    You have had to have three years in the army be even think about SAS selection, or Royal Marines for SBS. Even if a person passed the selection, they do training throughout their time constantly, in which they could get kicked out from their squadron at anytime no matter what. Recruits doing selection have died in the past due to the Tree jumping (para in jungles) and Escape/Evasion courses. They even had to make the training easier just to get more guys in the squadrons back in the 70s/80s.

    @Orlan54 The 1st ever Special Forces Unit was formed in 1941 in Scotland asked for by Churchill to do black-op/clandestine missions. US Army and Marines were then trained in 43/44 in Scottish bases to train them for the D-Day landings & then US formed the Seals as a result. Even today we (US) send our elite troops to UK for training and send instructors to UK also. Worlds 1st Special Forces base was a Castle in Scotland (Castle Douglas, i think) it is still used to train operatives today.

    Beckwiths "Delta Force" is a good read too. "Paddy Mayne" is a good read too, he was the co-founder of the SAS but David Sterling gets all the credit. I also have a South African friend who served in Rhodesian SAS before it went extinct. They fought the communists in african bush (the character Danny played by Leanardo De Caprio in blood diamond is a former member of that unit). Every animal snake and insect can kill a human in that environment and they lived it for months on end.

    @texasrangersr1 :
    As for the Green Berets, Lecce is correct and so are you. They were first given the green berets by the british commandos who trained them, but that headgear wasn't a part of their official uniform till Kennedy gave permission for the beret to be a part of their regular uniform

    @texasrangersr1 I never mentioned the rangers, I said the green berets were formed in scotland (or had it's origins in scotland), as this wiki extract points out:
    The origins of the Green Beret which Special Forces personnel wear can be traced to Scotland during the Second World War. U.S. Army Rangers and Office of Strategic Services (OSS) operatives who underwent training from the British Commandos were awarded the Green Beret upon completion of the grueling and revolutionary commando course.

    @LecceDiPane the Green Berets were formed in the 50s from the OSS,Rangers,and the Devils Brigade by a former OSS operative named Aaron Bank he formed the 10th Special Forces Group the mission of the Green Beret is mainly to train either local gueriilas or a government force something the SAS dont have much experience in the mission came when OSS agent went to occupied Europe to help Resistance fighters later moving into the Pacific(OSS agent were the 1st Americans into vietnam during WW2)

    @LecceDiPane All Royal Marine Commandos wear a Green Beret...everyone gets a green beret upon passing out. Only differing factor with each unit is the badge (& feather worn in the cap on Parade). My cousin is 45 Commando RM Condor Zulu Co.

    @texasrangersr1 Pretty sure the US green berets were made in WW2 in scotland and and were trained by the british commando unit now known as 3 commando brigade royal marines (who also wear green berets).

    @texasrangersr1 They may all have their own origins and regimental histories and leather-bound collection of odes and ballads and what not. Nobody's disputing any of that. What LecceDiPane is pointing out is that SAS and SBS are the originators of most of what we know as special warfare and small unit tactics.

    Yes, but the Rangers took credit for most of those kills. Yes I know SEAL's were there too. I have read the book. Goes a lot more in-depth than the movie, and a great read.

    A US Marine goes through just as much training as a UK Marine. 6 Months total. If you compare that to Special Forces (Green Berets) theres no comparison. It takes 36 months, 18 to 24 months of initial training followed by 18 to 12 months of unit training to be fully trained SF. Next to Pararescue, which is over 2 years, green berets have the longest Special Ops training and there the most versatile.

    No brother I never failed high school english as a matter of a fact my AP scores came in today i scored a 4 on it which is beyond exceptional. The JFT2 are proffesionals in the business but not in the caliber that the NAVY SEALS are.

    Well Kasem, you have just hit the nail on the head..aside from training standards and ethos, specialisation is exactly why US SF are not as good..they only focus on certain areas..whereas the SASR and 1NZSAS are jacks of all trades my necessity...they are single units which do all of the roles that the different US SF units do...SASR rotate through CT for black ops, they do unconventional warfare, counter insurgency, a maritime role like the SEALS, green ops etc. US military have always

    The SBS used to have their own separate selection process that was "supposedly" a lot tougher than the SAS process. Now their initial process is the same but the SBS still have a small separate selection after for their own purposes. Nobody knows what it involves. Unlike the SAS and just like DELTA there is only one SBS unit in the world. Delta and the SBS had Bin Laden pinned down in Tora Bora before civilians in DC ordered them to Stand down, this was actually aired in 60 minutes.

    I'm also trying to get to the point that comparing Specials Ops is point less. Each unit has a specialization, that's why there called Special Operations Forces. Green Berets are Unconventional Warfare experts, Delta are Counter Terrorist, SEALs are Maritime Spec ops, PJs are paramedics. If they all did the same thing at higher & lower levels of expertise. There would be only one spec ops unit, not the dozen or so that are present. So comparing them is like comparing apples & oranges.
