Well, if worse comes to worse, you can try and make films with no dialogue at all. At least you'll be acknowledged for trying something new, even if it flops. Make sure you don't do anything stupid, like, I don't know, take an extremely lively dancer like Michael Jackson and give him a role where he's pinned to a pole. And don't do ANYTHING like "Tiiiiinaaa, TIIIIINAAA, TIIIINAAA!"
I grew up watching this movie and I loved it (mostly because of the music). I agree with a lot of your criticism, but I think the music makes it worth watching. (Also, the subway scene was terrifying and better than the tree scene. It’s basically the same thing anyway, living trees/living pillars. The environment comes to life and attacks them, nuff said.)
Indeed. This suffered from its low budget (unless the look was intentional) and the original suffered from slow pacing and the low-quality effects of the era. Both deserve a remake to make them truly as awesome and epic as they deserve.
I always thought it fit with his characterization as a relic of earlier times "Feet, don't fail me now!" and "Fall in line, or get left behind!" He's the last of his kind
I actually have a lot of trouble with the portrayal of Dorothy in this version of the tale. Now, I know they had to have some things work a bit differently, but in the original she was at least decently brave, for starters. Why make a dorothy who is pathologically afraid at all the time? It just feels weird to me that they went that way with it.
I'm thinking that with the revamping of everything, they decided to give the character some growth. She starts out as an introvert and through the journey starts to come out of her shell and stand up for herself.
Especially for the time period, having Dorothy being brave and essentially the leader of her merry band was pretty amazing. She’s innocent, sure, but adventurous and plucky and didn’t really need someone to save her even when she was clearly frightened. She was a well-rounded and well-written character on an adventure and for a female character that’s a pretty nice thing to see.
@Adrijana Radosevic , true, it does make it an unnecessary and repetitive story arc. Thinking about it, they gave that same arc to the Wiz himself, lol, only he didn't grow.
+Max Kehm But maybe it would be better to not think about it as a revamp of the original wizard of oz movie but a completely new retelling that bowrrows some of the darker elements from the book series to inform the tone.
I think this film transferred from Kansas to New York because: 1) Director Sidney Lumet was from New York City. He wanted HIS vision. 2) Diana Ross also resided there at the time, forcing babydaddy and executive producer Berry Gordy to throw her this bone. 3) Why not take advantage of the big budget coming from Motown Records and Universal Studios?
The wiz is life. There's always that one movie that you know every line. For me it's the wiz. The wizard of oz is ok too. But there is something about the wiz that takes you back to the world of nostalgia.
@@Editslovejazzy I'm so happy to see your comment because the way everyone else trashed this movie disappointed me. I love this movie. It's such a classic.
Schumacher is 1 of the most unfairly treated directors in Hollywood, he’s made good stuff but a lot of people just choose to stick their heads in the sand and ignore them because they only focus on his Batman movies
After watching The Wiz Live last December, this review is definitely validated, but Michael has to be given some credit. He fucking tried in this movie.
Michael killed this movie. He was a beast at 19 years old. Who in the comments or wat reviewer could ever do wat he did at 19 ? I ain't got time to wait ....NOBODY .
I remember renting this from Blockbuster when I was in middle school because our school was doing the play and I was in it. I was excited to see a good, professional version and was absolutely baffled when I didn't recognize anything that was going on in the movie. It kinda sucks because the play itself is pretty good.
That sometimes happens. Like the suggestion by the other commenter, reading the script is best because it allows you to use your own imagination rather than go by preexisting imagery, when reading the text. An important skill to develop as an actor. Furthermore, it allows you to get the main idea and concept at the source(the heart and spine of the work) which will assist you as it helps you navigate the rest of the production.
He got the top song that plays throughout the film and in the end credits, Ease On Down The Road, in addition to The Crow Anthem. So, I'm happy for that, especially knowing that he was not yet the Thriller star that he became in the 80's. Having the main, reoccurring, and end credit song, being a rising star is pretty awesome!
The NBC version does a much better job of moving the story along (plus speeding up the music to keep it interesting). I really loved the wicked witch's voice though.
The Wiz was good. Great songs. It was weird but I love it. It's a different setting and different ideas. Just because you can't relate to the social commentary doesn't mean it's not valid.
Paper Mario Also doesn’t mean it isn’t forced. Again, why would the taxis not pick her up if everyone in the world (including the taxi drivers) were black as well. They serve no function to the story except to force in unneeded social commentary.
They changed the fact that dorothy is a little girl from a Kansas farm because Diana Ross was too old to pull that concept off. So they made her a kindergarten teacher from Harlem to make it more believable. But it was still a huge fail.
The stage play is much better than the film and in the play she's a kid from Kansas. The play was based off the book not the 1939 movie notice how the Wiz pulled almost everything from the book.
Paw hasn't done a Music Movies in more than a year due to moving to California and Blip's closure. He's thinking of transitioning it into a podcast. I hope a The Wall review comes to fruition at some point
One of the most popular songs from the show, a fun, jazzy classic, and what should we do with it? Film the backs of the actors from far away. BRILLIANT ADAPTING
"The Wiz! Live" a few years back exists to prove how much a disservice this movie did to its Broadway original. In that one, Dorothy is a flawed but active badass and the songs sound GREAT. The film version is just plain criminal.
If you turn 2 negatives into a positive then she’s singing for someone to bring her good news, which makes sense I suppose, that would be the opposite of bad news
This is still my favorite movie ever. And as a child I literally felt like I was in this world with them, the acting and singing was soooo good. Your review was hilarious though seeing it from an adult perspective. But F that it's still a classic. I wanna see the whole movie now and sing every song word for word.
Well, that IS the number that best describes a recognizable character from either the books or the classic movie. Either that or "You Can't Win", with Michael Jackson straining to just get DOWN off that pole and join the choreographed dance number
"I don't wanna be racist, but..." -me trying to watch this movie. Well, the songs were good... for the most part, but I just can't get passed the bad use of Michael Jackson and the shit cinematography. Well, at least this movie made me want to watch the play.
You're not being racist it's fine to have an a opinion even if the movie all black it won't make ya racist for thinking this adaptation of the wiz isn't good.
Solid Sloth Well, it is not only Tumblr who should take the blame. This new thing of "everything is offensive" comes from the natural need people have to form groups and segregate themselves. "We are fighting for a better world where everyone can live together by building a wall in order to segregate what we consider to be the oppressors " that is a very backwards way of thinking.
The Emerald City scene was a commentary on Black Beauty and excellence in a time when it was rarely shown. Was it necessary? No But did it make Black people feel beautiful at a time when we weren’t seen as beautiful or graceful or elegant? Yes. And does that alone make this movie worth it? Hell yes!

