Whoever made the decision to not show any of the real world elemenets or even say its a video game in the promotion for this episode should get a raise. My enjoyment and excitement went up 100% when I saw the real Daley walking into his office and the episode just wasn't a Star Trek parody. Brilliant promotion.

I totally relate with you. I'm not a star trek fan but since it's black mirror I decided to watch. it wasn't the first I watched because I'm not interested if it's purely a space thing. but then I saw Daly walking in the real world and yes like you, my excitement went 100%!!!!

10:05 he's not dead, he just unable to quit the game and eventually starved to death according to Brooker.
In a way that fits better I think, in the end the lack of being able to manage himself (messy flat, never trying to solve issues with people) or his life is what killed him.
Though I was under the impression that a part of his mind was left in the world and got deleted when the modded universe was, which in a way is better because it means he ended up having himself become a prisoner of a universe he used as a prison.
Oh well, I like both endings I guess.

It emphasizes that he’s made no social connections in real life so no one will actually look for him. It’s really sad and shows just how important real life still is in this ever increasingly technological world
I don’t think you understood Daly’s personality at all.
He’s not messy because of laziness, he’s depressed. His social skills didn’t “deteriorate” because of the game, he created the game BECAUSE of his poor social skills. He’s only a C-level exec because of being the founder, not because of leadership talent. So in that position, he’s floundered due to his meek nature. And like many meek people, he’s found his voice in performance. (You hear this from a lot of performers.) The only problem is that the other actors in his show are sentient captives...
He was the creator of the game, why wouldn't he be a founder? He was just taken advantage by others because of his submissive personality. You have to admit, his co workers were assholes that walked all over him. We can't just expect him to have a personality where he will be fed up and stands up for himself. While he is a bit insane he isn't hurting anyone but cyber clones which I personality couldn't care less about. There are currently games out there where you can do worse to NPCs.

I don't think a "sane" person's first idea for revenge is to lock up a clone of the person you want revenge on then murder their 6 year old son in front of them by blasting them through the airlock.... sure you can have your own theories but nowhere did the show even imply that he was a sympathetic, or tragic villain, or that he was "mislead" anywhere. Let me say it again, normal people do not murder colleague's kids for revenge, even AI (very believable) children. I mean even if you do it in the Sims I would consider you weird, imagine doing it in shit like this.

@@tomo4977 I'm not defending him, I'm just not satisfied how the story was executed. I believe that it's quite normal for people to experiment in a controlled digital environment with the concepts of morality. I do think the level he took it to was a bit past sanity making them exact copies of their real life personalities (the method still seems absurd to me). You can play games where you can make people resemble those you know IRL and control them. There is even a fun little game on Nintendo 3DS where you shoot the faces of people you've taken pictures off as they attack you.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but did you say that Daley "died" once the game shut down? It was my impression that he was merely stuck in the game, unable to exit, and therefore starved to death over Christmas break, during which no one would check on him. Otherwise, excellent analysis! I got the impression that he died because part of him was deleted when the game universe was deleted, but after reading about it the starving to death thing makes more sense and is more fitting to the themes of the episode. Easy mistake to make,
Yes, I agree he probably starved to death which is even more messed up to me then him just dying. When he puts his door to do not disturb after the pizza guy leaves also lends to this theory, because even if someone did show up they would just think he wanted to be left alone and leave. Who knows how long it will take before anyone finds him.
I think it was more that at that moment he was DOOMED to die. But hey, you never know! It is Black Mirror after all.

While watching this episode I didn't dare to hope that the crew would get away since I was convinced that it would end horribly for them
A few long time fans of the show don't like the ending for that very reason. It's not like Black Mirror to give us a happy ending that wraps things up in a neat little bow, and of course people just don't like things that are different. Personally I was okay with it, though I'm not sure why Daly wasn't able to wake up from the game and I don't know if he needed to die. He was wasn't a nice guy but did he deserve to die?

Joseph Sherby it pretty much always been about that when it comes to bad people. Plus this is one of the less bittersweet stories so it would make more sense for him to just be exposed for what he’s done.

