It isn't often that a railfan event comes along that is honestly and truly impressive. This was one of those events. With a few hundred rail buffs convening in Spencer, North Carolina to see all 20 heritage units in one, the event was a very unique experience, and one that many will not forget. So sit back, find you favorite locomotive from the list above, and enjoy seeing the "Norfolk Southern Heritage Unit Family Portrait!"
I should preface this video by saying that we ended up here quite by accident. Months earlier, we had planned a trip to Roanoke, VA to enjoy the area and possibly see some of the newly painted heritage units. I found out later, that wouldn't be possible, because they would all be centered in one place (not Roanoke). Figuring we would see them eventually, the family and I still went on a trip to Roanoke. It was not until we were there that I realized how close to Spencer we actually were. So we decided to hop in the car in the early morning and drive down to the North Carolina Transportation Museum.
We arrived at about noon, when all of the locomotives had been removed from the roundhouse (except for 3 of the Southern Family units, for reasons unbeknownst to me). Due to a shortage of crews, they chose to abandon the given schedule, and bring each of the locomotives in one by one, which in my opinion was very cool. All in all, it took about 3 hours, and the whole thing was truly an impressive sight. (And believe me, editing 3 hours of footage to exactly a half hour is not by any means an easy task!) Enjoy!
Wow all of them are awesome but 1066 NYC is my favourite just a gorgeous locomotive.
WOW .... DOUBLE WOW ...... NOOOO .... TRIPLE WOW .... This is the first time I ever saw this ... and DAMN ! ! ! ! ! .. I'm 68 years old and have loved trains all my life! Even now, I live only 2 blocks from the NS main lines, and watch 'em every day while i'm walkin round the yard! Looking at these beautiful Heritage Units brings back many, many, many memories ...... I watched many of these road names pass by over the years !!!! i'm thrilled to have found this video! Thank you so much for sharing it with the world!
There's my NYC AND Conrail. My father was a Yard Master in Rochester, NY. He loved the NYC System.
I’ve never seen one of these but which ever one I see first will be my favorite
I like that every loco got its moment in the "spotlight" with a full rotation on the turntable
Grew up with the Wabash running past my house when i was a kid in St. Louis. Beautiful colors on their locos, they will always be my favorite.
I was at the Transportation museum just last month, no heritage units were there, but the 611 was and she was getting a face lift and didn't look like her usual pretty self. The Southern RR 200,000th PS 50' boxcar was looking great after her paint job. The original blue/yellow/green wave pattern looked awesome, can't wait to see it finished.
I'm overwhelmingly awestruck; love em all especially the Penn Central. Grew up.watching them. Love live the Penn Central!!!!!
Too bad they don't look this shiny anymore! Nice video
Very awesome that NS honors their fallen flags. If only my favorite road (CSX) would truly honor theirs. How cool would it be to see a chessie riding the rails again!👍😃
8099 is the first NS Heritage locomotive I've seen in person. Boy do I sure miss her. I wish she would make another appearance back here in Minnesota.
+bkriegel95: they should come here more often then never. I did see UP 1995 last week in St. Paul though! My first heritage unit
I was there on July 3rd. It was very hot. But I had a great time.
Thanks Adam! That's what I was going for, glad you liked it!
Great job Kevin! I didn't realize you were fortunate enough to have gone down there. Nice camera work and nice editing!
Brings a tear to the eye. Beautiful machines.
Nice video and the Reading Lines heritage unit sure did look nice!
I like the CNJ too but PC?? I think you're alone on that one! haha Glad you like the video!
18:50 YES! Beautiful, Stunning, Amazing!
Awesome! The CNJ and PC units are my favs!
All Sharp units love the paint jobs great work.
Nice video! 7:52 My god pulled in!!
I like those heritage locomotives of Norfolk southern.
Wow, what a fashion show! They're all so beautifully cared for. Love that Wabash! That NYC unit is drop dead gorgeous!
