- From time to time, you might see a locomotive from say, CP, CN or NS that looks like something that your parents/grandparents say they remember seeing on trains when they were growing up. Those engines? They're heritage units! What exactly makes them so special? Tune in to find out! ...I guess, lol.

IF YOU SEE THIS, THE DIRECT SEQUEL TO THIS VIDEO IS OUT NOWW!!!!! myself along with a few other swag Train youtubers ranked the units in this video on a tier list!
Metric?😂 also 🤓you missed csx 4568!
Metro-North 211 was voted best, right?
“It may look old and outdated to some, but those people probably eat popcorn with a spoon.” That’s so accurate I’m scared.
I don't like it, and eat popcorn normally.

If Lionel can convince BNSF to paint a new locomotive in the mythical Black Bonnet scheme and make it a reality, that would be great
“CPKFC” bro I died laughing when I heard that😂😂😂

“CPKFC” Now that’s crazy bro! lol 😂
5:25 To all of those people who like calling it CPKC, 1. Are you okay? 2. You need help. 3. You better give him your liver.
UP’s 6 heritage units are a mix of the railroad’s paint schemes so 1996 for example has a Black Widow Nose and a Daylight side.
Interesting detail I noticed was most of CSX's heritage units are numbered after the year that particular railroad started operation.

it will be a while till i get to see one of these in North America, but i've noticed some railways abroad are taking this practice up too. The Slovak Railways (ZSSK) has around five Class 350 (out of a total twenty) locomotives painted in previous paint schemes that were used from 1974 to 2019. thats just one example, i noticed it in Germany, Poland, Czechia, Austria, Indonesia, Japan, to name a few... i'd deffo like to see it more oftenly as its a piece of history on wheels essentially, its not just nice to see for railfans and nostalgics, but it certainly pays respects to its past.
very good video! i subscribed.
I'd love to see a Gevo in the Santa Fe Warbonnet scheme, same goes for a BN Cascade Green paint scheme along with the BN Executive dark green and cream color paint scheme that they had in the 90's right before the merger with ATSF
Here in Australia, we don't have heratige units like in North America, our heratige units are all original locomotives still in their Australian National schemes (please help GM2, a modified E/F loco, has been in service since 1954)
You forgot about AMTK #66, the original Phase 2 heritage unit that was wrecked in 2016.
210 is a menace to metra
For Norfolk Southern, 1700 SD45-2 also repainted into Erie Lackawanna
IAIS also has 516 painted in Rock island yellow and red with Iowa interstate lettering for 30th anniversary
Both of the CN E9As have been donated to Museums. 102 went to Illinois and 103 went to Green Bay Wi.
Nice to see my BNSF Heritage Units made into a Video, even if it was the one Screenshot I made. There was a "Freight Edition that featured all the Freight Liveries, but I'm having trouble getting the Decals the show up on the Units currently. The one you showed was part of the Passenger Pack. Also I agree with you on the BNSF thing. Why do you think I made those Units for TS Classic LOL
I don't know if you have any pics or video of this unit, but I remember riding on 5313 heading west out of Winnipeg with my Dad, probably in the early 90s. He snuck me on and told me that I might have to hide in the bathroom if the trainmaster (or whatever other term he used) had to come out. I may have mentioned this before, but I'm old and forget when and where I leave these comments.
The house I grew up in backed onto the CN mainline near Bournais, which I think I've seen in your videos. My Dad used to throw stuff off and grab it later. Water bottles, brooms, shovels, gloves...
I always loved seeing the rail grinders doing their thing. The ditches often caught fire too, but I think that even happened from regular trains too. I often wondered how bad a derailment would be that close to our house, especially at the speeds most went by.
Don't forget the Texas Mexican Railway for KCS heritage units. It would be nice to see one. Great video
This was fantastic! 🔥🔥
Sometime in rather December or November or sometime last year, (2023), I saw the CN "The J" heritage unit (#3020) in Auburn Yard, WA.
I love the mopac heritage unit. My first heritage I ever photographed
I railfan NJ Transit and I've seen almost all of the heritage units. I'm only missing the Erie and Erie Lackawanna. I finally saw 4101 at my local train station last week. My top two have to be 4109 and 4101. 4101 is interesting because the livery it wears is the same as it was when NJT first got it, it then got repainted to the grey with the slanted stripes when NJT overhauled back in the 90's. I'm glad it got repainted back to the original livery. It also retains its original high mounted bell, which most got switched to be below the cab. The bell is also an actual bell, not an e-bell that NJT widely uses now. I took a video of it pulling into my local station and you can see the clapper striking the inside of the bell. The horn it has isn't the best though, I wish it had a cooler horn. My favorite NJT engine though is the Atlas locomotive 4503. I preordered the HO scale model last year and it should be coming later this year.