He thought he deserved better which is where I agree with you when in fact he needed to be stronger in order to really deserve some respect. The others werent really empathetic to him at all either and if that new employee chick treated him as nice as the others did from the start I doubt he'd create that game to begin with.
He doesn't bring everyone from the office, just these select few. I think that these are the people that in the real world he wants more validation/attention from and the only place he gets it is in the game.
Theres an ethics issue obviously. If it were actual NPCs that simply looked like his bullies (only his boss was an actual bully, and he gets his just desserts when he sacrifices himself to save the crew) then no harm done, but he could only be satisfied with his actions if they knew who he was and who they really were

He wouldn't starve to death within 10 days that easily. People in the real world have managed to survive through 30 days and more without any food. Our bodies are pretty amazing at keeping us alive.

Day 2-3 without water - Dry skin. Perform the "Turger Test" to test your dehydration level.
Day 3-4 without water - Death is a real concern. Finding water is your #1 instinct.
Day 4+ without water - This is it. Find water or die.
There is no way a human can make it 10 days without water. Food, yes, you can go up to 3 weeks without food, but water trumps food in a survival situation.

Well technically Robert daily isn't dead at the time of the events we see in the show, but since he is unable to move, being paralysed within the void of his now deleted game (and that it is Christmas eve so no one will be aware of his disappearance for the next week at least) its most likely he starved or died of dehydration.
You can actually see that he is still alive by the fact his motionless body is shedding tears, either way it is still quite a sad ending, a complete loner dying completely alone on Christmas day.
Plus consider this: I'm not a genius coder or game designer, but I'd have built in a failsafe that dumps the game players and automatically wakes you no matter what after a certain time period, say 36-48 hours, just to prevent such situations, if only solely for legal liability. Like a standard feature of the technology to keep stupid people from gaming themselves to death, as they would, and then having their families sue me.
The way I like to think is that if I thought of this off the cuff, then certainly a designer far more talented than me working on this system for years and years would undoubtedly have thought of it.

@@RobertMorgan (Extremely late) Daly thought of himself as a god in Infinity, so his ego would be fuelled to the max when discussing, thinking or playing his version. Since this was the case, and as it’s implied he’s gone through numerous employees(most likely 10-20) he probably forgot the extremely small chance something like this would happen. Also, it may have been more difficult with the mods he put onto the game, idk
He was so consumed by his sick fantasy that it only made sense his fantasy would consume him in real life.

My biggest problem with this episode was that Robert can turn people into monsters inside his mod of infinity just by thinking it, yet he cant just teleport back to his ship whenever he wants? And why would a software update create a wormhole in the actual game itself? And how would flying into it actually do anything?
Jank Well he has modded his abilities to a god-like status, but he isn't omnipotent. He still has to code these actions like the faceremoval and the monstermorphing, every thing extra has to be coded and I assume it takes at least a day of his time. Besides, I think he tried to make his game as close to his Tvshow as possible, all of his mods are just there to keep his actors in line - so hes still left with the Space Fleet Feleporters as the means of teleportation. I agree on the wormhole part, I thought it was a bit cheesy but I guess it fits kinda in the God/Afterlife theme of the episode.
Well yeah but if you remember when Cole first wakes up in the USS Callister, he teleports her back to the bridge when she's running around in the ship. So some kind of teleportation mechanic is already coded into the game.
Jank But he does it from his own ship which has a transportatiin platform and she didnt move as fast as they were in the end and more importantly: he doesnt do it himself, as he wouldnt know in the series, his technician beamed her up.

