You know what’s the biggest mind-fuck of this episode? It’s how we’re so against the simulated dating during the entire the episode but by the end we’re happy this couple got together cuz of an app.
I think this is my favourite Black Mirror episode. Just really liked the vibe, enjoyed the characters. Really appreciated how they were written and their humor, not to mention the excellent visual direction. Good stuff!
Too bad it's not very Black Mirror-like. There's no technological teaching to learn/glean from, there's no bittersweet or cautionary ending, and the twist at the end was very predictable. It's a nice date movie, but it's the farthest from the Black Mirror formula so far.
The "Black Mirror" of it all depends on how you view AI I think. The episode is basically about big data from the perspective of the data itself. For the "real" couple to meet, a thousand virtual copies of them have to go through what amounts to emotional manipulation/torture for a year + of subjective time. If you're one of those people who're totally certain a simulated lifeform is just a program and can never be anything more then that means nothing and the episode is fairly atypical for "Black Mirror". But if you're open to the possibility that an AI can be an actual sentient being - as the simulations certainly seemed to be as presented in the episode - then the technology is very much a double-edged sword, as usual for BM.
The coolest comment I saw on this episode pointed out that inside the system everyone was always wearing wimple unpatterned clothing. They also all wear fairly similar style of clothing. Meaning, they system can only has so large of a library to simulate so much.
and in every tone! you get "what the fuck?" in a disgusting tone; a "what the fuuuuck?" in a mind blown tone; in a "oh my god, a happy episode!" tone; etc
That was the excuse, not the reason. The real reason for everything that happens in the simulation is to see if they will fight against the system in order to be together.
I knew it was a simulation the second she mentioned about how the stones always skipping 4 times, no more and no less. Also the fact that we always see them with new dates in the same resturant, very similar apartment buildings, the girl was always in the same pool etc.
I think it re-calibrated because he effectively lied to her, and if that was something she was so strongly against then Coach would have known this and reduced the time.
Nah I doubt this. The interesting thing is that the couple's rating at the end is based on how many simulations ended in a rebellion. It never calculates how many simulations ended in the couple never lying to each other, because it doesn't give a crap about this. The system clearly was hoping to test them to see if they would rebel. The only thing it cares about is if the couple is willing to risk everything to be together
I dont think it had anything to do with the cookies. Their memory only goes back to the start of the simulation wheras if it was a copy of them, they would have had their entire history. The simulation that was ran shows that even if they did split up, even if they met and had relationships with other people, eventually the desire to find each other again would be too strong to keep them apart. They would literally break the world to be together again. This WAS as happy an ending as it is possible to get for a couple who hadnt even met yet. Beautiful episode.
Well, the cookies probably keep track of brain activities and log them. It slowly learns how this specific brain works, therefore eventually is able to act in a similar way. It still is just code, therefore you can copy and paste the code as well as alter it. It does not really matter if it is a cookie or not. They are almost exact simulations, therefore very similar to a real human. For them, what they experience, is their life and their world around them is everything. Just like us. Which brings me to the dark side of this episode. Are you ready to create a copy of your brain in order to potentionally know your perfect partner? Knowing that there will be probably millions of simulated YOUs, that life and only purpose is to figure out what attracts you and makes you happy? Those lifes eventually all get killed off once the simulation ends. Where do we cross the line? Where does consciousness start and when does it have to be saved and protected? And to top it all off, you still cant be 100% sure to have found the perfect partner, because if you apply the app, you will only be matched with the people in that apps database with other people that applied. If your "perfect" partner didnt apply to the app, then you will never know. You could apply to many dating apps to increase your chance of accually finding the perfect partner, but that would just increase the amount of simulated YOUs.
You're the first person who realized that this had nothing to do with future tech like cookies. Those 1000 simulations and 998 rebellions are just how the writers imagine how modern dating apps calculate those matches. People looked too far when the answer was simple and right in the face.
