That whole concept was so nightmarish… I kinda pushed the fact that I know this happened to someone (albeit a fictional character) into the back of my unconscious
The narrator guy said that since Dawson was a doctor, he knew how to avoid hitting any vital organs while he was cutting himself, so why he was still alive.
I think you just answered your own question, he was alive because he knew how to inflict pain without causing fatal harm to himself. He didn't want to kill himself he just wanted to feel pain.
@@Cocopuffstuff I don't think he was asking a question, rather answering the one the lady asked at 9:46 . Probably phrased it wrong. and yes I realize this post is over a year late
Yeah this episode literally made me physically nauseous with the first story, made me really sad with the last story, and gave me a very satisfied feeling with the end. I just hope she took the consciousness out of the bear and put it into one of those androids from "Be Right Back."
21:10 fun fact: the guillotine didnt always work. Sometimes they forget to sharpen it and it only cuts half way. So the have to do it again while your fully alive with your spine literally spilling out puss and blood. It is said to be one of the most painful experience a person can have.
This is connected to the San Junipero episode because the same company behind the technology created San Junipero. Rolo created the sick technology but in San Junipero, the company used it for good.
Watching this from the beginning again and hearing Nish say, "My Dad lives all the way out here, and it's his birthday, my Mum wants to surprise him.." FUCKED ME UP COMPLETELY!
No fuck that. It's called having self-control Netflix is doing it the right way by having the entire show ready to watch an anytime it's up to the people to decide rather or not they want to wait.
Out of all Black Mirror episodes. This...scared the shit out of me. Especially the doctor and his experiments. 'Shut up and dance' is still the best piece of television I've ever seen. Not because I enjoyed it. But because it made me sit still....in shock...in awe...with my mouth wide open...for five minutes straight. Fucked me up man. Still get goosebumps thinking about it.
Great reaction. Been waiting for you guys to react to this episode. One of my favorites of the season. Good job noticing all those callbacks, some of which I missed. Chris, interesting perspective on the daughter's means of revenge. And good job, Margi, for figuring out the meaning behind the song being played in the car.
The keychains are copies, they aren't the actual consciousness. If they were there would be no reason to end her father. Plus she says she is ending him and her father at the same time.
I think she made several copies of his consciousness. But yea the copying/cloning is fundamentally wrong in concept. It’s not really the same person. But Most people can’t comprehend.
fuck her she cant control herself every god damn fucking time she fucks my ears up I have to lower the volume but then I cant hear anything from the fucking show ffs