I loved this episode so much because it was such a good critique of the toxic nerd culture I dealt with so much growing up in historical re-enactment, fantasy, and d&d communities (I’m a girl). Seeing such a sadistic, toxic guy like Daley who would usually be sympathized with due to his nerdiness be portrayed as how obsessive he is was such a breath of fresh air

Jack K I do understand where you’re coming from with the whole Us vs Them mentality, but let’s not pretend we don’t have any sympathy towards them. Maybe they’ve been mistreated by friends, co workers, even family. Maybe they’ve been outcast’s and loners because of the way they act and their likes and dislikes, and their internal fear of acceptance and rejection gets to them. The world isn’t all black and white.
Jack K I used to be that way myself (apart from the whole toxic masculinity thing, because I was too scared of talking to women to begin with.) I was bullied most of my middle school and elementary school life. I got into my first fight just last year. I’ve seen first hand on why nerds are so scared of everyone, including women. They’re so scared of rejection that at some point, they fall into despair when they actually do get rejected, because that would mean they were right all along. And that to them, they truly are failiures.

If you thought that the ending of this episode was happy, think again. There will obviously be an investigation into Robert Daly's death, and Nanette was probably seen on camera sneaking into his house. They will probably find out that Nanette switched out Daly's disk with a dud, and might determine that the disk she replaced killed Daly. Nanette will likely be found guilty, and you know how the punishments in this society goes (white bear). But hey, her clone will be able to explore infinite procedurally generated worlds.
Bad comparison mate. The White Bear girl's punishment was to mirror her crime, how she kidnapped a little girl and filmed her getting tortured to death. Meanwhile, Nannette...did a B and E. And it isn't even what caused Cole's death.
Sure, and we can also say that after the ending of San Junipero, a power outage caused the servers maintaining the virtual world to disappear, and all the people in it died. But, like with this episode, there’s literally nothing in the episode’s ending to even hint at any of that stuff.

Slightly different take:
If we assume that Daly didn't know his creations were sentient, it's easy to see his action is a different light. He is a socially troubled man, who gets out his frustrations by unloading them onto AI in a game. Suddenly he's not a tyrant, how many of us would consider ourselves evil for the sake of the thousands of mindless AI we've slaughtered, or perhaps done even worse to in the name of getting an achievement, or just killing boredom. Even those of us who don't game might have had a moment of fantastically dreaming of horrible things happening to people we don't like, but Daly doesn't translate this into reality, he just takes it out on his computer. Not the MOST healthy option, but not inherently evil. And his punishment for playing his game and having fun at the expense of what he believes to be mindless AI is wildly out of proportion.
Furthermore, what if the characters aren't sentient at all. We assume they are for three reasons
1) They act completely human
2) They affect the real world
3) We see the show generally from their perspective, and sympathize with them
But none of these prove anything really.
1) They are designed from human DNA by a sophisticated program to act as human as possible
2) The game has access to things like text messages, so it is safe to assume it would be possible for it to send messages if that was the conclusion reached by it's programming
3) Obviously this gives us the sense that they are real, but tells us nothing for sure.
If we assume that they're not real, the nature of the episode changes completely. It becomes a story of unfortunately designed code, which kills it's creator for simply playing the game wrong, and the happy ending is suddenly not so good.
Red Tally I get where you’re coming from but AI currently in video games don’t think or feel as complexly as these characters do, their actions are a result of algorithms telling them what to do. The AI in the USS Callister are shown to be sentient: They are capable of having complex thoughts like humans, they have feelings (fear of Daley, sadness shown by Walton; he cries when seeing his son being thrown out of an airlock) and feel need for stimulation (they try to hump out of boredom). I personally believe any sentient being capable of having complex thought and feelings, whether artificial or non artificial should not be made to suffer by their creator. It’s essentially creating life just for the purpose of torturing it, in my opinion.
Walton talks about how he refused to play along for an extended period of time when Daly first uploaded him and mentions that it took a long time to "break" him (which finally happened when he brought the son on board. This alone means that Daly is aware that these AI are thinking and have a will of their own. Also remember Daly isn't some average player who moded the game HE designed it, and he designed the AI versions of his coworkers within the game so him not knowing they are sentient would honestly make sense. He could have just programmed bots that looked like his friends but he chose to collect their dna and replicate them as people, with personalities and thoughts instead.
It could have been a fun twist but definitely not what was going on in the episode.
that guy with no life Is it just a matter of complexity though? Sure they display emotions, but so might any character designed today. Do we have any reason to believe that these aren’t just better simulations. At what point does more complexity in the simulation mean feelings become genuine. It’s still just response to stimulus, which could be programmed into any computer eventually with sufficiently advanced technology and programming. Starting from The Sims, a sim will cry if it’s child dies, it will show fear if an alien shows up. So is it murder to lock them in the pool and watch them drown? Or is it gameplay? What about when Sims 5 comes out toting better AI? Sims 6? Sims 7? Is there a distinct cut off point when they Act so real that they Become real, just because of better coding? It’s all well and good to look at the extremes, like saying “Sims aren’t real because they don’t act human”, and then saying “The characters in Black Mirror are real because they act it”, but where is the line. We know they look real, we know they act real, and we know they figure out they’re in a simulation, but can you see the consciousness.

