The battle between the UK and Argentina over claims to the Falkland Islands systematically merged weapons technology of air, sea and ground. An Argentinean invasion yielded a bombardment of speed, weaponry and destruction.
I was almost 18 when Argentina invaded and I was shocked and a little ashamed when I saw the pictures in the paper of our Marines being rounded up by the forces of a foreign power and I was so proud when our brave forces re-took the Islands, I still am proud of what they did, balls of British steel every one of them, not many countries could of done it, the yanks reckoned we would need to outnumber their troops on the islands 3-1 but we were the ones outnumbered 3-1, brave brave lads.
I agree! What makes it more impressive is that we were outnumbered about 7 or 8/1 with over 10,000 Argentine marines on the islands, compared to about 1,800 Members of the British infantry, this includes 22 SAS, SBS, Royal Marines, 2PARA and many more.
"Mission Impossible" and it's a shame Homer was not still alive to write an epic poem about this war, in which Brits and Argies fought for Nation and Honour.

Argentina has a lot of history
In fact Buenos Aires and London have a strong resemblance.
I am American but have ties with both Argentina and UK. I love the two and recognise that the conflict is nothing more than a plot from satan to divide.
Britain had litigations and fought 4 other countries
Spain, France, Holland and Ireland. How did the UK achieve peace after the nasty conflicts with them?
Dividing land.
The hand of the Creator split the Falklands, leaving St Charles strait between them
It could not be more reasonable;
East Falkland continues exactly the way it is,
And West Falkland to be administered by Argentina
Impressed of how fast the UK could organize that task force.

The irony is Thatcher was the one who pushed Neoliberal policies
The one who helped create the single market,
The one who encouraged the pro europe faction of her party unil she was forced out due to her turnaround
The one who helped create Tony Blair who was a Left wing Thatcher and allowed mass migration of Cheap Eastern European migrant labour into the country undercutting working class wages and causing strain on public services............and ultimately where we are with Brexit.

I have often wondered what the war in the Falklands was all about. It is a good thing, in this day and age, to have access to such resources on a given subject. Cheers for posting this highly informative program.
The Argentina Junta was impopular, they looked for some distraction and occupied "las Malvinas" trying to unite Argentinians and take focus away from protest vs the junta...
This presentation is one side of the "official" story... which is often far from any Objective reality. If you're interested in more of the official story - especially with consideration of the Argentinian side of things, search around under Argentina's name for the islands, "Malvinas". Here's some stuff to get you started if you are interested:

I find that the stories portrayed in TV documentaries like these, while valuable for the video footage they provide, often present a version of events that conforms to the narrative given by the State (in this case, mainly the UK). And in every case, the State will always put itself in the role of the Hero/Protagonist who prevails as the Winner (in some sense - some victory will be proclaimed)... even if the participants in war are all really losers.
Personally i think there's something else going on (more than 38 scrap metal workers, or even territorial squabbles) when these implements of mass destruction and death are called to action, but the public will never be given the straight truth - probably because it would shatter the illusion of the world with which we are presented.

This was the first war I remember following as a child. It was fascinating and terrible from my dad's tv and the radio at boy scout camp.
I grew up in the late 60's /early 70's..... Cold war was going on, Northern Ireland was the only day to day real military activity,so to actually see our forces preparing to fight a real shooting war was very strange.... Surreal even..... It was like a relentless drift back to another time... Still couldn't believe it was actually going to go ahead until waking to the news that the first Vulcan strike had taken place. Then things became somewhat more exciting and although we knew we were going to kick these invaders' arses, despite the inevitable setbacks, it was a relief it was over so very quickly
Good grief what is with all the hate on here? I am an American citizen and took the time to praise Britain for standing up for itself and this ignites a fire storm of faux patriotism from the Latins? No country is perfect, every country has it's good and bad but to run down Great Britian for defending the Falklands is very immature. The United States has valued the alliance with the U.K. and with out Britain we would never have become a superpower. God Bless Great Britain,God save the Queen

Indeed. They were sadly led to an unnecessary conflict.