I love trains so much
To add, you see em now compared to how immaculate they are on here, you just get angry and get misty eyed. Missing paint, sludgy, sooty, lack of its original lustre; they all need to get washed and repainted to give them back their dignity and sense of pride. 8 years? It's now time to do just that NS, don't you think? That's why we as railfans spend hours and time chasing them. They deserve and demand our respect
Thanks! I agree, NS did a stellar job on all 20 engines
NYC unit is definitely my favorite, along w/ Reading & IT.
I didn't even know about this I missed an opportunity to see some neat stuff
Wow! that is a fine set of locomotives!. I am into British locomotives and only just started getting into US locomotives. All of them are great!. The first US locomotive I have is a Norfolk Southern diesel electric.
Nice video! That ERIE unit is my favorite.
Awesome video. All the engines color schemes look great. I have on my train layout GP-7 NY Central with the lightning color scheme and a Norfolk Southern with there color scheme. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from New Jersey
I wish bnsf would have heritage locomotives like these
I wish CSX would do what NF Southern has done bringing back the old heritage flags. Would be great to see the old Chessie System, B&O, C&O, L&N, WM, and Seaboard System flags on line again, but sadly i doubt CSX is interested in doing this.
I give major props to Notfolk Southern for the gesture.
Norfolk Southern is a Very classy railroad.
CSX are now having heritage units
Great videos great New York Central and Pennsylvania and Lackawanna!!!
All of those rigs are so awesome looking and I love them all and even caught some through my area as they were pulling into the rail yard and heading out of there. Awesome video as always and I am a fan for life, guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have some of these heritage units in N Scale such as the Penn Central #1073, Central of Georgia #8101 and the Savannah & Atlanta #1065 and I want to collect all the NS Heritage Units soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Lackawanna unit is pretty just like EL in latter days, big EMD power.....
The wrath of Conrail
Fantastic Video! I must say, there isn't one that stands out the most to me or is my favorite because they are all amazing. Hope you enjoyed the event despite the heat!
Kudos to NS for the heritage units.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks! I like the RDG also. The shades of yellow and green they used on it look real sharp.
Like all those NS heritage units it's epic I'm a big fan of NS locomotives
Thanks! The keyword there is fortunate, I'm so happy I got to go. I didn't even know that I was until the day before (as I explained in the description.) I'm sure glad I got to be there for this
I like this american trains . greetz from belgium
This is beautiful. Thanks so much
Absolutely brilliant video, it’s only recently that I discovered that NS had repainted so many locomotives; we have a few special liveried locomotives here in the UK but nothing on this scale! Just like playing trains, but on a grand scale 👍🏻🚂😁
Everytime I see videos and pics of these locos I'm always breathtaken at how incredibly awesome they look, NS really did them proud! Frustrating though as I have yet to actually see any in person, not to mention the line nearest where I live is the old B&O Metropolitan Branch, CSX needs to seriously get with the program.
I live in central Washington state I was fortunate to see the southern, pen central and central of Georgia. still have have 17 to go yet(:
Nice Video I really enjoy it . Makes me wish NS Bought the IC Back in 2001 when CN Did & then maybe we would still see the IC & GM&O As heritage units .
Its been awhile since ive seen a IC Paint scheme on a CN Line here in my neck of the woods . Makes me wonder if they are slowly being repainted .
A few of the old Illinois Central units are emblazoned with the PAL Paducah & Louisville logo.
Living on the west coast (and born in the 70s) I never knew most of these roads, but these heritage units show a great love and accurate detail for NS's ancestry. But did I miss something -- the 3 which ended up between the Conrail and the Savannah & Atlanta never went on the turntable and I can't ID them by their schemes.
Thanks! I think I'd have to say that one is my favorite as well
23:25. There she is!
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
21st Century Limited the savanna and Atlanta unit once hit a semi
Beautiful
Fantastic job!
Wow there is a lot of comments with “this is my baby” but any ways 28:23 they are my family.
Thanks John!
Great video. Thanks for your effort.
Thank you very much!
All beautiful trains, especially since I live in Pennsylvania, but I wish they would do a Delaware & Hudson!
