Musically he is nowhere now. Trying to recycle old VH tunes. He had his time. And he was entertaining. His act was based on youth. His voice is gone. His youth is gone... He is still alive and maybe he can do something other thsn music. Of course, he could do the backing tracks like kiss or motley crue. Who knows, he might becable to lease his voice using A I? Good luck Mr. Roth. Thank you for the memories.
Could not agree more. Dave is more serious here than I've ever heard him, without losing (in fact probably adding to) his insane wittiness. He makes a lot of truly insightful comments. I absolutely love this.
DLR, what a person. High IQ, genious with words, probably ADHD, athletic, full of energy, excellent songwriter, superb voice, extraordinary singer... so much in one person. Sometimes "too much", yes and no, it might just take a lot to process for an everyday Joe. But I rate him very high in my book of artists!
Dave with Van Halen was nothing less than lightning captured in a bottle... pure magic that they all lost sight of. I wish has been born a few years earlier, so that i could have seen the magic first hand. To this day, they are still in the top 5 of my favorite bands. R.I.P. King Edward Van Halen.

I saw Van Halen open for Black Sabbath, Thanksgiving night 1978. I had every Sabbath album and was a huge fan, and I had bought VH1 earlier that summer and had listened to it a lot, (I remember exactly where I was when I first heard Eruption, just like a movie, that’s how revolutionary it was). Honestly, I went to the concert for Sabbath, or maybe it was really for both as both were my favorite bands at that moment. But I favored Sabbath. Van Halen came out on fire, (actually opened with On Fire). Roth did a major jump and split off the drum riser and they were off to the races, not letting up one bit during their whole set. Dave was huge. All of them were. Dave, Ed, Al and Micheal demanded attention. I had never seen a band that was so aggressive yet so precise. I saw in Deep Purple in 1974 and they had that same kind of energy. I bet The Who had that energy at one point. Van Halen was shock and awe that night and you could tell everyone felt it. Black Sabbath, on the other hand was as disappointing as the Never Say Die album suggested. They were tired, worn out, lost and beaten. As a kid I had trouble admitting it. But, everything you’ve heard about Van Halen blowing away Sabbath on that tour is true. After the shock and awe of Van Halen, Sabbath came out like they just lost a three round fight with George Foreman. Not only did they seem to not care, but they looked like they were so intimidated by Van Halen that they didn’t want to be there. But yeah, seeing that first Van Halen moment was magic. I imagine seeing Jimi Hendrix or Van Halen are in a special category of life changing performances that happen only once in a generation at most.
Great interview, I think the absence of a camera and knowing this was going to be printed made Roth's approach more grounded than his usual showman act, I would love to hear more DLR interviews like this
I've seen a few interviews with Steve Vai and he has always been very complimentary of Dave and he says that he learned immeasurable amounts of experience from him. He was incredibly genuine in his compliments and he treasures his time in the band.
One thing, among many, that I noticed is that he doesn't curse--hardly at all; just that one time when he was "off the record". The rest of the time he is totally professional and upright.
Dave is his own best PR person. He did an interview about 7 years ago that is awesome. He drops the Diamond Dave persona and is David Lee Roth. He's brutally honest about himself and his career. He talks about Van Halen a little bit and shares the blame for his departure.
Wow, I have to say that I never realized that Diamond Dave such and eloquent and rounded individual, I could listen to him for hours, be good to have a conversation with him anytime, nice one Dave, you are a real superstar! Enjoy your semi retirement! ❤💯🙏
I was 15 when Roth first went solo. Saw him three times in one week. Two in Detroit and one in Toledo. My ears were blown out , but Diamond Dave and Cinderella ?? Take me back !!
This is a great interview! I always enjoyed DLR as an entertainer. Sometimes, in interviews, he was very over-the-top and a bit much to take in all at once. I think you get a glimpse into what Dave is really like here. His answers do not seem rehearsed. He pauses to consider his answer - he actually seems to be thinking before speaking. He doesn't come off as a person that thinks they are above you. I could actually sit at a bar and have a drink with this Dave and have a meaningful conversation.
I didn't think I would actually listen to this interview from 35 years ago! I have heard and read DLR interviews many many times and figured this one would just be more of the same free association, razzle dazzle he is known for. But it was surprisingly deep and reflective. Great questions from the interviewer and interesting responses from Dave. Thanks for posting this!
Dave is a prophet. People construct their own perceptions of him without actually reading between the lines of what he says metaphorically and otherwise. His assessment of Hagar is still true today. And all the other bands he mentioned. I sat in a broadcast studio alone with him one day in 2006. It was only for 10 minutes but this same guy was in that room.
Roth was something else. Some interviews he made no sense and just rambled craziness, but this one was very good. Some actual deep thoughts and calm as I’ve heard him lol.
That was fantastic! It was everything I thought he was, and knew he was from the many many things he's done and said back in the day! Thank-you for the post!❤🎸😎👍
Agree - it’s always fun to hear a toned-down Dave. When he slows down and answers questions thoughtfully, he’s always been the best. Great interview. Thanks for posting.
Dave will always be self aware, always one step ahead and , in his opinion, the smartest guy in the room. Whether we think he is a talentless bufoon or not is irrelevant. He is the ultimate self motivator. That was a great interview tho. Relaxed and almost introverted, he is always at his best when he isn't grandstanding too much. Well done.