I’m not trying to say “I’m right” by the way. I sympathise with the heroes as much as anyone. But I think it misses the point of the episode to just say
Red Tally Humans are complex creatures. We are sentient, we are smart enough to acknowledge our existence and question it, have complex emotions such as love and sadness, and are capable of forming complex relationships with those around us. Ultimately those emotions are just a result of chemicals in our bodies and our actions are a result of our thoughts and emotions. Those chemicals in our bodies that we call emotions are comparable to an AI algorithms that dictate how a program/AI works. Their algorithm is what commands them to react to stimulus in a certain way, just like how we react in a certain way because of the chemicals in our head. When Walton sees his son being thrown out of the airlock he cries because his algorithm has commanded him to react to that situation in that way. We would do the same if we as humans were put in a similar situation, we would feel sadness because of the emotional bond we had with that person but then again it’s just chemicals in us creating that feeling of sadness. The only difference between us humans and the AI in the USS Callister is that the AI is artificial and can’t shit or have sex (physical differences), but the AI and us are both capable of complex thought, of having memories, of feeling attachments to other people (Walton and his son), of formulating plans. Idk if I explained my point well but basically what I’m trying to say here is we’re complex creatures and we have rights, if something like the AI in the USS Callister were created; sentient, complex, almost ‘human’ (some people would refer to them as that) AI capable of suffering they should have rights like us because they feel while it may be as a result of complex algorithms they still feel. Then again as you said characters in games show emotion, in GTA when I shoot a gun people run in fear so maybe I’m a monster if they are capable of thinking and feeling like us and I’ve been slaughtering them. Man I wish I could have this debate with you irl because I feel I could voice opinion better but I hope you got the general gist of what I’m saying.
that guy with no life But none of that answers the question of when does one become the other. Imagine you met someone who behaved exactly like a person, and appeared exactly like one. Years of friendship later you’re told they’re a complex AI robot, but the twist is, you’d already figured that out. Because the behaviour had been just slightly off. It passed the Turing test for a day or a week, but years later it doesn’t quite hold up. Just slightly less than perfect.
Was it sentient?
don't be too hasty about the ending. Yes, Daly's body may die of dehydration (10 days of holiday and then maybe five more before someone sends the police to knock down his door.) However, his consciousness is still caught in the game. Wasn't it established several times that no one dies in that game unless Daly orders them to die. Isn't it entirely possible he is trapped inside complete and empty darkness.....potentially forever? That's an even more disturbing ending.

I prefer it that way. This asshole of a manchild deserved it. Yeah, I emphasized with him in the beginning because he was being treated like shit. But a person who uses that as an excuse to act like a piece of shit themselves...that's where my sympathy disappears.

If all Black Mirror episodes are happening in the same universe then this technology could be the same they used for "San Junipero". They could've found Daly in his apartment and later use his device to make their own virtual reality. Taking people's DNA right before they died to copy them and go "permanent".
This is kind of what they actually do in the final episode.

