Haunted Mansion is a 2023 American supernatural horror comedy film directed by Justin Simien from a screenplay by Katie Dippold. It stars LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jared Leto. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Rideback, it is the second theatrical film adaptation of Walt Disney's theme park attraction The Haunted Mansion, following the 2003 film of the same name. In the film, Gabbie (Dawson) and Travis (Chase W. Dillon) enlist the aid of a team (Stanfield, Haddish, Wilson, and DeVito) to help exorcise the ghosts around them.

The only thing I love about the haunted mansion is this: when I was in the theater to see Little Mermaid, and the trailer for Haunted Mansion came on, this one mother completely overreacted and covered her children's eyes. The theatre was silent for a moment, and then this little girl's voice goes, "Well, when I have kids, THEY can watch it!"
I died. 😂
Haha, I love this precocious little girl. In my opinion, this movie's not THAT scary.
"DISNEYCEMBER 2020 blog day 10 give us a fright with "Haunted mansion 2023" & to make a long story short I prefer the "Muppets Haunted Mansion" better if you excuse me I got some ghost that need to cross over."
😂
Funny lil story and brave for that lil one to say
We took my friend and his mom to see M Keaton Batman 2 in the theater…..his mom freaked out and acted like satan was on the screen for 2 hours 😝 was more fun than the movie
You want to know what's scarier than having your kids watch The Haunted Mansion? It's having your kids watch A Dogs Way Home in the theaters. I remember when the movie started, five or six kids were screaming and crying because the puppies were being ripped away from their mom in an extremely horrifying fashion. To top that off, there was this little girl sitting next to me that asked questions about the movie to her mom until the very end and she made a bunch of us laugh. All I remember is the girl crying "what about big kitten?" "Not big kitten!" "Why did big kitten leave?" When the movie was done, the mother had to apologize to us before they left.
Like I said, the only thing scarier than this film is a dogs film, apparently. Homeward Bound it is not.
Whatever its issues I'll give it credit, I never thought I'd see a Disney movie where one of the main objectives ends up being "Stop a depressed 10 year old from committing suicide."
Honestly yeah, that was pretty messed up
I love how all the comments are talking about how good this movie is, and this has been the harshest disneycember vid this year
It sure is. I actually thought this film was better than the Eddie Murphy film
@@tonythehappynerd7241In no way shape or form is this better than the Eddie film.
They must be bots.
I'm no bot. And I'm allowed to like whatever I want
I thought it was an ok movie to watch for free on Disney+ (especially since I watched it around Halloween time when decorating). I definitely don’t think I would’ve enjoyed it at all had I payed for a ticket and seen it in theaters though.
Also, this Disneycember is really showing Doug's true opinions on Disney's 100th anniversary. I wouldn't be surprised if Once Upon a Studio is the only Disney content he liked this year.
Disney has been so terrible this year
That's not true, he liked The Sixth Sense, Spectaucaler Spiderman, and The Rock...
and I'm just now realizing neither of those things were made by Disney.
@@elder-woodsilverstein7716You should've also realized none of those came out this year.
@@jlev1028 or came out this year, yeah. Thank you.
Pros: Incorporates more elements of The Haunted Mansion attraction into the film like the stretching room, the endless hallway and even including famous ghosts like The Hatbox Ghost and Constance Hatchaway. Great production design that captures the look of the Mansion and visual effects that really make the ghosts so creepy and the environment atmospheric, great performances from Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis and, as controversial a celebrity as he is, even Jared Leto, and a good message of letting go of grief.
Cons: Feels way too convoluted with Master Gracey’s and the Hatbox Ghost’s stories where it feels like two different stories are fighting for attention. While Master Gracey’s does connect with the main character’s arc of trying to find his deceased love interest, the Hatbox’s Ghost’s feels like the main ghost storyline they wanted to focus on. As awful as the 2003 Haunted Mansion is, at least it had ONE ghost backstory tied to the mansion and was straightforward and had the ghosts’ motives easier to understand.
Overall, a mixed bag. I do appreciate this putting in more effort to be a Haunted Mansion film than the last one, but I still prefer The Muppets as my go-to adaption of the attraction; and how odd is it that I’m saying the frigging Muppets version that was an original film made exclusively for Disney+ is the best adaptation.
I agree 100 percent with everything said here. I've also watched the Muppets version much more than the others.
That's how I felt watching this movie. It didn't do anything interesting or funny, but it didn't offend me either. I don't regret seeing it, but I don't want to see it again.
I agree with your pros. I do like that it sends a message to let go of grief. I also like that the ghosts embrace staying deceased spirits and staying in the mansion, which really keeps true to the spirit, no pun intended, of the ride.
The Muppets version made me hate this movie even more tbh. Like this should’ve been just a Disney Plus special and the muppets version should’ve been the big budget Haunted Mansion film.
I'd love to see an actual horror movie based on this attraction. Sadly, I don't think Disney will ever go full horror.