The reactors asked," why stay with someone with such a long time, just to figure out that it doesn't work" and my response to it is that sometimes in life, people will go through that, spend time with the wrong person and not realize it they're not the one- my favorite episode so far, even though it has a dark twist, rather look on the bright side of it
The song is called Panic, by the Smiths. It’s a song kind of about going against the status quo, wanting to ‘hang the dj’ because the music he plays ‘says nothing to me about my life’. So that’s how it links to the whole rebelling against the system I guess.
Surprised after 2yrs posted, this comment didn't blow up more. You're right. The writer of the show used the concept,'If Spotify was a dating app.' The characters hang the dj instead of letting them control their lives.
@Last Earthbender well watching family friendly stuff is harmless and why? To bond of course but yeah watching this show with family is a very bad idea😂😂😂😂😂
Panic on the streets of London Panic on the streets of Birmingham I wonder to myself Could life ever be sane again? The Leeds side-streets that you slip down I wonder to myself Hopes may rise on the Grasmere But Honey Pie, you're not safe here So you run down To the safety of the town But there's Panic on the streets of Carlisle Dublin, Dundee, Humberside I wonder to myself. This ep was good, the entire way through I wanted them to rebel and run away together but holy that reveal! They were just a statistic in an app!! HOLY!! I thought the ending was ok, Idk how I felt about it overall. I did like it but not my fave!
This was my favourite episode! So awesome when the realisation hits, after you're invested in the characters that you were just watching machine learning so it could spit out some stats. So good!
Chris brought up a good point about arranged marriages. Navi said it was STUPID for a program to pick your relationship. Isn't that an arranged marriage?!
actually an arranged marriage chosen by parents has its own advantages. a lot of divorces occur for financial reasons, and therefore if your parents are choosing your partner, they are probably choosing someone for practical reasons. For example, picking a doctor or a lawyer. While the app will only focus on somebody who you have a personality compatibility.
It’s funny that you said about uss callister Because the director and the cast want a spin off... The director, Toby Haynes said “I was talking with Louise Sutton, who produced [“USS Callister”] and [season 4 episode] "Metalhead," and she cooked up a brilliant idea of spinning it off into a TV series.” Haynes said he’s “keen to see it as a TV series,” and the concept for the spin-off would be “this brilliant idea that [Plemons’ character] is still alive and his attempted murder gets pinned on someone. Whose fingerprints do they find in the apartment? There’s so much you could do.”
Metalhead has huge potential. While watching I accually was waiting for the robot to run up to a full human-sized robot android missing his head. Imagine a robot being able to attach and detach various body parts which can all act autonomously and hunt down humans. The ultimate killer machine. Thats fucking nightmare fuel right there and would add a lot more to the story, as well as give the episodes title a larger meaning.
@@SETHthegodofchaos Interesting. I didn't really enjoy Metal Head, but now that I think about it, it is called Metal "Head" for a reason. Hmm... I was still bored the two times I watched it, so maybe I missing something...
@@TheUKisThere Yeah, its a shame. The concept of the story was just too one dimensional. Maybe that was on purpose to put more emphasis on the survival and inevitable doom of being hunted by these robots. I just think that they ran with the Boston Dynamics robots too much and should have been more creative. The robot looks like a head, so why not give it a body. That would have been sick. A payoff worth looking forward too. The robot head already being this cold and patient killer, then you see the whole robot and you know you have no chance at all. Instead of that scene at the end where just dozens of the robot heads come running towards the house. Thats just silly and cheap...
LOL how don't they realize that this is basically how it happens in real life you go through so many different relationships some meaningless some you think we'll actually work until you find someone that you want to truly be with. The really only difference here is the technology and that is only different because it's a little bit more advanced than the technology we use
We already use this technology. It was a basic dating app. The episode laid it out at the end "1000 simulations, 99.8% compatible". It was a dive into the algorithm that dating apps use to predict matches.