I saw the Erie Heritage locomotive in a train going down San Timoteo Canyon.
Great video. Just like being there 👍
If CSX were to do this they could easily do 20+ HU's. One can dream. I've noticed all these years later that the SD70ACe's look a lot more worn down than the ES44AC's. I guess maybe a difference in paint
Awesome Video This Put me in a Good Mood For The Day!
Kevin this video is amazing. Like 100% amazing. I feel like I'm there, when I couldn't be. Really awesome job man.
I seen the New York Central, when I saw it I was like holly crap!!!!!
Favorites gotta be 8101 and 1071, I can’t choose!
That was Beautiful..
great video, NKP and Virginian are my faves
locomotivenya bagus dan sangat rapi terawat..from railfan jakarta indonesian
great video.
My favorite is the central of Georgia
great video!
I just caught the NYC yesterday in Toledo, Ohio!
Great job!! :D
Life goals are complete
6:20 is my idol
Just saw Nickel Plate Road in front of Walkertown auto yard today!!! 10/26/2013
This public relations exercise is likely a small drop in the bucket compared to keeping the 1218 and 611 operational. A little extra spent in the paint shop and everyone has good feelings toward the company. Smart move.
Thank you!
Love the video
My favorite NS heritage unit 1069!
Mine Is 8102, The Pennsylvania Railroad Unit. :)
@@johnoakes4814 nice!
Lehigh valley Comes in close second.
@@johnoakes4814 8105 is my 2nd favorite unit.
Virginian unit in 3rd for me
Nice video!
holy crap really awesome man
Good video!
Cool I love all of them but my number one favorite is PRR NS8102
Tim WhiteRailProductions there's one heritage unit missing where's the Norfolk & Southern heritage unit at
Thanks! If only you could get so lucky...
I’m going to probably see 1067 today! Hehe, I saw you 1071 and 1073.
Wish they had all been SD70ACe locomotives ;-)
Apparently N&S has administered some diversity training.
Nice I,love this video
MAGNIFIC!!!!!!
I miss the sd70ace # 1982, I think that is brought in Mexico greetings from Mexico :)
Dang after watching this video I realize how accurate Lionel's es44acs are!
Pilar Torres r/ihadastroke
o scale is trash
Excellent - - -1st Rate !!!!!!!!!! Now come on BNSF and CSX now it is you turn to show this kind of pride and love for the past , you all have plenty of money to do the same thing ! : )
I agree, but CSX didn't buy a railroad yet, And bnsf formed when BN and Santa Fe railroad merged together, Therfore, Bnsf didn't buy BN And Santa Fe. But still, I agree with you.
+Matthew Starks Yes the Marketing would be great for them and of course great for us railfans ! I hope they get that same young guy that designed for NS he is a railfan !!! Trians mag put a issue out on his work and the engines here the link from Amazon ... www.amazon.com/Norfolk-Southerns-HERITAGE-Magazine-Special/dp/B00A3EWS76/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1462685988&sr=1-1&keywords=trains+magazine+heritage+special+norfolk+southern Enjoy. : )
I agree. BNSF needs to get on board and paint some of their units in Heritage colors. I think that one of these big units would look super in the Chinese Red and silver of the old "Burlington!
Ronnie Farnsworth Warren Buffett is not going to spend the money
Yeah, I wanna know why CSX couldn't have done this with their old C&O, B&O, Chessie, Seaboard units ... they just slapped that blue and yellow and gray paint all over everything. You painted over your history, schmucks!
This locomotives are to pay tribute for those railroads that are long hone
I grew up watching Southern. I live along the Second District of the CNO&TP in Kentucky. I’m kinda biased towards the 8099. I was heartbroken to see her damaged in PA a few weeks back.
The Conrail is my favorite
Many years later, CSX and BNSF are still just like "We got some stickers!"
😂
On another note everyone's top 5? All are stellar but NYC, Conrail, Virginian, Jersey Central and Illinois Terminal do it the most for me
Like Christmas Morning!!!
18:57 MY BABY!