Good video. I didn't know that some of those units existed.
just the intro with the horn and the what the hell sound!, you know it's going to be a good video! LMAO
1:23 I didn’t know Amtrash was painting their P42s in heritage schemes. The problem with P42’s (and most other passenger diesel locomotives) is there is not enough paint on earth to make their hideous designs look good. You can paint a turd all you want, it’ll still look like a turd. Bring back the E units.
Great video!
I'm so use to seeing these, I never thought they were special because of it 😂
Just got a new subscriber dude! Keep it up
Thank you !
Looks like I made it into the video! Just made my day a whole lot better.
Someone literally commented on one of my videos saying "Oh cool! I've never seen a train before!"
LMAO HOWWWW
Fellow foamer making an entertaining video noice, imma keep up with this.
That's a great story!
I have seen the Canadian Pacific heritage unit #7017, truly a beautiful locomotive.
Thanks for watching! As usual, I got some info wrong, probably missed some units, it really do be like that sometimes! I'm sorry, lol.
What is your personal favorite Heritage unit? Comment below!
I don't know why some people say that union pacific is a Overrated railroad when they had the 1st world's biggest steam locomotive in the world's biggest diesel locomotive
NS 1700
mbta's only heritage unit ever, the ex-bn gp9 no. 1921 painted and debuted in the year 1991. it was in boston and maine maroon and gold colors, the heritage unit was named "the pride of charlestown" which was named after where the former boston and maine railroad's freight yard and roundhouse was located in the city of boston. it's now currently owned under hobo railroad ownership in new hampshire, it hasn't moved ever since the hobo railroad owned it.
the up went with the daylight scheme for a reason ya know, that's HERITAGE
Amtrak vets units
I Managed to catch almost all of the CN Heritage Units
Caughted: 8952, 8898, 3023, 3069 and 3115
Not Caught Yet: 3008
but there were some Heritage Units involved in wrecks with them ended up being Repaired however CP 7011 after the CPKC Merger was Scrapped after a Derailement.
Im surprised NJT didn’t go for the oldschool Brunswick green for 4636
Iowa Interstate 516 is to commemorate the company’s 30 years of service. It’s an ES44AC painted in bright rock island red and yellow with Iowa Interstate lettering.
would be nice to see a GM&O and/or ICG HU from CN or CPKC
Very nice, like!!!
13:58 The D&RGW actually didn’t become a part of UP (technically at all) until 1996 with SP.
And that ‘technically’ is that, the D&RGW bought SP, then later bought UP, going with the more known names.
Some heritage units from NS are just randomly in Bayonne’s train yard because why not (Erie Lackawanna SD45-2s)
I caught my first heritage unit 3 months ago! (AMTK 164)
BNSF Had a Heritage Program, but cancelled it in March 💀
They did??
You do realize that some of us have headphones on, right? *ouch*
i dont know why but i wished (for some odd reason) for trains to have "hit tallies" on the sides of the units just below the numbers, just as a show of how many incidents the unit has had since it was built. such as a car for a train v car collision, a deer for...you know, etc. no clue why. i just wanted it
9:38 my picture! Yay
Nice
15:12 that’s at Toledo Ohio Union Station during Train Day in 2014
I believe Iowa Interstate has a 2nd rock island heritage that is just yellow and red
if GTs are heritage then i randomly found 2 of them just chilling in a siding
I still call CPKC orr Kansas City because I live in Kansas where I don't see both of them until like once every year.
Railroader here. You made me laugh 😂
Thanks for stopping by! Haha
1:22 you mean P42 No.160 in the Pepsi Can Phase III paint scheme ? !
Here are the Heritage units of UP I have seen before: UP 1004 Cotton Belt/SSW. UP 6236, and 6378 SP. UP 1982 MP. UP 1983 WP. UP 1979 WE ARE ONE. And that’s it I believe, I hope to see Big Boy 4014 this year tho 😁
Epic
my dad used to work for BNSF and he and a couple others pitched the idea to the ceo or whoever to do heritage units. they got people who were willing to paint it for free and they had the paint schemes and everything. they still turned it down and told them to never bring this up to them again
What awful management huh? Forget history and more importantly employees, all they care about is the shareholders! LOL
@@TheWinnipegRailfan Frfr
I saw 7014 all the way in the southern states this was the pre merger with kcs
Actually, Amtrak still has P42 and P40 DC’S 145 and 822 along with F 40 pH number 406 which are still in the phase 3 to this day
In Uk I saw a 1950s desil train with freight
Hair tag unit video
I actually saw one of them on the capital Limited not long ago
My local railroad in Kentucky has units painted for the UK and Cardinal sports teams and units painted to honor the U.S Veterans. The railroad is Paducah & Louisville you should do a video on them and their special unit locomotives.