I mean, they essentially did with the attraction itself, considering the Ghost Host killed himself and even offers that has a solution to escape the mansion, plus the Bride implied to kill her past husbands. There's plenty of horror elements of the original ride rife for exploration, Disney just refuses to do it.
Yea, I know the story of the actual ride is pretty dark but they still toned it down over the years to make it less frightening for kids. @@RavenStarMedia
me too@@RavenStarMedia
Well, they did declaw and de-tooth the Simpsons.
You do realize that 20th Century makes full on horror movies right?
Hearing you mention how much you love the Haunted Mansion ride makes me think about how much I want you to add theme park rides to Disneycember. I know I’ve commented this on a lot of videos, but I just feel so strongly about it since they’re all such well-crafted works of storytelling art, just as much as movies, shows, or games, and on top of that they’re a huge part of the Disney brand identity. The Haunted Mansion would be a great one to kick off the month with, too, cause there’s a ton to talk about with it!
I remember seeing this in theaters, when the “twist” with Owen Wilson was revealed (if you can even call it that, it was way too predictable), I literally almost yelled out “NO SHIT!” In my theater 😆
Fun fact: This movie was orginally going to be directed by Guillermo Del Torro, then he had to leave, then it was going to be done by the female ghostbusters people, and now it's done by someone who has done basically nothing. This movie was in production for close to 9 or 10 years.
You couldn't research Paul Feig's name?
@@adolfopena7358no
Well, that certainly is interesting. The people that ruined Ghostbusters we’re in line to wreck this movie. Not that the one we got was good to begin with. But thank God Paul Feig didn’t have nothing to do with this movie.
It's still weird how the only Disney park adaptation to really "work" remains Pirates of the Caribbean. And even then it only paid lip service to specific ride moments while inventing the other 95% of story from the ground up. At least 30% of that being Captain Jack Sparrow's... everything really.
There's also a Tower of Terror movie that's actually really good too.
Doug also talk about it in Disneycember
💯💯. Johnny’s Depp just knows how to do it
The first Pirates script was originally meant for a Monkey Island movie that never went anywhere
Mission to Mars was pretty good.
@@SomeOne-ym4xggod that would of been awesome
This might not be my favorite Disney movie this year, what I do like about it is that it incorporated more elements from the ride than the last film and even played with them a bit here.
This should have been released in Autumn around Halloween time instead of summer!
Iger keeps having the streaming service in mind
I was thinking the same too
Amen brother
For real! All good….I’m about to go see the Color Purple for Christmas and then Aquaman 2 for new years 😐
Yay
the part where he looks at the painting and it moves is the best reaction. simple "nope. nuh uh"
I personally liked when the mom nopes the hell out of the house when she sees the armor moving.
I’m a huge Haunted Mansion fan, and literally the one part that I got excited about was the lore about the Hatbox ghost and the fact that his house is the Haunted Mansion design that’s in Florida.
I enjoyed it quite a lot. The kid actor did well and I liked the adults too. As a Disney Parks nerd I enjoyed the little Easter eggs and I had fun with it. That being said, Haunted Mansion is still the best Mansion movie
The video game still has the best plot for a Haunted Mansion movie because it's basically about a struggling writer post-Civil War fighting an army of evil spirits and creatures in the mansion while guided by 6 friendly ones and Madam Leota.
Why wasn't THAT the plot for either movie!?! That would've been awesome!!!
I really wish we could get a Haunted Mansion movie that takes a cue from Beetlejuice. It essentially just laid the blueprint for how to make a really solid Mansion flick.
Ngl, I’d definitely watch a Haunted Mansion film adaptation that’s takes cues from Beetlejuice and has a family moving in and the ghosts trying to scare them off and failing and having to learn to cope with living with this family.
💯💯💯
I actually thought this movie was pretty good and I was surprised to like it more better than Eddie Murphys version, even though that one is still a childhood favorite.
I liked the way they handled grief and losing a loved one in this movie, and them adding the song at the end was perfect
I think this movie would've done better if it actually released in theaters during the halloween season. This movie had some good ideas and I like when the mansion is haunted with the ghosts. but with a bit or rewriting and being released when wanting to see something spooky and fun are on people's minds more, it would've done better.
I did like this movie better then the Eddie Murphy one
They don't even have the regular Haunted Mansion at the parks in October
Honestly, the best adaptation of "The Haunted Mansion" has probably been the old Gamecube/PS2/Xbox adventure/puzzle game from 2003. That game mostly just used the setting as an excuse to create really interesting levels and was actually super good.
I play that game every October. Doug should review it for Disneycember one year.
That game also has my favorite version of Madame Leota.
Atticus Thorn, my man. An underrated villain that should be in the next Kingdom Hearts game next to Zeke.
Well it is better than the Eddie Murphy version. But it also makes me wish that we had a Guillermo Del Toro Haunted Mansion movie.
True.
Poor Del Toro can never seem to catch a break.