Their reaction is what you hope these episodes illicit from the general public but unfortunately most people want to bury their head in the sand instance of rolling up their sleeves and working to dial back our attachment to these devices that are supposed to “BETTER” our lives.
I like to think that all cookies eventually go into the cloud like the USS Calister crew, or go into the San Junipero Universe. Or are killed if they want to be. It's how I get passed the trauma of them being trapped like in White Christmas or this Teddy bear.
i love that “always something there to remind me” is playing in the car both on the way there and back. such a fun little detail once you know the ending
You guys missed a truckload of Easter Eggs in this episode. - The company that Rolo Haines worked for is called TCKR - which is the same company that maintained the servers in San Junipero. - Speaking of San Junipero, the name of the hospital where the doctor and nurse worked was called Saint Juniper - the English form of San Junipero - The first part of the Musuem (like immediately after the photo with the woman from White Bear) was made as a mock-up to look like the House from Playtest. - I'm not sure if you got the effigy of the Kidnapper from Hated in the Nation; probably, and then it got edited out. There's a ton of others I can't quite remember right now (aside from the obvious)
A bee from Hated in the Nation, one of the most obvious is the device from Arkangel and one that I actually got from this video is the name of the gas station: BRB (Be Right Back) Also I'm 99% sure that the teddy from this episode is the same that is stored in Metalhead
I've always thought that that box full of Teddy bears in _Metalhead_ are consciousnesses stored in those Teddy bears and that's why the woman wanted to retrieve them.
You guys were so shocked that people paid to torture the prisoner lol but that type of stuff happened in real life, look up Jesse Williams his story is a tragic one and I'll only briefly summarize it, he was a black teenager who was accused falsely accused of raping and murdering a white woman, he was dragged out of court by white residents of the community and taken to city hall to get hung in front of a large crowd of ppl including kids, they hung his body over a fire for two hours just dropping him down in the fire then pulling him up only to repeat the process, before being burned the mob castrated him and cut other body parts off, after the burning dragged they literally dragged him thru the town where people took pictures of him burnt and barely alive, they stabbed him, beat him with blunt objects, and hung him yet again, with the last strength he had he tried pulling himself up the chain he was hanging from but couldn't due to his fingers being cut off, he finally died and the towns folk sound parts of his body as souvenirs and they let their children snap his teeth out, they treated his lynching like a celebration and that started lynchings that all would be treated as a celebration even had a train that would drive right pass the "show" just so people can. So yeah the prisoner tragic story wasn't far off from what really happens in real life, human can often be some of the most inhumane sick monsters especially when fueled by ignorance bigotry and hatefulness.
Ignore all my typos lol but yeah I thought you guys should know, I just recently found out about his story and it's sad not many people know and I wouldn't be surprised if the writers did write this character story based on either Jesse's or other people's lynching just because of how eerily similar they are.
Favorite reaction vid of all time! I never tire of rewatching your reactions for this episode. I hope the five of you will get together for season 5 of Black Mirror as well; you're the perfect crew for this show.
as a psychologically disturbed ex self harmer , I can confirm that while I was doing it I barely felt pain only a weird sense of Intensity and release, which in itself is a High. cause when you stress your fight or flight response releases adrenaline that your body does not know what to do with. tension release is the same pleasure one gets when they need to go and after holding it for a long while , there is pleasure in the release, not the act itself though and its addictive if your environment is full of some kind of tension.
I'm 100% certain she can transfer her mom and the lady in the bear into a regular cookie program. Like she could put them in that 80's world. Data transfer should be possible.
rolo took advantage of peter dawson’s failures and high mortality rates as a doctor, jack’s grieving and loss of his partner and mother of his child, and clayton’s wrongful conviction and hope of providing for his family just in case he wasn’t pardoned. he was a complete master manipulator and knew to attack at people’s weakest moments. also the patients in the hospital who signed up for free healthcare-but just to be used for medical experiments. that’s something that could actually get implemented irl, towards low-income populations who can’t afford healthcare, which makes it even more terrifying. i also think the irony of nish having her mom’s consciousness in her mind at the end was such a bittersweet plot twist. i can’t exactly explain why i think that is. this episode is one of the BEST of the entire black mirror series.
5:50 Yeah, we are so predictable... [fist bump as well] Putting aside the notion that a shared universe as opposed to "just easter eggs thrown in for fun" could end up having an impact on the narratives from here on out, it was an excellent episode, perhaps even in the same vein as the previous seasons.
Chris "low rate" wow Penn and Teller are f**king GREAT Magicians. Put some respeck on it when you say their names. Teller even directed a great documentary Tim's Vermeer (2013).
It's also worth noting that it's easy to say what you guys are saying now ("If I die babe, just let me die") since you're not exactly in the same situation that couple was in. (i.e new parents of a newborn baby) Kids have a way of changing how people think, and especially how they think about their mortality.
The beginning made me wonder if we'll ever get a 5 minute plus sing along episode with the Normies? If they set that up for their Patreon supporters (with the option for "mail-in" videos to edit) that would be even sweeter. Dunno what the song should be though ...
1:27 That's actually kinda fun that you say that. There is a 'Famous Death' project. It was on some Dutch technology fairs. It looks like a corpse cabinet. You lie down, get slid into there and then you start smelling (and I think hearing?) the last moments of famous celebrity deaths. Like princess Diana died in a car accident, so you smell the leather of the seats at first and then the smell of gasoline or something like that. I haven't experienced it myself (not many people dare to, I think), but... that exists :p
You can tell how the torture scene affected the man on the right and his girlfriend. He identifies with the character because it happened because of racism. The other 3 can talk about it without much takeaway but the 2 on the right are quieter because it’s more personal.
According to a comment here it wasnt cause it wasnt always sharp enough that you have to repeat it. Your still alive but your spine is exposed and bleeding.
What I find the most disturbing with the whole cookie thing is that the Carrie in the monkey and all the people in the afterlife in San Junipero for example, are all probably cookies and the not the real person. So Carrie is copied and then the real Carrie is killed, effing disturbing
Cookies are the people from uss calistor, basically a digital clone. San junipero, are actually people just uploading their minds (souls) into the internet.
30:19 - Aw, but c'mon now Chris! How is murdering someone for the crime of murder a logical argument in a just society? (Yeah, I'm being facetious; the main argument that works against executions for me is the number of innocent people that do get executed due to any number of flaws within the justice system (most often resources on both sides, and methodology (confessions for the fail))).
You know, this episode really f*cked me up as a Leverage fan because Aldis Hodge played Hardison who's love interest was called Parker. And now his son is called the same name.

One of my favorite episodes for utilizing past episodes in such an original and entertaining way. Great reaction, especially Marketa. Someone give her a monkey to hug, please. Honestly though Haynes, the museum proprietor, may have caused the girl's virtual dad prolonged suffering, but he also gave her, her mom, and the monkey the ability to spends more time experiencing life with their loved ones. Call him the devil, sure, but admittedly, the people who hated and killed him for his use of technology ironically did so using the same tech and even used it for their own personal wants and needs. Technology is neutral like a tool - it's the people who use them that are to be judged. As for Marketa, her conflicting view is that she disagrees with executing humans physically and digitally whereas sentient monkeys are allowed to live, yet she totally justifies the same thing happening to the Black Museum proprietor by saying he deserved it. This is why I love Black Mirror - our moral lines get so blurred that most people will eventually compromise their beliefs or contradict themselves, often without even realizing it.
Altered Carbon has similar themes to what you were talking about in this episode. It goes into the ability to transfer consciousness and then extend human lives and how it affects the individual and society as a whole. Good show. You should try it out.
Rolo Haynes is an incredible villain, shows up in your weakest moment and offers a deal that ultimately ruins your life. Truly the devil.
Hifza Hussain Yup
The teddy bear thing just got me. Probably the saddest/most disturbing thing in the whole show. In this season at least.

Curious if Black Mirror will continue with TCKR because they be making San Junipero and all the tech here lol kinda a cool background tech company
Therapy session for Marketa tomorrow!
You mean 6 weeks ago? This wasn't recorded today.
Altered Carbon has similar themes to what you were talking about in this episode. It goes into the ability to transfer consciousness and then extend human lives and how it affects the individual and society as a whole. Good show. You should try it out.
Been waiting for this one! 😬😬
Black Mirror takes a step further in the concept of torture.
Random question for Chris on who still holds the record for most executions via Guillotine? Hint: it's not the French.
I don't ever wanna have to see sad Marketa again :( y'all gotta protect her at all costs
the black museum is the black mirror museum, clever
This is literally Tales from the Hood but Black Mirror edition