One thing you didn’t mention in your someone biased comparison is that the music in this movie is simply memorable. When I saw this what always stood in my mind is the music. It was definitely represent of Motown. Now one thing I will give you. This shit was scary as fuck when I saw it as a kid. But I loved the music
Changing Dorothy to an adult could've been a good choice. It could re-contextualize the story and allow it to say something different. But they didn't really do that here.
Yeah, they tried to have it both ways. Sort of like how Schumacker tried to do Robin as a teenager.....but cast an adult in the film. Like, No....Go one or the other, don't try for both. Either have her be a teen that acts like a teen, or an adult that acts like an adult.
Eh, I liked this movie. The songs fit for the time. The stage fit FOR THE TIME. Hell, you even said it yourself that Michael Jackson wasn't even the huge popstar he was later on in life. I appreciate the humor of the review on this one, but a lot of the details were nitpicky. But hey, my opinion, your opinion. The Wiz is one of my favorite movies.
Very nitpicky and based in insensitive racial lack of understanding definitely. He don't know that ummmm that's all we were given was ghettos. That's why OZ looks like one duh . It's all the black people at the time was used to and could relate too. It did not look strange to us as kids Because the landscape was a bit more relatable than a farm setting. So they knew wat they were doing . This film was for the people of the time so that's why it's very dated but still a time capsule of a gem 💎
What scares me is that Michael kept trying to resurrect parts of this movie in his later short films: Bad, Captain EO, Moonwalker, sewer exits in both Thriller and Beat It, the hecklers in The Way You Make Me Feel. He couldn't escape this film because he had an affair with Diana Ross during its filming and he never got over her.
The oz scene represents the New York fashion scene. And how it always comes back around..i feel you fought against the location from the start instead of embracing it. But the fight came from a place of knowing the original not looking at this in fact the death of the witch death hate is from not embracing the locations.
I might be wrong after just getting into this movie but the movie is supposed to be a message about the great migration and the struggles they had to go through. Hence the crows being the viewed as the Jim Crow laws telling Michael that he can’t get out of the game no matter what he does

@@rebekahking6276 That makes me so happy! ^^
Indeed. This suffered from its low budget (unless the look was intentional) and the original suffered from slow pacing and the low-quality effects of the era. Both deserve a remake to make them truly as awesome and epic as they deserve.