The reason the system claimed 99.8% is because they were on simulation #1000 with 997 rebellions logged. That means that if they passed again, they would be 99.8% compatible. If they didn't rebel again, their app would have reported 99.7%.
The thing is, algorithms like that already exist (without the virtual reality side of it, obviously). They are called Optimization Algorithms. I know two of them: Genetic Algorithms (inspired by species evolution) and Particle Swarm Optimization, or PSO (inpired by the movement of particles). They search optimal results for a specific problem by running simulations throughout many "generations" of individuals in a multidimensional space. The individuals are identified by many variables that influence the result. The multidimensional side of it comes from the amount of variables that make it unpractical to search the best results by other means.
The reason why the expiry date got recalibrated was because he broke her trust, not necessarily because he did it on his own. So they were no longer a perfect match since trust was really important to her.
I love your take on this. I didn't even think about using cookies for this. Makes it super bleak if you imagine all the cookies died at the end. Also, I love how Chris got excited at that mention of spoilers at the end.
4:05 lool greetings from Saudi Arabia i love watching your reaction after every episode. You guys ,ake it even more fun and your remarks throughout the show and at the end are amazing to watch and see how the episode impact you. All love from Saudi Arabia to you guys.
It wasn't necessarily a "happy" episode only because the memories of those simulations "the one we followed" pretty much die & have their memories & experiences fade along with them. Yes it is a good love story but if you think about it those simulations just died as they thought they were mere living beings being able to feel, touch & understand as a real human being would. Overall a good episode
This is one of my favourites and the one I'm going to show people to get them hooked The way I hope the app works: It recognizes people around you with the same app and sounds and stuff like that, and is constantly running. It's called 99.8 and getting a match is rare but not super rare. In that case I would totally get it, and I think everyone else would too
It runs the simulation 1000 times FOR EACH person nearby you that has the app (or every combination of people in a certain range or city, whatever compute power allows). It simply shows the compatibility rating of person closest to you, if there's one meeting the 99.8% threshold. Then it tells you where they are and when to meet. 🥰 Or it could just test every combination of people in the same block or the same room, whatever. That would take less time since the number of combinations to simulate would be small. Still, we're a hundred years away from that level of compute power.
During the 12 minute mark, when Chris makes the remark about "that's how you feel in the beginning of a relationship" bit and the cute little convo he has with Marketa made me legit swoon in happiness for them. I ship those two so hard, especially after hearing them make the comment about The Lobster and how not everyone is indie A24 type film nerds like they are. I sound like a total creeper right now but 🤷♀eh, what else is new? I dunno, their love is just so sweet to watch and is 💯 #couplegoals for me. Sincerely, _NOT_ a stalker - just a random and lonely 37-year-old spinster looking for my Mister. 💕
If you guys love Black Mirror you might consider checking out Amazon Prime's Electric Dreams. It's just as good, but it's slightly more sci-fi with a heart . . . AND there are 10 whole episodes in the season. I'm about to watch through the season a second time. Great reaction. I think this one is my favorite of this season.
I like how Navi is so confused-looking at the end then proceeds to explain what happened like she SUPER got it lol😂 I was kinda confused till the end. Then it was perfectly explained/portrayed. Not hard at all to grasp. Super crazy tho and very enjoyable.
You guys looked outside the episode too much. It was all simulated matching by the app, a look inside the world of a modern day dating app. They weren't cookies or anything like that. Big clues are the predetermined choices such as food and living quarters design. Their food came instantly because on their profiles in the app, those were listed as their favorite foods. When she mentioned she liked the lamp, it was probably something she owned irl or a stylistic choice she made in the questionnaire. All of that was just the system working out their compatibility.
This was my favorite episode this season. Plus I love the Smiths song used and before I watched this episode, I read the title. I was wondering are they actually hanging a dj or using the song. Either way, glad it ended this way.