In truth
Argentina occupied and settled in East Falkland from 1823 to 1831. Luis Vernet was the chief minister. His daughter Matilda Malvina Vernet (1830-1924)born in East Falkland was registered as an Argentine subject.
Vernet issued sanctions to foreign ships fishing without a permit and in 1831 a problem escalated and the Americans came with a war ship USS Lexington they fought and destroyed the settlement forcing ppl out of the Islands
Argentina protested and the case went to court in Massachusetts the judge concluded that the Americans were guilty but no remedy. Meanwhile, early 1833, the British settlers arrived

Argentina only possessed effectively control over the islands for one year following their independence from Spain. And in reality the Spanish had actually taken the islands from the British who were the first to initially colonize them (The French did posses a minor settlement first, but left and the islands have no native population). Still the UK had claimed sovereignty since the late 18th century, prior to Spanish control. Since then islands have been British.
Argentina's claim is more flawed then the fact that they never held lone sovereignty over the islands. Most importantly as recognized through international law, self determination is what effectively decides control. The islanders voted in 2013 as to their opinions on the matter and with a turnout of 92% they voted 99.8% in being in favor of being British citizens. Based on this fact alone it's ridiculous that Argentina has any claim over the islands when the population that has lived their for more then 150 years supports British rule. The final issue is timeline. Even if Argentina had a legitimate claim (they don't), it's been almost 200 years since then. Does that mean that Argentina still belongs to Spain then? Because if they are entirely ignoring self-determination, its almost the same time period of control.
In essence this entire war was a propaganda attempt by a proto-facist dictator with no legit claims of the island who wanted to use the invasion to bolster public support in the face of a oppressive regime.
enjoy the islamic invasion of england, rip white england ;)

1810 Argentina Independence from spain. (UK was one of first nations to recognize, NO MENTION ABAUT THE ISLANDS).
1833. The islands was usurped by uk..(So there where from Argentina 23 years)
Read 2065 UN Resolution to. Please. There, United nations force Great Britain to negotiate with Argentina.
@@ramiromeza9537 UN Resolution 502. And this resolution did not force the UK to anything. It called for both sides to remove any military forces on the islands and seek a diplomatic solution. But that was all it did. Besides showing Argentina that the world condemned its use military force.
PS Argentina existed only from 1861 onwards.
Britain 1690: First humans on islands/first to claim sovereignty. Have lived there for hundreds of years.
Argentina 1832: Fourth country to try and claim them after Britain, France and Spain. Have spent a total of 6 illegal months there in all its history. No Argentines ever born there.
History, sovereignty and Justice.
The principles of International Law struck back here - when even the United States was fully prepared to abandon those principles completely. It fell upon us to remind the world of those principles, in war.
This spectacular effort in the Falklands put steel in the Western World's collective pencils like nothing else ever could. It also raised (documented) questions and doubts in the Soviet Union, who were alarmed by the massive impact of what they had believed were, essentially, second rate British (and therefore NATO) forces.
Reagan - or people around him - after his (and therefore America's) weakness over the Falklands suddenly realised what it meant to be part of - and to lead - the Free World. Policy radically changed soon after, the investment was made in overwhelming firepower, both nuclear and conventional, and the Cold War ended less than seven years later.
This campaign was historically pivotal. It had nothing to do with "British Empire" whatsoever (that never entered the minds of the British people) and everything to do with defending liberty, sovereignty and the rule of law. And enforcing those principles in the face of aggression if necessary. It's worth effort, the risk and the loss of loved ones.
Critics can criticise because we won. But they can't see that because they are motivated by political philosophies inimical to the freedom most of us believe in, and would die for should the hour come once again.
Well said.
Wrong. Reagan gave the Harriers AIM-9L all-aspect Sidewinder missiles. You’re flat out wrong
What a crock of dramatic, flamboyant, revisionist horse crap. I’m American and we have never seen the Falklands War as anything other than a minor quibble between a developed ally and a belligerent dictatorship that bit off more than they could chew. Reagan even sent military aid to the UK but I suspect he did so while rolling his eyes. In no way did this bellicose version of a nanny spanking a misbehaving child influence Cold War policy. Get a hold of yourself, you jingoistic moron.
There was no chance in hell that a bunch of half trained conscripts were going to defeat in battle the SAS/SBS , the Welsh Guards , or Gurkas especially when they were supported by the Royal Navy and RAF.