Honestly. What Would I Do If I Could Feel was my favorite part of this whole movie, Nipsey may not have an amazing voice, but he did the song great.

"Feet, don't fail me now!" and "Fall in line, or get left behind!"

Grow some QUESTICLES!
I'm thinking that with the revamping of everything, they decided to give the character some growth. She starts out as an introvert and through the journey starts to come out of her shell and stand up for herself.
@@garysmith3037 That is a good idea, and if they had portrayed it in this movie, it might've been a little bit better.
"Amazingly fake"? That one scene during this statement was filmed on location at the plaza of the World Trade Center towers...

Me too
you can love it for what it is. but it is not a good adaption of the original
I do, too.
+Max Kehm But maybe it would be better to not think about it as a revamp of the original wizard of oz movie but a completely new retelling that bowrrows some of the darker elements from the book series to inform the tone.
I think this film transferred from Kansas to New York because:
1) Director Sidney Lumet was from New York City. He wanted HIS vision.
2) Diana Ross also resided there at the time, forcing babydaddy and executive producer Berry Gordy to throw her this bone.
3) Why not take advantage of the big budget coming from Motown Records and Universal Studios?
Yeah. They didn’t really research.

I remember renting this from Blockbuster when I was in middle school because our school was doing the play and I was in it. I was excited to see a good, professional version and was absolutely baffled when I didn't recognize anything that was going on in the movie. It kinda sucks because the play itself is pretty good.
My advice if you going to do play don't watch the movie.
Get the script
It's better than the original
That sometimes happens. Like the suggestion by the other commenter, reading the script is best because it allows you to use your own imagination rather than go by preexisting imagery, when reading the text. An important skill to develop as an actor. Furthermore, it allows you to get the main idea and concept at the source(the heart and spine of the work) which will assist you as it helps you navigate the rest of the production.
Why did Critic and Todd constantly blame Schumacher for all the movie's problem? He only did the screenplay.
Micheal Jackson only got one fucking song.
@@toyadiinae9800 Also, nowadays gives more meaning to The Crow Anthem, a person with great talent but with no oportunities, jackson couldn't win
The NBC version does a much better job of moving the story along (plus speeding up the music to keep it interesting). I really loved the wicked witch's voice though.
It's pretty much the same pacing, only the broadway version and the NBC version just borrowed largely from the book.

Paper Mario thanks you Mario
That was like, one line in passing. Not even close to an actual major problem
The sets are colorless and so ugly! Oz is a land of bright colors and imagination, not a lifeless wasteland.
Paper Mario Also doesn’t mean it isn’t forced. Again, why would the taxis not pick her up if everyone in the world (including the taxi drivers) were black as well. They serve no function to the story except to force in unneeded social commentary.
Watch the play.

They changed the fact that dorothy is a little girl from a Kansas farm because Diana Ross was too old to pull that concept off. So they made her a kindergarten teacher from Harlem to make it more believable. But it was still a huge fail.

Well, it is not only Tumblr who should take the blame. This new thing of "everything is offensive" comes from the natural need people have to form groups and segregate themselves. "We are fighting for a better world where everyone can live together by building a wall in order to segregate what we consider to be the oppressors " that is a very backwards way of thinking.
Why does Diana Ross constantly look like she’s about to cry?
That’s pretty much her character in this film.
The Emerald City scene was a commentary on Black Beauty and excellence in a time when it was rarely shown.

A book came before the musical, but people seem to forget it existed.
sadly seems to be a common theme whenever a successful movie or play is made out of a good book

They originally wanted the younger Stephanie Mills to play Dorothy, but Diana Ross went over Barry Gordy’s head and got the part.
Here's what gets me.. Dumbo has been canceled because of the crows.. yet the crows here are waaaayy worse.. double standard
0:49 That one didn't age quite so well...