HOLY FUCK!!!!!! THAT IS ATHELSTAN!!!!!! Don't recognize him without the beard. Man even that new Royalty show on BBC or whatever with him now shows him with a beard in all the trailers. What the fuck?! Dude got ripped. Damn, I want Ragnar as a personal trainer.
@Zuoop The Egg. That episode was just about modern dating apps and how matches are determined by the algorithm. She had a basic smart phone at the end, should have been a dead giveaway.
Anyone else having trouble watching? I thought it was my connection but I changed videos and had no problem then came back and this reaction still loads slowly
I took it as 99.8% out of a thousand simulations that they match together and I thought that there were a few instances where they didn't match and it was someone else they matched with
Absolutely loved this episode and if you’re a fan of peaky blinders which is my favourite show ever!! Johnny boy was in it 😩 you guys should react to that it’s amazing!
I know this is late but Joe Cole is one of the sexiest people alive to me. See him in skins uk, wig in Mars, panties in Pluto. And athelstan, this episode was the best to me just because of those two.
I see this app being less like Tinder and more like eHarmony. You enter the system looking for a match, and then the simulations run and they tell you what other candidate in the system would be the best for you, based on your percent rebellions. Then you go and meet your match at a designated place!
these actors are great, theres' great chemistry between them
BraveSpy yeah, casting played a huge role
the guy is from peaky blinders one of the best shows ever made.
That guy look like Roomie lol
The guy is on Peaky Blinders and the girl is on Broadchurch. Both are great shows.
Massive chemistry. Made this episode a triumph.
My favorite episode!!!! Just a great story and the actors didn't overplay it. Didn't feel cheesy or corny at all.. just great television.
I KNOWWWW, IT'S MY FAVORITE EPISODE TOO
Chris Dogan me too! I was so happy when they reunited again😢

Easily my two favorite black mirror characters, they were so likable and their chemistry worked very well
Yeah you really root for them not because they happen to be the main characters but because they’re so endearing and charming.
Loved this episode so much. The twist was just so... sweet and magical. 998 times out of 1000 they rebelled to be together. That's beautiful :)
The coolest comment I saw on this episode pointed out that inside the system everyone was always wearing wimple unpatterned clothing. They also all wear fairly similar style of clothing. Meaning, they system can only has so large of a library to simulate so much.
Also the stones they were skipping on the water jumped 4 times every time.
Low-key plagiarism?
"WHAT THE FUCK" - Pretty sure every episode of Black Mirror can be summed up with this.
and in every tone! you get "what the fuck?" in a disgusting tone; a "what the fuuuuck?" in a mind blown tone; in a "oh my god, a happy episode!" tone; etc
The reason their time together was shorten was due to his one-sided observation. The computer a.k.a Coach even stated it in that scene.
That was the excuse, not the reason. The real reason for everything that happens in the simulation is to see if they will fight against the system in order to be together.
I cried at the end of this episode. Just got me right in the feels.
Definitely very existential

tsss ahhhh
Verónica Villalobos ikr I laughed so hard it was so random
DID HE PLAY ATHELSTAN??
I knew something was up when we saw absolutely no other facet in their lives. Like no one ever worked. Was always about relationship building.
Conrad or any friends
I dont think it had anything to do with the cookies. Their memory only goes back to the start of the simulation wheras if it was a copy of them, they would have had their entire history. The creators of black mirror should do that: make a spin off show from USS callister I know I’d watch it
Made me cry more than the
San Junipero episode😭😭😭
What a great episode. Great performances and that ending....wow. Black Mirror doing Black Mirror things. Incredible.
Favorite episode this season
The song by The Smiths is called Panic Its chorus is hang the DJ Liked this episode alot it reminded me a little of the movie The Trueman Show
If you guys love Black Mirror you might consider checking out Amazon Prime's Electric Dreams. It's just as good, but it's slightly more sci-fi with a heart . . . AND there are 10 whole episodes in the season. I'm about to watch through the season a second time.
