You can tell from his lyrics. He has a grasp and certain depth of abstract concepts that reflect in his music. Not to compare this with Sammy but that's what Van Halen lost when they lost Dave. They went from world class lyricisism to hokey lyricism. Eddie was not enough to overcome that loss.
That whole short bit about putting together "Picasso", which means fine art, and "Brothers", which means pizza delivery, and how what he does is a combination of that is pretty clever and on-point.
He's very cultured I listened to an interview with him and he talked about his family growing up. Very intelligent parents exposed him to many influences in life.

AMEN! Thank god I skipped school the next day after seeing DLR's concert in 88'. I was only 14 years old (had to lie to security to get in those days!) and was blown away by the Diamond one! Would have been better if it was with Van Halen but at least it was a taste of what the rest of you VH fans experienced! We VH fans down under envy the VH fans in the US, your so lucky!!

Funny that he mentioned Helsinki Finland. I live there and Steve Vai and DLR were rock climbing close to my friends house. Othen thing was that other friend was walking in the city and was looking the other way and BANG walked right into DLRs chest. Story goes that althought it was middle of winter DLR was walking and showing his chest hair. :)
Van Halen without Diamond Dave just sucks. And Diamond Dave without Eddie Van Halen just sucks too. That friction and tension is what helped make that band so explosive. They all need each other to create the magic.