This episode explains why it's so important for men to learn social skills and general charisma. Even if you are an introvert. Dude probably could've had that new chick irl if he would've just played it cool. She was already excited to meet him.
Problem is: He is some sort of sexist
- the women didn't bullied him: the woman on the entrance didn't smile enough (she smiled to nobody) and the other called him out for starring which is her right
- in the game: the women wear revealing clothes and have to kiss him + they don't get weapons + if they stand up and show strength he turns them into monsters
Daily has obviously a problem with strong women and enjoys it when they look up at him like Nanette in the Beginning but once they change their attitude they are doomed

There are no social skill degrees, no diplomas of being a master socialite, it just happens. Daly is one of the unfortunates who lack a sense you posses and don't even realize it - a social instinct. Just like a cook with no smell, recipes can eventually be memorized - but such a cook can only infer why the crunchy garlic on vanilla ice cream makes people recoil. Interaction with attractive women is just like learning to ride a bike. You may stumble and fall but the more you actually go outside and practice bike riding the more comfortable you become. Eventually you get to a point where you don't fear falling. And if you do fall you dust yourself off and resume bike riding. Socializing or at least learning how to act and maintain composure around attractive women is pretty much the same concept.

I loved some aspects of it, but some of the plot holes or weird extremely convenient elements made the writing seem kinda lazy (like the update black hole or DNA memory reader). Then again maybe that was an intentional use of a sci-fi trope.

Feel like I'm the only one that felt bad for Daley. He was ignored and treated like nothing by his co-workers when he's the reason they even have this job because he created the game. All he wanted was to be respected I'm not saying he was not a asshole and at times crazy but think about it you would do crazy shit if you were a god of your own world. And in the end he dies why because he wanted to feel important. I guess this episode shows you how power can go straight to your head.

this episode reminds me of the "bullied kid-school shooting" epidemic, sure enough people dont deserve to get bullied but is it then justified for people to retaliate in such a harsh way? i dont think so. and whats her name even told him he needed help...and i think he knew he needed help but he CHOSE to reject that option. people have a choice in how they handle things, should we have sympathy for people who choose to fight fire with...mass distruction? i dont think so.

For me this episode was about escapism and video games. Irl, Daly was an unsociable awkward person. Behind the scenes of Daly we saw that he was a godlike tyrannical dick. Instead of releasing his frustration out on the people in his life, he unleashes it on sentient copies of them in a video game. Because the real story (ironically) focuses on the fake copies, we are forced to see and feel for the oppressed copies. I actually found myself at the edge of my seat rooting for them to get to the black hole. A major sigh of relief came my way when they were able to make it to the black hole. Escaped and away from the harms and dangers of Daly. I was even left in wonder at their prospects: an infinite universe at their disposal (not like No Man’s Sky, but actually fun). But then seeing Daly’s dead body, real body, lying there made me reflect. Was someone who might be a dick in a fake world be deserving to die in the real one? I was left kind of depressed. And could it be a message that machine will eventually overcome man? That we will build our own destruction?
Overall, this was one of my favorites. It was actually funny at parts. And seeing Liam McPoyle just made my day.

Yeah, I have a major issue with the Real World Nanette subplot. Like, why the hell is she willing to risk not just her job but her legal freedom by breaking into her boss's apartment and stealing from him? Because somebody threatens to leak her naked pics? So what? She's not a celebrity, just a software engineer. The worst she'd get for it would be some awkward talk with her parents and even they would most likely be more afraid that someone was blackmailing their daughter rather than she got a bit naughty at one point. I simply refuse to believe a straight-up rather timid girl like her would go to such great lengths just to save herself a minor embarassment.
Moreover, her (well, their) plan doesn't even make much sense. Why doesn't she break in when he's still in the game? He'd probably be playing for at least an hour before needing to pause for a toilet break or something, would give her much more time to steal the DNA. She could use the pizza delivery guy trick later, just to swap the gizmos. Also, how does she know where the refrigerator is? The crew only assumed he held it in one but it might as well lie somewhere in his basement for all she knew.

I have mixed feelings with regards to his character. In real life he was treated like shit so it's no wonder he'd want revenge. He probably also justified it as being "just a game". Although the way he treated the AI clones was still abhorrent. The AI's were horrible people in real life and Daly was a worse person in simulated life.

