tried that feature on my XH-1. I find it entirely fiddlesome and much prefer the assurance of the joystick. Though, fuji has to shorten the initial delay on the second AF point advance, so that the joystick wouldn't "feel" sluggish.
In the end, I set the touch screen to off since it offers little advantage from my point of view.

Does the XT2 support small or medium size RAW files? I prefer shooting RAW for weddings, but I'm concerned the increase from 16 to 24 MP might unnecessarily slow my workflow. The ability to pick small or medium RAW was one thing I liked about Canon cameras.
Have they come out with the minimum iso video setting? I can't find this information yet. It's not that I would use this camera for video, but on occasion, one might with the new specs. The minimum is 400 on the xt1 so the video use on it was more crippling.

I hesitated a bit while you mentioned fuji circles. Intending to use prime lenses only, especially 56mm 1.2, should I worry about imagine stabilisation? I shoot mostly people, whether street or portraits. I would choose one extra lens - a wide angle - for my travels, but that should be fine as most of the time I will be pretty solidly stuck to the ground (if I am not hanging off a rope somewhere). I believe that f1.2 will be fast enough, but in lower light, would this lack of image stabilisation play a role?

Gordon please feed back to Fuji that we need more then 3 bracketed exposures at 1EV apart. We can't do HDR photography with that. I would like to see 3,5,7,9 bracketed steps. Even the old sony A6000 offers 5.
I have fed this back to them and I hope it may be resolved in a future firmware update. I hope!

Have Fuji improved on the battery monitor? On X100S and now X-T1, you see battery full to warning then dead. Of course I am referring to camera with no grip.
they definitely have... I own the X-Pro 2 and the X100s. It used to drive me crazy with the X100S
Touchscreen is less battery juice. IBIS forces bigger lenses with bigger image circle(just look at sony Gmaster monsters)... I plan to switch to Fuji in the future.

Just because YOU don't want it, (touch screen) doesn't mean that it shouldn't be an option. Battery life isn't an issue when you have the grip and 10 batteries! I always carry a lot of spares when doing an outdoor shoot.. Just makes sense to. And also, just because the feature exists, doesn't mean you or anyone else has to use it! It's actually really dumb not to have it at this point. IBIS is totally different and I'd have to agree fully .
Dough, can you read what you just said. You said battery life isn’t an issue, WHEN you have a battery grip and 10 batteries. THAT SOUNDS LIKE THAT WOULD BE A BATTERY ISSUE. I forgot to mention, the touch-screen would raise the price point then people would be complaining about the battery life and the higher price point.
+Hector Silva Nonsense Hector. Battery life has been an issue with Fuji from day one. I have to carry that many batteries on a shoot regardless of what I'm doing, just in case. A person would be foolish NOT to carry that many spares! I also use the grip, so it's 2 batteries at a time, and the grip battery goes first. Granted, I've never gone through hat many batteries, but it is entirely possible to do, if I'm chomping he hell out of my shots.
I've learned to not chimp so much. As for adding cost, that's also nonsense. The Panasonic GS8 has it and is less than half the price of the competing X camera. That feature is becoming quite common these days. Again, you can turn it off and not use it. Being opposed to it is quite silly.
IBIS doesn't require bigger lenses. look example Olympus 25mm f/1.8 and
45mm f/1.8 as both covers APS-C sensor but are designed for 4/3" sensor with IBIS (as 4/3 standard defines image circle instead sensor size).
Those lenses are far from APS-C lenses sizes with same optical properties.