Please study history more! At the time Germany was threatening to invade (1940) the USA was not yet in the war. It was the British (and volunteers from other countries) who stopped the invasion by winning the Battle of Britain in the air.
James Anagnos explain exactly how germany could have invaded the uk. because its was literally impossible for them, with their weak navy and weakened air force and that they had no landing crafts. the british wouldn't even need air superiority the royal navy could do all the work sinking any ships, while accepting loses while Germany couldn't afford to lose any ships. even if they managed to land troops and tanks they would struggle to resupply them and their troops would be completely unsupported and they wouldn't even been able to hold or capture a huge part of england maybe a few towns and villages. the uk BOUGHT supplies from the us which helped stop the country from starving but that was mainly it the british made their own guns instead of buying the expensive us fire arms. before the us even joined the war britain had already started bombing german. when the us joined the war britain has already humiliated italy without support then when germany began helping italy push britain back, britain with some us tanks managed to have Rommel on the run in retreat before the us landed troops. they us never saved the uk they helped them.

I watched much of these battles on TV during those times. I was on the IKE during NATO coordinated exercises in North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea fleet ops. We worked closely with our British allies and felt we had a close relationship. Which was surprising that the USA was not more overtly supportive of UK's reclamation of the Falklands. As far as the theater of operations I had been stationed mostly at McMurdo, with some time at Siple and very Briefly SP stations. Comms with the UK, Durmont and other allies for science sharing. One would have expected in my opinion that we would allow refueling and intel sharing with our fleets. I guess the powers thought it was risky? The Excorcet missiles, Mirage and some UK planes, hearing Herculies on the Argentina troop drops on Georgia and Falklands makes one wonder if it was a risk of weapons sales that kept the USA from active assistance? That is a matter of opinion. No meaningful contribution by US troops occurred until very late in 1942 by which time the British had won the Battle of Britain, pretty much subdued the Kriegsmarine in the Atlantic and defeated the Africa Corps at the 1st and 2nd battles of El Alamein. Concurrently, the Germans had suffered a catastrophic defeat by the Russians at Stalingrad. That isn't to demean the US contribution to the war effort, it was of course vital for shortening the war CONSIDERABLY.

Embarrassing for the UK if you ask me .. Argentina, a third rate country kinda handed the UK its ass a few times.
@@dhbroussard89 In what way? When they first invaded, they struggled to take the falklands from 22 royal marine commandos lmfao. 600 vs 22 and they struggled 😂😂. Britain easily won the war in the sea and then as a soon as they landed, they pushed and never stopped. The british were always outnumbered and outgunned aswell but still always managed to win any gunfight with minimal casualties and a lot of prisoners. I think you need to go check your history lmfao
@@dhbroussard89 You need to renew the straw that is in your cranium. (You can google "Cranium" as you probably don't know what one is )

HMS Hermes would prove to be creating history as INS Viraat - the longest running navy ship in the world courtesy Indian engineers who simply had to keep her afloat in the absence of any other CBG.

You know you could just have put the British flag, it combines the flags of the British isles. Mate🇬🇧💂
Britain set up colonies there and claimed it since the 1760s even before the nation of Argentina is even established. The people of Falklands wanted to be British, and you Argentinians are not to deny that right to the inhabitants of Falklands, majority of which are ethnic Brits.
Regarding the British Empire, they only acquired one quarter of the world`s land area. Through its influence it had created the foundations of the modern world as we know it.
I love the way Argentines scream about colonialism.
Argentina is a country founded as a result of colonialism
from Spain.
And now they want to "colonize" the Falklands against the
inhabitants wishes.
The fact that the people have been there before Argentina
was even invented as a nation is conveniently over looked.
The population want to be British.
As long as the people there want THEIR freedom & reject Argentine
rule then their wishes will be respected.
And defended by the British Military.
And WE were outraged that French technicians were assisting in the Argy Exocet prog even after the Sheffield was hit. Still war is war.
WE also would love another Maggie.

@@jpcodnia9133 well this didn't happen
Looking at it now , wow already 30 years after ,, It's like unreal .So many mistakes made by both sides and it's a wonder that any soldier survived !
Foolish Argentina. What you didn't think they'd react? Also a NATO country so the rest of us would get on board as well if needed.
NATO didn't want any part of it.
money back then! The Falklands were claimed by Great Britain in 1767 but Argentina didn't become independent until 1816 so you do the maths... we didn't steal them from Argentina. We were the first country to claim them and the first to create a perminant settlement. The Falklands are British and Brussels is growing weaker and weaker by the day here in the UK as MPs and the public alike get sicker and sicker of being told what to do by a groups of unelected judges!
God Save the Queen!

