CnIc 2464 was involved in a three train collision at Valparaiso on 1/6/2012. It was involved with locomotives from Csx and Up, es40dcs 5387 and 5284, ac44cws 517 and 320, 517 was on with 2464 and ac60cw 7063. 517, 2464 and 320 were all scrapped. 5387, 5284, 7063 and the unknown 2nd locomotive on 7063's train were all returned to operation.
Hi, railway museum guy here. The problem is that, while the CN blue devils are neat, they just aren't all that unique. When you get down to it, its just a GE Dash 8. While Dash 8s are getting rarer, theres not a lot that differentiates them from other GE units both physically and mechanically. At least not anything that most of the general public would notice. I work at the Alberta Railway Museum in Edmonton and we recently were able to become the caretakers of BCOL 4618, a C40-8M "Draper Taper" cowl unit. Those are very unique as they are a purely Canadian locomotive, at least in terms of their cab and hood design. And if you want a GE cab design in preservation, RRHMA has BNSF 537 a B40-8W. Unfortunately with preservation, the hard truth is you can't save them all. You just do everything you can to make sure you save the the ones that might be forgotten some day.
I'm glad somebody finally did a video about these, i was just about to resort to making one myself lol. I have always loved the look of these units and their backstory, but yet over the years I've been railfanning my luck hasn't been so good when it came to catching them. Neat vid Quick edit: To confirm, 2466 is indeed still in Homewood yard (as of March 30th, 2024), and its pretty much front and center along with a bunch of other dash 8s that are still somehow existing in the yard. It even still has its horn and numberboards, lol. But I do agree that somebody should preserve it ..unless its being held captive in Homewood yard for all of mf eternity
There’s one former LMS C40-8W still in operation for a class 1 left. Csx 7929 (former LMS 711) is STILL in operation on csx and is both the last locomotive on csx with marker lights, it is also the last former LMS locomotive on csx and all class 1s as a whole. 7929 should be preserved alongside 2466!
@@Track_Tranzit No way! That’s saddening, atleast she is still alive unlike being scrapped but just barely. I quite literally caught her leading a train a few months ago.

not sure exactly when was the last time I saw one of the blue devils, but it would have to be either before, during, or after 2020. Though the the last time I saw the dash-8 cowls in operation was during summer 2021 at the Maymont, SK grains connect terminal. And the last I saw any dash-8 was in 2022, as I seen one of the funeral trains in Edmonton.
2466 is sidelined but still exists! BCOL C40-8M cowl body is still listed on roster and was seen on trains within the last few months The iron range is really where you gotta go, CN has about 20 C40-8 standard cabs that were brought there to replace some of the older EMD stuff so they might stick around a little while there.
The dash 8s along with the remaining EMDs will all be gone likely by the end of this year as new AC44C6Ms are brought in to replace them. Get up there while you can
Hey, I have a bad picture of one of the blue devils sitting in Homewood! It wasn’t even 2166 it still had the IC numbering on the side! Idk if that helps or not but I figured I’d throw it out there
I really do hope the unit is preserved, or atleast one of them. Plenty of the ex CR/LMX Dash 8s ended up on various G&W roads which is cool but none (obviously) are in the blue. I never grew up seeing the CN patches but i remember the NS and CSX ones down in the southeast. Would be awesome to see this thing in a mueseum in the future!
Update on 2466: I think it’s going to be used as a training unit or preserved. It was in storage in Homewood, with a bunch of other dash 8s behind it. The last time I visited Homewood, 2466 was still there but the other dash 8s were gone. They pulled out the whole storage line, switched out 2466, took out the rest of the dash 8s, and then put 2466 back. They’ve got something planned for it.
It is sad that I never got to catch one of these, but I did however see BCOL 4609 on yard and local duty in Prince George, BC in 2023. (Which was also around the time 2466 was stored)
I used to see these all the time around Decatur, IL. Confused the heck out of me the first time. I liked them because at the time it was the closest I would get to seeing something IC on the rails. My theory is they changed everything to CN because they could not figure out how to make IC out of noodles.