Great reaction. I think this one is my favorite of this season.
Great show, there is also Dimension 404, which is similar to both but not quite as good.
Cellophanity Frog Ok, I'll have to check that show out.
I love Love lol! So this episode was my #1 favourite! I need this app in my life... help 😂😩😭
This and USS Callister was amazing.
I like how Navi is so confused-looking at the end then proceeds to explain what happened like she SUPER got it lol😂 I was kinda confused till the end. Then it was perfectly explained/portrayed. Not hard at all to grasp. Super crazy tho and very enjoyable.
greatest tv episode of any show in history easily.
I watched this twice and never noticed that’s John Shelby 😂
I actually *loved* Frank's second "girlfriend," she had me cracking up the whole way
Yeah, her acting was perfect.
@@drlee2 her acting yes but her character was hella annoying lmao so I guess she got the job done
Hail to The Sims... I mean The Smiths...
This was my favorite episode this season. Plus I love the Smiths song used and before I watched this episode, I read the title. I was wondering are they actually hanging a dj or using the song. Either way, glad it ended this way.
The girl from 'Westworld' is Tessa Thompson, this actress' name is Georgina Campbell. They do look very similar though.
The end of the episode was a happy beginning
This is still one of the best episodes of the series. My second favorite
Right behind 15 Million Merits
How does that mic not have a shock mount by now?
how does your mama's bed not have a shock mount by now?
Bro I lost it “looks like an ear of corn” 😂
This episode gives me chills.
Bro I love this episode so much
I LOVE THE NORMIES!!
I thought this was a great representation of real relationship cycles. All the questions they ask, they could ask of our real relationships
Black mirror’s best episode is oddly a wholesome love story
HOLY FUCK!!!!!!
THAT IS ATHELSTAN!!!!!!
Don't recognize him without the beard. Man even that new Royalty show on BBC or whatever with him now shows him with a beard in all the trailers. What the fuck?! Dude got ripped. Damn, I want Ragnar as a personal trainer.
HAS ANYONE NOTICED THE AUTO RICKSHAW IN THIS EPISODE.
This is BM’s best episode which is saying something.
You guys aren't the sharpest tacks in the shed
Chad Arnold so true
@Zuoop The Egg. That episode was just about modern dating apps and how matches are determined by the algorithm. She had a basic smart phone at the end, should have been a dead giveaway.
I love that Margi is part of these reactions! ❤️ More Margi!
OMG, it's Amazing ginger, Chris, you can't give happy for this godness.
that guy is also john from peaky blinders, a great show
good to see u all :-) nice one - love the show! best wishes from berlin! @all
He died in Peaky Blinders but gave us an amazing story here. RIP John :(
Delete your comment. You can spoil someone.
So the system worked actually right?
Anyone else having trouble watching? I thought it was my connection but I changed videos and had no problem then came back and this reaction still loads slowly
I have problems too. Only this video it's not connection.
by brother!
Marketa looks SO good with the orange hair and short bangs, I'm shaking !
Interesting discussion about job at the end.
The actor actor in this is from Peaky Blinders. Would be cool if you guys checked it out, really popular in England!
They promised each other not to look at it. Broken promise = lost in trust.
I love this episode.
I took it as 99.8% out of a thousand simulations that they match together and I thought that there were a few instances where they didn't match and it was someone else they matched with
I was patiently waiting for someone to say that's Athelstan from Vikings lol .
This episode really reminds me of the movie the lobster. I like this better
He is an EXTREMELY likeable dude, great actor. Pairing him with Georgina Campbell was a stroke of casting genius in this episode.
I see this app being less like Tinder and more like eHarmony. You enter the system looking for a match, and then the simulations run and they tell you what other candidate in the system would be the best for you, based on your percent rebellions. Then you go and meet your match at a designated place!
