By far, my favorite "Black Mirror" episode also; a twisted Star Trek reprisal. I see you recognized that Kristun Dunst did a walk-thru of the sceen early in the show; she just happened to be on the set that day; became an "extra".
I'd never watched Black Mirror before, as a Star Trek fan, this one piqued my interest for obvious reasons. At one point, I might have taken exception to the geeky loner being the bad guy, but I found it to be a very timely commentary on toxic elements within pretty much any given fandom.
I love that we feel sorry for the guy at first but then we that slowly realize he's a creep and then sadist. Also love that Jessica calls Jessie Plemmons "Landry" from FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and not pyscho Todd from BREAKING BAD!
I thought it was amusing that the look of the 'game' in the custom version was TOS, but after the crew escaped into the main game their costumes ended up more like those of Enterprise or Discovery, while the ship interior and lighting (with lens flares!) is very JJ Abrahms reboot. I think Walton sacrificing himself to save the ship is almost certainly a reference to Spock in Wrath of Kahn. The conn officer wanting something like 'engage' to be said before he gets the ship underway is definitely a TNG Picard reference. The game update being a wormhole might be a reference to Deep Space 9, where the wormhole and the aliens/prophets who lived there had a big influence in changing the course of the show. In TOS especially the crew were often tormented by god like beings so the whole episode is itself somewhat a homage to those episodes. The disappearing face trick is in one of those episodes "Charlie X" The crew continuing to live on in the procedurally generated game universe may also be a reference to the TNG episode "Ship in a bottle", where holodeck character Moriarty gains control of the Enterprise and wants to be made real (something the crew cannot do). In order to resolve the situation they engineer a virtual universe for him to live in. Not sure if the apartment being number 402 means anything specific but in the TNG episode "The Nth Degree" Reg Barclay (A Team's Dwight Schultz) a normally nervous and reclusive crew member who in the past has recreated holographic versions of the other crew members to play out his fantasies (TNG 3x21 "Hollow Pursuits"), is knocked out by an alien probe and gains increased confidence and intelligence. In the episode the Enterprise-D was going to tow the probe to Science Station 402 for further study. Additionally the production numbers of all the TNG episodes begin *402*. That may be a stretch as far as easter eggs go, but this is Charlie Brooker we are talking about. The guy has an encylopedic knowledge of tv.
Love Plemons, I never noticed Dunst in this before. They're both great together in the Fargo series season 2. I think that's where they met and got together too from Fargo. She won an Emmy for that show.
Yay! Glad to see so much love for this episode! It was my favourite as well, it just... worked. Fantastic. And the same reaction to Aaron Paul. My husband was like "Naaah, I don't think so..." and then the name pops up. So smug, lol.
I loved your reaction to this episode! I felt exactly the same things about it while watching it. And it's also my favorite from *_Black Mirror_* (it used to be "San Junipero" before season 4). Loved the concept, the picture, the scenes, the acting, the characters, the story, the ending... Everything is just perfect!
hands down my favourite episode too. I love everything about it, and the setting/plot was so insane, not to mention i was clenching my butt cheeks the entire fucking time. Also, YOU WILL CALL HERRRR!!!!
While this ended in a high note, when you think about it , the characters in his game are just AI. Realistic digital sentient copies but AI regardless nothing different from a simple enemy in a space video game. So if we treated the trapped characters in this episode like the AI in video games and not care about them, what about the people who are real? While the AI are trapped their real selves are still in his company treating Robert the man (while clearly losing his mind) who basically built up this revolutionary engine like shit despite being the second boss, I bet you after they found out that he has died they are just going to spit on his grave (not literally but you get the point). Also like someone said before didn't he set the room to do not disturb? that means it will take days or maybe even weeks to discover that he is dead and when they do i bet you the first person they are going to question is Nanette Cole for a possible homicide, Why you ask? She broke into the house on the day he went quiet/died because she was blackmailed into stealing items out of the fridge, she wasn't wearing gloves so it will be easy to track her dna.
I love that you enjoyed this one so much! As well as all the nods to various Star Trek shows, when they went through the wormhole I got a distinct The Black Hole (1979) vibe when they stretched/warped inside it. Noticing your cute present sitting on the top of your sofa made me think of a later episode in this season. 'Monkey needs a hug!'
I think this was a Top 5 episode of the series. I’ve never seen Jesse Plemons in anything before, but his acting was phenomenal in this. After having seen all of Season 4, if I had to choose ONE actor for an award, it would be him.
Black mirror is so well written with some stand out episodes, especially series 3. I’ve been a fan of Charlie Brooker ever since he wrote and presented his satirical political and review WIPE shows here in UK starting over 10 years ago. I also think he may be a contender to take over running dr who in the future
around 9:00 OOOMMMMGGGGGG (yes, like you said) THIS WAS SO TRAUMATIC FOR ME You should have said omg when he blew the poor child out of space. That moment was pure evil & sad. Killing a little innocent kid and watching him suffer by screaming..at least they did not show us on camera the kid getting blown Also on 9:31 you seem that you are going to get so emotional too...
On a somewhat connected note, it's such a shame CBS were so unpleasant about Star Trek reactions. I loved the first season of Discovery and if we'd had your reactions it would have been even better. I'd love to hear what you thought of the series, I wonder if there'd ever be a possibility of a review video for season one.
If they are stuck on the game in the end but so are we. We are just on planeth earth and we wonder and die, they will do the same but on space. So its a lottery win if you ask me.
I definitely feel for him, but what he did is evil. He let his resentment grow and allowed it to corrupt him. But the episode doesn't show him suffering under the treatment he receives for no reason. I think both sides can learn from this - don't abuse people around you because nothing good will come of it, but also stand up for yourself and don't allow your resentment to get the better of you. Instead of working on himself and overcoming it, he let out his anger and hatred in his little personal universe and became what he despised.
Letitgo101 Hie is the girl who turn him down treat him like shit? She not obligated to be in love with him. How did the girl who didn’t smile at him treat him like shit? How did that child treat him like shit?
So Daly was the brain of the company and he dies. The company would go bust too! If the police senses any foul play and starts investigating, Nanette will get in trouble. Many lives are gonna be ruined not to mention Daly being dead.
A near perfect episode. Just didn’t understand why the pics of hers were that revealing for her to go and break into her coworkers apartment and rob from him? They didn’t look THAT revealing. If anything a normal person would have went to the police lol. Other than that it’s a bad ass episode and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
I would have preferred an ending where the Callister pops out into the real world. They could have beamed up their tormentor and promised _him_ an unpleasant time without the release of death.
zoppie nobody should be treated like that, I believe that conviction is what differentiates us from him, don't you think so? He shouldn't have done it, and so shouldn't we
People saying this guy deserved to die, but kids all over the world play video games and are just as nasty to NPC characters. He never did anything wrong in real life, in fact he brough joy to millions! It's a shame they couldn't have saved this for season 17, episode 01 though!
Rich Mond When did computer game becomes so complex that they have self awareness, ego, care about death , and defy their creator? I must have missed that. You'll be happy to know that they're kicking around the idea of a USS Callister spinoff series.

They need to. Imagine the potential for interactions between the real people and their virtual counterparts. It's like Star Trek + Tron!
They never did it
I wish they would

I noticed. The first thing I thought of was the 2009 movie.

I think the procedurally generated universe was a nod to No Man's Sky, a game that Charlie Brooker has played and defended publically.
Yep, it was Kirsten Dunst