DNA alone wouldn’t allow Daly to create clones with memories of their real-life experiences. Per rules of BM established in San Junipero, Black Museum, etc, the consciousness itself must be uploaded using a devices that looks just like the little bud Infinity players use. This suggests that Daly/Callister has been collecting copies of consciousnesses of all infinity players. Who knows how else they’re used?

Although i did like the episode I ended up not caring about the virtual characters that much. I didn't like the characters as much as the woman in white Christmas and IDK why. I still did feel for them a little but in my eyes Robert didn't deserve to die he just needed some therapy and to take charge and to grow up.
Dakota Spruell by "grow up" I meant mature; for the relationship he wanted with the new girl and also mature in the way of getting out of the overly awkward middle schooler lifestyle he seemed to still be inside (never voicing opinions and sticking up for oneself)
+Christian Buskirk The thing is Daley had clearly reached the point where he was never going to do that. Speaking as someone with pretty severe social anxiety, that in itself didn't seem to be the extent of Daley's problems. If it was, I would have felt sorry for him. But he had reached a point where he was, in a way, happy to be unhappy in his real life because he could vent his frustrations in Infinity - as long as he had that, he was fine with people treating him badly in the real world as long as he could collect their DNA. His immediate reaction when he overheard Nanette saying she wasn't sexually interested in him was to put her into his game and instantly torture her into submission.
And sure, revenge fantasies are a thing we all occasionally indulge in, but Daley went above and beyond the normal point - remember, HE designed Infinity, he put at least 7 people into the game and his reaction to Nanette implied he'd been through that entire process every single time he'd done it. Walton even says he refused to play along until Daley "broke" him by forcing him to watch his son get thrown out of an airlock (and remember Daley's in charge of whether or not any of them actually die, so for all we know, Walton's son is still part of the game during the episode). He knew they had at least some degree of sentience, and he went out of his way to torture them. "Taking charge and growing up" wouldn't be enough to fix that and he wouldn't have sought therapy because to him, Infinity WAS his therapy.

I think a huge part of this story is that Daly tortures his co workers in the game, but they will never know in real life so if he wants to be treated fairly he will have to conquer his social anxiety. I really liked this episode and I liked black museum a lot but arkangel and metalhead were just okay and crocodile was really good but not great. A lot of these episodes just didn’t feel like black mirror episodes and I felt some of them were directed poorly. Great analysis as always though!

Yeah my mind is still a little boggled at how the characters I got attached to were the video game characters that the real life people had no idea existed. They went on while I felt extremely bad and rooted for digital copies. Then the ending were they were free but now traveled thru a digital space of gamer fuck boys...the same kind of dudes that were just like Daly.
When I saw White Christmas, I was most intrigued by the plot with the sentient AI and disappointed that it wasn’t explored further. I kept imagining an episode where a sentient AI character attempts to escape. And then season 4 gave us *exactly* that. 🙌
The thing I didn't get about this episode. Daly is the CTO, the boss!! Who disrespects their boss on that level? Even the new girl came in and offered him immediate respect for not only his position, but his accomplishments in tech as well.

Todd Alquist origin story
A thing I noticed with this episode as well, the night the crew escape and trick Daly, is the night the company begin their holiday for Christmas. You know it because Ninette and Shaniah are talking about it in the real world, chatting about Christmas Eve and a 10 day break.
Meaning if there was any chance of saving Daly, they wouldn’t be able to because of the break. Where as if he didn’t come into work the next day or two, chances are people would phone the police or go on check on him themselves which WOULD leave a slimmer of hope for his survival.
But that obviously cannot happen because of the break. And as well as this because of the pizza guy, he put a do not disturb notice in his door.
A great little detail which I noticed and was so lightly touched upon.