Well Drone attacks can be considered terrorism as that's their purpose to terrorize, and they did ignore two countries sovereignty. It is a highly heated debate in the academic world if acts of violence under a national banner constitute terrorism, War is terror, why then can western countries not be considered terrorist nations? plus, colonialism was pretty brutal internationally...
Proud of you our army and God bless those heros which didn't come back home from this war and all other wars , God bless the Queen and our United Kingdom of Great Britain , always proud of you and supporting you with my life my Queen and my Great Britain.
My dad's best mate thought in this war as a kiwi under the British as a First Lieutenant in the British Army. Uncle Andrews still got several scares on his head after a Argentinian grenade exploded above him. Pricks deserved to lose that war

#MakeFalklandsBritishAgain we should build a wall around south america to keep them away, make the lost city of Atlantis pay for it
Maybe I can agree to that but today nations need to decide for themselves and the British also better respect that right don't get me wrong the British totally abused the new American settlers during the 1770s we all realize that now don't we?🇺🇸

No,the natives did.Leif Erikson came to Newfoundland about year 1000.There have been found remains of settlements at L'anse-aux-meadows,dating back to that time, but the Vikings left.Columbus got hands on old viking maps, and that is how he knew there was land out there, though he thought it was China. My point was, that geographicaly,no nation can claim superiority due to proximity. As far as I know, the Falklanders wish to remain British, and I am quite sure that another invasion, will be resisted.
Neither is the Falklands. It's water has oil deposits, it has strategic importance for Antarctic research missions and it's position in the south Atlantic is invaluable for the UK.
And I am not saying that, I am saying that if "the Brits love their tiny worthless islands" enough to send 1 task force, the US loves their "tiny worthless islands" enough to go into total war, subsequently nuking civilians.
Dont snipe at the UK and its decisions without considering your countries in the past.
Whataboutism
It's easy to get confused with how close those islands are.
Falklands - Argentina = 300 miles
The Kingdom of the Netherlands is made up of 4 countries...the Netherlands, and 3 other countries, Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten. Aruba sits 17 miles from Venezuela, Curacao sits 40 miles from Venezuela. The people of Aruba and Curacao and Sint Maarten are Dutch citizens, and are allowed to remain so. Should they be expecting Venezuelan invasion?

what is this obsession Latin Americans have with calling Britain "pirates"?

It's a symptom of mental retardation.
It originates from British privateers attacking and seizing Spanish galleons transporting stolen Aztec and Inca gold back to Spain. So they can't really claim the moral high ground.
Keeps them happy! They have to have a go at someone now their economy is in the gutter. It's a shame as Argentina has so much to offer but its been rulled by corrupt poiticians for so long and as long as theres corruption on that scale, the country will stay poor. Ah - Spain! wasn't that the country that raped and pilaged the local tribes who have a legitimate claim to the land they occupy and for which a great proportion of the population are decended from?
@@petertwiss4215 congrats, you just described the British Empire. At least the Spaniards made efforts to mix with the population, Brittish were more for extermination (not saying the Spaniards didnt had their genocides, but the British empire was kinda more genocidal and racial elitist.
By the ludicrous Argentian logic Argentinians do not have a right to be democratic and have self determination. Argentina is also a product of colonialism.
Argy's claimed to be Christian, shame they couldn't behave like such to the Islanders.
(respectfully) The Argentinean Army treated the Falklands Islanders a *whole* lot better than they treated any Argentinian suspected of being a communist. All things considered a *superlative* performance by HM forces. Respect from America.

As an argentinian, I do believe that the islands are historically and geographically ours, since they were stolen in 1833. However, I don't want my nation to govern those little, frozen and wind-swept islands, as it would increase my taxes in order to grant people who want nothing to do with my country free health care, free universitary education and all other benefits only available to Argentine citizens. Having them would also save the Brits the millions they're wasting to defend them.

Maybe in the UK they don't teach you that your country became rich because of the Gold they stole in ships from the Spanish, who stole it from Peru (i'm Peruvian), not to mention all the natural resources they stole from India, who lost thousands of Forrest land which are Desert nowdays...i'm quite sure those are just a couple of examples to start with...
Steal oil from Iraq, gas from Afghanistan but in the Malvinas the British Empire messed up with wrong country.
The fact remains that - whoever was planting flags and setting up whaling stations in the 18th and 19th centuries - the islanders have been British for 180 years and want to remain British. The only country espousing an imperialist and colonialist policy in the South Atlantic is Argentina. How else can you describe a country that wants to own another against the wishes of its residents?! Or is it just because the islands are 'next to' Argentina?! Well, why not Chile or Uruguay?!