I love this interview because here we get Serious Roth as opposed to Monkey Hour Roth. Love Monkey Hour Roth but there are so many layers to this onion and i love to see them all. Bruh is no bell pepper, he's def all onion.
The story of Axl, Dave and Sebastian Bach in the back of a limo, where Dave made some comment to Axl about being a "pretender to his throne" which Axl got in Dave's face and told him off, is priceless. Dave apparently sent Axl a fax the next day apologizing. Not mentioned here of course, but a great interview.
Amazing interview. He's genius level IQ. I might transpose it and distill down to a written "DLR guide to life and business, music or otherwise". 😂 Thanks for posting.
Really great interview! Thanks for sharing! So good to hear Dave in his prime and also sounding down to earth and "normal". Don't get me wrong, I love Dave and his approach but it's so nice to just hear his views and thoughts with the bravado dialled down a touch. A very intelligent and insightful man.
I really like listening to Dave when he’s pretty serious about the conversation between him and the interviewer ! It’s very interesting 👍 space ace ron⚡️⚡️⚡️
@@Plisken65 like Roth once said "People drive around and they're always looking for a place to park. I just wanna drive." For some of us. There is no destination. Its just a ride.
His takes on the artists was pretty interesting but I also, in retrospect and with all the perspective we have now, see it like he was calling it back then. As a young guy in 1988, those takes might have flown right over my head because I was a high school kid and I didn't know much about anything, especially the music business. Now that all of their careers are pretty much over, I can see it for what it all was. Most of it was dumb and loud. It's also sort of cool to hear his measured perspective on the term 'product' but it's not like he was any different, he was playing a character and we all bought it. Assless chaps? C'mon, man, you were doing it, too.
Very interesting insights…the first two Bon Jovi videos from Slippery were definitely influenced in the look and presentation by Panama and to a lesser extent Yankee Rose. I remember seeing em back in the day, late ‘86 and thinking of Panama especially..
Thanks again Alan! You’re doing tremendous work with your videos! So many people over the decades have pigeon-holed DLR as just a flamboyant,arrogant,drunk,coke-fueled,sex-crazed,bad voice frontman for a supreme band!…& yeah he was all those, like Billy Joel sang,”You May Be Right! He may be crazy!” But Roth already told us he was Crazy from the Heat and this interview was thankfully done while he was (maybe) sober..at least from alcohol because he’s highly intelligent and world-traveled.. not just touring the world as a rock star but as a human being! I also truly appreciate Dave’s appreciation for Black and Hispanic culture that he grew up in,not just the music but actually being apart of the culture which I feel helped influence Van Halen’s classic music…Outta Love Again,Ice Cream Man, So This Is Love,Push Comes To Shove,Little Guitars,Drop Dead Legs,Take Your Whiskey Home ,etc. readily come to mind.
Right on! When I was putting this video together I even told my wife WTF am I doing wasting all my time on this shiz. haha so this train may end soon. I don't get why more people don't sub to my channel. 95% of views come from non-subbers. I agree, Roth is bat-shiz nuts, while also brilliant and one of the best frontmen ever. I hate when I read a comment where they think I'm taking a dump on Roth. I f%king love Roth. But they dude has a nuts side to him that he himself would admit too. If I was him in the 80's I know I'd be arrogant coke fueled too. 🤘😅🍻
@@TheTapesArchive Ha Ha Yeah Roth is bat-shit nutz & revels in it! I’m sure you know that their first producer Ted Templeman was 👌”that close” to calling up Sammy to replace Dave when they were recording their debut album!! How ironic is that?!?But Al & Ed just knew that Dave had the “IT” factor that went beyond just being able to sing! Well, I’m thankful for your work and I know it’s a lotta stress & effort especially for Van Halen videos with the copyright and legal shit! I completely understand why you will shut it down eventually..it’s f’***d up that as a fan you’re getting shit while you’re only paying homage to a band that was apart of the soundtrack of your life just like mine and countless others!Rock on Bro!🤟🎸🎸🥁🎤🎶
My all-time favorite entertainer. I modeled my style after DDR as a teenager and went from fat and shy in 1980 to a sexy 6 foot 1, 210 pound warrior by 1982. I was Diamond Dave and Conan the barbarian all in one. I became a chick magnet who would kick your azz if you crossed me. Now, in middle age, I'm a loving father sharing Van Halen's music with my kids and telling them how the band changed my life for the better. Thank you Dave.
@@TheTapesArchive forsure bro just funny hearing the REAL DAVE ROTH come out off the record and say some real shit. And then he almost intimadates the guy u can hear it in daves voice. Say it! Say were off the record. Lol. Its like oh shit. Yes Sir Mr. Roth. Lol
I appreciate the introspective philosopher version of Dave. Interesting listening to the OU812 interviews and this one back to back. Both Dave and Ed were playing roles onstage.
Wow - this merits a few listens. He was insightful, gave space to the interviewer and answered the questions asked. This and Marc Maron's are great bookend DLR interviews with 20+ years between
Through the years Steve Vai has talked about how professional and a stickler for details Dave is. Steve said he enjoyed being in a band with Dave in several different interviews. I think in Van Halen, the brothers had their own idea and Dave had his. Michael was stuck in the middle.
Most fascinating was how he described Dave showing him how to develop confident stage presence - looking back, you can see the change. More important is the fact that Dave took the time to nurture all of that but has never taken any credit for it or mentioned that Steve lacked confidence.