Phase 1 hate will not be tolerated
15:28 Also IAIS 516, iirc it’s in the old IAIS scheme
I hope you don't get mad Winnipeg Railfann but Norfolk Southern technically has 21 heritage units. The extra unit is NS 1030. Now even though there is no special paint job it is basically considered the 30th anniversary unit. I've only seen it once but it is still cool and it was supposedly in a picture with its heritage brothers.
I am SO MAD!!! just kidding, yeah I completely forgot about him, kinda skipped it cause it's not really painted in anything special like say, 1073 or something like that lol
1030 was short lived. Only holding numberboards 1982 & 2012. Afterwards it became a regular unit
Showing these to my non railfan friends to convince them that all trains don't look the same
I would say they are ironically correct. Everything is basically a GEVO for freight or Siemens for passenger service. Now the 1930's-1950's, that was the real era of locomotive diversity.
13:38 SneakySteveGod's Moment
editting goes hard ngl
The drgw didn't become a part of up until 1996, as it was merged with the sp. The drgw merged with the sp in 1988
8:49 I question what goes on in that head of yours.
BNSF is the only class one that hasn’t done any heritage units. I really don’t believe that H3 units with stickers are heritage units.
Come on Kathryn Farmer and Warren Buffet, do some heritage units, particularly a fleet of blue and yellow and red and silver Santa Fe units! Better yet, just rename yourself Santa Fe and do heritage units for every other railroad component of your system.
8:54 I fucking hate it when Revolution 9 Suddenly pops up in a video since I have childhood trauma from hearing this song, heck I even had some nights where I couldn’t sleep because of how scary it was.
Must like running Trainz as well eh?? Lol. Few JR things on here I see.
You should have added progressive rail, they paint their new units in the old MN&S scheme
8104 was not repainted, it got a slight redo right after it first rolled out back in 2012 to make it more accurate. 1067 was the first unit repainted in 2023, after a ton of paint had chipped off. 8099 was second after its derailment in late 2021, and 1067 was third. NS has said they have plans to repaint them all eventually which means they will all stay in good condition
Ohh, gotcha, at least NS takes care of them!
You forgot about MMID 2060
Ohh yeah, dang, I like the horn on it too, lol
Yeah, it’s a really nice horn but great video anyway
For me my favorite heritage unit is the N&W 8104 (or 3)
I know it’s a Class 3, but Mass Coastal has 2 FL9s in New Haven livery
Aw man, forgot them too, LOL
Update, I’ve learned they have recently acquired a third one
I love heritage units, especailly if they are leading...😮
9:27- Bruh did you have a stroke? MAC
"Number 9" my favorite Beatles lyric
While the CSX liveries look jarring, I like the number scheme they went with..
I think Norfolk Southern enter Penn Central is emerging
My favorite CSX heritage unit is the B&O
well SP 1996 is in the SP daylight scheme
funny phone fly
how pog
Finally someone that also refuses to call CP “CPKC” like bro 💀 I am not calling it that
11:29 bro moaned lmao 💀💀💀💀
Sorry the NYC RR makes me a little zesty sometimes LOL jk jk
@@TheWinnipegRailfan LOL
i think bnsf does not make HU is cuz there are so many santa fe and bn locos with their old paint on the line
Yup, that's probably their excuse, lol
I saw the CP 7010 heritage unit in june of last year. I wasn't expecting to see even one of CP heritage units at first because I saw it in Kennesaw Georgia on my way to Tennessee on my vacation. It was running on CSX as part of a Norfolk Southern run though. I had stopped at the museum that houses the famous US Civil War locomotive "General", and some railfans outside were clearly waiting on a train as I was starting to leave. A quick inquiry about what was going on was enough for me to stay and wait for it. And I'm glad I did. Here's the video I got of it. ruclips.net/video/MlBBJW6Oqk4/видео.htmlsi=OK2S_sNdT3Eh6Jxk
Maybe BNSF will finally do a heritage fleet next year for their 30th anniversary.
Nah just another batch of sticky labels.
You forgot NS 1700, it’s a SD45-2 painted in an Erie Lackawanna grey scheme
