The main thing is that the crew is okay. A loco can be replaced, human lives can't, so praise God they made it out alright. As for 8099, I'm sure she'll be back on the road eventually. As long as the frame isn't bent, they'll get her back up and running, even though it will take a while.

They rerailed the 8099 yesterday afternoon. I saw a picture of it afterwards and the worst damage it has is the front part (from hitting the rocks probably), the conductor side handrails are bent in, and the conductor side has some bad scratches. It’ll be back on the rails at some point, the big question is how long will it sit in Altoona waiting to repairs. The most important part is that there were no injuries.

I was pretty torn up about the southern heritage unit being derailed. (it's really the only one of the ns heritage units I've seen). but with what happened towards the end of 2021 I think the tornadoes in Kentucky was much worse than this. (it was almost Christmas and I feel like the folks out there didn't get to have much of a Christmas). now I still really like the ns heritage units a lot (though I really wish they would give them all a new paint job cause they're not the same as they were 10 years ago). even I found out the cn grand trunk heritage unit was involved in a sideswipe accident with a boxcar in green bay wisconsin at the end of April. (though the damage on the gt heritage unit isn't as bad as the southern heritage unit as it just needs the handrails fixed and a few touch ups here and there). so I hope the grand trunk heritage unit will return soon as I really like the cn heritage units. just need to wait for that soon.

Here's hoping she doesn't get repainted into the standard NS paint when she gets put back together. Glad to hear the crew walked away.

That photo was plastered on the local news. The area is probably not accessible to rail fans without trespassing. The hillside above it a probably a couple hundred feet almost straight up with rt 837 below the tracks. As well as another couple sets of tracks below that and the Monongahela river. As of today, there is still equipment up there from the cleanup, but rail traffic is moving through

Those images were not hard to look at it all. We all live to see wreckage and other disasters. Very interesting stuff.

I can't imagine Not getting hurt rolling a train. There's nothing soft and cushy in that cab sept the seat cushion. An interview with an crew who's been in a roll would be interesting.