While the interviewer was a bit of a kiss up, this was an amazing interview. Maybe that was the interviewer ensuring he got what he wanted by ego stroking, but regardless….great interview
There's nothing better than "Off The Record" making this one of the best interviews, partly because David Lee Roth is an interesting interview, even if he does repeat a lot over the years, you always get something. But the same with Eddie (great 1982 interview off-the-record) to have a "different kind of truth" in retrospect.. I don't remember the author, but he made it seem like DLR didn't have that much to do with the MTV videos. I lost interest in Van Halen after Dave left. It was soft-assed music with a lot of distortion, solos, and Hagar screams.. Have you done any interviews with members (or ex-members) of Chicago?
This interview, to me, didn't seem like too many of the repeated Roth interview tropes. (Why I really like it.) I have a off the record Eddie interview coming. I don't think I have any Chicago ones.
@@TheTapesArchive Exactly! I noticed everyone's best interviews is on this channel. Everyone being interviewed seems to be serious, and it mostly speaks to the greatness of the interviewers. Great questions, and engaging. So many don't seem to have knowledge on who they're interviewing and it's horrible for anyone. Speaking of Chicago, I have a very uncomfortable interview with Robert Lamm (and one that sounds off-the-record, where he says "You Have To Assassinate Guercio") as well as a few with Terry Kath, Peter Cetera, etc.... Can't wait for the Eddie off the record!
Agreed. Edward is King, but I just couldn't get into Van Hagar. People brag on Hagar, but to me he just screeched , and the songs just didn't do anything for me personally .
@@TheTapesArchive I can't understand why people don't realize Dave is a _master_ of P.R. - When the camera/microphone appears he is _WORKING_ ; that's what the people want and that's what they get, in _spades_ ! EVH was a genius musician but a total personality transplant - donor! Most famous "stars" are terrible at interviews.
This is one of the best Dave interviews I've heard. Thanks for posting it. I get frustrated with people who don't understand what a brilliant mind he has. So many layers.
I actually met David at his farewell party- which I understood decades later - in the mens room of the Novotel Nürnberg-Fürth, after his last show with VH. He kept it completely secret, his friends from the other bands on the Monsters Of Rock - bill eventually asked "Where's Ed?" He replied "Val probably watches over Ed to keep him from having fun..." That was the only hint where I sussed something was sour...
You know it took me until I became an adult to realize that I have a lot in common with David Lee Roth. We are both Jewish, we are both the progeny of doctors, we both saw poverty before wealth wild growing up, both accomplished in martial arts. Although I think Dave is far more interested long term than i have been, but i did make it to black belt in tae kwon do. ...we are both ADHD, as a previous commenter pointed out he clearly is....we were both bussed in school far across town, I went to an all black middle school...and I believe we both share this adventurous streak. The one that makes a successful rock singer say hey it would be okay if I became an EMT for a while because that's what I want to do. He's never been afraid to try new things whether they work or don't work seems to be an afterthought for him identify with that and I like it. That's the type of guy that I want to be around. I honestly do think that we would be friends if we were to meet in a bar at random with me not knowing who he was already. So I guess Fame stole a potential friend from me, and that's how I like to view it. Never mind the fact that he's like, 20 years older than me lol
Great interview. Smart guy. It's interesting because Dave is known for putting on an "act" when he is around people and they always walk away feeling like they never got to know the real Dave. I have heard that from many many people who have done business with him or interacted socially. He is very much an enigma.
acefromspace.....You don't shoot Rocket's out of your LES PAUL Guitar by any chance do you ?.🤔...lol ...I'm sure before 1978 the members of VH may have been attending your gigs....lol
@@acefromspace2727 Poor Ace. He had a lot of bust ups with Mr. Simmons down the years I guess. Kiss were an interesting rock odyssey too actually. I heard it was their manager who originally rejected Van Halen...Before they got signed to Warners. .
It's interesting that DLR wasn't buying the VH bros' sobriety. He knew these guys awfully well. Interesting anecdote below that sort of corroborates what DLR was saying. The day after the announcement of EVH's death a co-worker of mine (who had no interest in anything van halen) came to my office and said, "You'll never believe this." He showed my an old polaroid photo of his grandfather and Eddie Van Halen. Photo was taken something around 1987 or 1988. There they are, co-worker's grandfather with his arm over the shoulders of EVH and they're both holding Miller Lite cans of beer. Evidently, the way the story goes, EVH was passing through Lancaster Texas of all places and stopped off to say hello to a friend. This friend was the grandfather's next door neighbor. So I guess they were hanging out one night and EVH shows up. So grandfather offers him a beer and EVH says, "Don't say anything to anyone but, I just got out of rehab and I'm not supposed to be drinking." To which he and everyone laughed. So it doesn't sound like EVH ever took sobriety seriously. I'm not sure what or who pushed the bros. into rehab but we do know that their father passed away in late 1986 at age 67. And we have a pretty good idea that Alex stayed sober ever since, according to reports. Could be Alex sort of pushed Ed to do it and Ed never really believed in it.
Al got sober after 1984 and remains sober to this day. Eddie did get sober later in life, probably post 2008 after another rehab stint but the damage was already done. Between his cancer and the physical effects of his drinking, Eddie’s health wasn’t very good in his later years but he seemed to find happiness and peace. He was in good spirits during the final tour in 2015.

