"What if they try to switch" - They can't switch, the idea behind the episode is that this technology creates a new type of relationship.. it's not a relationship between two people. It's a relationship based on 4 variables, 2 people and 2 avatars, and if just one of those things is different it's not the same for them... That's why when Karl tried it with other people and other avatars it never did it for him.
Exactly, and even just from a sexual preference perspective: Karl is in love with Danny's mind inside Lance's body and Danny is in love with Karl's mind inside Roxette's body, which would make Karl at least somewhat bi, but Danny less so if at all. I doubt Danny would find the body of a male character arousing like Karl does.

I think this episode is the most interesting of the season, makes you question about sexuality and gender. Also touches masculinity and open relationships between a couple. And ofc has an awesome crossover between Black Manta, Falcon and Mantis.
Also want to clarify that just because they seem a little weirded out by the relationship between the two guys doesn't make them homophobic, stop bitching about it. You gotta remember that it's not just two random guys they both know each other for years and were best friend, probably like brothers. Ofc seeing two homies kissing is gonna be embarrassing for a lot of people, not because the gay theme but about being with someone who's like family.

It can be argued that one of them is bi (since one of them is attracted to the male avatar) but the other is clearly straight, since he is attracted to the female avatar and isn't into the real life kiss. This is the intriguing aspect of the episode: the fact that someone can fall in love with a specific mind and a specific body.

Tons of nuance in this episode a lot of people miss. My favorite is the color scheme through out it and what it signified, “yellow” is big and possibly is for passion? Theo cutting lemons, the yellow outfits in the second fight, the huge “game over” sign, etc. His best friend also wore a yellow sweater but masked it with a jacket at the dinner (him trying to hide his desire).

People were very hung up on the sexuality aspect (ie possible homosexuality or bisexuality) about this, but there’s also a definite gender aspect as well, like possibly Karl being trans or bigender/gender fluid. Such a great episode. GREAT REACTION!!!

Modern World being uncomfortable with something you have never seen before is different from straight up hating a group. This show always explores things that you normally don’t think about. It makes you questions what your even seeing. This is not a conventional gay storyline or friends to couple storyline. So it makes sense that they were taken off guard and as a group of friends they were probably imaging themselves in that situation and thinking about how it would effect their relationship.
@@jopenny4038 But you need to understand that being uncomfortable by this stems from being uncomfortable with homosexuality itself. It's 2020, people shouldn't be uncomfortable by that in this day and age. While this show does explore unconventional, thought-provoking themes that can surprise people, there's just no excuse for them to react in a way that they did, especially that one guy who was the loudest and most disgusted.

Anyone that has played a modern MMORPG with semi-realistic characters will know that cybersex and erotic roleplay are incredibly common and is very often happening between two guys. I'm glad that Black Mirror delved into this dichotomy. Even if there wasn't a virtual/visual element to it, it's certainly possible to also experience emotional connection based on writing and personality. It's why the romance novel genre is incredibly well selling. Women have known this for decades.

I don't think Theo would leave Danny for some adventurous one night fling. They're only doing this once a year. It just doesn't fit her character. She is the one truly invested in her family and at one point is lecturing Danny about what kind of sacrifices it takes to make this family relationship thing work. Actually, I would venture to guess that this compromise idea was something she came up with. I mean she's got the most control in the end. In my opinion, the only person that this compromise is kind of less of a win for is Karl. He spends his time waiting for one night out of every year; that really sucks. If anyone is going to fail in this compromise, my money is on Karl.
Considering that women have dealt with centuries of men who couldn't give them that kind of satisfaction they have the right to talk about how much better their satisfaction can be if you actually do your job properly as their partner

Anyways, I honestly wouldn't say the ending is clap worthy. I think it's actually pretty sad in a way. From the look on Theo's face she looked hurt, like it hurt her to think about him going into striking vipers to have sex with someone else. And in the long run Theo will fall out of love with him and leave him for another man. Their kiss just proves that point. It had no passion.