Yes indeed they have. Panasonic and Olympus cameras (m43) have an amazing focusing system and the touchscreen is a VERY valuable tool. If Fuji designed a similar focus system and touchscreen I would switch to Fuji.
And with what camera of these compnies you can have similar colors like the fuji?
Or similar lenses like the 16mm 1.4?
Panasonic/Leica lenses for m43 are really quite amazing. The 15mm and 42.5 mm especially are brilliant. The image quality that I get from those lenses, along with the GX8 sensor, is really quite amazing.
Thanks for this great video, I have only one question regarding new FW4 AF modes. In either Zone or Wide/Tracking modes, When half-pressing shutter button sometime several autofocus points (green boxes) are highlighted in green showing it achieved focus - my question is: which one of those boxes the camera is actually locking into for the exposure ??? sometimes there will be several boxes highligted in a zone or wide/tracking some focus on objects in the front and some locked on objects in the rear - when I fully press the shutter release - which of those boxes is actually used by the camera as the focus point ????
How big is the new eyecup? I bought the bigger eyecup (don't remember the name) on my XT1 and I quickly realized that it covers the screen a little bit when looking directly down on the camera (with the screen pointing straight upwards). It was actually really annoying so I switched back to the original one.
Also, I hope the door on the left side doesn't start bulging outwards the way the door on the XT1 did.
How does the x-t2 compare to the Nikon D500? Which camera would you recommend for someone that had a fuji finepix 31fd in the past but moved onto using just my mobile phone! i want something with great stills for landscape and wildlife which has great video capabilities too.

how's the left door? The one that hides the usb/hdmi ports. Mine had to be replaced after 1 year because it was bulging so badly that my XT1wasn't weatherproof anymore.

Well I currently shoot with an OMD EM1 and an XT1 so the XT2 certainly does interest me! I'd upgrade from the XT1 for the tilting screen, better controls and image quality.

How would you select the focus area with a touchscreen when your eye is on the viewfinder (and subsequently your cheek on the LCD)? Makes sense with a phone and x70 because your are viewing the LCD screen.
You're right, touchscreens are most useful when composing with the screen.

Is that paint wear on the bottom of the back fold out screen already? - I presume this is a loaner so maybe it arrived that way? or has it worn off in the short time you've had it? sure looks like it at 24:00...
It's a pre-production sample, so we can't judge it yet!

Seem to me all I would need would be the x-t1
finally an old school photographer who agrees with me on the touch screen !. I've talked to my other fuji and Sony users, non of them express any interest in having the touch screen to focus. Cuz non of them ever own an Olympus with that feature like myself, its lighting fast and useful. The most important feature that the D750 NIkon offer for me is the touch screen compare to its siblings D610 and D800 believe it or not.
This goes the same for people who insist on using the optical viewfinder. I still love my D700 viewfinder but situation like dim lit room, electronic viewfinders can provide so much more info and features.
Its 2017 now. move on people, whatever works better is better.
It's funny, most people who don't want a touchscreen haven't owned a camera with one.

I feel the same way about Fuji's failure to include a touch screen.
A touch screen can really really speed up so many things.
the joy stick is a half cooked solution.
However they did a cool job on the tilt screen. I also believe that it is quicker than a full articulating screen.
Still have no idea... Should I buy X-T2 or X-Pro2 with 23/1.4 or Leica Q as a main body with standard wide angle? :) Got X-T1 with 35/1.4 and 56/1.2 and 5D3 + 35L + 85/1.8 + 135L .. would be lovely to leave 5D3 at home :p

Fujifilm tells me you can but I've not been able to try that yet. You would need a USB 3 plug for the camera end though.

Nope, sadly not. They don't see it as important for owners of the X-Pro2 or X100F. I disagree..
Does the XT2 shoots RAW files? (You did not say anything about RAW image quality) If yes , are they any good? They are fairly crappy on the previous Fuji cameras. Who the hell uses un processed JPEGS in earnest these days? Well, I am happy You like all theses 'ding dong gimmicks' like the clicking sound of the shutter etc. The 'footprint' of Fuji mirror less APSC cameras is almost as big as standard mirror box cameras. Fuji lenses are generally good quality but quite big. I fail to see any compelling reason to embark on the Fuji system.
I use Fujifilm for my personal work because it produces such good JPEGs straight out of camera. Pretty much everything I shoot professionally is JPEG and I get no complaints. But yes of course it also shoots RAW, and I always test RAW in my reviews at cameralabs.com