Loved this interview! Thank you for posting this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I really like listening to Dave when he’s pretty serious about the conversation between him and the interviewer ! It’s very interesting 👍 space ace ron⚡️⚡️⚡️
Thanks Space Ace Ron! To me it's very authentic on both sides.
The Tapes Archive - Incredible interview. Thanks.
Great interview. He’s an interesting guy, very intelligent and talented.
One of the top 5 all time rock frontmen to ever step up to the mike
More drama coming in Ep4&5
What a tremendous interview. Much appreciated.
Dave is truly a genius.
Great content on this channel! I'm a big DLR/VH fan, keep it up and thank you..cheers!
Right on! I have a rare Ed interview coming soon.

@@Plisken65 like Roth once said "People drive around and they're always looking for a place to park. I just wanna drive." For some of us. There is no destination. Its just a ride.
Wow, best Roth interview I’ve ever heard. Thanks for sharing.
This is a great interview. I'm not sure I've really heard him in "non performance" mode before. Really interesting stuff. Thanks.
C'mon, man, you were doing it, too.
that was awesome
Thank you! I saw Poison open for DLR in Austin, TX in 1988!
Very interesting insights…the first two Bon Jovi videos from Slippery were definitely influenced in the look and presentation by Panama and to a lesser extent Yankee Rose. I remember seeing em back in the day, late ‘86 and thinking of Panama especially..
This is outstanding !
Dave's assessment of Bon Jovi is amazing & spot on, wow!