Honestly i really want a haunted mansion movie based on the original phantom manor plotline. I'd feel like it'd be really neat to see how everything went down and i'd feel like it would be a cool movie
I’d love to see that! Especially as that storyline could honestly make for a very dark and twisted story. The father’s refusal to allow his daughter to marry and secretly murdering all of her suitors, the epic earthquake that swallows the entire town, the slow descent of Melody’s mind as her father’s spirit continues to torment her for years upon years. Like that’s some heavy stuff that could make one hell of a scary and sad film!
@@alexb7065 exactly. There's so much potential for a great film with a story like that. The father would serve as a wonderful villain for the movie especially with that haunting laugh of his.
@@EverslumberingMaya To me what the haunted mansion needs is to not be set in the present day. Both films have basically been a modern setting of someone discovering the house and the ghosts. I’d be much more interested to see HOW the house was haunted and actually witness the tragic stories that lead to the spirits. SEE the hauntings grow over time, draining the house of its elegance and turning it into the scary nightmare it ends up as.
You should see the Fanscription episode they did on the Haunted Mansion, they actually used the Phantom's story line for it
I do believe that is in the works
Wish you could do a nostalgiaween about this movie, as you can compare this to the Eddie Murphy one.

I really enjoyed the movie, but for some reason I kept thinking there was going to be a Sixth Sense-like twist with Ben Matthias where he was a ghost at that point, but didn't know he was and near the end of the movie they were going to reveal that he was. It still was a good movie, a lot better than most of these kinds of movies lately.

He didn’t really touch on this, but I really liked how they incorporated New Orleans in this. The music, the French Quarter, the ghost tours and the funeral parades. Yeah it wasn’t a huge part of the movie, but they could’ve left that detail out, (of Walt’s original vision of a dilapidated mansion in Louisiana) like the Eddie Murphy movie did. The haunted mansion has been one of my hyper fixations for years, and I was so excited for this movie. It was... Uhm... Yeah, pretty disappointing. There were a lot of cool things, like the captain ghost and some of the effects, but the script itself was just so dull.
I definitely agree that to make a successful haunted mansion movie/show, they would need to focus on the ghosts themselves, rather than painfully boring humans.
In my opinion, the best haunted mansion media was the book series. Funny, scary, and entertaining as heck.
He could’ve said “then I’m sorry, this grim grinning ghost does not want to socialize.”
Though I really enjoyed this movie, I'd LOVE to see a Disney+ series that focuses on what Doug mentions at 5:50 focusing on the actual residents of the Mansion and how they kicked the bucket / how they ended up trapped there. I can already see an episode about the life and death of Madame Leota alone, there's so much potential for the other characters in other episodes!

The Tower of Terror is a TV movie from the 90s starring Kirsten Dunst. Full movie can be found on RUclips.
@@RoseBaggins The Tokyo DisneySea version of the ride has a completely different plot than the original. It's about a hotel tycoon and artifact collecter that gets a cursed idol that results in his death. It's disappointing that you don't like Disney this year because it's supposed to celebrate its 100th Anniversary and now it's not doing so well that too bad
So Disney is doing live action remakes of their live action movies now? Does this company have no shame?
It’s not a remake. It’s a new adaptation of the ride. It has nothing in common with the Eddie Murphy movie other than the ride being adapted.
It would never happen but I would love if Doug did a Disneycember talking about the actual Disney Parks rides.
I definitely wanted to hear your opinion on this, because I feel everyone including Disney forgot the Eddie Murphy one existed. Are they in the same universe? The characters related connected, or is Disney trying to just write the Eddie Murphy one out of existence? Cause it's not like Pirates of the Caribbean where they've had sequel after sequel, and after Jungle Cruise got a movie, them doing this despite a Haunted Mansion movie already existing (forgot the Muppet one too lol) just weird and makes you wonder.