I'd like to add some of my own analysis to this. Part of what this episode also touches on is entitlement and resentment and the ways this can manifest in people like Daly. I think its important to remember when watch that we are viewing the first third or so of the episode from his point of view. While at first glance Nanette's admiration of his intelligence and coding ability could be mistaken for a crush if you pay attention to what she actually says none of it actually translates to a crush so much as it translates to what she is expressing admiration and perhaps a bit of fangirling. Daly however needs this to be about her being into him and ignores what doesn't fit with his fantasy. Nannette critiques his Star Tr- I mean Space Force poster he still pulls her into his fantasy by saying that's what someone from the show would says. Ultimately her shattering said fantasy is what sets him off.
Similarly no one is actually as disrespectful towards Daly as his perspective frames it. Dudani asks if he's okay with the pushed back patch date, Nate is more than willing to get him coffee, and Valdack never intended for Daly to trip on his gym bag and immediately helped him up. Similarly Shania mentions Daly's issue with staring and we actually do see Daly doing exactly this to her when she first appears in reality, coupled with the fact that he rather obsessively watches Nanette. Elena does not smile enough, but something I think should be noted (on top of the fact that she does not owe him a smile) is that we see Daly not renewing his pass and forcing her to scan him in which is not actually part of her job. Its a situation that is repeated a second time in the episode showing that this is likely a pattern of behavior.
Daly's world is a power fantasy crafted on entitlement and resentment. Everyone is forced to adore and celebrate him and be denigrated and dehumanized by him. Nanette, Shania, and Elena represent a sort of almost pre-adolescent harem that he get to kiss them one after another. Its worth noting that if Daly wanted to simply make a power fantasy with npcs who resembled his coworkers he could have. Instead he made digital AIs with sentience, which speaks to a desire to dominate and impose his will on others. It would certainly be easier for him to program a Walton who had been subservient than to make a sentient copy of him and then break him by killing a sentient copy of his son. My point here is that Daly's simulation is as much about domination and dehumanization and objectification (to point of barbie-fying them) as it is about escapism. Its this need to dominate and torture that is ultimately his undoing as he cannot simply let them go (remember as far as he knows he can make replacements). He has to beat them, punish them, bend them to his will, and it ultimately kills him.

What the..? They weren't that disrespectful, and he actually had the nerve to make the babe at the entrance take 1/2 second to press a button for him. In fact she may have had to do it twice, clear pattern of behavior - and it took a full second of the babe's time if you count both times.On the other hand the babe could have been minimally courteous. Saying hi to someone and maybe chatting can sometimes take several seconds. So really, over the weeks and months she might have actually had to waste MINUTES with the guy - if she treated him the same way she probably treated everyone else. @@seandafny Except he created AIs with human intelligence and sentience, not a simple computer program designed to simulate reality. We see them talking with each other when he is not around, rebelling against him, even ultimately unintentionally killing him, which means that on some level they're not just programs. It ceases to be okay once their sentience and thus their right to not be tortured, non-consensually fondled and abused is included. And I do again want to note he had to go out of his way to do this (a simulation wouldn't require breaking them down via torture and other methods for example).

I find it interesting how the plot of the episode gives way to a deconstruction of the space western genre. It presents it in a setting of a clash between two different generations of series putting in the spotlight common tropes and cliches that once so characterized certain stereotypes through a more expository lens. It is noticeable in the way the episode starts as the cliche epilogue in an old TV show and the way it ends with a more futuristic yet absurd encounter as in an online game.

I highly missed this!!! Thank you so much for shinning a whole new light into this episode. It's still not my favorite of the season, but I've come to appreciate it more. And like other people have said, I tried other analysis videos on black Mirror and could only say "nope, nope nope nope nope..." Mr. Harry, you really know what you're doing, please do not stop!!!
PS: That question about how ethical it is to build A.I that can feel pain is quite difficult. I'd stop to ask first if creating A.I. on the first place is a good idea, and I would say NO, not in this time, we're not ready for it.

An interesting thing i noticed is that Daily (aka super chuck) isn't a loser in the real world because of his looks. You could easily switch the roles of Daily and Walton and it would work exactly the same. Moral: It doesn't matter what you look like. Your actions and how you present yourself to other people matter.