Great interview. I remember these days well, coming off the success of Eat em & Smile and promoting Skyscraper. Thanx for the memories.

Best Part of this INTERVIEW dave says… we’re off the record?? Say it. Say were off the record. And then you leave it in the interview. Priceless.
Haha..It was 35 years ago and he doesn't say anything that he didn't say in public. But I hear ya!
@@TheTapesArchive forsure bro just funny hearing the REAL DAVE ROTH come out off the record and say some real shit. And then he almost intimadates the guy u can hear it in daves voice. Say it! Say were off the record. Lol. Its like oh shit. Yes Sir Mr. Roth. Lol
I think Dave was being legally savvy. Have that guy on tape, which wasn't so easy to edit back then, verbally agreeing this wouldn't be printed.
Thank you for this: incredible insight on the world of the well-rounded artist.
Diamond Dave Enterprises - he was, as always, so far ahead in the game!

That was a fascinating interview to say the least.

What more could a person ask for?
Great interview. I wish he would of talked about the band and the making of Skyscraper.
Dave is legend and is smarter than your average musician.
I agree, but most musicians don't set the bar too high. Especially in metal. I know I'm a functioning idiot. 😅

Excellent. Even tho you need to bring a map and a Sherpa guide on a Dave interview he never fails to entertain.
A Nikon and a frying pan!
@@shaunclifton5281 Same.. 100%
I’ve listened to two DLR interviews now where he compliments the interviewer on their questions at the end - classy cat!

I’ll have some more of that please sir. More DAVE INTERVIEWS kind sir! Lets fucking go.

I think what people can't handle about DLR is that he's the same everywhere. Like he said, it's not a stage personna. He's himself everywhere.
You can tell he's more intelligent than the average American, and the ignorant will call it arrogance
DLR had always been his own man
Far from a dummie
Unique for sure and a smart frontman..He also was the brains behind all those great videos.

His critique of Ozzy was dead on.
So, so good. Dave is a very intelligent man with very interesting insights..even back in '88, lol.
awesome interview

He is a fascinating man
You know it took me until I became an adult to realize that I have a lot in common with David Lee Roth.

@@acefromspace2727 Poor Ace. He had a lot of bust ups with Mr. Simmons down the years I guess. Kiss were an interesting rock odyssey too actually. I heard it was their manager who originally rejected Van Halen...Before they got signed to Warners. .
Dave had a clever response to everything, quickly.
I think it's pretty well known Ed did not stay sober. Cool story! Thanks!
@@crsantin I thought Al was closer to 1986 when he got sober.
@@TheTapesArchive that could be. I do know after the 84 tour he went clean, not sure the exact time