I found this episode to be pretty unsettling to be honest. We were made to feel sorry for Daley at the beginning of the episode because of the way he was treated by the "real" people in his life. We were then drawn into his fantasy world full of "digital" representations of these people where we soon lost sympathy for him because of the way he treated them.
Did these copies actually feel pain and have emotions, or were they just programmed to behave that way? Computer programs do not have feelings, if it were possible of course it would be unethical to make them that way.
I know that this is syfy but it kinda scares me that we can be manipulated into giving things sentience that do not have it, and feel good about punishing someone who clearly does because of what he did to a bunch of data.

I enjoyed this episode but the fact that Daly made digital clones/cookies out of his work colleagues containing their IRL memories, language, skills etc from their DNA alone is kind of a gaping plot hole and one I was kind of surprised to see in Black Mirror. Your DNA is just your raw biological blueprint. Identical twins have the exact same DNA and share the same phenotype in terms of physical appearance, intelligence, personality type, interests, etc, but they're still distinct people shaped by their interactions with the environment.
The simulated reality/cookie technology from San Junipero and White Christmas is a lot more plausible/conceptually possible.

A detail I love about this episode is that the villain is pretending to live up to Star Trek's ideals of a hero even though he's more evil than any of the shows villains. The crew on the other hand (who barely know each other) never turn on each other and even sacrifice for each other no matter how much they get punished for it just like the best heroes from Str Trek.

fallingthroughspaceandtime Its obviously a show and that was the intention of the creators to ask this question, the truth is that in reality is pointless asking because they are very high tec npc so they look similar to humans and even have the same memorys as the original but they arent the originals, in the game they actually confirm they wanted to die because their existence was pointless which was a big point to the episode itself die before being slaves (also they are ai so they dont have soul), thats why people dont like the ending so much because he is a human being that got rekt by his own creation ala skynet, so the science in the episode its impossible and contradicts itself, so at the end of the day dont think too hard on this.
Also in real life dna cant copy feelings, memorys, etc things that arent possible in real life so the science in the show fails and if you want an in dept analisis of this episode the argument is that the code trys to act like human but they are just code which unlike humans we are more than dna.
They are just code, it amazes me how much ppl agree with his death

I felt watching the episode that it almost made a hint of comment about how the online persona differentiates from the real life persona... like how much authority we have online compared to real life... like many people online say and do things which in real life they would never dream about doing like Daley.

This episode has obviously got a lot of influences from Harlan Ellison's short story: I have no mouth, and I must scream. In that, there's a few people stuck in a computer, suffering unimaginable torture, for eternity. Everyone should read it. It's a fantastic post apocalyptic story and its frightening!

I don't understand one thing in the end , since after going through the worm whole everyone returned to their previous forms so even if Walton was just ashes wouldn't those ashes return to their previous form as well? since he can't die so if the monster can turn back into the black girl why not the ashes/skeleton or whatever was left of him? And his son also. And the 'bad guy' and the girl who was turned into the monster weren't even on the ship but on some planet. How did they suddenly appear on the ship in the end and if they did why didn't the other girl (from accounting and also a monster) as they mentioned did not? Or his son who's floating in space unable to die. I must be missing something here.

Yes, that I understood. But whoever was on the ship escaped from the server and turned back into normal form. That's why I'm saying why didn't Walton also? He was on the ship down there by the engines or whatever. Or alternatively why was the 'villain' guy on the ship all of the sudden.

It's like digital art VS traditional art. Are they both real? one exists only in a computer (unless you make a print) but does that make it any less real than any other drawing or painting? Both of them take time and effort and a mastering of various tools or programs.

It doesn't matter, as humans we perceive them as sentient and it's on us to decide on how to treat them. (most) Humans empathize with animals and humanoid things, to go against that feeling of empathy is wrong. To say it's "just code" and to purposefully disrespect something that your brain is telling you is human is what begins to make it a moral gray area. All it does is reflect on you and your personality however cruel or kind you may be.
